Zombie Apocalypse #1

Bloody Sunrise

Rate this book
Caitlin Meadows thought the worst part of her business trip would be the airport hassles and her overly chatty seatmate.
However, when her plane is shot down, and she finds herself in the middle of a zombie virus outbreak, she realizes she was never prepared for terrors like these.
Lost, alone, and afraid, Caitlin can only focus on one thing-- survival.
That is until she crosses paths with Jack Booker, an ex-Marine with a shadowy past and a penchant for pushing Caitlin's buttons.

While the world falls apart, will they fall together?
Or will their luck run out eventually?

Needing a zombie apocalypse fix I stumbled across this on one of my searches and dived right in, I’m so addicted to this genre, it ticks all my boxes, from the fighting to survive, fighting off zombies to mercenaries, the darkness, the grittiness, and all those worrisome feels hoping neither of them get bit.

This pulled me in straight away, more realistic than others in this genre, a government experiment gone wrong, which resulted in infected people escaping the facility spreading an infection fast, the undead not staying dead which are called zombies, planes and busses getting shot up, civilians in the crossfire, this definitely kept me invested throughout this story.

Now it's a game of survival where you don't just have to worry about the undead killing you but other humans that are ordered to shoot on the spot.

I also loved this authors wicked sense of humor it kept this book fresh and allowed for a stronger connection with the characters, another winner is that even though this lands on a big cliffy all books in this series are released..

Bloody Sunrise was an awesome read for me from beginning to end. Let me begin by saying I'm a sucker for Zombies. I will watch a tv show or a movie I don't even care if it's the cheesiest thing out there I will want to watch it. So when I saw this book and read it's a romance with Zombies I was sold. Caitlin has just boarded a connecting flight in Atlanta when the plane crashes. When she awakes she finds she is the only survivor and can't understand why no help has come. From this point on Caitlin proves she is a survivor. She will find help but will quickly realize that in this new world connections to others is going to be a fragile thing. Along the way she will meet the sexy Booker and he will become her everything. Already downloaded book 2.

I got farther than the sample and about 20ish% before calling it quits. I wasn't really liking the h and her interaction with the H was annoying considering he saved her. I just don't dig the entitlement sassiness she was giving.

“Well forgive me if I’m not chatty Cathy with a white guy holding a gun.” lmao what 🤡 it's the literal zombie apocalypse, everyone around you has died from zombies, he just asked for your name, and you're worried about him having a gun? And why bring his race into it? You should be lucky to have a gun during the apocalypse like tf😅 Wasn't a fan of the heroine before and how weak, useless, and dumb she was, but this just made me like her even less 😅 Other than that, it was hard to connect to the story, especially with it being in 3rd person POV. Couldn't relate to the characters at all.

I love the dystopian/apocalypse genre, so reading this was right up my alley. I’m not usually a fan of zombie stories, but I plugged my nose and gave it a try. This book is more zombie-lite, so that worked for me.

I liked both Caitlin and Jack, they had decent banter and chemistry. This story did end on quite a nail-biter of a cliffhanger, so I was fortunate that KU had the second book available.

I really, truly enjoyed BLOODY SUNRISE and this author’s take on the zombie apocalypse. But I have this fear that since the author is a ghost (meaning I have found found zero social media for her) that she may not be working on the second book. Wouldn’t be the first time I have read a book only to find out that the author didn’t finish. And BLOODY SUNRISE does end in a cliffhanger, but it also says book 2 will be out in 2019. So I will give this one a couple more months before I start panicking and kicking myself for starting an unfinished series. Fingers crossed.

But back to the book. We follow Caitlin after her plane is shot down during the start of the zombie apoc and Jack who stumbles upon her. The unlikely pair team up as they try to survive in this new, dead world. I really loved the chemistry between the two. While it started off a bit rocky for them, it came to a blistering, roaring inferno. Within a couple weeks they knew each other well enough they could work together silently. There was a twist I didn’t care much for involving someone showing up. That made it a little too convenient for my tastes. But all in all it was a fantastic read.

Great story, amazing romance, and some zombies thrown in made this one extraordinary story. Please let this author publish the next book. I am dying to know what happens next. 5 Stars!

Nope.... DFN. Way too many “REALLY” moments. I abandoned this thing about 4 chapters in. I couldn’t take it.

Theres an abandoned car and the mc doesn’t take it after seeing her first zombie. She doesn’t even look in it though it’s at the gas pump. Then she is taken in and when a horde comes the people she is with put her in a basement (outside the house?) alone while they put all the kids upstairs. Then don’t get me started on how this (zombies) “broke out.” She was at an airport with no mention of zombies or quarantine. No mention about possible quarantine then the plane takes off and it got out right before planes were grounded and they shoot it down? So many REALLY?! moments!

Ugh! There are soooooo many better zombie books out there.

Caitlin Meadows is literally 'thrown' into the start of the Zombie Outbreak.
On more than one occasions she's a very lucky Girl in this new World.

Enter ex-Marine Jack Booker into the whole Schlamassel and you got yourself a pair, which bickers like an old married couple.
(But f*cks like old school movie Teenagers when their parents are away.)

After saying goodbye to her childhood friend Dr. Nicole Stevens at the airport Caitlin is on heir own little Odyssey.

Will Caitlin see her man Nathaniel again?
Is Nicole still alive? Is she safe with her hubby Scott?
Can Caitlin actually trust Jack?
Are there enough Pop Tarts left in this cruel world for Cae?

The Book has less than 200 pages and was well written for me to enjoy reading it in between before continuing with another one I am reading atm.

A few bits here and there weren't to my liking BUT this still gets a 4.2 Star Rating from me.

I read this book based on its reviews. I don't think we were reading the same book. This comes off more like a rough outline of a story than an actual finished book. The author skipped the actual fleshing out of the story. Everything was rushed and just cobbled together. There isn't any actual character building or heart put into the story. This read as an idea someone had for a book without the effort to make it into anything actually interesting with any depth whatsoever. Every single part of it is rushed and unbelievable from the characters and the romance (they are soul mates who know each others thoughts in like 3 days). The only thing worse than the romance is the effort put into any plot whatsoever. I love this genre of books, BUT they tend to be really well done or terrible. This unfortunately read as really bad.

I've been having a problem finding books that would keep my attention. Finally, a reader suggested this because I told her I read and loved a similar dystopian world book. I honestly thought my reading mojo was broken, but I gave it a try.
Holy cow, I couldn't put it down. First of all, the plot moved quickly. I didn't have to wade through an overabundance of description, world building but even with sparse details, I found myself imagining what the character was experiencing (I don't know if my love for zombie movies helped my imagination, lol). But what I appreciated was it wasn't gory, however the author was able to communicate the desperate feeling that our protagonists were feeling.

But let me talk about our hero and heroine. I love them! Caitlin is smart and isn't one that needs constant saving and uses her brain (sorry for the zombie-pun) to learn to survive. We meet the hero fairly quickly too, and can I say that Jack Booker is swoony. He's so protective and badass and typically I don't like sweet heroes but in the zombie-infested world, this kind of hero works for me.

And the romance! One would think in this kind of world there wouldn't be one. But the snarky banter between the two and the different dicey situations they were put in not to mention their constant forced proximity led to the hot and sexy scenes. And it didn't feel rushed at all. I loved how the relationship developed.

For a book under 200 pages, a lot of edge of your seat moments happened and it does end on a cliffhanger, but the series is complete. And this is my kind of trilogy. Short books, no filler.

Okay, I don't know how it ends yet. LoL! I hope it ends in an HEA.

“A week and a half of survival in zombie country equated to months of relationship building.”

Caitlin survives a plane crash only to discover that the world is in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Novellas with great character development are some of my favorite reads.

This starts out a little bit rough, just breezes through a lot of plot set up pretty quickly, not a bad thing as it hooked me but the writing seemed kind of basic. However, as soon as we meet the mmc things slow down and start to progress at a normal pace and the writing gets more descriptive.

I really loved this opposites attract story. I loved how well these two communicate! They do not play games or tell half truths. The fmc is straightforward with her feelings and concerns and the mmc listens and acts on her concerns. Even during conflict, when one messes up they talk about it, apologize, and then work to do better! Like what!? I love that we are not having relationship conflicts just to add drama. It’s great communication. Amazing how emotional awareness and maturity goes so far to present strong characters in a story.

Also, I loved how the author portrayed how well they understood each other. She illustrates their ability to communicate with more than words by using italics. A few words spoken but the italics expand on all they say by looks or actions. It was a nice touch and added extra to their connection. But don’t worry they still tease and bicker.

So having this great relationship in the midst of a survival post-apocalyptic story, one of my favorite subgenres, was a joy to read. The steamy scenes were also very hot! I stumbled upon this series and I am excited to continue.

Ends on a cliffhanger but the trilogy is complete.

I took a chance on this book since it was in Kindle Unlimited, and I'm so glad. I've only read one other zombie apocalypse romance, and this one is so much better! It keep me on the edge of my seat, and I really loved the MC's, Jack Booker and Caitlin Meadows. They met early on, and worked well together trying to survive. The relationship did not feel rushed, and I appreciated the witty banter between them. This book ends on a big cliffhanger but, thankfully the other books are available in this trilogy.

Hm hm hm. I am very all over the place with this one.

I think that the zombie aspect of the story was included well, and not over done. It could’ve been easy for the author to make it overly gruesome or to make it seem like the zombies weren’t a part of the story really, but she didn’t! It was a good mix of zombie and human conflict - which I applaud.

The third person POV felt like an odd choice in the beginning, but it ended up being fine in the end. I don’t read a lot of third person, so I think it just caught me off guard but I warmed up to it.

The beginning was very very sloppy to me. The fact that Caitlin was on an airplane that got shot down (survival rate of that is so minuscule) and then didn’t die the first time she encountered a zombie was a fucking miracle. This girl is a real lucky duck. I think that there was enough trauma in the beginning to form her into a harder character (which she needed to be), but that her transformation over three weeks into being some survivalist was very unrealistic. I don’t think I could figure out how to break into a car with a hanger if I was given 3 months, but she was already a pro after less than a month. I think that it’s just very unlikely that she would’ve been able to survive so long on her own before meeting Booker.

Jack Booker. My southern shit stirring king. I adore you (except the fact that you have the same name as my ex 💔). I loved how deep the author went into Jack’s character and how she made him so emotionally complex. I was expecting it at all and was pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed the romance (it’s very adorable and cute to me) but I can’t figure out if the timing works. I tried following along to see if I could guess how many days they’d been together, but I couldn’t. So I’m not sure how I feel about how deep their relationship got so quickly. Caitlin did bring up the fact that spending such long days together and surviving together makes people bond a lot quicker - which I agree with. But just because you have this bond, does that make it love?

I didn’t like that the person from the past showed up so easily. I think it threw a wrench into the plot pacing for me. I also thought the ending was VERY abrupt. I’m all for a cliff hanger, but you have to make it make sense (and this one didn’t really).

I will be going on to the next 🫡

I was scrolling KU for my next spooky title when I chanced upon this and read the synopsis. I read the words "zombie apocalypse romance" and that was that. I was sold.

The romance between the leads was expected but I liked how there was this urgency in their connection. Booker and Caitlin have only known each other for a very short time and most of that time was spent bickering and arguing but they are so incredibly likeable and have chemistry. I just really liked them together and how fiercely loyal and protective they became in such a short period of time. Of course given their situation I don't blame them and probably would be the same.

Overall I really enjoyed the book. I wasn't sure what to expect as I've never read a romance book set in a zombie apocalypse so of course I was super intrigued. I felt the book really set the tone well, the characters had enough characterizations to keep them interesting and grow attached to them and yes there was some violence but mild enough to not be squeamish. The only thing I would have liked to see more of was maybe the scenes be a little more descriptive. Perhaps make them breathe a little more to capture the moment's emotion. Besides that, this was a very solid introduction to the world and what to expect for the rest of the series since this is a trilogy. The ending does end in a cliffhanger but the story is what truly gets you invested for more. I definitely recommend and plan to read the rest of the series.

I'd say this was a medium good book. It was okay enough to finish, and the cliffhanger was great. But nothing about it stood out as something I'd recommend or want to go back to in the future.

So if you're looking for zombie light, slow burn romance without a lot of... emotion(?) then this might scratch your itch? Maybe.

2022 and 2023 = DNFs
(Review written to avoid a third attempt.)

While this may be a zombie book and unlikely from the start, that doesn't justify adding even more improbable events. Doing so can turn an unbelievable story into one that feels completely ridiculous.

❗🇸‌🇵‌🇴‌🇮‌🇱‌🇪‌🇷‌🇸‌🔻 🇧‌🇪‌🇱‌🇴‌🇼‌❗

🙄 The Ludicrous List:

➊ The h hops on a plane, and everyone on board is blissfully unaware of any danger. Twenty minutes after takeoff, the plane is suddenly shot down without warning. They had just left the area where the infection started. I wish the authorities moved this fast in emergencies!

➋ She's the only one that survives the plane crash.

➌ She survives with only the following injuries: broken ribs, a sprained ankle and a concussion.

➍ She is able to walk for miles and even run when necessary. People with broken ribs typically receive opioid pain medication because of the pain. They're advised to rest and take it easy. Not this super woman!

🏃‍♀️ This is her, running from a zombie:
Barreling inside, she slammed the door closed behind her and locked it, both at the handle and the sliding bolt at the top.

➎ After escaping, instead of taking an available truck, she walks nearly three miles.

➏ She eventually finds a group of people hiding in a house—men, women, and children. When zombies attack, she's the only one sent to the basement, the safest spot. Why? The book says they put her there until we figure this all out. What does that even mean? What’s there to figure out? Why can’t the women and children stay with her as well?! 😬

To no surprise, all the men, women and children are killed. The h hears the horrific scene above her, while blood drips down into the basement. She's the only survivor once again!

➐ She's able to carjack a vehicle (the owners are dead so it isn't carjacking) by figuring it out.

Other Stupid Stuff:
🔻 The military is going around killing survivors and blowing up food supplies, to give the few survivors in gated areas a better chance at surviving.

🔻 The zombies are called "Geeks" and "Groaners."

🔻 Crazy Christians spout Bible verses and are obviously getting ready to do the MCs harm.

🇮‌'🇲‌ 🇩‌🇴‌🇳‌🇪‌.

So I don't even know how this got so many four to five star ratings because to be completely honest it's complete trash. I feel like a toddler wrote this like the writing style is terrible, and the main character and her actions are all over the place and none of them are coherent.

For example the speed of which the actions occur from the start of the Apocalypse to the point where she finds a 'group' to hang out with in the first oh I don't know less than three chapters is insane. I don't understand how literally she can meet a group of people who help her and they die in less than three pages and she considers them family or like some deep traumatic experience. Not, that it's not you know upsetting or traumatic, because having people die above you is traumatic but, when I go as far as be like: oh that was my family and I lost them,no.

As for her other actions as a main character I have no idea what's going on she runs away from obvious safety choices like choosing to go on foot instead of taking the car that was parked at the gas station at the very beginning of the book especially one that's full of gas was the stupidest thing I've ever read. And then again when she meets our male and lead interest she chooses to rough it alone because she's trying to be coming off as like cool or hard-headed. And it just makes no sense why a woman, especially a woman alone, would want to wander around in apocalyptic world or even City for that matter by herself. When in reality the repercussions of an apocalypse, let's be honest, women are going to get the shit out of that stick.

Overall this is just terribly written I couldn't attach myself to any of the characters the female lead was dumber than a box of rocks the male lead was also his own sack of work needs to be done and I just don't understand how people enjoyed reading this.

I like a good romance, and I like zombies, but combining the two usually ends with mixed results. Either the romance suffers or the action suffers, and the two things rarely mix in a satisfying way.

So, which genre suffered? Zombies, mostly. Then again, I always want more zombies!

The romance worked fairly well. I liked both Caitlin and Booker, and they had some nice chemistry with each other. I enjoyed their flirting, and the fact that they respected each other. What I really liked is that Booker was not a tiresome alpha male who always knows what's best. I wish more straight romances would do away that concept.

The few zombie scenes were good, I wish there'd been more. Then again, there was a surprising scene where Booker and Caitlin had to stay with a family after running out of supplies, and that section colored in some of Caitlin's backstory in a graphic way without resorting to an infodump. That was really well done.

I should also mention the sex scenes. They were fairly hot, but I think fewer sex scenes would have meant more zombies! LOL Sorry, sorry, I like zombies more than romance, most of the time!

I should also mention the CLIFFHANGER ending. Like, the zombie action was heating up, and one of the characters did something that really surprised me, and... stay tuned for the next book. *sigh*

It wasn't too much of a bother considering that the second book is already out, and it's free with Kindle Unlimited. I've got a pile of other books to get through, but I will definitely be reading the next book to see what happens.

Some of the BEST dialogue I've read between Caitlin and Booker when they meet. It felt genuinely realistic - they snarked at each other because they're like oil & water, but they both recognized the gift that meeting another person was in their circumstances.

I loved how Caitlin and Booker slowly softened towards each other. When they finally released their pent up lust, it was hot.

Is this situation and the following events realistic? Nope. But it sure hooked me and was entertaining. It's got the same survival vibes that Claire Kent has in her post-apocalyptic romances.

I read this during my silent book club meetings. It ends on a cliffhanger. Like literally, in the middle of a scene. There were a lot of very convenient things that happened to push the story along, but you have that sometimes. It's pretty par for the course for this kind of zombie, post-apocalyptic book. An outbreak happen. It spreads rapidly. The government tries to contain it by any means necessary. Civilians are left to fend for themselves. It's not bad, just nothing new. I'm not sure if I'm picking up the next one of not. We'll see. It's a maybe.

This was enjoyable. I liked the world building and getting to see the early days of the outbreak. Some plot points felt unrealistic, so be prepared to suspend belief a little bit but overall it was good. I loved Jack and Cae, and was rooting for them the whole time!

I didn’t love how this one ended. It was very abrupt like an episode of a tv show, but the next one picks up exactly where this one left off.
