So, since I rediscovered Wonderland and how much I missed it last week, I had to start a new series set in Wonderland. I had the collection with all three books in this series on my Kindle for quite some time already, but since I prefer reading paperbacks I decided to just get those too last week. And from the moment they arrived I could barely wait to get started. I had to finish a few review copies first though, but today I could finally dive in.
This version of Wonderland was amazing! To me Wonderland is a big playground and the thing I'm always looking forward to the most is what authors do with the world. Marie does an amazing job balancing both the things that we know from the original stories and adding loads of things of her own. Therefore Wonderland has the familiar feel, with the creatures we know and heard about, while it's also surprising, fresh and new.
And this book also reminded me how awesome it is when Wonderland hasn't just one King but four. Especially if you manage, like Marie, to make them all four different. Not that rarely I have time telling the guys apart, especially in the beginning, but I didn't have that issue here. The guys had unique character traits, unique backgrounds and they all shared such different moments with Alex that I very soon started falling for them too.
And although the plot in this book wasn't that complicated yet, I liked how the stakes were very high from the start. The first chapter already really grabbed me and I can't describe how I felt when reading the last chapter, my heart breaking in a million little pieces. And that's mostly because Alex is incredibly easy to like. She has something endearing, she feels realistic and she is strong and emotional at once. I can't wait to see how her journey and story continue!
