About the author

PC was born in the Midwest, and grew up being shuttled back-and-forth between Illinois and Oklahoma, which is where she fell in love with Quarter Horses and mythology (at about the same time). After high school, she joined the United States Air Force and began public speaking and writing. After her tour in the USAF, she taught high school for 15 years before retiring to write full time. I'm sorry but there are far too many books in this series and they aren't that great to have me keep reading it. I got to book 6 and I think I'm done.
Maybe I'll read one more some day in the future but for now I just decided to DNF this series. 3

I’ve read most of this series now, I remember starting in high school, and…they are undoubtedly the worst books I have ever read in my entire life. And I don’t feel bad one bit about saying that, because the authors use this series and their insufferably unlikeable protagonist, Zoey, to spew insults to every group of people known to man. It heavily promotes bullying, big time. Zoey Redbird is made out to be this nice, kind, admirable “chosen one” character you’re supposed to love, but she’s actually one of the meanest, nastiest characters I’ve ever read about. All the fuck she does is trash talk and shit on tons of different people she doesn’t know and who haven’t done anything wrong at all. Do you have bad teeth or bad skin? Zoey hates you. Do you dress a certain way or do your make-up a certain way? Zoey hates you. Do you not like Zoey or her friends? Zoey hates you. Literally every “bad guy” in this series is only bad because they don’t like Zoey. You have to like her, or you’re evil.

These passages from book 1, Marked, really say it all:

“ ‘Wanta hear my theory on how my generation could single-handedly wipe out slugs and loser kids from America?’ I launched into my Don’t Procreate with Losers speech…”

“It was that annoying Elliott kid! Very, very odd that he was here. What could the Dark Daughters and Sons want with him? I looked around the room again. Yep, as I’d suspected, there wasn’t one ugly, dorky-looking kid present. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, except Elliott was attractive. He definitely didn’t belong.”

“ ‘No one liked Elliott, and somehow I think that makes it worse,’ Stevie Rae said. ‘It was weirdly easier with Elizabeth. At least we could feel honestly sorry she was gone.’

‘I know what you mean. I feel upset, but I know that I’m really upset that I saw what can happen to us and now I can’t get it out of my mind, and not upset that the kid’s dead.’”

Zoey…doesn’t care that someone died…because of how he looked.

It’s not just that the “good guys” are annoying, but they’re actually genuinely BAD people. The lack of self-awareness amongst the writers is astounding. If this is what counts as “good” in their eyes, then that is terrifying.

Also, as a Christmas Eve child, the way Zoey acts on her birthday in the third book is heinous. She is so spoiled and whiny about not getting the kinds of presents she wants.



The rest of the characters are no more likeable. A lot of people like Aphrodite, but she’s just as agonizing as Zoey. They’re all bad.

The writing is atrocious. There is no one in real life who speaks the way these characters do. They all sound like typical valley-girl airheaded people. “Like, OMG!1!11!!1” Stop. If you think that’s how young people talk, your age is showing.

There's also some pretty explicit racism against whites and sexism against men in these books. Not exactly the way to get on my good side. Loads of actual slut-shaming as well.

I'd also like to add that the way men are treated in these books is disgusting too. Spoiler for third book an onward: Zoey literally cheats on Erik, and somehow, he's twisted into being the bad guy for not trusting her...and for calling her a slut DESPITE the fact that Zoey walks around calling every other girl in sight 'sluts' day and night. The hypocrisy is blinding. Don't get me started on how when his roommate and friend dies, and he cries about it (like any regular human being), Zoey and Aphrodite laugh and make fun of him...seriously, our characters are disgustingly evil. So Zoey's allowed to cry all the time, but men aren't allowed to grieve over legitimate losses? I can't. I couldn't. I still can't.

Also way, WAY too many pop cultural references. Nothing wrong with having a few every once and a while, but this is...too much. It is clear the authors are trying to sell you certain things, advertise certain things, shove them down your throat, and tell you what you should like (or not). They are forcibly inserted at the most awkward and inappropriate times. It's a big turnoff.

The "good guys" in these books are NOT good at all. They kill anyone who refuses to bow down to them. There are all sorts of double standards of women cheating on men, yet the guys aren't allowed to be mad about it. Zoey and her crew constantly get special treatment from all the teachers and staff, as well as BULLYING anyone who isn't a part of their little clique. It's all just one big disgusting shitfest, and I don't care who that offends. Come at me.

I’m no fan of Twilight, but I believe all of the hate it got should’ve been directed at this series. It’s much more deserving of it.

i read 6 of them and i hated them. zoey is a slut. the rest of them are stupid, mean hypocrites. its full of homophobic, rascist, morally and politically incorrect statements. i tried to get through the series but in the end it was one word (that also describes it pretty well) that made me give up: bullpoopie.

If a better author had written these books, I would love them forever. Of course, due credit for the idea of a vampire academy. I love how she incorporates modern witchcraft beliefs into these books, honestly, those are my favorite parts (the rituals, speaking to Nyx, etc.). She is the one who got me into paganism in the first place, so I thank her for that. I read these books in high school, and I started out loving them. However, once the honeymoon wore off, I realized a few flaws in this series.

1. Character development only occurs in some character. Aphrodite and Stevie Rae have the best character development, and by the end, especially Aphrodite, is a truly changed person. Actually, Kalona has really good development too. The amount of development for other characters is far more minimal. Damien especially seems very static for me. Sure, stuff happens to him, but largely, he doesn't mature through these novels. For the number of books in this series, I would have liked to see more change in each character.

2. If you read any of Cast's other books, you'll notice this more. There are stereotypes that permeate every book she writes. The women are all stereotypically strong women. They all love red wine, are super successful, and everything they do seems to work out all right in the end. This is a negative, because each woman is a cookie cutter of the others. Sure, each has a few quirks, but largely, they are all the same person with different names. The token gay man (which is present in most of her books) is irritatingly feminine, always "gushes" and is extremely dramatic and emotional. This, I feel, does a disservice to gay men in general. These stereotypes show me that either she doesn't know how to write fleshed out, individualized characters, or she uses a few people from her life (maybe even herself, or what she wishes she was like) as the base for her characters. Any of these options are not the qualities of a good writer. And the language! See the next point.

3. I have NEVER in my life, heard teenagers talk the way these people talk. Zoey uses words like bulpoopie, and weird hybrids of exclamatory words (forgive me, its been while since I've read the books). The dialogue, which is a little excessive in general, is elementary and banal. The adult vampires are welcome respite with their more formal language but dialogue with them is small compared to the amount of dialogue with the "nerd herd". There is no sophistication, and everything feels repetitive after 12 books. This is the primary reason that I can't reread these books, is because the dialogue is so irritating that I can't stand it enough to read.

4. Neferet, while being a hateable bad guy, is sort of dramatically bad. She doesn't feel mature. But while this childishness could have been made to be a product of her upbringing, some kind of stunted growth due to childhood abuse, it wasn't. It's just bad writing again. Also, she is the enemy for the entire series, and the end of the series was sort of a cop out, leaving the opportunity for more books. Which she did write/is writing.



All this being said, it's not a bad read if you blow through it fast enough that you can just be swept up in the story and ignore the flaws. It just isn't a very well written series.

I really wanted to hate this series....I am a vampire purist and after being exposed to Twilight I wanted to hate this series...... Unfortunately there is no way I could do so.....I was enthralled and think it is a great spin on vampirism.... I liked the way the history of native America was woven in.. Good reads...Sad it's over..

I read this entire series and loved each and every book. The characters are so real. The story lines were great and I was always surprised at how creative they were.

I hated to end with reading "Loved" but I know there will be another followup book. Totally loved the "Nerd Herd"!

I can't, I can't, I can't. I just can't finish this. I've had enough of misogynistic slurs, blatant racism, two-dimensional characters that are walking stereotypes, embarrassing and juvenile word usage, and, above all, I've had enough of Zoey fucking Redbirdshit! She is easily the most infuriating, despicable, vile, pathetic, selfish, shallow, and idiotic protagonist I've ever had the misfortune to read about... and that is saying something, given the sad state of YA literature. I refuse to subject myself to this anymore. Zoey is perpetually in heat and falls in instant lust with every male that pays her attention and yet she has the fucking audacity to call other girls sluts and to get pissy when one of her boytoys interacts with other women. I got it, she is ze ohmygod most specialest and awesomest person ever and she has the bestest powers and she loves goddamned brown pop and she has boyfriend problems because omfg everyone is sooooo hot and- ENOUGH, DAMN IT! And if that wasn't bad enough, our magnificent heroine is truly and genuinely monstrous. What else would you call a person who murdered two black (the author made sure to mention their race 'cause it was such an incredibly important detail, ya know?) men in cold blood? Or a person who had no qualms about kissing a guy after seeing him attempt to rape someone?
You know what? I did actually enjoy some aspects of the story, like the magic, rituals and the goddess worship but fuck it, none of that is worth enduring reading about Zoey sucking face with everyone and judging everyone and pointing out how GAAAAY the gay guys are and caling other women bitches, hags, sluts and hos and being conflicted about her (either completely boring or absolutely disgusting and creepy) "love" interests.

I started reading House of Night back in 2009, when I was 17. Never thought I'd still be reading this series seven years later. What a journey. I'll forever cherish theses books because they've been with me for so long. On the other hand, though, they enfuriate me sometimes. Why twelve effing books when you could only do seven (the magic number)? I can't remember what happened in most of them, not because I read them a long time ago but because they were fillers. And not bearable ones. One or two times I considered giving up on this series. But I couldn't. Even though the characters annoyed the hell out of me most of the time and the story kept repeating itself over and over again. I finished them, it's done. I'm saying goodbye to Zoey and her circle and Aphrodite, my forever favourite. But I don't think I'm going to miss them all that much. It's quite sad.

Ok, so I read all of these books, and the 4 Novellas, in order. I know a lot of people don’t like them but I totally LOVE and adore these books. I love watching as the characters change and grow. I loved seeing how the world all connected with each other and what different angles they took with certain characters. Zoey seemed like a whiny teenager, but you have to remember that’s exactly what she was, a teenager! She had to endure hardships grown adults would have struggled with. Neferet was evil to the bone, even when she was human she was manipulative. Aphrodite was probably my favorite to read. She had spunk and never shied away from telling it how it was. She cracked me up! Grandma Redbird is the grandma everybody wishes they had. She’s so living and kind. Always ready with open arms and chocolate chip cookies. Always willing to give a shoulder and some words of wisdom, wanted or not. I loved so many of the characters. I think there were only a few I didn’t like, like Dallas. Truly I just loved these.

Absolutely love these books. A friend suggested these to me and gave me the first few to borrow. I read the first being a little sceptical but I was drawn in within the first few pages. This is a fantastic coming of age series that really draws you in and becomes one of those books that you can never put down.

I could easily feel closely connected to these books as I was once a young girl going through school having the same issues as the main character in the book.

Although the books start out about one character, later becomes about an entire group.

Read them all and the overall storyline is good. I get that this series is geared toward teens but sometimes the language used was annoying. I think perhaps the writers were trying to make each book so you could read it without reading the ones before but they failed in that. All they did is take up space in each book 'reminding' or 'explaining' things from previous books. This is a series that would be made better if they just acknowledged you need to read it in order and then cut out the superfluous content in each book. While they added those parts if I had picked it up in the middle of the series I would not have understood what was going on as well as if I had have started from the beginning. There was really no need to keep rehashing previous content. Otherwise, it was rounded off nice and neatly at the end and I felt satisfied that nothing was left hanging.

I have mixed feelings about these books. A few years ago when the first books were published I LOVED it. The characters were amazing, the story was interesting and everything was perfect. But after a while I got bored, the things that mattered most in the first books like friendship was suddenly pushed in the background. They put sometimes more attention on other characters than on the main characters. It was kinda sad since the story was about Zoey but after a while they switched to the pov of other characters. But I guess that was only in the last 3 books. If they had ended the serie earlier it might have gotten 5 stars.

The first time I read this series as a teen/young adult, I absolutely loved them. But then, when I re-read them further into my adult years, I found them very problematic and kinda childish. It's been a while, so I don't remember all of my exact complaints, but I do remember a LOT of slut shaming. I wouldn't say I flat out disliked the books during the re-read, but I definitely had a lot of critiques, and many eye-roll moments. I would've given this series a 5 star rating the first time I read it, but I'm afraid it has to be docked down to a 3 for the re-read.

I actually loved the series up until about the 8th or 9th book. I loved the strong impression the characters made and how well it flowed. However, they just dragged on. They continued it when there really wasn’t a need for them too. I still plan on finishing them at some point and hopefully my opinion will change. I started reading this book series when I was 8 or 9, as the cover caught my attention once, and then I dropped it when I was maybe 12 or 13 since the series ran far too long for even my liking. Now, rereading this at 23, going on 24, I wish my family members cared deeply enough to check what I was reading because wow was this series terrible. I give it two stars, only because the concept of a vampire finishing or boarding school was a very dope idea, as well as the inclusion of the worshipping of Nyx, and I love the fact that the marks the vampires... er should I say, "vampyres" get are reminiscent of tattoos. Other than that? The characters are extremely unlikable and this series REEKS of early 2000s attitudes about race and sexuality; I don't know the authors' family dynamics very well, but I don't know how PC Cast's biracial daughter was okay with the way her white mother wrote not only an Indigenous woman in the series, but a Black woman especially, and you can tell that this series was written by a white woman. Shaunee constantly gets compared to coffee or chocolate, and is ALWAYS mean in the series. There are plenty of Indigenous tribes in Oklahoma but Zoey somehow HAS to be Cherokee. Damien's only character trait is that he's gay cause we all know the early 2000s loved them a gay best friend character. Also Zoey Redbird is the least likable main character I've ever had the displeasure of reading about in a series. No doubt that teenagers are very hypocritical and will change beliefs and morals often, but Zoey spends the entire series calling all women "sluts" and "hos" but somehow ends up with four different men throughout the series. I only reread this series due to nostalgia and wanted to see how it ended.

These books by P.C Cast and Kristen Cast is perfect for ages starting in upper key stage 2 onwards. The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird’s world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire — that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny–with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

I would use this book as a guided reading book as I believe this book has some real life issues that can be presented through PSHCE, which can open up the class to discuss feeling and emotions and how to deal with those issues. As well as being for the slightly older generation getting ready to go off to secondary school this book can focus on the new emotional feelings of moving away from friends and starting a new school

Well, I'm 7 1/2 books into this series, and clearly there is some good storytelling going on. However, while this is an older series, I do find the teen vernacular used, rather often in ways to describe people, is unnecessary. References to special needs kids, kids with growth delay, and LGBTQ kids, often fall on harmful stereotypes that, quite honestly, are a bit jarring to take in. I truly wish the authors took a more thoughtful approach and described personalities, behaviors, and feelings rather than lumping up a description under some kind of disturbing umbrella thought process. That said, I was grateful to reflect on the fact that most teens I run into do not make comments in such a thoughtless way, and I find these textual mishaps opportunities for readers to think about the harm this way of thinking invokes rather than merely accepting the words both Casts throw on the pages.

That said, I do love the feminist tilt here that is very well done and displayed in several different ways successfully. I can look past the failures to see quality vampire world-building that is a little different from what I have read in the past even if it does straddle witch-lore quite closely.

One of my favourite Vampire Book-series of all time, the first book "Marked" enamored me when i was in 6:th grade. The world of House of Night Cast has created is vivid, alive, magical and sexy and i remember finishing the books until "Burned",cuz "Awakened" wasn`t published yet. In 2014 the last book "Redeemed" came out and after reading it i had finally finished these series, and my splendid time with Zoey, Stark, Heath/Aurox, the twins, Kalona, Stevie Rae and the others had come to an end. Either way,this series isn`t for all readers out there as the characters are really flawed and do some selfish (and stupid) things sometimes, yah but that`s life and you do grow up and learn, and thats what Cast shows us throughout this series.

The world of House of Night is mystical and poetic and absolutely draws you in. You become attached with each and every character, marvel at their development, you're at the edge of your seat for every battle they face... I just can't say enough good things. And the protagonist, Zoe, is so real. She follows her morals as best she can, she fights her battles like a true respectable warrior, and even though she doesn't always have the answers often falls into turmoil not knowing how to best proceed... she still fights and doesn't lose sight of what's most important. She is a true leader. I give 4.5 stars (because damn she needs to pick a love interest and stick with 'em, come one! You're tugging at our heart).

Zoey is like most teens in life that are going through changes, but she is having to leave everything she knows to start a new life. The first book she is trying to fit in with a new school and make new friends. The second book Betrayed, moved me a bit when her best friend Stevie Rae isnt able to accept the change and her body rejects it. The third book Chosen, kept my interest even though they all seemed a bit dragged out! The fourth book Untamed, felt like it was to much to keep up with with everything going on. The books are a bit of a struggle for me to get through, but overall they are a nice read. Sometimes a bit slow paced, but a lot happens in each book. Maybe if the authors had left some things out it would still have been a good series, just with less books.

i haven’t read them all. i’m like 5 books in tho. the main character is absolutely insufferable, however she is seemingly evolving throughout the books. a lot of the characters r terrible but it’s not necessarily because of how they’re written it’s just their characters. the books themselves lack substance. they’re sort of like reality tv: absolute dogshit but entertaining. i do think the series could’ve been a lot shorter n i don’t mind long series, i am into slow burn , but this one is repetitive. buuuut i have to see it through to the end. idek just how many books they’re r n i have been reading them sporadically for about 3 years now.

I absolutely LOVE these books. I own them all some sort cover some hard cover and the 4 extra books on the characters and the other two extras. They are well worth the read, no one sparkles. Thank goddess ;) it's one of my favorite series and I've re-read them many times and will continue to do so. I highly recommend. Warning. It's not in serious detail but in the first of second book i believe there's a scene of a girl giving her boyfriend a blow job in the hallway. In case people let their kids read this series. No there is hardly any "dirty" material.

I am now almost 21 years old and have been searching for the name of this series that I read when I was in middle school for years and I finally found it… these books literally started it all for me they’re so good for younger girls and make it so easy to start a love for reading. Cannot believe I finally found the name from so long ago I’m so excited! Based in Tulsa which is where most my family lives so I was specifically partial that they placed the setting in broken arrow, Zoey was a bad A character and these books were so perfect for me as a kid.

Loved this series. P.C. Cast was great at creating a diverse cast that I actually CARED about. A vibrant world that seems it could very much exist in our own with an incredible lore that even tied in native american stories (set in Tulsa, OK). Following a high school aged girl who is "marked" to become a vampire and is sent to a local school to learn how to control her powers and the change into becoming a vampire. However dark magic is hiding amidst the school. It's a great read that I highly recommend.

Really enjoyed this series and recently re read it now i’m older. And as much as the writing style can feel a bit cringeworthy, i do like it. Whether that’s my nostalgia telling me so or not is unclear! The last couple books felt rushed in terms of plot, and i feel like with a better writing style these books could have been condensed to about 6. However i do cherish my experience of this series!
