Poptropica #2

La expedición secreta

Rate this book
Based on a concept by New York Times bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney comes Poptropica, a brand-new graphic-novel series by Mitch Krpata and Kory Merritt that takes readers on an adventure beyond the incredibly popular online role-playing world. In book two, The Lost Expedition, Oliver, Mya, and Jorge continue their search for home, with a few hilarious stops along the way. As the friends set sail for new sights, they find the evil Octavian is still hot on their trail, and he’s determined to get his hands on their magical map. To make matters worse, a mysterious organization is keen on expelling the three friends from Poptropica. As the pals travel, they find that each island is filled with its own unique brand of peril, and the mystery surrounding the map and Poptropica itself begins to unfold. Will our trio be able to once again outfox Octavian and discover the identity of this secret society?

Presented in vivid full-color comic book illustrations, The Lost Expedition is perfect for kids who love a sense of adventure while learning about history in a fun way. Book one in the series, The Mystery of the Map, received incredible praise. KirkusReviews said, “Bright, animated colors and zippy cartoonlike action make for an easily accessible first offering that provides just enough exposition to hook young readers and keep them seeking out subsequent adventures. A peppily paced adventure yarn sure to delight fans of the franchise, both old and new.” And Booklist raved, “Based on the online role-playing game developed by the ever-popular Jeff Kinney, this new adventure comic series gets off to a flying start . . . The lively art mirrors that on the website, featuring bold, colorful panels and characters with giant heads and expressive eyes. Fans of the online game will delight in reading a story about one of Poptropica’s many islands, and newcomers will have no trouble falling into this adventure.”

Poptropica -Expeditia disparuta. Volumul 2
Editura Arthur, colectia miniGrafic, 2018

Am continuat aventura Myei alaturi de Oluver si Jorge, dar parca nu au fost emotiile din prima parte. Cu toate astea, the show must go on :))
Cei trei sunt urmati de Octavian si pe taramul Amazoanelor si pe taramul polar al Poptropicii.

In this book the three friends start to piece things together and the plot starts to make sense. This book takes place in three new locations and there is a big twist at the end.

The long awaited (yes, I know it has only been 5 months, but that is a long time if you want a sequel) second book in this series is here! And I have to say that I enjoyed myself as much, if not more than the previous book.

We find out more about Poptropica, though I still have many, many questions about this place. But we do find out more, and also about the people with the tattoos. Of course not everything is revealed, but I do like how they are giving us glimpses behind the curtain of questions. :P

The kids are still on the road to finding their way home, they are also still figuring out the map (that map sure has a will of its own), and in the meantime they also have to dodge, escape, and survive.

Mya is still my favourite character, if anything she is getting more awesome with each book. She was already kick-ass in the previous book, but she shows guts, bravery, strength even more in this book. I especially liked that one scene were she smacks a weapon out of a "villain's" hands with a paddle while on a sled and going at high speed. Go girl go!

Jorge, who was my least favourite in the previous book, definitely went through a big improvement. He still did some annoying things, but I do have to say that I liked him more.

Octavian is still the villain, and he plays that role perfectly. He is creepy, scary, and doesn't shy away from anything to get his hands on the map.

We also meet several new characters, and visit new places.

The twist at the end with who was the tattooed one on the ship? Well, I didn't see it coming. That person was just so nice and friendly. Unlike some other characters on the ship.

The ending. Argh, that cliffhanger. It seems that this series loves doing that. I can't wait for the next book, no clue when it is coming out, but I do hope soon as I am dying to see what will happen.

The art is really nice, I am now totally used to it (I needed a bit of an adjusting time in the first book).

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. Tropical adventures, an icy ship, hungry polar bears, and much much more!

'The Lost Expedition (Poptropica #2)' by Mitch Krpata with art by Kory Merritt continues the adventures from the first volume.

Oliver, Mya and Jorge are still on the run from Octavian. They just want to get home, he just wants the map they have. They try to use the map to get home and find themselves on an island of Amazons, in Shakespeare's England, buying fruit from William Gunn on Treasure Island, and finally to the heart of the story in the frozen Antarctic. They escape a polar bear only to find themselves amidst a group of explorers on a boat that is frozen in the ice. Will they be safe here or is there lurking danger? Can they get home? And what does the name Poptropica even mean?

It's a fun young reader series. The travels seem to be taking them through history and literature. The Treasure Island reference is vague, but it's there. I liked the first book in the series a bit better, but this was a fun read.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from ABRAMS Kids, Amulet Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

The good news: I didn't pay for it (got an Uncorrected Proof from the publisher at a conference)- what dreck. Kirkus Reviews is out of its mind on this one. The premise is amusing -three friends and a magic map that sends them to different times and places- but the friends are Disney caricatures (the smart girl leading the athletic guy who's a little dumb, and the lazy guy who wants to eat beef jerky) and the villain following (and some sort of master puppeteer whose followers have tattoos and walkie talkies) that seems to steal from Lemony Snicket and Maze Runner, and ends with them on a space ship.... (sorry) but doesn't really end because your parents need to buy the next book and maybe the companion map.

This was my first encounter with the Poptropica universe. Since I did not really know the characters or the premise, I found it quite difficult to follow the story, but I do have the vague impression that reading the first book would not have made a big difference anyway. The action is all over the place literally and strange characters appear out of nowhere and have little to no importance to the plot. Very basic characters and rather caricatures (we had to have a plumpy character obsesses with food didn't we and the female heroine who saves the day). I basically have no idea why this book is a New York Times best seller but I ve long learnt that bestsellers are not necessarily good, fun or engaging.

I had the same issue here as with Mystery of the Map, where it's a Poptropica story in the way the characters are designed, but that's about it. I did like that this made more reference to the different islands, but the story itself isn't very well written and one of the characters only exists to make fatphobic jokes.

A fun short read. This is book 2 in the series. This time Oliver, Jorge, and Mya get to visit the Amazons where they get confused for Gorgons, but ultimately end up in the frozen North. Boy is it cold. But Octavian still wants the map. And now there are these weird people with tattoos calling them prisoners, and chasing them down. The adventure continues in book 3, and so should you.

Aia e…

Ne vom întâlni totuși cu John Franklin, comandantul expediției.

Tot e ceva…

This was a read-aloud with my 7-year-old, and I didn’t love it. Maybe because we hadn’t read the first in the series, so we were missing some key plot points? Or maybe not. It wasn’t awful, but it didn’t make me want to explore any more of the series.

This was fun sequel that kept me guessing until the very end. The end of the book was a cliffhanger that entices me to read the next one.

Even more questions. The series starts to lose its magic. Just like Lost the TV series.

I'll be honest - this felt a lot more like a two to me than a three star graphic novel, but I am bumping it up because I do like the concept, the characters, and I was just super excited about this series when I heard it was based off an idea by Jeff Kinney (author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid).

The Lost Expedition is. . .serviceable. . .at best. I think it's one of those comics it would be easier to like if you weren't an avid comic book / graphic novel reader, which unfortunately in this case I am. There's just nothing that wonderful about The Lost Expedition.

Even though it's aimed at the younger crowd (middle school readers) I can't imagine they would find this that entertaining either. I was hoping with Poptropica #2 the authors would find their stride, but it seems like they have lost momentum. I'll pick up Poptropica #3 if it's convenient, but I wouldn't go out of my way to read it.

It's a fun book, but far too short for all my unanswered questions. I liked how, though a kids book, it went fairly deep into themes of leadership, responsibilty and loyalty to your beliefs in a cause. As the characters devolped I like how Jorge is still the funny goof ball, as in the original comics (Which my brother and I loved), but I was a little surprised that Mya took on more of the role of leader, in the comics it's just Jorge and Oliver, and Oliver is more the leader. Not that it's a bad change, I do like getting to know Mya more. Anyway how long til the next book? I'm not sure I'll make it!!

This is book 2 in the new graphic novel series Poptropica. There is a lot of adventure and history. Kids will have a lot of fun reading this and rooting for Oliver, Mya, and Jorge to outsmart the evil Octavian. The illustrations are great! This comic book is for ages 8-12. I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.

My middle school students are going to love The Lost Expedition. The antics of the main characters are a hoot. This is a fun read.
Thanks to Goodreads First Reads for a copy of The Lost Expedition.
