So I'm wondering, is this the first time we've ever had Donna written by a woman writer? Jenny did a wonderful job! This was a full on science fiction epic, with bizarre aliens, and alien races on the brink of destruction and a massive space station. A story that worked very well on audio because it had such a big scale and no need to worry about the CGI budget. (Though I am still sad we didn't actually get to see Catherine Tate in the wenches outfit!) There was also a lot of fun banter, and a lot of fantastic lines for Donna! Some sad and kinda terrifying moments too. Brilliant all round!

Though on a 2nd listen I did end up thinking, Dear Gods Tennant's doctor is an insufferable twat! Every other line...

While I don't think a lot of the story is sticking in my head (this happens occasionally when I listen and drive), there was definitely good stuff here. I mean, beyond just a new Donna-Doctor story starring Tate and Tennant. What struck me most was how well this adventure highlighted Donna's compassion. It's not something you think about as much with her, not compared to her yelling at the world and being witty and everything, but Donna has always proven herself to be deeply compassionate. I like how much this story showcased that.

I suspect that three new Donna-Doctor stories aren't gonna be enough for me.

Not bad. Not my favorite. This one did not ring as true to the tenth doctor as the other audio's in this series and that bothered me a bit, but still worth listening to.

Voice acting was on POINT!!! What a performance.

Hah! This was fun to listen to. It's great to hear David Tennant as the 10th Doctor along with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, together again! So great!

Spoilers:
Lets see... So something needs to be repaired on the Tardis, so the Doctor takes them to a sketchy planet he's fond of that's basically a giant space terminal, but with a lot of criminal element. Once there, they get involved with an outbreak of Time Reavers (!), which are weapons used to force people to live in a sped up life, caught experiencing a few seconds as weeks, months or years, and they can kill or be used to prolong torture. They're wildly illegal, and the Doctor must put a stop to this!

Well, it turns out this one girl brought some from her homeworld, and she's being tortured by space octopus pirates in order to get her to give them more. The Doctor teams up with the police, and frees her! But, then she escapes, followed by Donna, and both are lost. The Doctor confronts the police chief, and down below in the tunnels, Donna confronts the girl, and together we find out what's going on!

-The girl is the chief's daughter.

-They're both members of an alien race, a race that recently took over this planet, but come from another planet.

-Their planet is dying, somehow their sun is getting bigger in the sky and they'll die soon. Their race does everything together, and they can't all evacuate, so they're all planning on returning to the planet so they can all go out together.

-Everyone on the planet really likes watching their sunsets, so the chief is actually a scientist who invented a device to stretch out time for people to enjoy the sunsets longer, but in doing so, inadvertently reinvented Time Reavers.

-When the chief figured out what he'd really made, he stopped the research program. However, his naive daughter stole the ones already made and went to this planet to sell them to people so they could have fun longer. She was immediately captured by pirates and shown first hand what bad guys used them for!

So, after that point the Doctor and the chief catch up with Donna and the girl. However, the pirates catch up with them too, and the chief is killed, but also Time Reaved, so he's torture killed! Donna convinces the girl to tell them where to find her hidden stash of Time Reavers, so the Doctor uses the rest of them all... on himself!

Just as he's finishing up experiencing 7 centuries of alone time in his head, the pirate tries to escape the planet, but the girl catches him! After a fight, it turns out she had one left, and she Time Reaves the pirate with it, and he burns alive for months of subjective time as his ship explodes in slow motion!

Afterwards, everyone goes home, and the Doctor decides what he really missed during his 7 century time out was a good book, so they decide to go to a library!

***********************

The good:

Tennant and Tate! Just, everything to do with that pairing.

Donna's speech to the girl after her dad died. "You know what my father told me when he passed away? Whatever you do... make sure you tell everyone where you hid your stash of alien weapons..." Heh, something like that. So awesome!

The Not As Good:

It was weird that the devices, meant for non nefarious purposes, were in the shape of guns anyway.

No one gets in trouble for all the deaths? That girl definitely murdered that space octopus pirate...

There are people all over the place being Time Reaved while doing drugs... how? There was only one, it had just arrived, and the rest were hidden.

How were they using these if they can only be used for one shot?

Why did the Doctor shoot himself with these things, instead of aiming them at the wall or something?

All in all, super fun to listen to!

The second in this initial set of three audio adventures for the Tenth Doctor is as good as the first. This time the setting is a futuristic one, an interstellar transit hub with a reputation for lawlessness. The story concerns smugglers importing a particularly nasty weapon (more accurately, a torture device that can be attached to a weapon) with an octopus-like alien as the main villain. It would be expensive to do well on TV, taking advantage of the fact it only has to be realised on audio.

Colgan also seems to have a better handle on Donna than Fitton did, making her less of an interchangeable companion here than in the previous story. In particular, some of the banter we often saw between the two leads on TV is reproduced here, allowing more of Donna's distinctive personality to come across, as well as showing off her softer side. Tennant, of course, is superb, and there's a good turn from the supporting actors as well (three of whom also appeared in other roles in the TV series).

The story is something of a change of pace from the usual monster fare, with a good mix of action and character-oriented moments, as well as some of the humour of the RTD era. As with the prior episode, the plot isn't particularly deep, not least because of the 60-minute run time, but it's a good evocation of the fourth season of the new series without feeling as if it's just retreading old ground.

Time Reaver is definitely perfect for fans of the the 10th Doctor & Donna. Overly theatrical villain, random sci-fi concept, ridiculous alien side characters, it has it all… except I don’t like that era one bit. This story does build upon it I suppose and you get less pretentious sanctimony from Donna which is a blessing, and the 10th Doctor is actually saying things that aren’t just pointless and quirky. The actual concept this story revolves around is just so boring though. Alien weapon that slows down time. Hardly Ghost Light is it? I mean sure it’s only there as a catalyst for the comedy and drama that follows, but I really didn’t feel like having your whole story revolve around some fairly boring is the best way to go. The story has a lot of fun with the planets law enforcement, and there is some drama there (if ineffective) but does provide some fantastic comedy.

Lines that actually made me laugh, which I felt unlikely with this one; yet there were some great comedic premises set up and fulfilled there. I think this story doesn’t put too much effort into having an original narrative, so a pastiche of Dr Who ideas with bits of intermittently funny comedy throughout wasn’t going to win any prizes for originality. The production elements of the story were fab though, fantastic music and really vivid sound design, it was hard not to be impressed by those. Tennant and Tate give really strong performances and I think credit goes to them for being able to so effortlessly slip back into those roles, and it’s aspects such as that which gave this story a really legitimate ‘watching this on tv in 2008’ feel. All in all, some very good aspects, but ultimately the story just blurs away into forgettable once it’s over.

Another great audio book!

Since I just reviewed one of these, I'll skip all the stuff about why I love these audio adventures so much and just get right to the story.

In Time Reaver, the Doctor and Donna find themselves on a planet that is basically one big travel stop. Think Traverse Town in Kingdom Hearts or Central Station in NYC but with Aliens and made entirely out of mechanical parts.

As usual, what should be a quick trip for the Doctor and Donna turns into a life or death situation when they meet Cora, a young girl on the run from some creepy octopus pirate guy. Cora has a time reaver, a gun that slows down time for the person who is shot with it, and the octo-pirate wants it for himself.

The adventure that follows is incredibly sad and makes you ask yourself what you would do if your planet and everyone you love were on the brink of death.

Since the story is so short, I don't want to give too much away. So I'll leave it at this: If you are a Whovian and a 10th Doctor fan, give this a listen!

Calibris. Where swashbuckling is encouraged so long as you have the proper licences.

Another fine audio adventure that plays out like a radio program more then a book that has Donna and the 10th Doctor stopping by the planet Calibris after the TARDIS needs some repairs. While they are there a potentially deadly weapon called the Time Reaver ends up in the wrong hands and our heroes go on an adventure to save the universe before truly gruesome deaths can spread into the universe. Like the first one in this series the original actors return to fulfill their characters' rolls feeling like you are watching Doctor Who but only with your ears. If you want you can imagine everything going on however you like with these audio plays (even something silly like everyone is a Looney Toon if you are so inclined) even though they paint you a pretty good picture with what's going on though listening to it more then once will allow you to pick up things you might have missed the first time through.

The Time Reaver concept gave us so many freaking feels, especially when Ten sacrificed himself again like the selfless bean that he is. Even with Moffat-level time lengths induced (not my fave), there's nothing like Ten shooting himself to save a bunch of folks. His speech comforting Donna as he slipped away was so beautifully mysterious, "I am a Time Lord. We are not strangers, eternity and I." Like, I wasn't expecting larger-than-life chills from Ten on a Big Finish. *squeal* These stories just love to whump him and I am not complaining at all.

Not to mention Donna and the awesome banter about Ten's wardrobe full of wench clothing LMAO. And how this story led right into Silence in the Library cuz Ten missed books in his Time-Reaver-sleep. Lovely. And Ten going "It's adorable when they try to legislate the place" or something. Bless.

And to close off, that beautifully Waters-of-Mars-flavored line at the end from Ten, "Eternity, I hear you calling. But you will not have me yet." Aaaa love it!

The second of the David Tennent audiobooks and so far, the best of the audiobooks. Taking place on a plant all about transportation, the story involves an illegal weapon capable of altering time itself on an individual. The Doctor and Donna work with a species all about laws and regulation to find and deal with the source of the weapons. Along the way they learned about the sad ending of a planet along with the use of time reavers, the weapons to try and enjoy the last of their time. Things did not go well, and another Alien were selling the timer reavers. The story wrapped up with the Doctor being trapped in his mind for a time and the alien dying. The death was very similar to a death from Bleach and the idea of the Doctor being trapped within his own head is interesting. Also, the joke about the music player was rather good and the music was great.

Audiobooks like this also makes me miss David Tennant time as the Doctor. So far, the stories are great.

Jenny T. Colgan knocked this one out of the park! Full sci-fi mode, with such on point banter from the Doctor and Donna that it seemed to be lifted straight from the show. What I would give to see those two deliver some of these lines on screen together. David and Catherine are phenomenal, per usual, and I don't think anyone could have been disappointed in them with Colgan's absolute ace writing. Time Reaver was such a neat adventure, super interesting, and born from a naive hope of helping one's people. I loved it. It also slips perfectly into canon, right before Silence in the Library.

There was one line that is definitely going to stick with me, and that was the very last line, delivered by Tennant with such gut wrenching perfection that I just want to shout from the rooftops.

"Eternity, I hear you calling. But you will not have me yet."

Time Reaver is another example of the effort Big Finish puts into reproducing the era of a particular Doctor. Time Reaver would have sat very comfortably in the Tennant canon of televised Doctor Who and could very easily have been filmed. It is on a par with stories like Planet of the Dead and New Earth. The Doctor and companion arrive on a planet for mundane reasons (needing a spare available only from a scrap yard) and behind the scenes on the planet something nasty is cooking away. The Doctor steps in, takes charge, defeats a blobby baddy, and the powers that be have to change their ways. In between there are some funny bits, with Donna really winding up the Doctor's know-it-all pomposity, and some emotional bits, with more of Donna's growing maturity. There are no surprises, but it is quite a bit of fun.

This was fun but largely the entertainment is in hearing David Tennant reprise his role as the 10th Doctor along with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. The plot is simple and not many surprises. The concept of a device which can prolong your own personal experience of one moment in time was interesting. The voices of the other characters though and background noises were much louder at times than the main voices; to the detriment of the overall production.

It's just ridiculously brilliant to have Tennant and Tate back together for these stories. This one is about a species facing the death of their world that engineer time reaver tech to make a second last for hours/years. There are some creepy bits where the tech is weaponised and used for torture to prolong pain, the parts where the Doctor reacts to eternity are masterful, and as usual, Donna Noble elevates any situation that's she's in!

3.5

Great setting that fuels the imagination, and with a weapon that uses one of the shows key concepts in a terrifying and unique way, both aided by Big Finish’s immersive sound design and directing. It’s as hectic and rushed as David Tennant’s stories often were, with shallow speeches and unsatisfyingly easy fixes to situations, but I certainly had fun with this.

A pretty hard-to-follow story, but I bumped it up to 3 stars because of that sly reference to Donna's having something on her back, as well as this exchange:
"I think I have the air of a space buccaneer"
"You have the air of a primary school teacher.... On non-uniform day" 😂😂😂

The Doctor and Donna Noble together again. What else can you ask for? A little short for my taste but David T. and his companion are a great team and it is well worth the listen. A note, better to by at bigfinish.com instead of Amazon. The story feats the Doctor Who universe.

A fantastic premise with a hoot of a location and a fascinating "weapon" on the loose is let down a bit by dodgy pacing and Big Finish' tendency to overproduce their audio sound fx, but still an enjoyable romp. For our full reviews, see http://travelingthevortex.com/?p=8848

entertaining, albeit substance light, this audio adventure featuring The tenth doctor and Donna felt like a frenetic lost episode that had been scrapped as too much filler. at 57 minutes it's a brief fast paced, even if mostly unmemorable, romps with everyone's favorite time Lord

Time Reaver was good, but not as good as Technophobia. The screaming and the voice of octopus-like foe Gully got grating and obnoxious. But I do like the concept of a gun that slows down time for people, and hearing how it was used by others before.
