Into the Sunrise: Cycling the World, Part Two: Sydney to Mori

Rate this book
In Part Two of Chris Pountney’s attempt to cycle around the world, a disaster in the Pacific Ocean soon forces a drastic change of plans. Can he find a way to recover from the setback and complete his mission to return to the little Chinese town of Mori, and in so doing complete a full circumnavigation of the planet using only his bicycle and boats?

Join Chris and his girlfriend Dea as they travel across four continents and more than thirty countries in the second part of this epic tale of adventure, romance, and outright silliness. A hell of a lot of things happen as they make their way back towards China, but will there be a happy ending? Will the odd sculpture in Mori be reached without the aid of motor vehicles? You’ll have to read the book and find out, it’s not going to be revealed in the Amazon description.

A journey completed.

I've read many cycling journals of cyclists making their dreams into reality. I had my own dream, albeit a little less dramatic, of riding across America an my recumbent trike. I read Chris's first book prior to my attempt and then I read this, his second book, after completing my own journey on June 4, 2018. I could feel the emotions he wrote about, as memories of my own journey came flooding back after only a few months since my finish. I enjoyed both books immensely.

A great second part to the story

Having read part 1 of the story, I was keen to continue my armchair journey. Following Chris and Dea as they finished the circumnavigation of the world. It didn't disappoint. Another good cycle travel book. Looking forward to a future part 3 documenting their onward journey.

Perseverance and integrity

I thoroughly enjoyed this book (and also the first). Chris and Dea's ability to put discomfort to one side amazed me, especially through the last icy weeks cycling in China. I found it hard to put down; always wondering what the next stage would bring. Chris's determination to use only boats and his, generally decrepit, bike was commendable.

Second book chronicles Pountney's quirky attempt to cycle around the world by boat and bike ONLY! Well, that doesn't come close to telling the complete story. Endearing, funny, absorbing...a thorough joy to read.

Entertaining

Written with a lightness of touch and good humour. It demonstrates what you can achieve with single mindedness and determination.

Loved it just as much as the first book. Thoroughly entertaining and also was shocked that you’d met someone from Guernsey (I’m from there!) - made my day (doesn’t take much 🤣)

Onward

Maybe I 'm just getting used to his style, but I like this book better than the first one. I am also getting a feeling for the characters.

INSPIRATION INCORPORATED!

This amazing couple have given encouragement to so many fence-sitting individuals that they deserve medals. Chris's geekily fussy way of circumnavigating the earth using only bike and boat is softened by Dea's sensible, calm persona making a fascinating rendition of a wonderful achievement. People they meet and the conditions those people endure provide the best way for readers to learn how this beautiful planet rolls on at this moment, not some outdated account of years gone by. An incredible journey backed by an up to date well written blog, both a pleasure to read.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as his first, the main reason was a lot of what he does he as done before or very similar. The best parts are at the beginning particularly travelling across Canada with a eclectic Oriental lady. The rest does not feel like a adventure more a retread. I look forward to his next book in pastures new and hope he takes more care ( ie wild life and servicing his bike before it disintegrates under him. ) I also hope his mum as made a Hugh improvement with her health.

I finished the first book and immediately started the second. I really enjoyed both books but art times the authors gushing over "the one" became a bit much. Also I want to hear and see the countries and at times I thought there were too many games in too much detail and not enough countryside.
But having said that the last part of the book read like a thriller. It was a page turner like few other books. After I finished I actually had to go back and reread the last section because I was sure ~I missed some vital info because I wanted to know what happened.
Looking forward to book 3.

More of the same :)

This second book reads like the journal of a travel we are taking part to, it feels authentic and gets us to contemplate the small parts of places they visit.

This time there are 2 main characters, Chris and Dea, plus tons of new people they meet along the way. I got a bit irritated at times by the numerous "hidden" compliments addressed to Dea all along the book (choose your audience man...), though maybe that's just me. All in all this is essentially the continuation of the first part: the same funny and light hearted style, the same focus on interesting encounters, the same desire to live fulfilling a life.

As a beginner long distance cyclist, I was happy to observe through their story the way they chose to do their tour, which helped me get started and make my own first choices.

Great story, looking forward to the 3rd tome :)

After reading the first book, which I could hardly put down, I had to go straight onto this one. I'm amazed at the determination and resilience shown as Chris and Dea complete their around the world journey on bicycles!

I barely stopped to make dinner and haven't watched TV in days because I kept wanting to read on and find out what happens next. Chris writes with such honesty, that I had to fight back the urge to judge, (Dude you seemed to take crappy care of your bike, I wanted to say) but this is not my story, and I got the impression that he has a bit of Over-focused ADD going on.

However, to his credit, he turns it into a good thing with a real goal. Which he completes with Dea at his side. I seriously admire this! I loved reading about this journey and felt like I was taken along for a ride. Now I shall follow the blog and find out what they are up to next.

I feel like I held my breath throughout the last half hour of reading this book. What a crazy roller coaster ride!
While reading Chris’ book, I kept wishing I had gone on a cycling trip like this when I was younger. Then I’d get to certain spots and think, that’s insane, I’d never be able to do that.
I am really looking forward to reading his next book. It’s on my Kindle right now, so as soon as I finish my review, I’m going to start.
Here I go!

Chris and Dea
What a remarkable pair of books and a most remarkable journey. Having done some long-distance cycling myself in my younger years, I can appreciate your trip although somehow being able to surmount all the problems you faced is a truly incredible. I congratulate you both, on the trip as well as the two books. I truly look forward to reading about your next journey.

Funny, endearing and a celebration of humanity.

A great cycling travel book. Along with the first book I highly recommend. I've read dozens of cycling travel books and enjoyed these the most!

This is bike touring as I remember it. There's a lot of flat tires. And broken bike parts. And wrong turns. And it's absolutely magical, especially when you're doing it with the right person. This is a funny, very human story of travel which succeeds in capturing the wonder and misery of living on two wheels on the road.

Just finished, what a brilliant book, love the guys wit and I was there with him as he climbed mountains passed through deserts gazed in awe at the beauty of nature and finally realised his dream and found love along the way. Would highly recommend part 1 &2 and can't wait for 3.

Having read Part One, I looked forward to and enjoyed reading Part Two. It didn’t disappoint. It restores faith in humanity. With perseverance it also illustrates what is possible to achieve, even with language barriers.

A tale of vision, guts and determination

This is an inspirational book about a quest to travel around the world by boat and by bicycle. It is laced with indomitable human spirit, kindness, endeavour and utter determination and maybe even a bit of craziness too. Above all it is an easy read, which will continually fire your imagination. Buy it, you won't regret it.

I was really enjoying it until right near the end when he implies that God, or the Universe, or the Fates or whatever, deliberately put an amoeba in his girlfriend's eye (almost costing her her eyesight and causing untold distress) just so he could carry on cycling to China. Don't believe me?

"There is surely some truth to the idea that everything happens for a reason , and while it had taken a while to discern any positives from Dea’s horrible eye infection in the Pacific Ocean , in causing us to abandon our plan of cycling the Americas together , in forcing us to head east for Mori sooner , it might just have been the most important single event in bringing us here , just in time , to the brink of success . "

Everything happens for a reason. Her eye infection happened for a reason.

Great read!

As a cyclist and someone has done a little bit of travelling, I really enjoyed reading Chris and Dea's adventures in the first 2 books. Chris's writing really takes you on the ride with them and takes you to places I may never see. Really looking forward to the third book!

Travel books are rarely this much fun. Chris Pountney takes you round the world on his bike, and along the way, you’ll meet an amazing array of strangers who become friends and help restore your faith in the human race. Highly recommended.
