Starfire

I was really excited to start reading Starfire as it looked so different to all the other books I have been reviewing lately, so thank you to the author for sending me a copy. And I really did enjoy reading this book so much. It was sexy and quirky and I will definitely be looking to read more from Elizabeth King.
Before I even start talking about the story though, I just want to say that the author is also an artist and not only did she illustrate her own front cover (a cover which I LOVE by the way) but she also has illustrations throughout the story which really added something special to the book for me. It is a sci-fi erotica so there are quite a few characters that are not human, and I thought it was great to have illustrations as well as the descriptions of these characters because it gave me a much better insight into how the author wanted the non-human characters to be seen by the reader. Plus, there were some illustrations of the steamier moments in the book which were fun to look at too!
Now onto the story, Zara works on a merchant ship but she is bored. Her days all look the same and she spends all her time taking inventory of the stock on the ship. But then, the ship is boarded by pirates who have come to steal all the stock they are carrying. However, the pirate captain, Elle Viola just happens to notice Zara and takes her captive to keep her as her pet back on the pirate ship. Once on the pirate ship, Zara spends her days trailing after the captain and her nights in the captain’s bed surrendering to her every desire.
I really liked all of the characters in this story and I fell in love with all of them. Zara is strong and feisty, which is what caught Elle’s eye in the first place. At first, this leads to her to trying to escape the pirate spaceship, but after a while she is also strong enough to admit that staying as the captain’s pet is actually what she desires. I loved watching her journey from struggling with the idea that she should not want this to be happening to acceptance and surrender.
Elle was probably my favourite character in the book, if I’m honest, and I loved her depth. Yes, she is the captain of a pirate ship and she spends her days battling with other ships to steal their possessions, and yes, she has a fearsome reputation and at certain points throughout the story we can see how she earned herself that reputation. But there is so much more to her than that. Elle shows such care to her pet that after a while, it’s almost impossible for Zara to remember that she is being held captive. She is a fair captain and all her staff adore her and would do anything for her. Elle is the type of character that reminds us that we are all a mix of good and bad, and her confidence and determination to do what must be done for her and her crew members actually made me admire her.
There was a lovely balance between the kink and the story in this book, with neither taking the forefront for too long. I got a good insight into each of the characters, while still being treated to some of the most erotic and sensual BDSM scenes I have ever read. I loved seeing Elle and Zara together. To me, they were the perfect match with Zara’s willingness to surrender and serve, and Elle’s caring yet slightly sadistic way of taking control of her. Forgetting for a moment that they met because Elle kidnapped Zara, watching these two together caused a warm fuzzy feeling in my chest.
I got sucked completely into this book and I didn’t want it to end. I would recommend it without hesitation to anybody who enjoys BDSM erotic romance.

I picked this up after reading the first few chapters on Ao3. It was listed with ace and kink. It really had neither. What it had was nonconsensual acts played out on Zara by Captain Viola. Consensual nonconsent is still consensual. Kink is about consent. This was a torture, rape, stockholm syndrome fetish. Are kinky activities present? Yes. But, again...nothing is consensual. There is no negotiation. There is no agreement. Zara has literally no choice. This was a fetish porn with almost zero plot. Most of the plot was disjointed and never added up to much of anything. There was also no asexual characters. There was a bottom, and a stone top. A stone top is not asexual. I realized not too long after buying the book that I wasn't going to get any of the things from this book that I had gone into it looking for. I continued to read it in the vain hope that the author might pull off a character arc and change somewhere along the way. I also read it because there are almost no reviews of this and I felt like I had to finish it so I could leave an honest review of the entire book.

Deliciously, toe-curlingly sexy. I didn't know how badly I needed this book in my life until I found it through Lianyu Tan's recommendation. I loved watching these two explore their D/s relationship and the more uncommon kinks on display here. Elle's sadistic streak is glorious to behold. She is unapologetic, confident, and possessive in all of the right ways. I loved the story, loved the worldbuilding, and loved watching Zara learn to love her role onboard the ship.
