When Cin lost her father, she thought her world had been torn apart. Little did she know it was just the beginning of her story…
Being the sole heir to the d’Rella family fortune placed a target on Cin’s back that she wasn’t prepared to deal with at the age of ten. Luckily for her, she had a fairy godfather looking out for her best interests who whisked her away from her selfish step-family and helped Cin discover her true destiny as a Thorn within the formidable Circle of the Rose.
Thorns are an elite fighting force trained at an early age to protect Briar Rose and search for a way to awaken her from a seemingly eternal slumber. The city of Briardale has been cut off from the rest of the world for a hundred years by a spell no one seems to be able to break. Only by finding a cure to awaken Rose will the city be released from the magical curse and its citizens allowed to rejoin the world of Faloria.
A chance encounter brings Cin into contact with the dashing black sheep of the Prince empire, Coltan Prince. For years, his family has been thwarting the Circle of the Rose at every turn in order to keep Briardale isolated and completely at their mercy. Although Cin knows Coltan is the enemy, she feels inexplicably charmed by him for some reason. When Coltan goes to the Circle with information about the whereabouts of the fabled Water of Life, Cin worries that he’s just using them for his own nefarious purposes. Everyone knows you can’t trust a Prince, but a chance to find the magical elixir is too good of an opportunity to pass up. With her trusty daggers by her side, Cin offers to help Coltan on his quest. Not only does she hope to find a possible cure for Rose but Cin also yearns to discover why she feels so drawn to a man she’s supposed to hate.
Once upon a time, a little girl was born on a cold winter morning in the heart of Seoul, Korea. She was brought to America by her parents and raised in the Deep South where the words ma'am and y'all became an integrated part of her lexicon. She wrote her first novel at the age of eight and continued writing on and off during her teenage years. In college she studied biology and chemistry and finally combined the two by earning a master's degree in biochemistry. After that she moved to Yankee land where she lived for four years working in a laboratory at Cornell University. Homesickness and snow aversion forced her back South where she lives in the land which spawned Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey, John Grisham and B.B. King. After finding her Prince Charming, she gave birth to a wondrous gift named Caylin and they all lived happily ever after.
The second book to the Harvester of Light trilogy will be available for purchase no later than December 2012.
This is an interesting take on old fairy tales twisted with a bit of modern and a bit of a hodgepodge of myths. The one major issue I had is that I really don't see how it's possible for the people in this very small city world to feed themselves, I would like to see the author address that. This is one of those books that the romance isn't much of a romance really, so if you are really into the romance part you might not like it. I think I'll probably read the next book to see where this goes.
Before I begin, this is my review of the entire series, not just Cin d'Rella and the Water of Life.
That being said, I read the books in the series back to back. Thank goodness the series is complete, so that is a definite positive! I found SJ West's take on some of our beloved fairy tales to be fanciful and unique. I was quickly drawn into the story and as mentioned before gobbled up the series rather quickly.
Likes and dislikes: I really liked the unique story line, yes this series utilizes some very familiar characters from very well known fairy tales but the author has taken her own liberties and quickly put her spin on these old tales and made this her own. I loved the dynamic between Cin and her crew/family, and what a motley crew they are. Cin has a wonderful support group that helps her navigate the pitfalls of what she has been tasked to do. No spoilers here. There is a little romance, but for me, this was all about the fantasy story that was being told. Cin's love interest for me was on the meh side. He really did not do it for me, but again, I continued to be intrigued by the story so that was a non-issue for me. Some things I saw coming and some things I did not.
Overall, the series is a solid 4 stars from me. I would have liked a stronger male lead but right from the start this series was all about girl empowerment. The Circle of the Rose Chronicles is a series that girls all ages can read and enjoy. There is some kissing and that is really about it in the romance department, and for the life of me, I don't recall any swear words at all. Happy reading.
This is a reimagination of the Cinderella story with additional fairly tales characters from the fairy tale world and I think this is book 1. The beginning of the story is the same with Cinderella at 8 years and her father dies and he marries the wicked stepmother and her 2 evil children (Lexis and Darcy) and is made to work in her own home. She lives in the city of Briardale which is cursed and there are roses and thorns. Cinderella gets rescued by Maximus Kane (one of her fathers friends) to attend the Thorn Academy and she encounters her squad who are from the fairy tales Red Riding Hood (Isabel Hood) and Gretel (from Hansel and Gretel). Each have their own talent. Cinderella is fighter with daggers, Isabel kills warewolves and Gretel is a mage and works with fire. Cinderella has to prove herself through the entire novel with different sorts of challenges. Across the river are Princes and they are rivals (Rose). Briar Rose is asleep and is the cause of the curse. Briardale is cut off from the modern world and the princes are the enemy. There is a glass slipper which is Cinderella's mother. Cinderella's mother died having her. This is an interesting reimagation of the story as dark fantasy. The adventure that Cinderella is posed with is to go to Ravenheart island and get the water of life. The water of life is the blood of a mermaid and can only be used once. This is a really good story and I hope the rest of the series is this good. This is a free kindle book and I waited since 2020 to read this book. This is my second series from this author.

I’ve been a fan of SJ West since 2013 when I was recommended her Watchers Trilogy on Amazon and have re-read all the books from the Watchers Universe multiples times since then. I’ve been trying to work out what to read next so I’ve been going through my Kindle Library and came across this series which I haven’t gotten around to reading yet. I thought it was a good start to the Circle of the Rose Chronicles. I enjoyed meeting Cin and loved seeing her grow, throughout the book while training to become a bada*se Thorn. I liked meeting her squad members, her best friends/found family Scarlet, Gretel & Isabel. I would’ve loved a bit more interaction between Cin and Coltan Prince but it was easy to tell that they have some type of mystical connection, even from their first meeting when they were 10 and 13 years old. I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship grows during book two. I’m also looking forward to seeing what problems Cin and her friends have to deal with next. Hopefully we find out who actually betrayed Cin and tried to kill her, and for what reason. I wonder if it is actually the person who was found guilty of it or not. I’d recommend this book, series and author to everyone.
A nice re-imagining of Cinderella. I liked the story concept and the characters. One of the things I liked was the mixing in of characters from other Grimm fairy tales. I do think the writing could have been better and it seemed to improve as the book went on. I was disappointed that Cin and her squad were instantly the best squad ever to attend the academy. Things came to easy to them from what it seemed. The story skipped their entire time of training which was also disappointing because I was hoping for some of the drama and trials and tribulations that come from competing for a spot against other students you don't particularly get along with. Authors need to learn that saying a characters is the best ever at something without showing why that can be claimed is bad. Readers don't like it. I liked Cin a little less because of this. She never did prove herself in the story at all.
I enjoyed the story and the things left unexplained enough to read the rest of the series to find out more. I hope Cin's character development improves along the way.
Truthfully I wasn't sure I even wanted to read this book. I'm not big on the fairytale thing but being as I love SJ West I had to at least give it a try and oh how happy I am that I did. The characters are easily recognizable but not at all like your average Disney princess. Our heroines are totally bad arse, kicking butt and taking names. In a world plagued by a curse, cut off from the outside world, steeped in magic the thorns may be the only hope for an overpopulated city oblivious to the true realities in which they live. Whose the real bad guys and will our Prince who is "the enemy" turn out to be the Prince charming of fairytales or the big bad wolf in disguise? I can't wait to see how far down the rabbit hole Cin and her team of fairytale icons take us. 5 stars for a truly original twist on our favorite Disney characters.
Riveting, page turning This is riveting, “gotta keep turning those pages” type of book and I was hooked from the first page. This twist on the lovely fairy tale of Cinderella was fantastic. Not only does this book contain Cinderella’s tale but also features some of the other well-known fairy tale characters. Meet Cin D’Rella who is taken to an academy to be taught how to become a “Thorn”. As a “Thorn” she has to the duty to protect her city and the lovely “Briar Rose”. This storyline is full of twist and turns and has you on your toes right to the very last page! You are just not sure what will occur next. Excellent book to read. Be warned though, for once you start reading you will not be able to put the book down.
This is the first book in Circle of the Rose Chronicles and I loved it! SJ West gives the readers a new take on the story of Cinderella bringing together a dynamic story and a new group of characters. Cin’s life is turned upside at the age of 10 when her father dies and leaves her with her stepmother. The godfather she’s never met, Maximus, recues her and takes her to Thorn Hill Academy where she will train to be a Thorn. Her new friends are her Thorn team Isabel, Gretal, & Scarlet, Prince Coltan, a Fae fairy Anwen. This book is well written, fast paced, full of action and entertaining. I highly recommend it and I can’t wait to see what’s in-store for the Cin and gang in book two Cin D’rella and the Golden Apple!
Such a fun story. I love the premise and especially this world. And stuff keeps building. I love how the fairy tale elements have been changed and the twists they bring. I even love the characters. I’m most interested in learning about Coltan. And I think the Commander is evil. I think that will be unveiled in the end of the series. Love Gretel. Lots of magic, and it’s cool how they used magic to make the modern work work after they were shut off from it.
I did find a lot of parts dragged, and I found the narrative repetitive at times. But skimming over the boring parts and getting to the action worked just fine.
I love how this story ended! Made me want to dive right in to the next novel.
One of the best retelling of a fairytale I have ever read! This book is full of mystery, adventure and a little love Cin had become a student at Thorn Academy and must pass some very critical and very hard tests to become a full fledged Thorn. The relationships that she forms over her time there are crucial to her graduating even tho she is unaware how instrumental these will become. This is truly going to be the most amazing series as all the secrets unfold and questions are answered. I really think the traitor is going to be.....I'm not saying but I do not think its Everly. Patiently waiting to watch Cin and Coltens relation ship bud.

Who doesn't love a fairytale? And, a fairytale with a twist - well that's something no one can resist.
S.J. West's way of re-creating and intertwining characters from different fairytales we've all grown up reading is exquisite. Especially, when she adds her own way of capturing the reader's attention with sordid details of their past, exciting new adventures and, of course, a potential forbidden love. Who, in their right mind, can miss reading a book like this? I know I can't.
I highly recommend the first book in the Circle of the Rose Chronicles. I loved every second of it and I know you will, too. Trust me on this!
Cin d'Rella and the Water of Life is book 1 of the Circle of the Rose Chronicles, written by S.J. West.
This an intriguing retelling of a classic. The world she has created along with the characters were well developed and original. The storyline was captivating and exciting and held my attention to the very end. The book was fantastic. I love the spin she put on this fairytale and made this entirely her own. It had the perfect mix of action, mystery, with love woven in. I can’t wait to we where this journey takes us
Such an amazing and fun twist to the Cinderella story (and others)! SJ West fairy tale twist captures you from the very beginning. While the ending leaves you begging for more. I really enjoyed the development of the characters and the way that the author entwines so many fairytale characters that you really start to wonder, who really evil, who is the betrayer and who exactly is . . ., wait, I don't want to spoil it for you! I gave this 5 stars because I was so enchanted (see what I did there) by the story and I immediately want to read the next book!
* I have received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
This novel is so unique. I loved reading about Cin d'Rella. The heroine is so independent and super strong. I loved her strength and resilence. She is much better than the original Cinderella from the Disney movie. The hero was also great. I liked how he is a nice person. Not rude and a stereotypical hero. In addition, the fact that this novel is urban fantasy makes it so unique. I liked how the focus was not much on romance, but rather action. There was great action and fighting scenes, and awesome unique magic.
It was an ok-book. Enough for me to want to finish it, which is a lot nowadays. It's just something light to spend your time on. The characters were ok, but some parts of the plot seemed forced, and some others underdeveloped. Sometimes I wished the author had spent more time on an idea or part of the plot which was only covered slightly. However, overall it was a pretty consistent read. I will not read it again (which is my scale to know how much I liked it), but I will continue with the second installment. Let's see how that goes!
I loved this twist on a classic fairy tale. You will get sucked in immediately. It was so well written! SJ West blends a variety of classic fairy tale characters into this one book. You get to meet many different characters but their stories are all intertwined. And the way they are all intertwined makes perfect sense! I have never read a fairy tale spin quite like this and I am in love already. I cannot wait until the next book comes out!
Ms. West does an impeccable job on this book (as always). She goes in a different direction with this book. Which I LOVE!!! The reader knows they are reading a ‘retelling’ of sort of some classic fairy tales. But it doesn’t take long to realize that Ms. West doesn’t exactly stick to the original story but puts a different spin on things that make this a great read. There is always something to discover that encourages the reader to not put this book down.
I am a sucker for anything that S J West writes. This book is the first in her fairytale based series and I am in love! This story introduces us to Cin D'rella and the world she lives in. This book is a mixture of adventure, fairytale and a wee bit of romance. Of course there is a handsome boy with the last name Prince! I loved the mythology this book started and I can not wait to see where West takes it.
S.J. West never disappoints, and this new series is no exception! I couldn’t stop reading it the moment I started, but I was also sad when I finished it.
I love the new take on the classic fairytale, Cinderella, and I think this new take is nothing less than amazing!
It has so much adventure and excitement, as well and romance. I love the storyline and characters that S.J. West created for this series.
Definitely a must read and I can’t wait to read more!
Started this book last night and I totally did not want to put it down! You follow Cinn through the book as she grows and discovers her purpose in life after her father passes away. Lots of adventure, twists, and a great ending. The story moved at the perfect pace and is very well written. I absolutely loved the references to some of the other princesses out there. Can't wait to start book 2!
Fairy Tales are one of my favorite types of story to read. They have been redone, retold and reimagined. Cin d'Rella and the Water of Life reimagined and puts a refreshing twist on story of Cinderella. I have a feeling that multiple tales will get pulled into this series and I look forward to the imaginative new takes S.J. West will take on them.
I was skeptical at first when I heard SJ West's new series was fairy tale based. Well let me tell you the book was so well written, flowed so well and the hints of fairy tale magic mixed with a new kick ass story is amazing... All of the characters are so well written and from the first page of the book I was hooked!
Loyalty, humor, mystery, love, friendship, betrayal, loss and even some gore.....Cin d'Rella and The Water of Life has it all!
S.J. West does not disappoint with her twist of our favorite fairytales. This is book 1 so be careful, if you're not already obsessed with S.J. West (read her watcher books) you will be!
I have always loved fairy tales!! ❤️❤️ So I was so excited about this book I was counting the days so when I got it I couldn't put it down S.J. West wrote this so beautifully a big twist that left me on the edge of my seat! This book has a mixture of fairy tales that I totally love I can't wait for the next book to come so I can see 👀 where this adventure takes us! ❤️
Loved Cin she is a nice change from the regular Cinderella character. And then all the other fairytale characters to. The adventure and the love story is slow brewed. And the way it is taking place modern day. Is so cool. Any one who would like a different telling of the Cinderella story should give this a try.
If you love fairytales, you’ll love this 1. A refreshing read from an old tale. Loved the spin on the characters and how they’re brought together. She’s not a princess and her Prince is from the wrong side of the bridge. Her 3 best friends in the mix, makes this a book a favorite one you’ll love to re-read.
I found this book to be a fascinating twist to Cinderella. This book will keep you reading to see what happens. It will also keep you guessing on what is coming up next. I will tell you I was surprised. The character's are well developed and the story will drawl you in. Trust me when I say you will want to read this story
I really like this book and seeing when and where the author incorporated different fairytales. The only odd thing was the first part of the book when in Cin is supposed to be 10 but clearly does not act like a child. 17 year old Cin and 10 year old Cin are like the same person. Which means, there is a lack of character development.
Oh my goodness I loved this book! I was worried since it revolves around the premise of fairy tale characters it might be a little cheesy! But it is WONDERFUL!!! I love the intertwining and history of all the characters. Cin a a natural leader and bad ass. This book keeps you interested the whole way through!
