I took an unintentional two year break from this series, and was slightly foggy on details as I began reading, but soon all the characters and their previous adventures fell back into place and I was away. I really do love these books, which follow Alice and her red pony Secret. In this book they are preparing to compete at the Olympia Horse Show.
Secret is a cheeky and sweet - his personality reminds me of my own pony, who died earlier this year. The similarities made the book enjoyable but a little challenging at times too.
I always like how Olivia Tuffin balances the world of competition while maintaining a strong focus on the well being of both horse and rider, which is prioritised over winning. Her previous series had a character who moved away from that completely, deciding it wasn't for her, which I found refreshing, but I also like the point that you can be competitive, and do well, without losing sight of everything else.
Although I don't have specific reading goals this year, I am working on finishing (or sometimes starting) books that belong in a series I've fallen behind on. That will include the final two books in this series, as well as the first few her new one, "Sunshine Stables".
