The Bad Mother #1

Man pasirodė tiesiog lėkšta istorija.

This was a hilarious and quick read for me, and just what I needed over a sunny spring week. Written in a diary format, it is reminiscent of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary books. Unlike Bridget though, the Bad Mother's Diary is centered on a new mother who writes about cringey moments, questionable self-reflections, and new parent blunders.

I got the ebook when it was free on Amazon. I'll be looking at getting the other 5 books in the series for my summer reads.

I didn't mean to read it so quickly....

When I started this book it was simply as a filler book to tide me other until a book in a series I'm addicted to was released. The plan was to read 20 pages a night, that would get me through....I think I !managed 20 pages the first night and on the second night I couldn't put it down. My kindle died in the middle of reading and I realised it was almost 5am. Oops.

Entering the third day I'd given up my plan and allowed myself to fall into the book.

The characters are brilliant, I scowled at the wedding (even though I'd already figured what happen), I may have been muttering that Helen needed to pick her tits up and jog the F on with her interfering. Stuck snotfaced Doylum what she is. Honestly the time I realised the book was over I was hoping Nick would have so many STDs that his dick would fall off.

Definitely a read I recommend.

Round of applause for the author, I'm off to read the next one......I'm not even going to try to take it slowly, gimme gimme gimme.

I absolutely 5 star recommend this read-maybe I have been reading too many horror novels, murders and thrillers lately because this was such a breath of fresh air, it was wonderful to catch myself properly laughing out loud(although I think my kids who I woke up would disgagree...and the man in the queue behind me at the Co-op who cast a disgusted glance my way because I was reading and being a bit too loud SUE ME FOR GRABBING EVERY MOMENT FOR READING!)

Ahem. I digress...this is exactly what I expected it to be, you pick it up and dive on in . The diary format makes it so readable, enjoyable, short chapters keep the story fresh and rolling whilst you have no real sense of a back story beginning. Juliette is exactly as she is written on the page. As it's a diary as well, you get that feeling of a confessional, an intimacy with Juliette right from page one. She has a jobbing actor boyfriend who she is hoping will propose/wise up to the fact that he has responsibilities in the form of new born daughter Daisy. But with a suffocating mother in law in the form of Helen, who just happens to drop by a million times a day, how can Juliette begin to find her own feet as a parent, when the person who should be helping her is being given a hard pass on duties by his own?

Trying to reassert control over her own body, she takes up running but keeps literally falling over and  into business magnate Alex and as they spar and dance their way around each other, Juliette has to decide whether to give up on trying to get her baby's father to step-up or take a chance on someone else. And in the middle of this all is baby Daisy, assorted family and friends all weighing in with their opinions...

What I loved about the book is how refreshingly honest and disarming it is-one of the best scenes is Juliette dividing her bathroom into the things that she used pre preganncy and her necessities post-pregnancy. There is a real pathos to the expectations that society places on new mums versus the reality. It seems like everyone has their shit together except you and it is tough, it is brutal, you lose all sense of self in that time period.

It's a moving and brilliantly realised book which tackles fears, insecurities, wants and needs. It's the best women's fiction book that I have read since the last Marian Keyes and I can 100% say that it made me spit more coffee out than 'Bridget Jones' Diary ever did. Frank, dissarming and hilarious, I cannot wait to read books 2 and 3-if you sign up to Suzy's newsletter there is a free introductory novella introducing Juliette and her family so you can get a taste of what 'The Bad Mothers' series is all about!

A light-hearted read with a few funny moments and an uplifting feel-good factor.

Pros:
- It's a fun enough book that's well-suited to when you need a light read to perk you up
- The Duffy family are pretty great albeit swamped with clichés e.g. irresponsible young mother 'who's just a baby herself', a studious older sister who's a bit boring but knows exactly what to do in each situation
- The main character felt believable and relatable

Cons:
- There are no surprises in this book whatsoever, it's entirely predictable but in a cutesy romance, that's not necessarily an awful thing.
- The ending is rushed and that lets the book down, the book continually references fairytale tropes and happily-ever-afters so you kind of expect this from the very off but the conclusion just wasn't enough.
- All the male characters in the book are very simply written and are two-dimensional. Their motives are always obvious and their back stories aren't detailed or particularly interesting.

Extra note: I don't know how I feel about this as I'm torn between finding it sweet and finding it a bit cringey but in the middle of the book, the author 'interrupts' and congratulates you 'lovely ladies' on getting that far. At the very end of the book as well, there's a truck-load of self-promotion promising competition giveaways, an exclusive prequel and a note from the author saying, 'I read ALL my Amazon and Goodreads reviews (and yes, the bad ones do make me cry) and pay special attention to my favourite reviews and sometimes send special gifts as a thank you.'
Hmm - that does make me sceptical about other reviews and high ratings.

Juliette is a typical new mum, not sure if she's doing things right. She can't get her baby Daisy to sleep no matter who's advice she follows so she is physically and mentally exhausted. Nick, her partner is not helping matters, in fact he is like an overgrown schoolboy. They live in an apartment owned by Nick's mum Helen who is always popping in while being no help at all while making it clear that she doesn't think Juliette is good enough for her darling son.

Juliette would like to be the perfect mum, have a perfect Ikea home and only cook organic food but at the moment it's hard enough getting out of the apartment without her clothes being covered in baby stains.
I've been having problems getting in to some books recently and when this came in the post for review I started reading it and I couldn't stop. It is really funny and if you've had a baby you will relate to most of Juliete's problems. New mums will realise that everyone goes through the same trials as Juliette and maybe won't feel so alone.
Hopefully you won't have a partner like Nick. Oh how I would love to give him a good slap.

Juliette's parents run and live in a pub. Her mum doesn't believe in dressing appropriately for her age and size and this gives us some of the funniest moments in the book. Juliette's mum is also warm and kind and great with her granddaughter unlike the horrible Helen.
Alex is a knight in shining armour who has worshipped Juliette from afar for years and...he's rich.
Juliette will take some convincing as she doesn't want to be the one to break up her baby daughter's family as she thinks a father like Nick is better than no father at all.

Juliette is a lovely character and you just want everything to go right for her. I wanted to give her a hug and tell her it does get better. I loved her determination with her running even although she hated it.
I also loved the supporting cast of Juliette's sisters Laura and Brandi and her friend Althea and her wayward son who are hysterical.

This book is ideal if you need a good laugh and don't we all need that from time to time. As it says in the title it is written in diary form but it flows so well that I almost forgot it was.
The paragraph from the author at the beginning and end of the book is a lovely touch.

This review is from: Baby, Me, OMG: Motherhood fiction (Surprise Baby Romance) (Kindle Edition)
Will start by saying I love this writer and have read many of her previous works. This book is in a date order like you would write in a diary. That was a bit hard for me to stay on the story line. Kind of choppy this way. But the story and main character Juliette were quite true to life for I would say many women. Struggles of keeping a family together when only one is trying. Fighting against depression and weight gain while trying to be a good mom is very relative. Guide at the introduction to the book gives the reader a list of British terms not common in the United States. Having read them up front made the prose more understandable. And for all of us who dream of our White Knight you will not be disappointed in this story.

I finally got to the end of a list of books I needed to read and thought I would dive into this, and I am so glad I did.
Juliette and her antics as a relatively new mother, with a fiance who doesn't seem to be engaging with her or his daughter as much as he should, an interfering mother in law to be, an overinvolved family, oh and a vow to complete the London Marathon, all whilst feeling extreme self-doubt, overweight and unattractive, make for a fantastically funny read.
(Sorry, hugely long sentence, there!)
The diary format is reminiscent of Bridget Jones, but it's not the same at all, and so funny that I immediately bought the next five books in the series!

Smagi knyga.

I don’t read many ‘chick lit’ books, in fact I think I only bought this one because it was on offer for 99p. When I was looking for my next book I often skimmed over it. But after one too many crime books I wanted ‘fluffy’ and light hearted. Got to say I REALLY enjoyed this book and I’m even looking at getting the 6 book box set now. I need to know what happens next!!

Je me suis régalée ! J’ai rit, j’ai eu ma larme à l’œil, je me suis énervée, je me suis reconnue…

Bisous

I finally got Amazon Unlimited and this one was in Weekly Deals. I thought why not go out of my usual reading?

It was difficult to get into and at the beginning I had no idea who anyone was. I understand it was a diary but it would've been nice to have a quick introductory about all the characters (Alex - Childhood friend for example, cause for I was confused for a while).

Regarding to the actual story, it was nice to read a book set in England as I'm studying there and it seems that this story is relatable to people who live there. Although the actual plot was slightly slow and towards the middle very predictable.

There was a trip to Dubai which I was very excited about cause I thought yaay representation for Middle Easterns like myself. I thought it was very poorly done and stereotypical. For example, why would you set the holiday in Ramadhan? Why must it be a bad experience? There was a bit about wanting to go swimming but not finding anything other than burkinis. As someone who has annual trips to Dubai, I found it a bit ridiculous.

Anyway, I have given it two stars because to a certain extent it was entertaining.

The much discussed topic of motherhood presented in a charming and humorous platter!
Witty & humorous, with a dash of romance added to the mix. A heartwarming but realistic romantic comedy which peels the layers of perfect motherhood and gives a peek into the daily life of a middle class mother, where sometimes money is short and trying to balance motherhood while aiming to get back the perfect body seem to collide at every turn. It's also a story about understanding relationships and maturing from heartbreaks to realize one's self worth. And, lastly the beautiful but not so perfect bond between a mother and her baby.
Also the diary style of narration is catchy uplifts the content of the story from many of its predecessors.
Loved it.Would definitely recommend this author.

I picked this book because it was free on Amazon and I needed a quick read for a long wait at the hospital (don't worry I'm fine. Just waiting for a friend to have a procedure done. She's fine too).

I had mixed feelings throughout reading this novel and almost put it down a few times for the overtly obvious happily-ever-after and cliches that are in the book. Her sister is an irresponsible young mother, her mother is over-the-top loud, and obnoxious, and she's the responsible older sister. I do wish the ending was a bit better since Jules waits for a man to rescue her instead of find it herself then finding him. Don't get me wrong I like that she ends with him, but I was hoping that she would find her own identity first since most of the book she's doing a lot of search for herself and who she is. I wanted more from it.

I loved that the book is told differently--entire through her diary entries which sometimes was frustrating since the Jules was purposefully not saying things to her diary so she could remain in a state of denial. But the book is a nice quick read and contains numerous hilarious moments. I'm not sure yet if I want to read the remaining books in the series or not especially since the author jumped into the book to congratulate me as the reader for making it halfway...why? why would she disrupt my reading? That was one of the moments I almost put the book down. I hate when authors do that...just let me enjoy your book baby.

I also felt that this book is in the middle of a series or the second book of a series. I just felt like I was missing something. Later, I found out that there's a prequel when we find out about Juliette and Nick's courtship or dating.

I did enjoy Juliette's quirky family and their antics cracked me up. Alex's seriousness and his dry humor added to the hilarity of the book. Aspects of the book had a very Bridget Jones feel to it since you never know what type of hilarious trouble the female character will get into.

I just love the Bad Mother books - just got Detox to read. (hoping there will be some more written soon)

This is the second in the series -
1. Pregnancy (though Amazon has this as no.4 it is a prequel to the series so I'm putting at no.1)
2. Diary
3. Detox
4. Holiday (I read this first so I'm all out of sequence anyway)

This is all about family with Juliette as the main character. The family she grew up with, the family she wanted with Nick father of her child Daisy, and the full circle she goes when the family she wanted with Nick disintegrates due to him being an idiot.

I loved her family. Her Mum who still acts like a teenager but is there for her when she needs her. Her Dad who gets emotional over everything. Her sisters, one who is quite sensible and one is a teenage single mother and complete nutter.
I disliked her friend Sadie (for reasons that will become apparent should you read this), her Fiance Nick and his mother Helen who butts into their relationship way too often.

I found the writing style very easy to read.............often too easy (still catching up on the sleep) I wouldn't say this was hilarious but I giggled in places and got sad in others. It was slightly reminiscent of Bridget Jone's Diary but only because it was a diary and there were men in it - I thought this was much better and more relatable (to me anyway).

P.S. I disliked the way other reviewers have attacked the author for making a few grammar errors - it's a diary, who the hell grammar-checks their diary!!!! Oh and to the ones who thought it was a bit OTT, what a dull life you must have led!

Many many thanks to Suzy for gifting me this e-book.

Suzy K. Quinn has somewhat confounded me with this book! There are some holes to pick in both this book and the free Novella linked in the end of the book. There are some massive inaccuracies littered throughout both titles. The story line has an air of predictability about it, and some of the finishing is lacking. It should be one of those books that you read the first few pages of, think "tripe" and never pick up again. Yet, it absolutely is not! It's one that you keep going back to. Despite everything, you want to know what's going to happen. The smug git in you want's to know whether you're you right? IS he doing what you think he is? Is she feeling what you think she is? I think that a degree of believability is achieved through the factual inaccuracies. We've come to expect perfect research and factual accuracy from everything around us, yet as individuals we often talk complete and utter b******s. I suspect this is what the book does well, and why we keep on going back to it . . . I'm almost certain that this is why I'm on amazon to purchase the sequel right now! This book is one of those guilty pleasures that you read on the train, at lunch time, in the bathtub, and before you go to sleep, but rarely confess to enjoying while sober.

Bad mother’s dagboeken - Suzy K. Quinn
**recensie**
