Sad, but uplifting. That would be the summary for this book. It had been on my list to read since I started working in the library here. I just hadn't gotten around to it. Then we did a weeding of the books, getting rid of the ones that were outdated, unpopular, or just plain broken down - like this one. OK...so it is a little outdated too. Kids today can't really relate to the way things were back in the 60s to early 70s when this story happened. Ellen and her sister Jana both seemed to be highly influenced by the hippie culture that was especially pervasive in California where they lived. What can kids today relate to in this book? Friendship, family, death & the acceptance of that fate. I would like to think that I could face my fate with as much grace as Ellen, but it seems extraordinary. To be so young, 15, and to be able to live life to the fullest with the acceptance that you will not live to be much older. I think that is a lesson for all of us, no matter where we are in our lives. Live life to the fullest - you never know when it will come to an end.

I've been searching for this book forever! Everytime I search I'd get a bunch of results about ellen DeGeneres 🙄🙄🙄. Anyways, this is one of those unforgettable books I read in high school that stayed with me. This is a sad but beautiful story. It's been a few years so I am definitely going to reread it. Hopefully I can find a copy. Will review further thereafter.

A beautifully sad story of a life gone too soon. But a brave outlook on how a sweet teenager dealt with her cancer. I read this back in high school and decided to pick it up again.
