I really liked this book! With Halloween coming next month, I have started on my "Halloween Reading". I couldn't figure out which series I wanted to read first, so I had my sister mix up the books while I closed my eyes and then I chose blindly. This was the result. I had read book 1 last year around this time, so I figured it was okay to read book 2 even though I didn't really remember reading book 1. However, as I read this one, I began to recall book 1 so everything worked out okay. :)
This book continues the story of Febe (yes it's spelled that way and pronounced Phoebe), Trev (her love interest), her 3 aunts (Trixie, Vanity, and the 3rd one's name escapes me at the moment), her sister, and her familiar a cat named Ebony.
I never lost interest while reading this book and that may be due to the fact that 3 people were killed. One was Febe's ex-fiancee who cheated on her in the past named Jonathon, one was the semi-aunt of Jonathon, and one was a civil servant of the town who was disguised as someone else.
The characters were well-written (for the most part), the town was also well-written and the description allowed me to picture it in my head. The personality of the characters come out little by little (which I like). The plot was superb! Having 3 murders that were very well connected to each other was brilliant! When you add to that the fact that the villain was not uncovered until the very end (and I could not guess who it was) and you have a complete story that makes sense but keeps you guessing until the very end. (Well, it did keep me guessing). :)
There are good ideas here but it reads like an unfinished draft. Although authors need to make sure readers understand context when it is a series, the repetition about Aunt Vanity possibly being hexed to make her behavior match her name, or the cheating fiancé is overdone. Way overdone. It felt as though the repetition of the type of poisons used was also overkill (pun intended). Over and over and over to fill up pages. ‘Sis’ was used too much. ‘I can hear you, you know’ lost its humor from overuse. Too many convenient occurrences also muck the story. Short term memory loss, plan to catch the killer is never constructed or hinted at, the actual killer (and being a shapeshifter) comes out of no where. And the fiancé is much more awful, planning to kill her, but again….there is no build up to that discovery. No discernible clues you can look back on and say, ‘aha, now I see it’ or even let you solve it. A mix of both is best, IMHO. D love the reread this after it is edited and more complete.

Just like the first book, this one felt rushed. I still have no clear image of any of the Summer women. I need more description and more on how we get from A to Z instead of just jumping there. It really reads like a rough draft. For example, the ending came out of no where. There was no build up at all. The murderer came all the way out of left field. I think his name was mentioned twice, in entirely different contexts. Like he was a faceless character, didn't even have a first name. And a shapeshifter? I swear it was the first time shapeshifters were even mentioned in this world. Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that I already have the whole series I would stop with this one.

I did enjoy this book. There were a few places that did not come together. And it felt like there was a big jump from time to time were things seemed to be missing. But over all a really good book.
Read this as part of an omnibus. Plot is good but the execution of it is not. I was hoping it would get better after the first book but I was disappointed. Attempted to read the next book and gave up after a couple of chapters.
I would give this 3.75 stars. This is the second in the Summer Sisters series. It’s a good short read (or in my case, audio). It was enjoyable. Characters are fun!
