Dead Edge is a political thriller. It is the second in a series and I was informed it could be read as a stand-alone. Whilst I agree that the storyline has no link to the previous book so from that angle it can be read without reading the first one, I found that I didn’t have a connection to the main character Cooper, nor his relationships with his wife, daughter, or even his comrade Rosedale.

The book is set between the USA, Turkey and Burkina Faso and opens with a bang – Literally. There are two explosions generated at the same time in two different cities. The first is in an airport in Memphis the second in Washington DC. There are also reports of several shootings too.

Tensions are high and it’s up to the government to get answers, including US President Woods, the FBI, and the CIA. They need to know what, why and who is responsible and bring them to justice, by any means necessary.

Ex-Military man Cooper, Maddie (his wife) and Rosedale are tasked with finding the killers in some secret mission. However, Cooper is addicted to prescription painkillers that seem to be clouding his judgement, but keeping his addiction secret he sets out on the mission. Will they succeed before there are more explosions on US soil?

It took me a long time to read this book, the book information states that it has 384 pages, actually, it has 542, it is a big book. There was a lot of back and forth between President Woods, the CIA, and Cooper and his team. I’ll be honest at times I did get a little confused as to what was going on and also after the initial opening scene, which was tense, everything seemed to calm down for a long time and I did struggle with the slower pace as I was expecting a fast-paced action thriller.

Whilst it might sound like I didn’t enjoy the book, the opposite is actually true. I did enjoy the intense storyline, once it got going, it felt so real in terms of politicians lying to the public about what was actually happening in their country, and they were dealing with the terrorists in secret. Also, the President was undermined a lot of the time by outside agencies, especially the CIA.

If you like political books then I think you will love this book. It is well-written, takes you on a complete adventure and covers some hard-hitting issues. It is one of those books that I would pick up, say to myself I’ll just read for 20 mins, then suddenly realise an hour had passed as I had become so engrossed.

On a side note, each chapter is given a chess move too, I don’t play chess so this was really lost on me – Sorry.

Dead Edge by Jack Ford... oh wow, oh wow, oh wow! This contemporary political thriller continues to follow Thomas J Cooper in his second adventure. It can be read as a stand-alone but I recommend reading book one, The Killing Grounds, first.
This is an absolutely cracking first rate thriller that focuses on protecting America's homeland "by any means necessary." A complex and well thought out plotline embroils the reader in terrorism and counter terrorism whilst not rocking the political boat. Politicians do what they have to do to keep America safe. They tell the public what they want to hear but not necessarily the truth.
Once again the reader meets the knights in shining armour in the form of Coop and his team. They remind me of the three musketeers as they fight for life, liberty and truth. Their hearts are in the right place even if at times they go off piste. They are "all for one and one for all."
You cannot see what the characters see and do what the characters do, without being affected. The readers witnesses the private battle with prescription drugs in the hope of blotting out events from eight years earlier. Guilt threatens to sink a character.
The reader sees the brutality of the terrorists. The lengths they will stoop to in order to pursue their beliefs. It's really quite frightening.
Dead Edge had me gripped from the start. I am loving this series and have a lot of time and respect for Coop with his sense of duty, loyalty and love.
The ending is fabulous. My jaw literally dropped. I am perfectly poised for book three. Please write quickly Jack Ford!
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

Oh dear, where do I start? This was so hard to read and enjoy and I almost threw it against the wall so many times. Just didn’t work for me on any level. Great characters? No. Clever plot? Oh, my Goodness no. Pace and intelligence? No. Seriously, NO.
Probably essential to read the first book, but (trust me), I would rather not. Anyway, damaged operative on addictive pills (yawn) gets involved in a scenarios where a senior member of the US administration is manipulating his position with regard to negotiations with the bad guys and only our drug addled hero (?), his wife and a guy that he doesn’t seem to get on with can do anything about it.
Oh, and there are secrets and relationships from the first book...that also really didn’t work.
I actually dont enjoy being so negative about a book but I honestly struggle to find any element that worked for me or I enjoyed. I actually kept dropping this to read other things. I actually switched to “Buried in Black” (JT Patten) which was a mistake as it also featured a “damaged” operative. I mention it because Buried in Black worked and highlighted just how much this one didn’t.
So frustrating and....just not great.

This moves along at a rapid pace and keeps you turning the pages. The editing isn't great though - points of view flip-flop within chapters without any breaks and there a couple of ugly errors a basic copy edit should have found. All-in-all though, a good read.

This was a brilliant continuation to the first book, once again involving many grey characters, adventures, secrets, cover-ups and lies. Following Tom Cooper, the ex-navy now investigator as a new and bizarre job isn't quite as it seems.
I love the whole cast of characters and found family feel, although Cooper is a walking disaster and beyond frustrating.
Great read and I'm excited for the next one!

A fast paced thriller with some very modern elements (namely terrorism and interweaving of real terrorist groups and attacks, which makes it seem very realistic). I was hooked from the very first page and the action didn't slow down from there. The narrative flicks about between different places and situations, which I'm not always a fan of but I felt it worked really well here and added to the tension and pace of the plot.

A high octane, fast paced thriller that grabs you from the start. Good characterisation and a great storyline. Enjoyed every minute of it.
