Born on the Fifth of July: Recreated in Vietnam

Rate this book
In 1989, Tom Cruise starred in the Oscar-winning movie Born on the 4th of July, based on the true story of Ron Kovic, an embittererd paralyzed Vietnam veteran who became a very vocal anti-war protester. Although understandable based upon his life experiences, I consciously chose not to be poisoned by all that had been thrown in my path. I consciously chose a different route. God allowed me to experience 'post traumatic growth' in my healing journey. My story differs from the one that Tom Cruise portrayed. I was not born on the 4th. I was Born on the 5th of July. For me, that means that, by God's grace, I was born in America, and He enabled me to follow the example of my father and serve my country in our nation's military. It also means I salute the flag and pledge my allegiance to 'one nation under God.' It means there are some things worth fighting for, and, if need be, worth dying for. I'm proud to be American and proud to be Born on the 5th of July.

This is an inspirational story about a Vietnam veteran that almost lost his life in a field of landmines. He was prideful and had a lot of spiritual issues before going to the war, but God redeemed him to do more in this world and used severe trials to bring his heart around! It's written as if your grandpa was telling you the story of his life.. which is very endearing. I saw Tim Lee speak in person at our church (Crossway Baptist, Springfield) and was motivated to purchase this book to learn more about him. I love real life stories of people who endure things that we can't even imagine... only to walk closer to God than most people.

Though I have heard Tim Lee preach and/or give his testimony scores of times there was much I did not know. This autobiography is a fantastic testimony of God's work in a life filled with many twists, turns and bumps along the way [often the fault, self-admittedly, by the author. Yet God proved, and continues to prove, Himself faithful all the time.
I laughed, I wept, I was encouraged, enlightened and inspired by this book. Highly recommended.

Well written account of the author's journey. His troubled youth to Marine warrior, to crippling injury, to finding god and becoming a Evangelist. A story of tragedy and triumph. Recommended reading.

You don’t read this book for the writing, but the story itself is so compelling! The author did a great job writing about his childhood and time in Vietnam. Before reading this book I was not familiar with his ministry so I wish he had gone into more detail there. But all in all very inspiring!

An American Heroes story of tragedy, forgiveness, mercy and grace. I had the opportunity to hear Evangelist Tim Lee speak at Kerwin when I was a teenager. His testimony is amazing to hear.

I enjoyed this book. As a Marine I could live some of the things he had been through. Not a lot but some a very good read.
