Kayla

Seven years ago I left Williamsport, carrying with me the grief of losing my best friend and the shame of the feelings I’d developed for the man she left behind. I spent time running from those feelings and the guilt that tried to suffocate me. But something much worse is forcing me to pick up and relocate again. This time back home. To the city I’ve always loved and missed, and surprisingly back to the man I tried to forget. But it could never be. The stark, anger-filled expression in Joshua’s emerald eyes when he first lays eyes on me, warns of his unforgiveness. At least, that’s what I thought it was, until he invites me to stay in his home. Once there, the friendship that was always between us, changes into something more...something different.

Joshua

I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed her until I saw her for the first time in seven years. She was different. Hell, we both were but the confident, outgoing woman I remembered wasn’t the same Kayla Reyes that come back from the West Coast. No matter how much I wanted to forget about it, to give her the cold shoulder for leaving the way she did, I couldn’t. And when she moves into my home, things get worse. Not only is there trouble brewing at my multi-million dollar real-estate company, but Kay’s got her own secrets. Secrets that sent her scurrying back to the city she left behind. I resolve to get to the bottom of both these issues and get rid of them, root and stem. What I hadn’t banked on was breaking the vow I’d made years earlier; to never lose my heart to a woman again. And this time, it’s deeper than ever before. This time it’s starting to feel as if it were meant to be.

A friend downloaded this story to my kindle without my knowledge. There were no reviews at the time and blurb stated that it was about two childhood friends and their second chance.. Since I just finished another similar trope on a high note, I thought I’d give this a try too. However, by 2nd or 3rd chpt in, I knew it wouldn’t be for me because this is a triangle love story of three friends (one who is dead) and that is not my cup of tea....

Joshua met Chelsea (Chels) at Kindergarten and Kayla (Kay) at 6th grade. Kay is an Afro/Hispanic heroine who comes from a loving middle class family and Chels & Joshua are white from a rich family.

All three became best friends & in their Junior year of college, Chels developed a huge crush on Joshua and they started dating and were madly in love. Kay also had a crush on Joshua but never let it be known because she didn't want to hurt her friend. However, Chels was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer and died a year later leaving two heart broken friends.

After the funeral, Joshua took Kay to Chels's & Joshua's special spot (A waterfall) where they threw her ashes and said goodbye. When he took Kay home, SHE ends up kissing him. Feeling embarrassed that she betrayed her friend by kissing her boyfriend, she leaves town without saying goodbye and doesn't return for 7 years.

Joshua spends 2 years grieving for Chels, his first love and feeling hurt that Kay also abandoned him. He becomes a manho and vows to never again fall in love.

Before he sees Kay, he attends a fundraising party that he sponsors to ovarian cancer research in memory of Chels and has just picked up a woman that he is flirting with & planned to take home to have sex when he sees Kay.

After this, the story is a mixed bag of Joshua & Kay moving in together & giving in to their attraction, trying to find who is sabotaging his business and the mystery of what happened to Kay in the time she was away from him ( ).

What I didn't like about this story is that the title "Meant to Be" was in no way reflected in the couple we were suppose to read about. First of all, Joshua CHOSE Chels! He fell deeply in love with her and was planning to marry her (he had the ring but never got to ask her because she died). If she hadn't died, there would never have been any feelings at all for Kay!

It was never addressed why he chose Chels over Kay. There was a reviewer who stated that Chels was the "safe" one but that was never mentioned in the book. In fact, there was NO mention at all of him having feelings or attraction for Kay in all the years they were friends. So for him to suddenly find himself attracted & in love with Kay, didn't ring true for me and I just didn't see any chemistry at all.

My other pet peeve is that Kay mentions several times in the story that she feels that she is betraying her friend by forming a sexual relationship with Joshua yet that doesn't stop her! (Even Joshua felt a twinge of the same emotion a time or two & when ever he thinks of Chels, his heart hurts because he stated that she was his "first" love).

Never once did Kay express jealousy or any emotion when they talked about Chels & their love. She was clearly second best & I would say even a filler because other then sex, there really wasn't anything to their relationship.

Another pet peeve was that he constantly describes Kay as the girl with brown skin: "Her beautiful & luscious BROWN buttocks", "Her gorgeous brown legs", Her silky brown skin", and on and on... We get it. She is dark. (Her dad was Dominican & her mom Puerto Rican so she had dark brown skin). Okay. To have her constantly described as dark brown this and that EVERY FREAKING TIME made me want to throw my expensive Kindle! (yikes!).

So no, I did not like this story at all. I don't like triangles in the first place and I felt that in the most part, that's what this was because he LOVED Chels & SETTLED for Kay because I think he was just horny & perhaps lonely. There is not much of a romance so don't go in thinking it is....

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead.
DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW, IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK.

My Rating: 3-Stars because ...

There weren't enough tense situations or titillation between the hero/ine before they started kissing. Initially, the elephant in the room isn't addressed before the kissing commenced.

The place where they consummated their attraction -- just NO! ew!

I was bored by the dual fighter and real estate mogul story line of the hero and I wanted him to be one or the other, but not both.

Why change residences if you're only looking at two weeks before you want/need to move out? It made more sense for the heroine to continue living with her parents since all she did was work and return home.

The mystery surrounding the heroes business dragged on and should have concluded earlier or the mystery needed to be more multi-layered. The hero became judge, jury and ultimately executioner of his enemies. What they did warranted jail time, not a sentence.

There was an interesting sub-plot involving a secondary character that I actually found more interesting than the main storyline. I want to know more about her and I want her to have justice. I'd also like to read a story about Emmanuel and Don finding -- The One. They both make a brief, but memorable appearance.

I like this author a lot. Read it, your opinion may differ.

Next Up: The youngest brother, Ty Townsend, he's a professional athlete gets his own story.

I love the Townsend brothers and the books about Aaron and Carter were off the chain hot romance books, but Joshua's story fell a bit short for me. The romance between him and Kayla was just OK for me. I mean, he's intense like his other brothers, but I don't know, I think what threw me off a bit was him being with Chelsea before she died (Kayla's best friend) and then years later, him and Kayla realizing they loved each other since kindergarten. Well, I guess it's a good thing the poor girl died then because that would have been a mess. I guess things happen the way they are supposed to. I also didn't like that other storyline about Josh's real estate company issues. That was boring. I did however think that Kayla's sexual assault storyline was done well, except for how it turns out in the end..hint: Josh is heavily involved in how that shapes up. Otherwise, I absolutely love Tiffany's books. I've read just about all of them and I'm actually looking forward to reading Ty's love story (the baby brother of the Townsend clan) and also reading about Don's love story (fire fighter from the rescue series!) He's a very interesting character. Overall, this isn't a bad book, it's fine, just not even close to as good as Aaron's and Carter's.

Tiffany Patterson delivered a deliciously angsty read in Meant to Be. Joshua was an over the top alpha possessive man who would literally take out anyone who wronged you. He was dead set against taking another chance on love but the pull to Kayla was undeniable. Despite Kayla’s fight, it soon became impossible not to give into her feelings for Joshua. These two unexpectedly found themselves with a second chance. I loved the brother and family camaraderie, the family get togethers kept me smiling and laughing because you could feel the love they all had for each other. The suspense kept me on my toes and riddled with anxiousness over what would happen next. I truly enjoyed Joshua and Kayla’s story and now I just want more of the Townsend family.

“Meant to Be” is the story of Kayla and Joshua.

Got the book as book one was excellent but this was just.. boring. The blurb made it sound like they were exes and he hated her but actually he was dating her best friend, all they had was one kiss and he just missed her as a friend.

Disappointing

loved it

Such a great read, the ultra alpha and the sick high school friend. The turbulent history, the possessiveness and sexual tension.
Loved the well thought out storyline, the emotion and detail.
The ending as perfect.

Chelsea Knew!

Joshua is a total Alpha, he will go to any links to protect Kayla, that includes going behind her back if at all necessary. Aaron gave Joshua the best piece of advice and I am so happy that Joshua follow that advice. I cannot wait for Tyler's book to come out. I am looking forward to Damon, and Brutus story next!

2.25 Stars. The friends to lovers troupe is one of my favorites; while stories involving any type of love triangle is abhorrent and stories I avoid reading. This book had a unconventional triangle... the heroine Kayla Reyes started crushing on the hero, Joshua Townsend, as a 12-year-old which became full blown love during her late teens; but just before graduating college, her best friend Chelsea announced her interest in Joshua and made a play for him. Although the three of them were friends, Kayla had kept her feeling for Joshua to herself because she was insecure because of her poor health and because of her lower socio-economic status compared to that of Joshua and Chelsea-so, she suffered in silence when they started to date. Joshua on the other hand, could have gone either way, meaning he would have dated Kayla if she had offered herself before Chelsea. The worm turns and Chelsea is diagnosed as terminally ill and dies; after releasing Chelsea's ashes, Kayla kisses Joshua and leaves town without a word to him. He is devastated because within days he loses the two women that mean the most to him, outside of family. After being sexually molested and harassed by a police officer and his cronies, Kayla returns home ending a seven year absence from her hometown. I didn't sense any romantic between the Joshua and Chelsea nor Kayla and Joshua, I found Joshua to be tiresome and Kayla to be wearisome. The instance by the author that Kayla is Afro-Hispanic when her mother is Puerto Rican and her father is Dominican is contrary to people of the Dominican Republic. Over 83% of Dominicans are not of African ancestry and may well have auburn hair; but are not dark brown skinned. KUB # 36.

She gave him a reason to live again.

Even after swearing he had no time in his life for love or a relationship, he could not stand being without Kayla Reyes. When she abruptly left him after her best friend and Joshua Townsend 's girlfriend Chelsea Armstrong died. She felt she was disrespecting her friends memory by being in love with Josh, so she ran for seven years, staying away from the man she loved. But how fate has it, she was forced to return home for her safety. and peace of mind. She was suffering from a form of PTSD and had completely changed her mannerisms and way of life. Joshua caught on to it immediately and was on it like a dog with a bone, but his own business problems kept him from solving the mystery that Kay was hiding.

Tiffany wrote a wonderful story as always. It was full of drama suspense and mystery, let alone the hawt erotic love scenes of Josh andK
kay when they finally allowed themselves to totally drop their walls. This story shows how people handle grief differently, especially when one of the grievants is in love with the other. My heart just burst with tears when Chelsea managed to make her presence known on Kay and Josh's special day. Everyone but the couple knew they would end up together. It was so funny how even Kay's parents had an on going bet about how it would go down. Kay showed Josh how to love again. He'd always loved her in more ways than one since he was twelve years old and was mad as hell when she left taking his heart with her. But he was so glad she came back so they could have their HEA, just like Chelsea knew they would.

Ehh

Good effort, but the characters felt underdeveloped and lacking in chemistry. Also, the sabotage of his company plot line as well as how they dealt with the rapist and harassers was just unbelievable. I wanted a more realistic storyline. Overall,I don’t regret reading this, but I won’t reread it in the future.

Another Brother Bites the Dust

I love these brothers. My only complaint would be that they described Kay as 1\2 black , but when describing her parents, neither were described as black. Out of all these characters, there are still a few good stories that can be written

Josh, Kayla and Chelsea were childhood friends growing up. Chelsea and Kayla were besties who planned to go to med school together, but Chelsea gets sick with cancer and passes away, leaving Josh and Kayla to mourn their best friend/girlfriend. Through mourning Chelsea's death, they both have 'kind of' feelings for each other and kiss, but Kayla is so upset about the kiss (not because she didn't like it, but because she thought she was betraying her friendship to Chelsea) by kissing Josh. So, she ghosts him and leaves town for 7 years. Flash forward 7 years later, she returns to her town not the same person she was as when she left. She has gone through some really tragic things in the past seven years, but is now officially a doctor. A few weeks after being back in town, she runs back into Josh, and even though he's hurt and upset she left without saying goodbye or telling him why she left, he isn't going to let her leave again, and goes after her. He persuades her to live with him while she 'looks for an apartment', and the two of them quickly turn up the steam and can't keep their hands off each other. Josh knows there are things that are different about Kayla, and asks her about these changes he notices, but she won't tell him the truth.

I feel like there were some weird things in this book.. and I hate when books have big gaps like this where it's basically a miscommunication that causes such a long period of time when the characters don't talk to each other. The other thing that made me kind of cringe in this book, is where Josh and Kayla first 'officially' hooked up (the place where they spread Chelsea's ashes)... like... okay that's just weird to me. And when Kayla asks him later in the book about using a condom, he basically laughs in her face and says 'I never use protection whenever I have sex with anyone, but I'm clean.' Seriously? What a douche. I was also bored by the dual fighter and real estate mogul storyline and pretty much skimmed over those chapters.. I felt like it was kind of randomly thrown in there for more 'action' throughout the book, but the book could have done without it.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, there were parts I didn't care for, hence the 3 stars. I really did like the ending and the chemistry between Josh and Kayla, they had really nice chemistry and I did like how Josh was there for her throughout the entire book.

I discovered Tiffany Patterson earlier this year when I read her novel, Carter’s Flame. It was the second book in the Rescue Four series about firefighters and the beginning of the Townsend Brothers. Meant to Be follows middle brother, real estate mogul Joshua Townsend.

Joshua and Kayla bonded as friends in 6th grade and were close up until high school graduation. They had a link that tied them together and that was Chelsea Armstrong, Kayla’s best friend, and Joshua’s girlfriend. After Chelsea died shortly after graduation, Kayla left town embarrassed and heartbroken after briefly acting on her long-dormant feelings for Josh.

Seven years later and Kayla is back in Joshua’s life after returning home for her own safety, struggling with finding herself after suffering through a traumatic experience and subsequent harassment.

To most, Joshua seems to be the calm and collected Townsend brother but just like his brothers, there are more layers to him than meets the eye. He has feelings for Kayla and isn’t afraid to act on them despite Kayla’s reservations that he knows are a lie. He is loyal to a fault and willing to do anything to protect his family. When he finds out the reason for the shadows behind Kayla’s eyes, he does everything he can to protect the woman he loves while vowing to never let her leave his sight.

Joshua and Kayla had a level of understanding from years of friendship that added another layer to their chemistry. It was also nice seeing the other parts to Joshua, which I won’t spoil here, that most wouldn’t expect from a buttoned-up real estate mogul.

While Carter is still my favorite Townsend brother, Joshua is a close second. This can be read as a stand-alone but I would suggest reading up on the other brothers as well.

Meant to Be is a multicultural romance that is equal parts unrequited love and friends to lovers. This combination makes for an interesting tale as once again we are able to see the real Townsend men beneath the veneer of wealth and business that they show to the public.

P.S. The secondary characters were solid and I’d love to see stories for Connor, Damon, Brutus, and Mark. I’m pretty sure the youngest brother, Tyler is next though.

As Always The Introverted Girl Is Dominated By The Rich Girl And Even Makes Sure She Confesses Her Crush To Her So Kayla Does Nothing.

But As Always, White Rich People Can Die, You Know, They Have Their Chronic Illness Called Mortality.

Chelsea Got A Healthy, Fed Life.

And They Are Still Talking About Her Death Most Of The Way Through.

NOTHING About How Chelsea Dominated Kayla and NOTHING about her recovery.

Chelsea got love a support. She never had neuroses and she died happy, having gotten all she wanted, everything Kayla wanted.

Patriachial Parable where the sidekick got a story because the Neglectful Narcissist was mortal.

Way to deal with lucking out on a timebomb.

He chose her mate and she will always remember that.

But then, those with courage always "if that was me" the quiet girls and justify the dominants treatment because inevitably toygh shit will happen to rich girl because it happens to everyone.

Gawd, I hoped they would come to terms with treating Chelsea like a person and evaluating her manipulating Kayla into codependency.

But as always, death means perfect.

But sure, ok.

P.S. Thought I would cool down but nah I'm livid this mortal, imagine, MORTAL, woman dared send him a letter from the grave on his wedding day.

Omg.

I have never read anything so narcissistic.

She stole Kayla's childhood crush, called it love then reminded him of his loss on his wedding day.

They will be grieving you for the rest of your life you Egoist.

They will tell you immortality is the best thing. Well immortality is being rememvered.

She was temembered enouvh.

Stop protecting the narcissists because they died when they were rich and healthy for most of their long term lives.

But anecdotal suffering, the anecdotes, doesn't change that Kayla is ling term ill for no reason because Chelsea chose to dominate her, knowing her crush was there.

How Chelsea and her rich buddies behave cause more deaths than anything.

So I am cool with criticising a long term systemic abuser, I don't let the anecdotes blot out rich people pay mo taxes and abuse the poor, like Kayla.

This book isn’t written out of imagination nor creativity; it’s a tried and true formula. From the way the Townsend men grab their women’s wrists and put them above their heads before sex, down to the sent of lavender. It’s the same book over and over and over again. I started with the Townsend legacy and then on to this series. And in the Townsend legacy, we have type 1 diabetes, forced marriage, hardened nipples and anger issues. All of the same tropes that are in this series. That, my friends, is a formula.
The story is no different here. Joshua and Kayla were just new names on an old formula. Again, the concept was good. Second chance romance, perhaps. The death of a friend that led people to fall in love. Only, there was no time to develop those feelings before Chelsea’s death. That’s why the transition at the beginning of the book does not make sense. That's one of the problems. It had only been a month since Chelsea died. The author didn't take time to develop the longing and closeness of Joshua and Kayla after Chelsea’s death.
I struggled with this book. The sentence structure, the persistent grammatical errors and weird word choices were difficult to ignore. The internal dialogue each had with themselves was even weird. I’ve never heard a man refer to another man’s shirt as a top. It’s rare to say the term physician out loud, much less in your own head. We say doctor! Even the description or use of certain words to describe Joshua’s eyes was being overused. There was a point in the book where Kayla is talking about shame, guilt etc. and there was no descriptive language about what the shame or guilt felt like, sounded like, maybe even tasted like. These are necessary to a reader to connect a story. Without those descriptors this book is little more than words jumbled together. The one saving grace in the book were the letters.
The real issue I have with Ms. Patterson’s work is the world being created here. A world filled with stereotypes of black folks. A world where women have no agency. Because every time a woman has something important to say, the men in this world shut her up with a kiss. The author is creating a world where women are raped and abused by their former partners or are riddled with diseases; and are little more than silent possessions of the Townsend men. While surviving abuse and disease is no small fete, I would love to see those women with unapologetic power! These stories give an air of fetishization, not romance and certainly not love. Every woman suffers in these books and if they're going to suffer let them come through with power! Every man doesn't need to be her savior. She's her own savior.

This book was great however like the previous book some silly things as well however I must say that the plot of this book was stronger than the first one. It was kind of a sensitive topic as well and I must say I was impressed.

First things first, Kayla severed ties with Joshua for 7 years because she kissed him once. FREAKING KISSED ONCE ONLY!!!!! And he responded as well but our female lead over here thought Oh My God, I just kissed my best friend whom I had a crush on, and now I need to run away like Cinderella. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? And the irony is that Joshua Townsend, the man who can find everything about a person in a few hours/days through his security team, didn't even bother to find her. NOPE! So what if she was my best friend? so what if I miss her? What if I lose her? No! Don't bother with that security checkup until she is right in front of you and then you start investigating what happened to her. Seriously? The Townsend Men can't take a hint and that's the best conclusion I can come to.

One thing I've noticed about all Tiffany Patterson books is that all of them have 10% real plot or story and the rest of the book are filled with unnecessary stuff that I absolutely don't need to know about. And most importantly, there's a lot of repetition. You'll come across the same line about 10 times. Like, at least try to use some other words except for her auburn hair.

Anyways, this book was tolerable and definitely not as bad as I make it seem but I guess I'm just a little bit extra sensitive. The chemistry between Kayla and Joshua was great and I don't find any definite reason why they had to stay away for 7 years because of a stupid kiss. But I guess the incident wouldn't have happened if not for their separation.

However stupid the plot may be, it was a good read and I had fun.

This is the first book by this author I was able to get through. I'd put my rating more so along the lines of 2.7 stars. While reading this, I had part of my mind on what was occurring on the page and the other on the long list of things I needed to do. This didn't hold my attention. There wasn't enough tension between Kayla and Joshua to make me squirm in anticipation. I can't remember the last fictional couple that had me squeeing about anything. The plot involving the sabotage of Josh's real estate business was interesting for the first handful of chapters, but midway through I was just ready for things to come to ahead. Kayla was all right as a female protagonist but it did irritate me how she would give into Josh, but that's par for the course in this genre. Woman being slaves to their hormones.

I do have a lot of questions to which none were answered in the narrative unfortunately.

Those questions are:

Did Joshua fall in love with Chelsea and Kayla at the same time though he had only been in a relationship with Chels before he and Kayla swapped spit after scattering the former's ashes?

What does Patience do besides go to work with Aaron and have two beefy security guards follow her every move?

Was it necessary to include a fight club subplot into this?

Who told Josh that the punishment for messing with his business/woman equals death?

Why wasn't the prologue reintroduced into the story and made into the climax?

One other thing that bothered me was all the foul language used at the church before Josh and Kayla's wedding. It wouldn't have killed Josh and his younger brother Ty to curb their need to drop f-bombs for an hour or two. I know they're the farthest thing from religious but show a lil respect.

All my gripes aside, this read was okay. I wouldn't mind reading a story about Mark. I liked him.

>.> low key legit I don't remember if I finished this today or yesterday - I'm sure it was in the wee hours ...

but I really liked Kayla and Joshua. I felt the beginning was super O_O
Like ... it kinda fit the tone of the previous book more [I guess?] but this one like... oof.
ALTHOUGH Joshua with his underground fighting ...

definitely Joshua is ... honestly kinda the most charming brother. I thought it'd be Tyler but reading Tyler's book now - I think Joshua is moreso - at least in his book.

Kayla's in the odd position with her friend being Josh's former fiance - who died tragically young...
I KINDA think that wasn't sufficiently addressed, but also 8 years have passed to Kayla and Josh have already mostly healed on their own.
I really loved the chapel scene.

I can see myself re-reading this book for sure. And Aaron's.
I loved Joshua's home too.
And :P to him ~suddenly becoming a morning person.

Loved that Kayla is a doctor and got to live out at least part of her dream.
I liked her parents too - and that her parents didn't just LOVE Joshua - especially her dad - that he low key held a grudge against Joshua ... for good reason.
There was the undercurrent of their attraction.

I DID love that Joshua's mom loved Kayla and always has and is so excited to have her in the home to visit. ALSO the oof ~misunderstanding that Kayla overhears Josh with his brothers - I liked that he clarified that quickly, that he's in touch with his emotions, and admits them to Kayla.
I liked that he was direct, and communicative.

Solid C, maybe C+?

Joshua Townsend is a billionaire real estate mogul that has had his fair share of heartache and anger management issues. His one regret is Kayla Reyes. Kayla Reyes, now a naturopathic doctor, comes back to Williamsport to be closer to her parents and run from her past in Portland.

This is book 2 in The Townsends of Williamsport series. Although you could probably read this as a standalone, I would not recommend it. This novel mentions Aaron and Patience (the couple from book 1), Carter and Michelle, and the youngest Townsend brother Tyler, knowing the backstory of these characters would help if you read book 1. After the supreme alpha-ness of Aaron Townsend and the toe-curling love action between Aaron and Patience in book 1, I was prepared for more of the same. However, book 2 seems to lack heat and connectivity for me. Although Joshua and Kayla have known each other for years, I don’t understand the relationship. Their backstory does not contain any real chemistry or physical attraction, so their relationship in the present reads as bland. They have been separated for seven years, but Joshua is not angry she left because she broke his heart. It also seemed that they did not have a physical attraction to each other in the past. I don’t see how they go together. Joshua presents as always angry, even during loving times, and Kayla just seems to be there. After a bit, I just started skipping pages because the story was too long for me. I felt the additional scenes were not adding anything of substance to the overall story. The story ended with a Cinderella HEA.
