When the past comes calling, no one wants to answer. It's tempting to forget about it altogether and hope it will go away.
The line between finding and losing yourself is often a slippery slope. One misstep could slide you into places you never intended on going. Jesse discovered this in what he thought was only him putting himself up for the winter. It evolved into something much more - a journey into his past. And during it, he learned the best way in healing old wounds is to give them air. Jesse's ran so deep he forgot not only his past, but his present, and future. Only the patient love of his family could tackle him, tie him up, and bring him back to them. And like the wayward son, sometimes the only way we allow other people to help us is when we have no idea of who they are.
Time might not heal all wounds, but it does sometimes help in managing them.
Prodigal native Oklahoman L. L. Ward takes you for a wild ride beginning in the early 1800s and brings you on home to present-day through the course of this ongoing ALL ROADS LEAD HOME series.
All Roads Lead Home: Book Two: Forgetting There : L. L. Ward
The second book in this series. The listener is taken back into the old west. Things at the Flying M are in a weary mess. Jessie returned, died, and Amanda arrives with their son. From there cattle are disappearing, people claim the property doesn't belong to them, and more. The twists and turns in this slow moving story keep the listener on edge trying to find out what will happen next, who is who, and who is good and evil. The ending leaves you hanging, so I assume and hope for another book.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. J Rodney Turner has a slow drawl, I speed it up on my Kindle to suit my tastes.
"I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator."
I have now read all three books in two days and was in too much of a hurry to get on to book three, so I didn't take the time to review this one. That should tell you how much I'm enjoying the series. And it is definitely a series, so if you don't like cliffhangers...
The writing kept me completely immersed in the lives of Jesse and the others at "the M". They are all like most of us, in that they are goodhearted, but dealing with their pasts, their present and their futures; doing so in ways that are colored by humor, faith, loyalty, family values and their own unique character flaws. Did I mention doubts? No, but there are some of those, as well.
The author has a way of letting you see deep inside each character, with a lot of wisdom thrown in, if you seek it. As I read, I began to see the faces of the characters change into those of my family and friends, most no longer with us.
I enjoyed continuing reading this series and following along cowboy Jesse's adventure. It's a different kind of book taking you to another time, where life flows differently. I liked the message it hold when you read closely as well as the entertaining factor.
I am amazed how this book was published in 2015 because it feels like from another century. Good job on that.
One thing that I found slightly irritating was how fast decisions where made. Characters introduced in the morning and at night people moved in, out and where engaged while in between lots of coffee drinking took place. It felt a bit unbelievable at times.
I would give this book 3,5 stars. It fell a bit short compared to the first one. However I will continue reading.
When I started reading this story, just thought it was another about a ranch and the people who run it. It definitely turned out to be a very long book for me . I wanted a better ending!
I loved Book one "Getting There" in Audiobook form. I can enjoy them just about anywhere and any time. I wanted to know what happened so much from the cliffhanger in book one that I got the Kindle version for Book two. It took me too long to read it, but I still enjoyed the story. I will definitely get this in Audio when it comes out. The past and present tenses used and the language really make it feel like you are back on the 'M' ranch as an observer. It wasn't as noticeable(tense wise) in the audio form, but the flavor of that time was present in both versions. Surprises around every corner and am looking forward to the rest of the series.!
