Rate this book

It is hard to judge the kind of "long term" history that Milza aims for: I am not familiar with such broad-focus studies, and of course many of the periods covered (from the inception of the Roman Empire to the Italy of Berlusconi) I knew very vaguely if at all - however I might add that despite Milza's best efforts, many of those periods remain quite blurry after working my way through the 1000+ pages of his book. He is not to blame.
Probably this is the kind of book that need to be read several times, or at least the kind of book you return to as your more narrowly framed readings demand specific introductions. Departing starkly from the cultural histories I am more familiar with, this one covers not only all periods, but also all fields, with a particular emphasis on political and economic history. The cultural history is unsurprisingly cursory and largely focused on art and literature, both of which the author clearly knows as well as the succession of states, wars and governments: that is to say very well.
The style is -in keeping with the French tradition- a bit rigid for someone used to the easy-on-the-eye, entertaining history which is common today, and I regret the Annales School influence did not lead the author to further theorizing... but then again the book is long enough as is, and that would probably fall outside the scope of his project...
