I remember growing up always wondering when the world would come to an end. The wonder often turned to fear, especially when I was home alone and thinking everyone got raptured but me. The ideas of a secret rapture and dispensational thinking may not mean much to most people, but it is the commanding view of our American Christianity today. Greg Laurie is no different here, in that he propagates the same view that you might find on one of those left behind books or films.

Most of the book was like watching a dog chase its tail as we were told on one page that we shouldn’t speculate beyond what Scripture teaches and on another page we are being told how God represents America and Magog Russia. There is nothing new here in terms of Biblical prophecy or interpretation that you would not have already read from Harold Camping or Tim LaHaye on these subjects. Once you escape this understanding of the end times, you really start to see how weird it truly is.

Without getting into the history of John Darby or C.I. Scofield, it is worth simply pointing out that this interpretation of Scripture and the end times was effectively non-existent before the 1840’s. And yet it has dominated the cultural Christian interpretation of the last days. Scripture does speak about these things and it is clearer than what most of these interpreters make of it with all the imagery of modern day phenomena. As one person once put it, this is what happens when your theology comes from the newspapers (Or Facebook and X today) and not from the Bible.

Laurie admits that every generation in recent history has thought theirs would be the final one. Nonetheless, he thinks the current signs indicate we “may be” very close to the Lord's return. (10) He identifies the typical signs of wars, natural calamities, false teaching in the church, establishment of the nation of Israel, etc. He advocates a timeline of rapture, attack on Israel, emergence of Antichrist, tribulation, Armageddon, etc. He takes us through John's visions in Revelation giving his suggestions as to the participants and the events.

As with any book on prophecy, I am picky about how Scripture is used. One of the verses Laurie says indicates Christians will be removed in the rapture before the tribulation is 1 Thess. 5:9. (47) Laurie takes the wrath we won't suffer as being in the tribulation. The next verse, however, clearly indicates that Paul was writing about the wrath of God's judgment on sin that Jesus suffered for believers through His death. I think this is an example of believing an idea and then finding verses to support it.

Christians who are well read on prophecy will not find much new on the topic in this book. The strength of this book, I think, is Laurie's teaching that Christ's eminent return should cause us to want to live a more godly life, one with integrity and purity. (27, 39) To help Christians in this endeavor, Laurie gives good teaching on hot topics including good answers to those who oppose Christian beliefs. He writes about angels and demons, heaven and hell, and judgment, for example.

I recommend this book to Christians who are not looking for new ideas in prophecy as much as desiring to be encouraged to live God pleasing lives as we look for the Lord's return. This is an updated edition of the book released in 2010.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Today is Sunday, Aug. 25th, 2024 and at church this morning, Harvest where the Pastor is Greg who is also the author of this book; in his sermon he's talking on controversial things; a lot of what he was saying this morning is in this book. Lol
If you call yourself a Christian then you believe every single word that is in the Bible and that means the whole Bible; not just what you want or accept. This is a great book that talks about some controversial topics like, "how can a loving GOD send people to hell" and the Rapture of Christ church; among other important topics.
This book was free on Audible when I added it to my library but I don’t know if it still is; either way you get this book, it is an excellent read/listen.

This book is for Christian believers - not for those looking to learn about Christian faith. There are lots of excerpts from Scripture that you may not fully understand unless you have read the Bible. I didn't particularly like the writing style, it went back and forth from formal to informal. The overall messages were clear but how they were written made me feel like I was being judged reading this book. Maybe it was just how I was reading it but overall I didn't enjoy this book that much.

I am certain that many people over the years have thrown some complicated questions at Pastor Greg Laurie. Here, he answers those questions with his usual attention to research and his gift for speaking on the level of his listeners. This would be the perfect time to order this book and read through its pages.

I have paid a certain amount of attention to Greg Laurie for about seven years, ever since my church announced that his evangelical crusade was coming to my city and I went. This book reinforced my previously vague sense that Laurie is not a theologian and not a rigorous thinker. There isn't very much information I learned about the end times that I didn't already know; and Laurie occasionally makes dubious statements such as claiming that because they all appeared male in the Bible, angels are all male. (Please! Sexes are for humans; and of course if the angels displayed male appearances, they did because men in those societies probably wouldn't have listened to anything said by female-appearing angels.)

Nevertheless, I am keeping the book on my shelf, because his teachings know what's most important. I did pick up a few pithy or otherwise well-stated remarks that aided my understanding of Biblical truths.

Every person who believes in Christ needs to read this book! Every person who is skeptical needs to read this book! Every unbeliever needs to read this book! We are in these times there isn't a doubt in my mind. The signs are everywhere and more since this book was published. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son John 3:16. God loves us no matter what we do or have done His love is there for us, we just need to accept it and Him. Jesus is waiting for the last person to believe, could it be you He's waiting on?

Thought provoking

Greg Laurie reminds us of the fragility of life and the forever of eternity. He offers effective descriptions of our hope and God’s love and promise to us. This book is a great reminder and a powerful inspiration on what it means to live heaven ready.

Although I find the topic interesting, I give this book 2-3 stars. He repeats himself many times. Also the editors of this book could have paid more attention as I found many errors in the typing.

Some great stuff in here but also a little too surface level at times for those who grew up in the church.
