The Tree That Grew Through Iron

Rate this book
“Do not let them know. It’s for their own good. Control the chaos. Keep them safe.”

Nicholai Addihein followed this advice from Panagea’s elder division leaders since he took up control of Southeastern ten years ago. But as more chunks of the dying continent continue to break off into the sea, maintaining the public illusion that all is well gets harder to accomplish.

Then, it happened. One mistake. Though committed through actions borne of love, Nicholai executes the ultimate act of betrayal to his title: he stops Southeastern’s time.

In her unnatural state, Panagea crumbles faster. Natural disasters ravage the land, leaving millions dead. For his treason, the division leaders want Nicholai’s head. But the worst is yet to come.

Falling from grace lands Nicholai in the company of the legendary Captain Kazuaki Hidataka and his crew of societal rejects. While each has been spurned by Panagea long ago, after unearthing the foundation of lies on which society was built, they’ll all have a choice to make. But will their actions do more harm than good?

The Tree That Grew Through Iron showcases the intricate balance of mankind’s relationship with his environment, and himself.

A Definite Page Turner

4.5 out of 5 stars

The first thing that is apparent in this book is that Austin has a grasp on character development. A lot of this book was devoted to that and usually I harp on books going into too much detail or being too long because of this but I thought that she did a good job walking that tight rope of being overly descriptive and actually giving great details. The same can be said about setting the scenes. They were described well without being too wordy. Unlike I’m being in this description here.

The story itself was enjoyable – I usually do not read a lot of (what I would call) Epic Fantasy usually because of its length – but it didn’t bother me in this story. I thought that the scenes and overall vibe of the book was well told and every part that I would have shortened would have most likely taken away from the pacing and vibe that Austin was going for.

Another thing that is apparent is that Austin loves a good shock and awe (or other may call it cliffhangers). They happened a lot in this book and every time you think you had something or someone figured out, boom, another change up. It made for a fast read and a definite page turner.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I’m glad that I read it. I usually don’t pick up longer books like this but I’m glad that I did.

I received this Book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This has been one of my most favourite reads, ever. To say I devoured the book would be an understatement. I had to convince myself to slow down and live life outside of the book but it didn't stop me from thinking about it!

I think that hardest part of reading this novel was knowing that the path that we, as a general population, and our political leaders are on the same path that those of the dead world of Panagea's world. A world dominated by men who make the rules and hold the reigns tightly, despite the obvious balance of the world being out and the citizens are dying.

Nicholai
He broke all the rules to save the love of his life. Stopping the Southeastern division's time in order to find a way to save her. He clearly grew up not knowing really how to survive the outside world. But his knowledge of how division's work and the behaviour of the leaders came quite in handy for him. He was quite lucky to find Kazuaki Hidataka and his crew. A group absolutely willing to do what it takes to overthrow the leaders.

What they find is the hope to restore Panagea to its former glory.

This was a phenomenal epic fantasy full of monsters, myths, spells and the battle to restore a dying world. This, for sure, has become a favourite that I will recommend over and over!

Wow! The depth of this book was just absolutely incredible. It has been a long time since I've fallen in love with a steampunk like this. The blend of machine and magic was expertly executed in a world I just absolutely wanted to jump into and save even as it was falling apart. All the little details of Panagea, its legends, its history, and its workings just made it feel so incredibly real. While I normally fly through books, I took my time with this one just so I could really soak it in.

And while the world-building was exquisite, it wasn't even my favorite part! The CHARACTERS. Holy crap. There is a huge cast, and the author pulled it off with friggen aplomb. Each one had their own distinct complexities, voice, thoughts, and back-story. I was never confused, and I felt like I knew all of them! Captain Kazuaki is a 10/10 BAMF, and I was SOoooo pulling for him and Bermuda literally from page one. And yet I really loved sweet Nicholai too, and I'm so curious to see his story progress through the sequels.

Really, this review doesn't do it justice. I picked up this series after I saw some pretty incredible testimonials on twitter, and all I can say is that I was NOT disappointed and I'm glad I got the boxset (even though, I definitely want to say this book is also very satisfying on its own).

Overall, this book is an indie GEM, I am officially a Panagea fan, and if there was ever a movie, I think I might die from excitement. I'm so thrilled there are three more books, and I'm excited to see what happens next!

It's the first time in a long time I'm having a bookish hangover. This is how grimdark should be written! The adventure, the world-building, the characters, and the theme of the story suck you in from the very start. The characters' struggles, weaved into vivid imagery of the grim world of Panagea, feel so real that you forget that you are a resident of Earth. You start to think you live on the sea or in the divisions. I love the group dynamic, in particular the dynamic between Nicholai and Kazuaki. I don't want to spoil anything. But this book is full of examples of "opposites joining so perfectly, just as the land and the sea."

I cannot recommend this book enough, and am excited to read the rest of the series.

This book is the first of a series but it does well as a standalone. It starts with incredibly high stakes for one man and culminates in the highest stakes imaginable, literally the destruction of the world. The story is fast paced and exciting, with lots and lots of action. The characters are all distinctive and memorable. The style is a bit too fussy and overwritten in places but don’t let that deter you. Get past it and you’ll be rewarded with an ultimately satisfying read.

A rogue timefather. An immortal captain. A mythical earthmother. A dying continent. These are just some of the things you'll experience in The Tree That Grew Through Iron, as Nicholai Addihein joins Captain Kazuaki Hidataka and his grew in a quest to save the world, and hopefully, his love.

Austin has created a magnificent fantasy world, and the world-building stands out instantly. It will pull you in, captivate you, and take you on an amazing journey.

Much of the story, if not most, happens on board Captain Hidataka's ship, and I loved it. It's a kind of environment that makes for a lot of fun adventure, and bonding between the story's cast (of which there are many, considering there's a whole crew).

Austin's writing is beautiful and captivating, and most importantly, never boring. I found the pace to be a bit slow a times, this is a long book, and I have a tendency to feel like it's just a little bit drawn out at times.

I had the audiobook version, and as usual, I find it a bit difficult to keep track of names, and some of the things that are going on, especially when it's a story I don't know from before. I didn't for example realize until the end of the book how much time had spanned during the events of the book, even though I'm sure it was mentioned several times.

Also, I didn't feel like the narrator was a good fit for me. I say it that way, because he didn't do anything wrong, he was an excellent reader and did great work with all the characters, but I felt like something was missing. Something didn't quite click with me, and I noticed I sometimes lost interested a little bit. I don't know quite how to describe it, which is why I want to emphasize that it's probably me, not him. Also, perhaps particularly toward the end, there was often a noticeable drop and increase in volume, which made me have to turn it up and down occasionally. Not a big issue however, by all means.

Austin has created a wonderful fantasy universe, with unique settings, adventures and characters. A pleasure to have read, and I'm sure the next installment will be just as captivating. Recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic book. The story showcases a world that although imagined mirrors our own in how truly great it can be and how utterly horrible. Its filled with greed and generosity, cruelty and mercy; fanatisism and selflessness; love and hate; all woven into characters that grip your heart and doesnt let go, characters that are wonderfully human, good , bad and everything in-between. I enjoyed every minute often dreading what would come next ( in a good way).
Appreciation to the narrator for bringing the characters to life with his voice changes and use of speeding up / slowing down the text to create effect.
I cant wait for the next instalment in the Panagea story.

Gritty, Dark, and Supremely Imaginative

This was a pretty fun read. Although it was a bit longer than I usually prefer, the author managed to keep the story interesting throughout, filling the pages with the most imaginative characters I've come across in some time. I particularly liked Kazuaki, with his gruff, all business exterior and loyal heart underneath. Not to mention his motley crew, who had no trouble lightening the mood when needed.

Overall, I'd say this is a great choice for anyone into deep stories and steampunk shenanigans.

Also, the narrator for the audible version as an excellent reading voice. Very enjoyable to listen to.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

OMG look at that cover! That is a thing of beauty! I’ve always found the whole steampunk genre so fascinating. So I immediately jumped at the chance to read this one. And I love, LOVE the idea of an immortal ship captain and his crew of outcasts somehow being the possible saviors of a dying world. Yes, please!

WHAT I LIKED

Action-packed! Hell yeah! This was such an exciting adventure, and I felt so fortunate to be a part of it (that’s how it felt at least haha). Something was always going on. A bomb dropped almost at the end of every chapter. My jaw was practically on the floor numerous times throughout this book. I kept thinking what an incredible movie this could be! I just couldn’t get enough. Amazing!

Family. I absolutely love the loyalty that these people had for each other. No matter what, they had each other’s backs. And they had their captain’s backs. He took each and every one of them in when no one else would. They were each running from something. And they would each take a bullet for Captain Kazuaki Hidataka. They are with him until the end. And I found that so heartwarming. They’re a family.

The characters. I honestly loved each and every one of the crew members. But my FAVORITE was Kazuaki. I was so intrigued by his background. I love that he does anything and everything to protect his crew. He can be cold-hearted and vengeful when needed, but he also has this warm, caring side that slowly comes up to the surface throughout the book. The character development for him and everyone else made this book so enjoyable. I dreaded this book ending. Oh, and I LOVED Granite’s love for his dog. He would literally kill for that dog. The loyalty in this book was just amazing.

The romance. Okay, this book was not FILLED with romance. It was a very minor part of the plot. However, it had just enough to keep me wanting more. Kazuaki and Bermuda had this undeniable connection. My heart raced whenever it was just the two of them. I so desperately wanted to read more and more about them.

The feels. Omg I feel like I’ve been tortured emotionally haha. I was sad, I was livid, I was beyond happy. I felt it all. And it was incredible. Thank you McKenzie Austin for writing a book that could affect me so much!

WHAT DIDN’T WORK FOR ME

Literally nothing. I loved every single second of this book. Yes, it was long, but I never once complained about the length. It could have been another 100 pages, and I would’ve been ecstatic!

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Wow. I loved this book so much. I couldn’t stop reading. You have no idea how excited I got when I remembered that this is just the first book in the series. I was beginning to get so devastated when I got closer to the end. I didn’t want to leave these people and this world behind. Now, there are three more books in the series waiting for me to love on them. So, SO happy!

‘A powerfully written, magical story awash with memorable characters. Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf

REVIEW
I must say, I do enjoy a good fantasy novel, so I settled down with The Tree That Grew Through Iron (excellent title by the way) with high expectations of spells, charms and monsters. It turned out, this was very different to what I expected but, I’m happy to say, in a good way.
For a start, the plot is smarter than in most ‘epic’ fantasy. Not only that, but the message – destroy nature at our peril – is very welcome in a world dominated by men like Trump. Then there’s the pacing. Here, the author excels. There are plenty of twists and turns, and plenty happening to keep any fantasy fan turning the page. Personally, I enjoyed the last third of the story the most. Packed with cliffhangers, it is by far the most intense, ending big and exciting, as any good fantasy should.
There is a vast array of characters in the book – common in this genre - and most of them are interesting and well-developed. The author seems to know her characters very well, even if they were only in it for a chapter or two. You might have to work a little to remember who is who but, trust me, it’s worth it.
All in all, I was totally captivated by this magical story. The author is adept at all aspects of storytelling from developing her characters to a writing style that will keep her readers thoroughly engrossed. Wrapped in a wonderful cover, I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys ‘smart’ fantasy.
I see that it is the start of a set, the second being The Gods Who Harvested Men. I’m very much looking forward to reading that too!

I absolutely loved this book! It is a great story with amazing characters that are engaging and relatable and so much fun to follow! This story is an amazing mix of fantasy with a dystopian feel too.

The storyline is amazing and so easy to follow and so engaging that you literally feel like you are living through the words.

There are elements of the classic mythologies that are so much fun to read about blended with real life events that can happen!

I feel like it sends across the message that we need to take care of the place that we call home and nurture it for the future generations and make it better everyday as much as we can.

Everything from the humans to the animals to the plants and bugs are necessary to keeping things turning the way they should, all things should be treated as blessings and cared for!

Great read with an amazing story and amazing characters! A lot of fun to read and escape into! Cannot wait to dive into the next installment!

What an epic book! The actions of one heartbroken man trying to save his dying daughter triggers events that literally change the course of humanity and time. The Tree That Grew Through Iron is one of my favorite books I've ever read! The author does a spectacular job laying out the world of Panagea and elaborating enough so that the reader truly feels like witnessing the events in the story. I hope that this one becomes a movie or series of movies!

The narration is also amazing. The narrator puts a lot of effort into creating emotion and giving characters their own voice (some sounded similar, but with a story this epic it would be impossible for one man to voice the entire cast and not sound similar).

I received this audiobook from the author/publisher/narrator in exchange for an honest review. Thanks so much, Ms. Austin!!!

I had a real hard time deciding what to rate this - in the end, I settled on 4 stars.

The premise and story captivated me; it was so original and unlike anything I'd ever read before, and I was sucked into it. At first, the characters are apart but through some pretty major misfortunes join up - it's not quite "split" POV (as it's not always consistent, or you're getting a character's POV only once) but the POV does change between characters often. From the "pirates" to Time Fathers to "Mother Earth" - I enjoyed them all.

There were a few minor moments that maybe could've been left out as they seemed to drag but otherwise a well-rounded steampunk(/sci-fi) book.

I cannot wait to read the next one.

As a parent reviewer I feel the need to start out with a morality rating - Just in the first 30 minutes of listening alone there is a pretty descriptive near sex scene, 3 f-bombs along with other bad language, and violence - I would rate it in the "R" range and say it is definitely geared to an adult crowd. It is a beautifully descriptive story that does draw in the reader into a very complex dystopian world of fantasy and mythology. It was a bit out of my comfort realm since I prefer a cleaner read. The narrator did a wonderful job and was an asset to the story with his skill.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A grim look into a dystopian future, the first book in The Panagea Tales sets the stage for an epic tale of conflict, despair, peril and adventure on the seas of Panagea.

Amidst a group of murderers and thieves, readers will experience the rough lives of those living in a steampunk-esque hellscape, ravaged by technology and ruled with an iron fist. The fate of the world is at hand, and the reader is along for the long ride of drama and emotions, morals clashing left and right, and the delicate balance of life in a world of death.

Such an amazing read, and one I can't recommend enough. If you're a fan of dystopias, this is a series you won't want to miss out on.

More than just a fun story with fun characters, The Tree That Grew Through Iron gives a nod toward classic mythologies and blends it into a modern steam technology based world. This makes it a timeless, page turning read that imparts a strong message of what can happen if we neglect our earth and the tragic impact it would leave on the people and creatures that inhabit it.

Wonderful story, needs a competent copy editor

This wonderful, complex adventure would have been a 5-star read, except for consistent editing errors throughout, such as possessive nouns masquerading as plural nouns and an inability to distinguish the differences between lie and lay and less and few.

Wildly engaging book

A story that is out of the ordinary. I found it fascinating and hard to put down, a ecological lesson but more about the rich characters woven through the story. Though a book one it is a complete book in itself.

This story really hooked me. And I was surprised that it did. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but I was expecting some YA fantasy because of this lovely young lady on the cover. However, that’s not what’s going on here (yay!). The story is a little dark and definitely epic. The second half pulls the story into environmental fantasy as our heroes battle to save the very Earth.

The characters really held my attention. Kazuaki Hidataka is the captain of a pirate ship. They chase down rumors and stories of the fantastical. Heard of Pandora’s Box? Yep. Their fault. Though, admittedly, the Earth was already pretty messed up before they accidentally popped that lid. So their part of the story opens with them hunting for the well of Mimir. Kazuaki is tired of being immortal. Granted, he doesn’t want to die today, but he’s tired of not aging and passing on with his friends. The rest of the crew have their reasons for hunting down this magical wish-granting well. But things don’t go as expected at all! Lots of great scenes there and I love that our heroes still have to deal with all their old problems plus these new ones they kind of brought on themselves.

Meanwhile, Nicholai Addihein is having his own troubles. He’s a Time Father and that means he has the power to control the flow of time is his sector (there’s a council of of Time Fathers for Panagea). After being approached to stop time and save a child’s life, things go poorly. Nicholai’s beloved Lilac’s life is put in danger and after freezing time, he flees (as he has brought down the wrath of the other Time Fathers). Nicholai eventually meets up with our pirate heroes and through shared experiences, they come to trust and respect each other.

We don’t even meet the lady on the cover until half way through the story. Umbriel Dasyra is an Earth Mother and the Time Fathers of old banished her to a long lost island. I liked her practical nature when it comes to the circle of life (death doesn’t bother her much). The world of Panagea has fallen into pollution. Very few plants still struggle along as well as animals (Granite’s pet dog is an unusual thing). So when the pirates come across this whole island of live flora and fauna, they are amazed. I did find it odd the ship’s cook (Penn) knew how to cook a deer as I don’t think he had ever seen one before. (Most food stuffs are highly processed, factory made).

All together, they launch on a self-imposed quest to rejuvenate Panagea. And that’s when things get epic. A little steampunky, part magic, part guns and sabers, the story has a great balance!

Bermuda, our hard-hearted quartermaster, was sometimes a fascinating character and sometimes a little silly. The story tells us again and again that she’s bold and confident and strong. But I found her to be emotionally fragile (or in complete denial of her feelings). She does get to do a few action scenes, but mostly she spends her time being emotional or emotionally distant. I would have liked to see more done with her character.

Elowyn, the ship’s medic, definitely pulls her own weight. She’s not just a healer but will also stand firm against enemies. She does have a little chip on her shoulder, having had to prove herself again and again in this patriarchal society. Brack… what can I say about him. He was a good comedic relief. Sometimes I wanted to slap him upside the head and sometimes I was laughing with him.

The tale wraps up well with a hint at the end of what’s to come in Book 2. I definitely enjoyed this tale not just for the characters or the dystopian setting; I love that actions have consequences. Not everyone makes it out alive or unscathed. 4.5/5 stars.

The Narration: Gerard Marquez has a pleasant voice to listen to. He does overuse a little half laugh. Sometimes he used it even when a situation wasn’t meant to be funny or awkward. Towards the end of the book, his pacing got a little off as there were several times it sounded like he was reading the sentence for the first time and wasn’t sure where the story was going. He does do a great job with all the character voices and his female voices sound feminine. I loved that everyone had a unique voice. For the most part, he captured the emotions of the situation (except when that odd half laugh crept in where it didn’t belong). 4/5 stars.
