Northern California beckons the Mystic Caravan crew and they’re looking forward to some down time after their previous stop. Emotions are running high and the workers are desperate to return to their normal lives. Poet Parker and Kade Denton, for instance, have a new camper to move into and they’re both excited at the prospect of an adventure that has nothing to do with monsters. All that changes on their first night in a new camp when wendigo howls fill the air and trouble comes knocking at their metaphorical door. One wendigo is nothing to worry about but when ghosts start calling every night, only maintaining a distance because of the dreamcatcher, things take a turn for the worse. That’s when the ghosts start invading Poet’s dreams, leaving her on the precipice of death without outside intervention. All roads lead to a place called Falk, a forgotten logging town that died during the Great Depression. It seems the town is long gone but a bevy of ghosts remain, as does a secret so terrible that the entire foundation of the Mystic Caravan world is about to be rocked. A fight is coming, and both sides are readying for battle. For Poet, things aren’t as easy as they seem, though. What happens when the monster you think you’re fighting isn’t a monster at all and the so-called victims are the ones who need to be taken down?
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
I enjoyed learning more about split souls and Wendigos. Once again the Mystic Caravan Circus investigates and takes down the local threat. Kade was a little more emotional and whiny but that resolves itself in the end. At least there was less drama in the Kade, Luke, Poet triangle.
New town,New start. That what Poet thought until eerie voices chanting wakes her up from her slumber. Ghosts has surrounded the circus and invading Poets dreams, what do they want and why are they keeping them inside of the circle?Something else is watching them ,that wishes them harm, stories tell of a Wendigo in the woods that surrounds the circus. This book fell flat for me,it wasn't enough oomph in it for me,not enough excitement. A wendigo, ghost town, witches, ghosts,I needed more
I’m sorry but for me, Kade is almost ruining this series. It’s bad enough that the constant bickering between Kade and Luke is like Griffin and Jerry from another series the author writes. All of the female heroines in her books have an overbearing man for a partner. I’m getting used to that. But Kade is just flat out annoying. His whining in this book almost made me stop reading it. I really hope the next in the series is better or I’m giving up. Which is sad because I really like the other characters.
This book is great. The storyline is great. I find myself falling in love with the characters. Amanda has such a great imagination. She is a great writer and I love when the series crossover.
I have been waiting for the sixth installment in this series for months, and felt a bit lost when I finished number five, secretly worrying that there wouldn't be anymore. So when I saw this pop up, I bought it as soon as I possibly could. Never mind that I have 34 titles waiting on my netgalley list to be read and reviewed, I decided to take a breather and read something I had been dying to read for a while. And I was NOT disappointed. I honestly think that this is my favourite in the series thus far.
Poet and the gang are back with their normal shenanigans in this installment, setting up their circus in a location that is in the middle of a few towns. As soon as they arrive, they notice that there's something off putting about the fog that rolls in at night, as well as the way that it seems to linger during the day in places that the sun doesn't quite reach. The first night, Luke thinks he hears chanting off in the woods that border the camp ground, this puts him on edge, but the other's aren't overly worried because nothing has presented itself yet, and besides, this is what they do, they travel around and battle baddies. However, when Poet ends up having an awfully vivid, real life feeling nightmare, and is plagued by the chanting in her head, the gang start to realise that something is up, team that with Raven believing she heard a Wendigo howl in the woods, and you know you're in for a treat. They need to find out what they're fighting, what's with the chanting, and how can they protect themselves against something when they don't know exactly what it is. An action packed, mystery adventure that does not disappoint.
As I said above, I honestly think that this is my FAVOURITE in the series so far. I loved the descriptions of the location, as well as the people that Poet and Co. meet while they're out and about. I loved Caroline's character and her mysteriousness was portrayed very well. The way that the mystery was written was perfect. I found that I was finding out things when the characters were, and this was fantastic. It irks me a little when I work out what's happening before the characters do, it takes a little bit away from the story I believe.
Luke is his normal sassy, moping self, which I find is getting a little tired, but I guess it's just his character, so I should just shut up about it. Kade's innate NEED to protect Poet still annoys the crap out of me though, I understand wanting to protect those that you love, but I feel like it almost borders on him trying to control her, when she makes decisions of her own that put her in danger, he instantly hits it down. As I said, I get the need to protect those that you love, but I feel like he should trust Poet enough to know what she can handle and what she can't.
I was a little sad that Nellie didn't have a bigger role in this story, as I have a massive soft spot for the cross dressing dwarf, but I can understand why he didn't. I'm also beginning to come around more and more to Raven, she's a bitch and she's not afraid to tell you how it is, but she's a fun character, and I love her and Poet's banter the more that I read it.
All in all, I am still loving this series, and I cannot WAIT for the next one!!
This book has me so excited. I love anything paranormal, and the way this story is told gave me a sense of satisfaction that lovers of a good ghost story look for. When Mystic Caravan ends up at their newest location, they are once again met with unexplained strange happenings when on the first night a heavy fog rolls in that is followed by some quiet chanting they hear coming from the woods. Upon investigation, they come across an elderly hermit living alone deep in the woods who offers them some confusing and seemingly threatening advice "stay out of of the woods at night, stay off my property and watch out for the shadow hunters." Every night they are met with the same thick fog but with it comes a herd of ghosts who seem uncomfortably interested in Poet and Kade. They have invaded Poets dreams and kept them captive at night, but why? Poet sets out to find answers in the neighboring abandoned ghost town, but gets a startling surprise in her search. There is a mystery that needs to be solved and Poet is the one who is chosen to figure it out... I love how this story was brought together, if you love to get goosebumps and a little spooked (just a little) you have to read this... even if you haven't read any of the others in the series (which I also recommend). Enjoy!
Overall, I am enjoying this series. I call them my comfort reads because I tend to read them as I am falling asleep at night. I guess that's why they call them "cozy mysteries". I am however getting frustrated with a few of the characters and finding everything BUT the mystery to be annoying or boring. I really enjoyed Book 5, but wasn't really feeling Books 4 or 6... I think I will give the next few a shot but at this point I am really not sure if I am going to finish the series.
Spoilers below...
I am ranting. 2.5 starts rounded down to 2. I know she can do better and I just found this book to be disappointing.
The mystic caravan series keeps getting better and better with each book. This book had a lot going on. Poet was once again in the thick of it. The story centred on a ghost town called Falk. The gang realise there is trouble afoot at the new place when they hear chanting in their mind and a very strange and creepy fog envelopes the circus. Poet sees strange figures in the fog. a mystery ensues regarding what is happening and how to battle it. The book also investigates Kade being the son of a mage. The possibility of Kade developing powers is explored. The next crossover is discussed at the beginning of the book when Poet talks about the next place they will be visiting -Hemlock Cove. I cannot wait for the book as it will feature the Winchester Witches. It will be interesting to see them interacting. Max a!so mentions a mage who is more powerful than him. I think he is discussing Zoe from the Convenant books. I wonder if there will be crossover with them too. Cannot wait for the next books. Highly recommended.
Poet, Made and the rest of the circus members are at their newest venue. It's an other place they have never visited before and Poet for one, is interested In investigating the area. Especially the Ghost town just the other side of the woods. Due to the density of the woods the ground all around the circus is covered in a really dense fog which looks like there are things moving in it. Before Poet can go exploring things get really creepy, they set the dreamcatcher up as normal (to keep out evil) and during the evening meal are alerted to a breach in the perimeter, when they all go to investigate the breach they find Ghosts too numerous to count, totally surrounding the dreamcatchers borders. They are not able to cross but three of the Ghosts take a special interest in Poet, Kade and Luke, for reasons they can't figure out. Then if that's not bad enough t they hear a Wendigo howling in the woods. Then it's all hands on deck to try to find out what's going on and come up with a plan to deal with it.
When the Mystic Circus pulls up for a new gig just outside Eureka they're met by a weird fog and mysterious whispering woodland. Poet and Raven can sense something but can't find to work out what it is.
Luke shifts to have a scent around but only finds a few shifters with no malignant intent and an old lady, Caroline, living self suffiently in her ancestral home hidden in the trees.
Ghosts appear, faintly, at nightfall and Poet has a horrific nightmare that it takes Raven to wake her from. When the ghosts return and a Wendigo is heard howling the pace steps up and whilst they know they are being threatened it's hard to pinpoint by what exactly.
Can they keep the ghosts at bay? Will they work out who is forming the threats and to what end? Can they keep everyone safe and eradicate the the cause?
Great, if freaky, characters, plenty of drama and comedy especially the snarky kind.
First off, if you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this book, I have a suggestion...start with the first book. While you get a full story with this book, you will enjoy it even more if you read them in order. This is because these characters are SO much fun to get to know. The members of The Mystic Caravan Circus are a fascinating bunch filled with magic, snark and eye-opening adventures. Amanda Lee never runs out of imagination and never "calls a story in" giving her all to each one. If I was forced to mention a small criticism, all that I could dig up would be the characters' tendency to "...crack his/her neck..." a LOT, but while that is annoying, it CAN be overlooked. I gave this book 5 stars not to "be nice" but because it EARNS them. This is a WONDERFUL series!
In Freaky Rites, the Mystic Caravan crew is up against something monstrous that they are having a hard time figuring out how to fight. There is mysterious fog, strange ghosts, chanting voices, and a howling wendigo. Poet and Kade are supposed to be enjoying spending time together in their new luxury trailer. They are supposed to be enjoying downtime after Washington. They aren't supposed to be dealing with crazy emotions. Honestly, Kade is pretty whiny in Freaky Rites. His character growth comes with a heavy side of complaining and insisting on having everything explained to him *right* this* minute*. There is some serious pay-off once you get past his obnoxiousness. Freaky Rites wasn't my favorite book in the series, but I am excited for what is being set up for future books.
These books just get more Interesting with each one. The characters more strange and unique with each story told.
This time Poet and the gang are outside the small town of Euricka. This are pretty strange starting the very first night when the dreams start. It looks like they are dealing with something they have never encountered before. When Poet is attacked, Kade worries they may not figure the mystery out before Poet is killed,
This action packed thriller is full of snarky fun and chilly things that go bump in the night. I absolutely love the characters and enjoy the scary stories told in the night. I highly recommend this for those who like creepy cozy tales.
4 stars Action-packed. Wendigo in Northern California Ghosts? A new RV and magical abilities
I enjoyed books 4 and 5 so much that I rated them a very strong 4 stars. I rated book six with 4 stars, but the story is more like 3.75. Reading six books in a row isn’t my preferred way to follow a series. Sometimes a breather is necessary. Especially when two book are quite exceptional.
In this episode we get to see the new RV. Nice! Dropping in on an old California mining area comes with spooky scenery. Lots of fog all day long. And when the fog swirls around, it looks like ghosts are watching the Mystic Caravan team as they go about their daily routines. What is real and what is…evil?
And urban fantasy with a great cast of characters. A group of monster hunters room around the country in a traveling circus. Someone normal humans others or supernatural beings that travel the country seeking evil and dangerous supernatural beings that are up to no good. They find them they hunt them down and they destroyed them. Making the surrounding area safe once again. Many different types of supernaturals are in the circus and they run up against many other different types of supernatural they’re up to no good. Follow along in their adventures and she will not be disappointed. Check it out
Kade and Poet are excited to arrive in California to get their new trailer. That seems to be the only thing in the place to be excited about though. Poet is nearly killed in a dream. Raven and Kade saved her but, things need to be adjusted around the circus. Getting information about Falk or the people around this place is like pulling teeth. Then there is all the attempted (and some successful) mind control. These people in this area are off their rockers. Finally, after involving Max, Raven and Poet finally put the pieces together. Let's hope that all is well that ends well. Great book and series, I highly recommend.
I am in love with this series!!!! Every book that I have read this far has been great, but Freaky Rites is the best book yet! Aside from loving Kade and Poet, Luke, Nellie, Max, even Raven and the rest of the Mystic Caravan crew the supernaturals are awesome. Obviously there has been research done on many of the creatures we encounter. It really stinks that I have to wait for the next book 😿 Beings this was my first series by this author I think it's time to read more of her work, so that's where I'm headed! I love the snark and humor 😉
I like Amanda Lee’s writing style and have read many of her books. They are always snarky and fun so are great for lighthearted reading. This book is no different Mystic Caravan arrives at a new location in California only to find more mischief, mystery and murder. There are ghosts, a ghost town, a wendigo, zombies and an errant coven to deal with. Poet and the gang have there hands full trying to keep everyone safe. It’s a fun read as usual. I was happy to read that Mystic Caravan will be headed to Hemlock Cove. Now that will be fun!
This is the first of Lee's Mystic Caravan books for me, and I'm sold. Although I can see where there's series-long character development, the book is independent enough that I could jump right in. I really liked the use of mythology, and the fact that said mythology had enough of a twist to make it fresh. I was happily reminded of Seanan McGuire's Deadlands book throughout Freaky Rites--both stories of traveling circuses that are more than they seem--and I'll definitely be checking out Lee's backlist.
I'm really up and down about this series, and it isn't only because I think circuses are creepy. This genre is, for me, very much about the characters and their interactions. I do not always like the characters in this series. This book was, in many ways, Kade's story. Turns out Kade is a bit of a petulant whiner a lot of the time. In my world, guys should NOT be whiners...bad enough when the women tend to petulance. And I still want to know how all those trailers get from one venue to the next!!
The show must go on, even if some of the circus folks just finished killing some kind of paranormal creatures. This town is full of witches, descendants of three of the original witches. Those three accused a young women of being a witch that must be cleansed. Cleansing in their vocabulary equals torture, beatings, and rape. They fed her human flesh, turning her into a wendigo against her will. These three witches will attack the circus and attempt to steal power from whomever they can. They are in for a bit of a surprise!
Pretty Good Book, a couple grammatical errors but overall it was a good story. Lots of twists and turns and some character growth.
I still think the author needs to stop giving the same standard details about the series in every book, if you made it to book 6 then you obviously know the standard information that she is telling. There is no need for it and it's a waste of space and reading time.
Excited to see Kade's character development after this book for sure!
There is lots of action and a few surprises. Made has to face a few fears regarding Poet and come to terms with a new reality. Poet and crew face down another unknown type of enemy. The rules seem to change constantly. One of my favorite sides are the readings that Poet does, they are highly entertaining. Definitely recommend this read. So excited for the next.
I absolutely adore this series. The characters are all perfect, they say the best things and they're all just so wonderfully realised - they are all totally bonkers but they are so lovable.
And Freaky Rites is a classic, great story, not a predictable moment in it. The kind of book you stay up late to finish, because you just have to know how Poet, Kade, Luke and the others will win. The best fun.
I enjoyed this addition to the Mystic Caravan series. I will say that I enjoyed the fact that Luke was downplayed quite a bit. I haven't enjoyed his character and this book helped redeem him a bit.
I can't wait to see what will happen with Kade's discovery. The fact that Zoe was mentioned in addition to the fact that we know they are headed to Winchester territory, makes me believe we will have a 3 story crossover!
Ms.Lee can spin a tale and keep me captive. I love that I have gotten to know the characters in The Mystic Caravan series. I might disagree with some of Raven's views, but I like her, she is true to her carnival family. Luke is my favorite, I am glad Max is making more appearances in the series, Nellie is awesome, love his fashion sense, although, I am surprised that Luke has no comments about Nellie's fashion sense.I
