Allen Carr was a British author and the founder of the global Allen Carr’s Easyway method, renowned for helping millions overcome smoking and other addictions. Born in Putney, London in 1934, Carr began smoking at 18 during National Service and struggled with the habit for over three decades. A qualified accountant, he finally quit in 1983 following a revelatory visit to a hypnotherapist. The experience didn’t directly cause him to quit, but it led to two key insights: that smoking was simply a form of nicotine addiction, and that withdrawal symptoms were minor and psychological in nature. These revelations inspired Carr to develop a revolutionary approach to quitting, one that did not rely on willpower, scare tactics, or substitution therapies.
Carr’s philosophy centered on removing the smoker’s fear of giving up. He argued that smoking merely relieves withdrawal symptoms from the previous cigarette, and that the supposed satisfaction gained is merely a return to the non-smoker’s normal state. Through live seminars, books, and multimedia resources, the Easyway method encourages smokers to continue smoking while they reframe their beliefs, ultimately extinguishing their final cigarette with clarity and confidence.
In 1985, Carr published The Easy Way to Stop Smoking, which became a bestseller and was translated into more than 45 languages. The success of his London clinic led to the establishment of over 100 Easyway centers in 35 countries, offering seminars to treat smoking, alcohol dependency, sugar addiction, and even fear of flying. His method’s credibility was bolstered by independent clinical trials, including studies in Ireland and the UK which found it as effective—if not more so—than standard cessation methods. This led to its adoption by NHS-approved services in England.
A key element of the Easyway clinics is that all facilitators are former addicts who successfully quit using the method themselves. They must complete extensive training and become licensed members of the Association of Allen Carr Therapists International.
Throughout his career, Carr also co-authored a wide range of Easyway books addressing various addictions and behavioral issues, often collaborating with Robin Hayley and John C. Dicey, the current Chairman and Global CEO of Allen Carr’s Easyway. Dicey, whom Carr mentored, continues to lead the organization’s development and public outreach.
Carr died of lung cancer in 2006 at age 72, though he had not smoked for 23 years. He attributed his illness to second-hand smoke exposure during seminars. Before his death, he remained committed to his mission, challenging governmental ties to nicotine replacement industries and advocating for wider access to his method.
Carr’s legacy continues through his clinics, books, and online programs, which have reached over 50 million people worldwide. His message remains consistent: quitting is not a sacrifice—it’s liberation.

I'd like to be able to say that I was able to quit smoking--and stay quit--after reading this book, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I was definitely in the "thinking about it" phase, but was nowhere near the "I'm serious about doing this" milestone.

So why am I giving this book 4 stars, if it wasn't able to help me quit smoking despite my reluctance to do so?

Because it could have... if I'd only allowed it to happen. I was already losing my desire to smoke, but I persisted in lighting up anyway because I didn't want to give it up, even though I was feeling more and more inclined to do so.

(And yes, I'm aware that this sounds nonsensical, but one can be equally determined to do something that isn't sensible, as easily as one can be determined to do something that is sensible. Not an excuse, just a statement of fact.)

Despite my (willful) failure, I've hung onto this book. I'll be rereading it when I'm truly ready to quit... and I'm certain it will enable me to do so successfully.

I received an advance reading copy of this book courtesy of Arcturus Digital via Netgalley.

YEAH…….WE DID IT BESTIES!!!!! This shit right here!!!! It’s so sensible and pragmatic and presented in the most approachable way. Ain’t no “holier than thou,” soapbox, high-horse-ing in this here book. I am straight-up GIDDY RN Y’ALL!!!! Fuck a man named Will Power I literally do not know him!!! I’m not gonna smoke anymore bc it simply doesn’t do anything for me, not bc it’s an issue of wills. CRAZY!!! I’m so excited to wake up tomorrow and NOT rip my juul literally the second I open my eyes. And then I get to wake up every single day after that and not hit my juul. I love it for me!!!!

Been free of nicotine for like 70 days, but...it's like my tenth or more attempt so I figured why not give this a read. It was fantastic. If someone thinks that smoking benefits them in any way (pleasure, weight, whatever) get them to read/listen/watch allen carr. De-brainwashing done right.

The author presents a compelling argument for understanding the complexities of addiction and its impact on individuals. Through relatable examples and personal experiences, he effectively demonstrates the importance of acknowledging our flaws and taking control of our lives. This book offers valuable insights into overcoming addictive behaviors, and encourages readers to take action despite their fears. Overall, I highly recommend this powerful memoir to anyone looking to better understand themselves and improve their lives. Personally, this book has made an incredible impact on getting rid of bad habits in general.

Someone said “exposing myself on Goodreads”😅
I forgot I bought this book in April, then randomly decided to quit in July before I even read it, but I figured i might as well end the year w it since I already accomplished my goal of quitting in 2024 & I spent $13 on it.

Had to stop reading it at like 50% because of author’s evident narcissism, repetitiveness, and fluff that in no way contributed to giving actionable steps to quit smoking for half the book. Maybe I’ll give it another try eventually but this guy annoyed the hell out of me. He seemed to see himself as a mystical guru who can cure all and if somebody doesn’t end up quitting smoking it’s not because of anything wrong with his process, but because they weren’t ‘ready to receive’ his ‘sage advice.’ If he didn’t have such an intolerable personality maybe I could’ve actually given his method a go, but I’m personally gonna try something else.

This book is worth it honestly and I’m not one to fall for the hype usually. I’ve been a smoker for over 20 years of many different ways. From Vapes, Cigarettes, Black and Milds, Marijuana. I want to say after chapter 5 I was good and ready to quit and I never looked back after that. All this book does is motivate you to quit. It doesn’t give you any tricks or tips on how to quit. He just talks to you for hours about your addiction and explains to you how ridiculous it is to smoke. Some will quit some won’t but if you are ready to let it go this book may be the motivation you need.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. As someone who has tried in multiple occasions to quit vaping but had previously been unsuccessful; i was doubtful that there could possibly be an “easy way” to quit vaping. Allen Carrs Easy way encourages a mindset shift. Instead of quitting vaping with the willpower method, quit knowing that you are not sacrificing anything, but gaining everything.

I can describe this book only as a psychological torment, in conjunction with a breath of fresh air (pun absolutely intended). There are a number of reasons I'd describe it in this way. Firstly, it's a kind of masochistic hell I wouldn't wish upon anyone - for a book that describes itself as abject to 'shock' treatment, it is degrading, contrarian, and downright violent in its wording.

For instance, in the opening chapter the author suggests he will make no attempt to bring up ideas of inadequacy, health issues, monetary issues, etc., and instead focus on the positives of quitting. Meanwhile, the book is filled with phrases such as 'stupid,' 'filthy,' 'pathetic,' and makes abundant references to all number of financial, moral, and health-related burdens. This contrarian attitutude did annoy me, however, it honestly seems like it's rewired something in my brain.

Secondly, the author advises you to smoke while reading the book. On average, I'll smoke 3-6 cigarettes a day. Over the 2-3 hours I spent reading this, I smoked somewhere around eight. I felt nauseous, headachey, and like I'd just swallowed a nest of fire ants - and by the end of it, I wanted to do absolutely anything but smoke another cigarette.

However, given how absolutely painful this experience was, I feel excited to quit - not fearful, burdened, or self-pitying in the manner I usually do when I make an attempt. So, really, I think this might work - and I'll up my rating to five stars if I find myself free, which really, I think I will.

I read this book after seeing that Holly Whitaker (author of "Quit Like a Woman") recommended it. I had made the decision to quit drinking alcohol, and was intrigued about the topic of what the substance really does to our bodies -- how it leads to 7 different types of cancer and destroys the liver and the skin cells, the colon, the esophagus ... your BRAIN -- Basically any cells that come into contact with it. Alcohol causes the very anxiety that many of us have sought to relieve with that substance. it's a gerbil wheel of damage. And I wanted off. This book, by Allen Carr, helped me understand the cyclic nature of drinking alcohol, and explains the rational very clearly for how and why to quit. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to hear it straight.

I really enjoyed the book. I can’t explain how it works, I only know it does. The same vape I would panic grab within 2 seconds of opening my eyes every morning- I threw it in the trash when this book told me to without so much as blinking. I had no emotional attachment to my vape. No fear of what am I going to do when I’m having a bad day at work. Truly by the end of this book all those worries of “what will I do without my vape” or thoughts of “I’m going to miss my vape” evaporated. I’ve been addicted to nicotine for 13 years. I tried quitting cigarettes probably 20 times before I went to vaping and felt like I don’t know how I could ever quit because it had become my binky with me 24/7. This shifted something in my mind and mentally changed me for the better.

ok i have never smoked a cigarette in my life but olivia recommended this to me as im going through it and really assessing my addiction to PEOPLE PLEASING and CODEPENDENCY and this actually popped off. the idea that the thing i think is fixing the problem is actually causing the problem and the advice that when you feel a trigger you should use it as a moment of gratitude because now you know you’re free…. mr carr really taught me something there. also, someday this detail of doing easyway despite never having used nicotine in my life will feature as a fun detail in a novel and that alone makes it worth it

Did not work

I knew and agreed with everything. It tastes bad, doesn’t do anything for me, i don’t enjoy it, i only smoke because i am addicted, like duh. And despite all that i still can’t stop. Can’t turn my mind off from it. I was in jail for a year and not one withdrawal symptom was awful cause you know you cant smoke. He is 100% correct about that. Doesn’t do anything for stress cause it doesn’t solve problems. I can’t agree more. But knowing all that does not stop the tightness in your chest or the obsessive thoughts. Just thinking about quitting causes you to smoke. Supposedly stop the desire and its so easy. But no one wants to be a smoker so makes no sense. Made me feel like something was wrong with me cause it didn’t work.

Normally, I don’t write book reviews or reviews for anything. After having been recommended this book, I took it up and had the opportunity to read it over vacation and on my first couple weeks back. This book is life changing. Having been a smoker for 7+ years, I have tried to quit multiple times. This book shifted my perspective and showed me the TRUTH about smoking. Since then, I quit about 1 month ago and have no plans of turning back. I am extremely thankful to have come across this book and would recommend it to anyone who has the itch to quit.

Thank you easyway team. You’re continuing to change lives of people like me throughout the world, truly.

It works

I chose to read this book after I personally witnessed it work for my wife. I thought I had the easy way with Chantix, Nicorette Lozenges, flavored toothpicks, gum, mints, and food. About 70% into this book i realized I was going about quitting all wrong and that I wasted my money on a Dr visit, Chantix, Nicorette Lozenges, and every other thing I tried to replace smoking with. Read this book it will work and you can do it. I smoked a pack or more everyday for over 32 years. Come get free, you can do it.

Will power matter for all the behavior changes? Smoking comes from the individual with multiple illusions, such as stress or focus or trying not to think about something. Smoking comes from bar culture. People love to drink and smoke during conversation. It's hard to continue the discussion if you do not do it. People accept that they will have lung cancer and die, so they continue smoking without thinking about the people they love. I like how the author lays out small things to consider in each short chapter. Very entertaining to listen to.

Only just finished the book, and so only just had my last cigarette. But for the first time I don't feel a bit of anxiety in quitting. I tossed the rest of my pack and felt nothing but done. I didn't even want the last one, but as the book says: follow the instructions, and one is to have that last cigarette. So, I did.

I don't doubt that I'm done. The book made perfect sense and fit my experience exactly. By the time I started it, I was ready to be done. By the time I read it, I knew I was done.

Like the book says, I am already a non-smoker.

The best book to read for smoking cessation. Priod!!
I listened to this audiobook four years ago. First time I stopped smoking for 6 straight months! After a stressful life challenge I fell off the wagon.
The second time I read it I never wanted to go back to smoking again! And always identify myself as a NONSMOKER!
Thank you Allen. You're a real life savor.

I remembered the book after listening to Mel Gibson on The Joe Rogan Show and wanted to show my gratitude.

Amazing!

This is my 2nd time having to read this book. I slipped and picked up smoking after my mom became ill and I was using it for stress relief. I knew exactly what I needed to do. I quit a 20 year disgusting habit after many failures with this book. I knew without a doubt I could fix this momentarily relapse.
