Manga | Fantasy | Slice of Life

Somali and the Forest Spirit, Vol. 5 we get more backstory, offering a more detailed look at how Somali and the Golem first met. Through extended flashbacks, we see that the Golem initially tried multiple times to leave Somali behind. Despite his attempts to desert her, she stubbornly follows him, repeatedly calling him “Father,” until he can no longer ignore his responsibility toward her. This volume makes it clear that their journey began out of reluctant care and growing attachment.

The Golem’s motivation is especially heartbreaking here, he doesn’t plan to stay with Somali forever. Instead he hopes to find someone else who can care for her (Preferably human) because his body is slowly deteriorating. This internal conflict adds a layer of urgency to their travels and reinforces the central theme of impermanence that runs throughout the series.

We also learn the origin of Somali’s name. A cat-like creature called a Komidori Somali discovers her first, and the Golem names her after it. Interestingly, depending on translations, her name appears as either “Somari” or “Somali,” which was a detail I noticed while reading.

Somali gifts the Golem which is another moment that symbolizes her bond with him.

The volume ends on a sad, anxiety-inducing cliffhanger that left me genuinely worried about the Golem’s fate. Thankfully, a bonus extra chapter helps soften the emotional blow with a lighter flashback of Somali and the Golem shopping together, reminding readers of the warmth and tenderness at the heart of their relationship.

I can't get enough of the illustrations and comforting characters! The backstory on how somari met the forest guardian was so cute but also a little heartbreaking. Can't wait for the final volume ✨️

What a majestic love story between father and chlld! Simply astounding and astonishing in every word! That storyline seems cliché if you have read a lot of mangas. It can seem repetitive or boring if you have read similar plotlines. However, the parent-child relationship is clearly communicated to the readers. I guess that is the reason why I stick reading this manga up to volume 5 📖😁.
