We’ve seen the shaggy beards, the dirty clothes, and vacant looks. Derelict campgrounds emerge overnight. Alcohol soaked beggars falter down sidewalks. We may feel empathy; we may feel scorn. We contemplate what actions or decisions render a decrepit alleyway as a residence for the night; and if such fate has befallen a person, how do they ever come back?
SHELTERED follows Joe, a chronically homeless person fighting mental illness, on his path back to securing safety. With the help of Malik, a housing coordinator at Crossroads Men’s Emergency Shelter, Joe navigates the emotional minefields of social services, emergency room admissions, and personal isolation to once again find a life beyond homelessness. From chaos to relative stability Joe redefines success for himself, and provides an intricate new perspective on what we all need to remain intact as individuals.
