As a child in rural Oregon, Kate Elliott made up stories because she longed to escape to a world of lurid adventure fiction. She now writes fantasy, steampunk, and science fiction, often with a romantic edge. She currently lives in Hawaii, where she paddles outrigger canoes and spoils her schnauzer.

Another great read in the Magic The Gathering short stories collection, that's available to read in 8 parts from their website.

Set 18 years after the events of the 'Fate Reforged' expansion from the 'Khans of Tarkir' story block, Yasova (formerly Yasova Dragonclaw) leads her grand daughters, Baishya and Naiva, and a hunting party across the wilderness after Baishya is visited by a vision telling her the very beginnings of Ugin the Spirit Dragon and Nicol Bolas. Things take a turn when their journey is interrupted by Tae Jin, a member of the Ojutai clan, with a special message for Yasova - more of Ugin's and Nicol's early days on Dominaria, which he retells along the way.

Told in the style of the Arabian Nights, a story within a story, we get to see the origins of both Ugin and Nicol Bolas, their sibling rivalry, and when they both sparked becoming the first Planeswalkers.

As with the previous story in the series, 'Return To Dominaria', there is just a single author on writing duties, a different author this time - Kate Elliott, and it works wonders once again. The story feels more structured and flows together instead of feeling broken down into separate episodes. I was so engrossed in the story as a whole, both enjoying the 'current' storyline of Yasova and her grand daughters travelling to Ugin's grave, as well as the 'flashbacks' to the Elder Dragons' past, it's one of the best Magic Stories yet.

Looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.

I really enjoyed this story-line, which is a combination of two past stories, the older one being told within the other. We learn in this story much more of the history of the original Elder Dragons of Dominaria, what they were like (presumably), and the story of two brothers (at least from one viewpoint). I continue to appreciate the decision to go with one author to tell these stories.

Nicol Bolas was already an incredible character, but this completely changed my understanding of him. That being said, I think this story did even more for Ugin than Bolas. I didn't care much for Ugin in the Zendikar block, and I hadn't seen him in anything else. This story very strongly convinced me of why Ugin is great. Next up on the chopping block is The Gathering Storm!

The story for Magic 2019 takes us on a detour to Nicol Bolas's past, and it tells a generally compelling story along the way. The backstory of Nicol and his twin Ugin adds a lot of depth to both their individual characters as well as the current main narrative. Meanwhile we get a lot of interesting lore regarding their Elder Dragon siblings and the early days of Dominaria.

A few plot points feel glossed over, primarily the war Bolas waged against some of his siblings. While the story left me wanting more, it's easy to see how that particular storyline could have snowballed into a whole novel of its own.

In the end this was a fairly well written, engaging diversion from Magic's narrative arc, and one that I suspect will be quite valuable in the long run.
