This is such a joy of a book! Set up during the summer in 1994 Dialann Emily Porter - An Jailtacht portrays a world that is much different than the one we live in today though it is delightful in every detail. Written in diary form we witness Emily Porter navigate her feelings and dynamics regarding family and school, relationships, friendships and simply, growing up.
Very wittily written mixing English and Irish (it starts off in English and the more time Emily spends at the Gaeltacht, more and more Irish permeates the pages) it is the ideal read for adult learners of Irish who perhaps don’t feel too confident with their cúpla focal, since the Irish sentences are always supported by English written contexts. Because it is written in the form of a teenager diary, the sentences are also very fluid and easy to grasp.
It’s a clever, funny and heartwarming (and perhaps a little nostalgic to those who were teenagers in the 1990s).
Highly recommended for tweens and young teens who have connections with Ireland and for adult learners of Irish who are seeking an easy and enjoyable read to improve their gcuid Gaeilge.
