Recently named a “40 under 40” by a prominent fashion magazine, Southern charmer and Harvard-educated Caroline Johnson spends her days building a successful handbag business and nights lamenting her nonexistent love life while drinking Chardonnay at her best friend’s bar. Her intelligence and professional acumen are often disregarded because of her good looks, thick accent, and overly accommodating style. When Caroline’s Aunt Mimi points out that the “under 40” part won’t last forever, Caroline recognizes it’s time to start designing her personal life.

Mike (aka Michael Frederick Barnsworth III) was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and can trace his lineage to the founders of America’s first bank. Much to his family’s dismay, he refuses a corner office at the Barnsworth Brokerage Firm, instead using his Harvard education to open a bar. Irreverent and flirtatious, Mike seems content to engage in one-night stands with local beauties and romantic dalliances with his waitresses, all the while listening to Caroline’s dating woes and keeping her wine glass full.

Much like the right accessory, Caroline knows her partner needs to be perfectly matched, so she endures a series of disastrous relationships she compares to styles of handbags: the “Hobo” or starving artist; the “Diaper Bag” or single dad; the “Briefcase” or intense businessman, etc. while searching for the “Clutch.”

Will Caroline heed her Aunt Mimi’s advice to “find something you love and hold onto it?” And could the “Clutch” have been in front of her the entire time?

Low on angst and high on humor, Clutch will have readers rooting for Caroline to find someone to hold onto.

“Mimi always told me to find something you love and just hold onto it. And that something I want to clutch is you.”

I’m a sucker for friends to lovers and this book didn’t disappoint.

This book follows Caroline and Mike. They met in class and one time they hooked up but have decided to just be friends ever since. We then see Caroline experiencing various relationships that have always failed. But Mike has always been there. Could they ever be more than friends?

Thank you to the author for a copy of Clutch! I absolutely adored Mikes and Caroline’s story.

I generously received an ARC of this book via the author, Lisa Becker in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! :)

:: 5 Hilarious Stars ::

This book is absolutely hilarious! I really enjoyed reading about the dating misadventures of the main character, Caroline. She is smart and spunky, but can’t seem to find her one true love no matter what type of guy she dates. Mike, her best friend since they met in Harvard, is just as funny. He’s the type of guy that never settles down. He likes to run his bar, have a couple flings, and call it a night. When the two get together, they always banter back in forth, sharing silly jokes, and just being content in one another’s company. But neither think to date. The two are complete opposites, right?

Author Lisa Becker does a wonderful job with this book. Readers can relate to the characters- they have either dated someone like Mike, or they share one of the many qualities of Caroline. What I also liked about this book is the chapter labels. Each one is a handbag description and funny enough, each handbag description relates to the type of relationship Caroline will encounter in that chapter- how unique is that? I really loved it, it’s very clever. So, readers if you’re looking for a light but fun and hilarious chick lit novel than I highly suggest you read this one. It will not disappoint!

Clutch was a light, sweet, funny read! I absolutely loved the chapter names and how they related to Caroline’s dates.

“Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can,” she lifted her glass, “and a tall glass of Chardonnay to accept the things I can’t. That’s about the only gospel I can get behind.”

Caroline, purse addict and handbag designer, is looking for the one. Unfortunately, she is only finding losers. Her best friend since business school, Mike is with her along the way for the entire hilarious journey. He is a bar owner and keeps her covered in the wine area.

I absolutely loved Mike in this story! He is such a good friend, even if he is a bit of a man-whore. I liked Caroline by the end of the story, but at times, especially in the beginning, she was a bit annoying with her inability to confront people.

“It was a revelation. How had she not seen it before?”

While at times predictable, and quite a bit repetitive, I did enjoy this story. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a lighthearted, funny, sweet read. ~ Tiffany, 3 stars

Caroline Johnson left home to pursue her dream of making clutches. Her Aunt Mimi had made the art of getting a clutch something special to Caroline and she sees a niche that she is passionate about. Harvard is hard but meeting Mike has Caroline glad he sat next to her on her first day. He has been her rock and friend throughout and when he suggests they move to LA so he can open his bar, Caroline agrees. They are the best of friends and through the years they have gotten closer but will Caroline ever find Mr. Right or has he been right in front of her the whole time?

I loved that each chapter is a type of purse and fits Caroline's life at the time. I thought this was really sweet and liked Mike a lot. This was light hearted and a great book to sit outside and enjoy the sun with.

According to this story, men are like bags. And I find the comparison very amusing and very fitting. The author is very clever to come up with this idea. It's amazing. And yes, I did enjoy the story. Thanks again, Lisa W. Becker for the review copy.

For a person who likes bags and at one point, thought that the more I have them, I could have more variety and more choices to choose from. I used to think that it would be amazing to have bags in all colors to match outfits or have a different one whenever you feel like it. I'm not one who buys expensive bags. I used to want to have different styles for versatility. But now, maybe it comes with age, I realized I don't have to change bags as often and I want my bags to last. I realized, I don't need a lot of bags. Just one functional and durable one. And just like in this story, you don't all these bags but one. One you can hold dear.

And I guess, it goes the same with men. Unlike the main character in this story, Caroline, who had the luck or the misfortune of meeting these different kinds of men,  depending on how you look at it, I've only been in love three times. I have a lot of guy friends but I never ever thought of comparing them to bags which is a very clever and hilarious idea. I think the closest thing I could compare to having a relationship would be my jobs or the companies I've worked for. I think the explanation is very lengthy, so let's not get into that.  I guess, reading of Caroline's experiences with men is hilarious but if this were real life, it's actually disastrous. Yes, I do admit it's interesting to meet these varied types of men but I prefer not to engage with them knowing all these things from Caroline. I am  good just watching Caroline from the sidelines here. I don't envy her. But having a man and a best friend like Mike in her life is what I covet.

Mike, he's a good sounding board. A very reliable best friend. But the best thing about him is he wants to carve a path of his own even if it's going to be hard. Even if it would mean he could be disowned and not have the comforts and luxuries in his privileged upbringing. Not a lot of guys would have the same strength of character to turn away from that.  I know normally, a lot would bet his life living on dad's money.

Mike and Caroline. I think the reason why these two took a long while to realize they are what each one needs is because they've gotten so used to the idea that they're perfect together as best friends. It never occurred to them that they're perfect for each other more than that because of the bond and experiences they have shared. They are each other's rock. And this is what I liked most about the story. The fact that these two just simply did not see right away that they are just meant to be. It was frustrating having to witness Caroline go through these different dates or relationships and knowing that none of them were bound to last. And after each fall out, Mike was always there to deal with the aftermath. No question. He was always there. It was part of how things are. The ever supportive best friend. Ah, I just love best friends who end up together. I wish the same is true in my life.

The book is very perceptive. Again, I can't stress enough how clever  it is to compare men to purses. And it's a very accurate and very interesting metaphor which every girl could very well relate to and understand. I guess, if you have a friend who have gone through a lot of boyfriends and have not realized that she had been buying the same type of bag, just in different sizes and colors but it wasn't what she needed because it was not functional, poor in quality, and does not suit her needs, letting her read this book will probably make her come to her senses sooner than all those heart to heart talks combined. I think this is a very good book to understand men. I think every girl should read this book. The entertainment value alone is so worth the time.

With that said, I give this book 5/5 clutch bags. Again, this is a hilarious, perceptive, and very educational story. Nothing more to be said except for all of you to read it. I'm so happy that this book was handed to me.

I don't need to drive you crazy. You're close enough where you can walk there all on your own.

......

This book had me literally laughing out loud as I read along and flipped through the pages. A witty, light read that will have you in stitches, and laughing so hard that you cry and you read the trials and tribulations of Caroline Johnson’s love life and her dating experiences.

Caroline describes each of the men she goes on a date with and describes each as a type of handbag. I thought this idea was brilliant to the story and was such an interesting concept and I absolutely loved it….

There is the Hobo – a starving artist with no real job, no money, and no place to call his own, the Messenger – a man who frequently would quote the bible in his daily life, the Diaper Bag – a single dad, the Cosmetic Bag – a man who would dress us in drag for a local club and perform, and much more. That is, until she meets the man who is the Clutch – the man who is worth holding onto and never letting him go.

I loved reading about Caroline’s dating adventures and found it comical the way she would describe her dates as different types of purses. Caroline was a fun, witty character that was a joy to read about. I also enjoyed reading about her friend Mike and their friendship was like no other. He was her confidante, her best friend, and I loved Mike’s sarcasm, sense of humour and the way he would tease and get Caroline going. Such a cute, refreshing story that was a pleasure to read.

I highly recommend this book and loved it from beginning to end. Be sure to check out this book for a fabulous read!

This book was a refreshing new twist on a romance novel.

The book was split into several chapters which were all titled different handbags. Each handbag was based on a different guy to match is personality or characteristics. (i.e. Diaper Bag- singe dad)

Caroline is a southern belle who has created her own handbag business. Her best friend Mike also own his own bar where several of the book scenes and dates take place. These two friends have different views on relationships. Mike has a three date rule, and Caroline wants to find someone to love and settle down.

I loved reading about Caroline and all of her dating adventures. Even though most of the chapters are repetitive, (Caroline meets a guy, and they exchange numbers. Mike meets a girl to hookup.), the actual dating scenes are realistic and unique. The scenarios and different scenes were hilarious. I really enjoyed how the book detailed every dating disaster and success that you could possibly happen, and the one-liners and comebacks that the characters use in the book will have you doubled over in laughter.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book.

Such a cute and fun light listen! Enjoyed as we experienced all the different "bags" Caroline encounters in her dating endeavours as she tries to find Mr. Right. There were some hilarious moments and some disheartening moments throughout that made this an excellent listen. The author wraps the story up with a somewhat predictable pairing, that I personally would have liked to see more of throughout. A satisfying ending to this standalone.

Definitely loved this performance. I loved how she exaggerated Caroline's country accent in silly moments. She did an amazing job bringing Caroline to life.

I would give this 4 1/2 stars

This book reminded me of When Harry Met Sally. Caroline and Mike meet at Harvard and become fast friends. They see each other through good times and bad and have that one time in college where they hooked up....which they tease each other about all the time.

I loved the purse references and how Caroline always had a different purse, clutch, or wristlet for each outfit. I can't imagine what her closet looked like with all those bags.

While I kinda suspected that they would get together in the end, it was interesting to read about all the people that each dated (more so from Caroline's perspective) and how each man would be shot down by Mike for one reason or another. Of course we know why, he wanted Caroline for himself but wouldn't tell her.

Caroline did need to learn to stand up for herself and confront those. I get that it isn't easy but sometimes you just have to do it otherwise you will be taken advantage of in life.

The book was an easy read and had me laughing in various parts. There are some f* bombs but thankfully not too many.

I loved the idea behind this story, and since I loved the other book I read by this author, Links, I signed up to review the audiobook of this. I am a bit of a purse lover, so I looked forward to that part of the story. I loved how the author used the different types of purses to describe each of the men in the main character, Caroline's life. The book started out a little bit slow and hard for me to read. I didn't connect with Caroline at first, as she just seemed so naive. Now, with the first guy, an artist, we got some of the story kind of from his point of view. However, for the rest of the story, we didn't get that from the other guys, we only got to see Caroline's side. I think that hurt my view of her to start the story, because not only was it obvious what a douchebag that guy was, we got to actually see him being that way even when she wasn't around.

With the next guy though, my connection to Caroline filled in, and I was hooked. It seemed Mike might have been destined to just be her best friend, but I knew from the about a quarter of the way in that he and Caroline were meant to be together. Even if neither of them saw it, while everyone around them seemed to. Included Caroline's aunt Mimi, who created her love of handbags to start with. If only Caroline had taken Mimi's thoughts to heart sooner, maybe she could have saved herself some of the heartbreak of her parade of guys throughout the story. Although, not sure Mike was really ready for her yet, even if towards the end we find out just how long he might have felt more about her.

As we got to follow Caroline through her relationships, I did connect with her feelings a lot of the time. Like feeling guilty because she didn't really see the nice guy as anything more than a friend. Then of course was the guy who had gone all religious, so much that he got upset at Caroline for using the Lord's name in vain when they were getting hot and heavy. The fact that he reconciled premarital sex as being okay even with his holy roller attitude was just such a guy thing. Been there, seen those guys! Another place I've been, is going back to try to give a guy a second chance, only to find it too late, and that they've already moved on. I cried quite a bit at that part, was totally feeling all that Caroline was.

I mentioned how I loved that the author used different types of purses to describe each guy. It worked perfectly. And then there was the chapter where we had the chef, but it was a make-up bag. I was so confused about that, at first, couldn't figure out where that was going. Until I did. And then, wow, I did not see that one going! And it really made me think about what I would do in that case!

I highly recommend listening to this one. Give it the first guy to get through and you will be pleased! The happily ever after is one that was well earned, if you're like me, you'll be rooting for Mike at the end. I also love how the author made sure we knew just how things were going to go for them after the HEA. Also great was that we started out with the first guy's point of view, we also end up with the "clutch" guy's point of view at the end. Made a perfect bookend for the story.

**JOSIE'S REVIEW**

This is my first time reading a book by Lisa Becker, but I will admit the synopsis caught my eye and I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Clutch is a short read, about 140 pages but I did not feel as though anything was missing from the story. The story is told mostly by Caroline but we get some of Mike’s as well. Clutch is a woman’s novel, the humor is LOL funny and so is the main characters journey to finding love.

I enjoyed how the author titled each chapter in the book. Each chapter is names after a specific style of a purse. Once you get through each chapter you will understand the significance of the bag. Caroline and Mike have been best friends since Harvard, both have followed their dreams and are now living in LA. Mike did not follow his family’s business but instead went on to open his own bar “The Last Drop”. Carolina has her very own line of hand bags called “The Clutch”.

Caroline wants to find a man that will love and cherish her, she doesn’t understand why it is hard for her. We follow Caroline on her journey of trying to find THE MAN. Let me tell her journey was funny, but there were times where it upset me and tested my patience. What I enjoyed the most about this story is the relationship Mike and Caroline shared. They were very open and honest, shared everything together, were always there for each other and each sought the others approval on everything pertaining to their lives. The banter between the two was hilarious and it really felt natural. Throughout this story we start to see changes in Caroline. She becomes more confident in what she wants and she becomes more assertive in getting it. Mike also starts to show changes in his behavior. I loved his character before but with these changes my heart opened up more to this man. Over this journey neither thinks to date, just to remain best friends, but what happens when what you’ve been looking for is standing right in front of you all this time?

Caroline Johnson is fast becoming a huge success in her handbag designer business. She’s not such a big success in the romance department, though. It’s cute how she compares the men in her life to handbags. She sure knows how to find losers, but she also knows how to make us laugh in the process.

Caroline’s relationship with her best friend, Mike, is both realistic and refreshing to see. Both characters are delightful, fun and a joy to read about.

Clutch is the perfect book to sit back, relax and simply have a good time. I wasn’t ready for the book to end. I wanted more! It makes you laugh, it makes you smile and you may even shed a few tears. Either way, you’ll have a good time with this book and a brand new chick lit heroine in Caroline. This is my first Lisa Becker book and it definitely won't be my last.

Suzanne Barbetta’s Performance rating: ★★★★★

This actor is new-to-me, but I thoroughly enjoyed her acting style. She was fantastic at doing both female and male voices in an authentic way that wasn’t jarring at all. I’m definitely looking forward to listening to more audiobooks narrated by her.

Story rating: 4.5 stars

This novel was a giveaway selection in honor of the audiobook Facebook group Aural Fixation’s 75,000 members status. I’d never heard of this author, but the synopsis and the audiobook sample intrigued me enough to enter the giveaway. And to my surprise, I won a free gift credit to claim this gem on Audible.com.

Now normally, I don’t read books classified as ‘Chit Lit’ because my impression of them is they do not always guarantee a happy ending for the main characters. I read for adventure but also to see that adventure end in a confirmed happy after ever status. I also don’t enjoy having a lot of details about the main characters with other lovers.

This novel fell into both categories, but to my great surprise I truly enjoyed the dating in the 21st century journey Caroline went on after having a one-night stand with her then college bestie Mike. I loved that they eventually lived in the same city post-college and how much their lives intertwined as they both dated other people. I also appreciated the timing of their physical reunion and how they came to understand they should give the couple thing together a real try.

Hopefully, author Lisa Becker and narrator Suzanne Barbetta will team up again for future book projects. I’m now a new fan of both.

Find a good thing hold on to it . . .

Can I say that she was seriously in to her purses, handbags, ect. . . This was a fun read. It got me through an afternoon enjoying the weather. It was pleasant, pleasing, and took me on a ride of a young adult into her maturity. She was strong, independent, intelligent, needed, and determined. Caroline knew what she wanted to do with her life since she was a small girl and her Aunt Meme introduced her to her first clutch at seven. She followed her dreams to finish design school. She further her dream by reaching higher with auntie's persuasion to get a business degree. That may have been her best decision in the world because there she met her clutch and didn't even know it. Mike was there for her through it all. Years of terrible decisions and even worst choices in men, from art shows, to customer hookup, to bump in and even old classmates. Caroline had her life put out there. We see it all unfold. This was more than just a romance. This was Caroline's life. This was chick-lit, women;s fiction, and a bit of romance on the side. We see it all.

Narration from Suzanne Barbetta was a nice addition to this story. I did not find anything that was overwhelmingly a clutch for me but it was a layer of clear, clean audio that gave visualization to the story of Caroline Johnson's life.

Review:
I loved the way this book is written. The story just flows and the way it builds towards the end is really good!
Each chapter is named after a type of bag. It’s one of the most unique ways I’ve seen!! I loved this touch as it made the book extra special for a bag collector like me 👛👜🎒
The story of Caroline and Mike’s friendship and love is also very real and beautiful!!
My favourite part is Mimi’s dialogue ‘You find something you love and you just hold on!’🤗❤️

I would totally recommend this book as a modern fiction romance! It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s full of bags 😱😱😱

Funny.
I had already read a book in which the main character compared her dates to comfort food, but it is the first time that I see men being compared to handbags.
Of course this has everything to do with Caroline's work. She is a bag designer.

Her romantic life would make a great TV series. All men have the handsome side (like a good handbag), but after a few moments, the flaws pop out. Result: total disaster and many hours of Caroline at Mike's bar, her best friend, drinking Chardonnay.

Mike and Caroline have been friends since the time of Harvard.
He has a good life as a bar owner, without any serious relationship.
But he and Carol are always together, right?

A short book with good jokes and great reading.

I enjoyed this one. There were funny parts, sweet parts, and quirky bits. Some of the guys Caroline encountered I can certainly relate to. I liked how each one was paired with a handbag which summed them up nicely. Dating life, from what I can recall...it's been a long time, is definitely full of more misses than hits. Overall a very relatable read.

My only complaint is that some parts felt rushed. I understand that the story takes place over the course of a few years, but I think I would have liked some context and story in between the windows of time. Additionally, some scenes started well, but then left me wanting a bit more because the ends were a bit abrupt.

That being said, I am going to read more from this author soon!

Clutch was a funny, light chick-lit novel that held my interest from start to finish. We are taken on the dating adventures of Caroline, a handbag designer who compares the men she dated to different types of bags until she eventually finds the one she wants to hold on too. I enjoyed the story. There were so many hilarious moments and I really loved Caroline's best friend Mike who was there through it all.
I listened to the audible version of this novel which was narrated by Suzanne Barbetta. She did a fabulous job portraying all the characters most especially Caroline. Her timing and delivery of the story was spot on and I enjoyed listening to her.
Clutch was a unique page-turner and I would highly recommend it to all chick-lit lovers.

|Thank you @authorlisabecker #partner|

Caroline Johnson fell in love with handbags at a young age. After being educated at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and then Harvard Business School, Caroline launches her own line of purses and handbags. She enters into the complex, complicated world of dating in Southern California and likens her experiences with men to different handbag designs -- the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc. Throughout the journey and after numerous unsuccessful relationships, Caroline wonders if she'll ever meet the kind of man to hold onto, worthy of being her "Clutch."

This book was such a delight! The story is very entertaining and the concept of comparing men to handbag styles is incredibly creative! I related to Caroline in so many ways but especially through her love of fashion and looking put together, her sweet relationships with her family, and her bumbling adventures through a variety of men, none of them being quite what she's looking for (although that was many years ago for me!). You'll laugh your way through poor Caroline's romantic misfortunes and hope that each new guy is finally the right one.

Audio book narrator, Suzanne Barbetta, did a phenomenal job with author Lisa Becker's words. I didn't keep track of how many characters Suzanne played though the story but it's at least 15 -- and she performs each one so flawlessly! Listening to this book was such an enjoyable escape into the world of Caroline!

Clutch is a fun, flirty story that will make you smile, warm your heart, and may even inspire you pick up a new handbag for yourself (it's the perfect excuse)!

This was a very cute and quirky book. I adored it very much. I could relate to the main character in many ways. There was something I saw coming miles away. I was still happy to be right in the end. It was very inspirational. I can't say I agree with some of the things that happened in this book or some of the characters' opinions, but that's not really important. It made them more realistic!

The narrator did a very great job. I would be surprised to find out she's not southern at all. If she isn't, she definitely did her homework. She put the southern flair all through the book. I loved that. I'm from Georgia. That's where the main character in the book is from too. It was pretty cool!

CHALLENGE: BONUS # 4-WON FROM AUTHOR
Thanks to the author for picking me as the winner in her contest. This was my first time winning a free book in a writers sweepstakes/give away/contest. Yippee!!!

Cute, light rom-com story. It starts a little slow and is a little long but I got caught up in the story.
Mike & Caroline are charming characters who keep you interested in reading the narrative.
Some humor.

I could also totally see this as an cutesy rom-com film reminiscent of Reese Witherspoon & the Legally Blonde movies.

This was the perfect peaceful balm to read before bed during these stressful times. It hit the spot!

This light hearted chick lit romance follows hand bag designer Caroline, and her numerous laughable dating encounters. As she grows her business she compares her dating history to styles of bags: the “coin purse”, “briefcase”, and “diaper bag” to name a few. With her best friend and bar owner, Mike, by her side and always refilling her chardonnay, she searches for her ultimate “clutch” partner.

This was a fun romcom read that was relatable and a breeze to read through. Caroline’s southern roots string charm throughout her navigating Harvard and Santa Monica living. A delight summer read if your wanting something a little humorous.

This book was plain fun! From start, literally every single chapter title is a type of bag, to the hilariously awkward dates she goes on, I found myself giggling the whole way through. Caroline was simple adorable and Mike was swoon-worthy and hilarious. Their banter made for an entertaining audiobook and their chemistry had me rooting for their HEA.

Narration by Suzanne Barbetta was spot on and had me laughing the entire time. She’s a new to me narrator and I really enjoyed her work. I’m looking forward to more audiobooks from her. 4 Stars.

Living through dating/relationship mishaps are never fun, but reading about them are the best, and CLUTCH absolutely delivers!

Even though it is a bit predictable (read enough romance and this will happen), I enjoyed the laughs and the unique take on the beginning of each chapter.
