Life...Intercepted!: Life Changing Lessons Learned From Moments of Failure

Rate this book
Life has been throwing interceptions at all of us since the beginning of time. Nobody has been able to escape the fact that sometimes things don’t turn out how we had hoped or envisioned. Indeed, when hopes, plans, and dreams are thwarted, we commonly express the design change by saying, “life got in the way.” “Life…Intercepted!” is about those life-changing moments and the idea that “interceptions in life” can be turned into triumphs—or at least into critical learning experiences to help navigate us through our existence.

In 1975, during the middle of his sophomore year in high school, Ken left his beloved hometown in Idaho and moved with his parents and siblings to Ogden, Utah. His life was turned upside down by this horrifically inopportune event. Ken did everything he could to prove what a terrible mistake his parents had made. However, ultimately something he could not help doing— in spite of his best efforts— was to finally enjoy, and even come to love his new hometown.

Enjoy the experience through Ken’s eyes as he uses his high school football participation as the backdrop to gaining a better understanding of the many adversities life throws at us. Feel the excitement of the game, the comradery of the teammates during the ups and downs of their senior season, and the impact that being a part of something bigger than oneself can have. Cozy up in your favorite chair and take a little walk back in time, reminisce about the good old days, then contemplate how the interceptions in your life have become life-long treasured lessons from which to grow.

Cheer the victories, lament the failures, and let Ken’s experiences evoke deep emotions to simultaneously guide your own positive reaction to challenges you face while helping others better handle their own interceptions in life.

It is no stretch to say that Kenny came into this life with a bang. While walking towards the hospital emergency room, his heavy-with-child mother suddenly exclaimed that he was coming and she couldn’t walk any further. His dad picked her up and began running across the parking lot. As they entered the building, Kenny could wait no longer, and was born on the lobby floor of the hospital.

Life was a series of exciting events from that day on. Kenny has lived in Oregon, Washington (4 separate times), Alaska, Idaho, Utah (2 times), and Hawaii. He is the last known victim of the dreaded polio virus, having contracted it at age 2 ½. (Okay, that is actually completely untrue, but the doctors are always surprised to hear that he contracted polio at the very end of its life in the United States).

Beginning in 1978, Kenny lived in Japan for two years where he served a mission and learned the Japanese language. Upon returning from his mission to Japan, Kenny met and married his beautiful wife, Kelly, who took a giant risk and said ‘yes’ when he popped the question. They have six children, and currently, nine grandchildren. They are hoping for more. Grandchildren that is.

In 1986, Kenny graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Japanese Language. Within less than a year he had promptly forgotten everything he learned. A few years later, he attended the University of Hawaii at Moana to pursue an MBA. Life got in the way, and he left after one semester, returning with his wife and family to Washington, where the next six or so years included a stint at owning a construction business; roofing sales; and funeral and cemetery pre-arrangements.

During this time Kenny also went to a local Community College to collect necessary prerequisites to gain entry into Physical Therapy school. For a few years, he managed to run his own construction company, intern at a local physical therapy office, and attend school in the evenings-- all with his wife and 5 children. Upon completion of prerequisites, he was unable to get into a physical therapy program – end of PT journey.

It was at this time that Kenny and his wife decided to take a different turn, which led him to IT certifications and securing a position in the IT field where he has remained now for over 20 years.

Kenny has two books in print currently and many more rolling around in his noggin; some started; others just a glimmer of imagination; and all begging to jump into the ink and onto the pages of a manuscript.

Be sure to check back often (after reading his current books, of course) for the next installment!
