Fighting Talk: A Stanton brothers thriller

Rate this book
Eric Stanton is used to getting the dirty end of the stick. So, he’s not entirely convinced when his loan-shark boss tells him he's got an easy job for him to do. His boss assures him it’s the kind of task that requires “somebody with a light touch”. All Eric needs to do is visit his boss’ favourite client and ask why she’s fallen behind with her payments.

Easy, right?

Wrong.

All it takes is one visit to send the Stanton brothers on a crazy journey through derelict buildings filled with junkies and drug dealers, rough pubs, and abandoned farms, as they attempt to right some wrongs and bring down a dog-fighting syndicate. It all starts with a bit of fighting talk, but it’s going to end with blood and broken bones.

Fighting Talk combines fast-paced storytelling with snappy banter, wild and brutal action, and some very nasty villains to create a funny, ferocious crime thriller that will keep you glued to the page.

From the author of The Glasgow Grin and The Curious Case of The Missing Moolah, comes the brand-new thriller, Fighting Talk – featuring the Stanton brothers in their grittiest adventure yet.

It would be a crime to miss it.

CONTAINS VERY STRONG LANGUAGE AND VIOLENCE THROUGHOUT. NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED OR THOSE OF A SENSITIVE DISPOSITION.

When loan shark Alan Piper offers Eric Stanton a job, he reluctantly agrees. Against his better judgment, Eric enlist the aid of his psychotic brother, Derek. The pair are soon embroiled in dog fighting, mad junkies, Polish gangsters, and a hell of a lot of violence.

Martin Stanley’s Fighting Talk is Brit Grit at its best. Choc full of great characters and dialogue, its as funny as it is brutal, and has a great sense of place. Five Gritty Stars!

As a longstanding fan of The Stanton Brothers series, I am always happy to see another one of their adventures come along, and this one did not let me down. It's an interesting length (a novella of just over 100 pages) and moves swiftly -- it's always a good sign when you stay up past your normal bedtime to finish.

I was surprised by how the bickering between the Stantons, which is a central theme in the series, was outright animosity early on. I was *not* surprised by the lashings of violence. The amount of broken bones in this outing is very, very high. This adventure is also somewhat less raunchy than previous installments (but the raunch is still there).

Martin Stanley's work also features a good measure of biting humor, and this again is present. Perhaps the biggest surprise is how much is revealed of main character Eric Stanton's sentimental streak. Morals have always been painted in shades of grey in this series, and this helps delineate Eric.

When Eric Stanton and his wild ape brother Derek try to help out a defenceless young mother Katie McDonagh who owes money to their sleazy loan shark boss Alan Piper they soon find themselves up to their necks in illegal dogfights, psychopaths, junkies and broken bones. So it’s just business as usual for the Stanton brothers and another fast-moving novella from talented crime author Martin Stanley. Anyone looking for a darkly rich journey through the North East underworld with splatters of gallows humour should seek out this entertaining novella. I will certainly be reading more work by this talented writer in the future.
