As a Shadow, Asp planned his assassinations with meticulous care. His work required one thing, that the Council direct his kills. The coded target became a "sanctioned hit” and that distinction was vital.
His most recent assignment took him to a remote area of the Andes Mountains in Colombia. He completed his assassination according to plan - more or less - but no amount of careful planning could have prepared him for the dire circumstances he found himself in. As he faded in and out of consciousness due to a life-threatening bullet wound, he knew he might not get home. He'd resigned himself to dying alone, just not this soon.
Lyric Gadson was an unwilling expatriate. She’d trade her grandfather’s farm in the foothills of the Andes for her old life in Jacksonville, Florida in a heartbeat. But, the cost of a return ticket was out of reach, and Lyric found herself maturing from carefree teen to responsible woman on a remote Colombia banana farm. When her beloved grandfather failed to return from his yearly pilgrimage to his wife’s shrine, Lyric thought nothing of packing her kit and hiking into the Andes mountains to find him. She found her grandfather—and an unconscious man near death. Her decision to stay and care for the dying man would usher in the greatest love of her life, but it could also threaten everyone else she held dear.
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author, Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class consisting of 13 students (yes that is thirteen, eleven girls and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes cold...don't judge.)
Is it possible to give it 6 stars? I have a confession, I think I am liking the Shadows even more then the Kings. Even Guardian need people to carry out their darker deeds. These fall to the Shadows assassins who kill to make the world a better place. Asp is one such assassin. Betrayed early in his career he has the chance to right a personal wrong.
The details and strategies employed by the military (in this case the snipers) are amazing and completing the task is only half the job they need to get away as well. After the shot is fired the "hunter becomes the prey".
The only thing I was not sure about was hot the relationship between Asp and Lyric started, but I can see and feel how it developed, strength begets strength, and as tough as Asp is in this relationship he is in second place, Lyric is the boss. She delivered some of the best verbal beat-downs in any book. She did not taken any crap or pity she took what she wanted. However Asp was the star of this story.
I just do not understand how each book seem to be even better then the last, and the set up was to the next story was just as intriguing. I can't wait for the next book be it King or Shadow.
"She was the beacon of light in a life that was consumed by shadows"
This book was so good! loved Asp and Lyric so much. I confess; Even though I loved Asp, I loved Lyric a little more. She was a strong heroine and new what she wanted and she wanted Asp. Asp wanted to keep Lyric at arms length, but as she helped him recover from his injury their attraction to each other was undeniable. Lots of action and suspense and passion. Can't wait for more of this series.
Every time I read a new Kris Michaels book, I hear Queen's song "Another One Bites The Dust" in my head. LOL...In a good way of course, because these bad a$$, ex-military men fall into love with an impact I can liken only to a meteor smashing into the surface of this planet.
I love watching these men, whose choice in life is to serve and protect, making the world a better place for all. Their experiences make them hardened and damaged, and leave them feeling so unworthy, except in the company of their brothers in arms. Until the day their "the one" smashes into their self-imposed walls and proves to them it's ok to hope for more.
Asp and Lyric's story is full of heart-stopping action, devastating heartbreak, breathless anticipation, surprise twists, thrilling suspense and melt your heart love...this story, seriously, has it all. I will never tire of getting a visit from our favorite Kings, and I hope that this author never gets tired of telling us stories about this world.
Asp owes Lyric everything, Isaac wants Lyric with everything he is...but Asp has always been in control and that is what has kept Isaac alive. Lyric fell for Isaac before he fully opened his eyes, his worry for and care of Mrs Henshaw and KD, even when delirious, shows her who he really is, not the Asp mask he lives his life behind. I love that Lyric can show him another way, another option, an option where he forgives himself and allows them happiness. The Guardian's appear to be unearthing some very dangerous material and possibly some dangerous enemies too. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
No plot spoilers There are a couple of potential triggers relating to physical violence There are a few editorial errors that really irritated, such as missing words, but definitely not enough to kill the book. Given the authors writing ability the errors are surprising and speak of lazy editing. If I had taken the time and effort to construct such a delicious book I would be deeply concerned about the validity of the editing team employed. All that aside, it really is only a handful of errors and should not deter anyone from purchasing the book. There are some sex scenes and plenty of swearing. There are graphic descriptions of violence, but take that in the context it's meant. The Shadow operators are ex military and highly skilled and the plotline is about more than the violence. The characterisation is outstanding both lead and supporting characters, as ever from Kris Michaels. The storyline is so well crafted you find yourself caring about the characters and hoping for the outcome you want to read. I can't recommend the series highly enough but suggest that you read the series from the beginning to obtain the best reading experience.
I borrowed Asp ~ Guardian Shadow Security World ~ Book 2 from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Asp, as he is know in the Guardian Shadow Operators is a very honest and moral man. He only follows the sanctions of Guardian and lives by a set of personal limits set by his personal beliefs and morals. I loved this character. He also is a very large man with a hugh appitiete and loves food.
On a mission to Columbia that is personal to him he meets Lyric when he is shot by another sniper and she nurses him back to health in a hidden cave in the foothills of the Andies. Lyric is a sweet but sassy and tough young woman that meets all the special things Asp wants in a woman and she knows what he does for a living and is fine with it, which makes her perfect for him. They move out of the cave and double back and Issac (the name Lyric calls him) goes out on his own to catch the sniper that is after him. The sniper turns out to be Billy his old spotter fromt he Marines and the deception played on both of them brings them together with Guardian teams and they take down the rogue group building a terrorist cell.
The ending was brutal but fitting somehow with Asp still following the requirements of his job with Guardian.
I have loved just about every Kris Michaels book that I have read (I think I have read them all). Whether it's her fantasy books with Patricia Knight (Everlight), her M/M standalone (A Heart's Desire - freakin' awesome story and I am not crazy about M/M books), her Kings of Guardian (still waiting for the Wonder Twins), or this new Guardian Shadow World series, Kris Michaels tells an attention grabbing story that is hard to put down (unless you put it down because you finished it but then you will pick it back up for a re-read to make sure you didn't miss anything the first time).
Lyric is one heck of a spitfire and the perfect foil for Asp's too rigid demeanor. Given the setting for the story, we really get to know these two great characters. The story is well paced with a several twists and turns that are totally unexpected. The dialogue is fantastic and smoothly jumps from intense to joking to threatening to romantic and never loses its rhythm. I always love the appearances of the Kings, who can always be counted upon for a snarky comment or two.
I cannot emphasize enough about how much I love this author's work and look forward to each and every new release.
Isaac Cooper (call name Asp) is an assassin for the Guardian Group. Specialized, elite black operation agents who work like smoke, blow in, then blow out without a trace. But this mission is different. Asp gets hurt and must lay low while he heals. And his Angel of Mercy, Lyric Gadson, checks all the boxes of his perfect woman. As he recuperates in a backwater Columbian cave, he realizes how much he owes her and knows, although his current life precludes it his fantasy of the future includes her. American born Lyric lives with her father and grandfather on their Columbian family farm. She's smart, resourceful and brave. Although sometimes her sass and anger get the better of her. But she recognizes Isaac as the hero he is, realizing he is one of the ghosts who kills the monsters of the world. The story takes us into the dark, vicious underworld of Columbia. Gruesome actions by gruesome men are what the Guardian teams move in to stop. Can they? Will Isaac recognize what he must do? Can Lyric ever be safe? Asp will make sure of it. However long it takes.
Asp is the second book in the Guardian Shadow World series. This is a spinoff series, so a number of characters from the Kings of Guardian series make appearances.
I liked Asp a/k/a/ Isaac and thought he was a great guy. My heart hurt for the pain he felt after he was used by his CIA handler to kill someone who should not have been killed. When the opportunity came to go after that man, I understood completely why Isaac wanted to be the man to complete the mission. He was successful, but he was shot in the process. It was only a matter of time before he was found and killed.
Lyric lived with her grandfather on his banana farm in the mountains of Columbia. Her grandfather found Isaac when he was injured, and Lyric took care of him. Feelings developed, but Isaac tried pushing her away afraid his world would cause Lyric harm.
Isaac and Lyric were great characters and I liked them together as a couple. I admired how Lyric accepted Isaac’s job and loved him regardless.
I’m enjoying the new shadow series and look forward to reading Lycos’ book next.
Isaac ‘Asp’ Cooper is called in because the next sanctioned hit Guardian’s giving out has personal meaning for him. Asp’s CIA handler was trying to use him to carry out private vendettas and told his parent’s he was dead and they died before they knew better Now that same handler is running his own private op and Army in a US ally’s territory. Asp gets the job done but he’s hurt in the process.
Lyric Gadson was an unruly teen when she was carted to Columbia with her parents to live on her grandpa’s land. After battling with the national police officer that doesn’t think she means it when she says no, Lyric goes up the mountain to ensure her grandpa didn’t have an accident and is in need of help. But when Lyric gets there, she finds grandpa struggling to keep a critically wounded Asp alive. To avoid problems with the police, protect Lyric from FARC rebels and to help with the harvest, it’s decided Lyric will tend Asp while grandpa returns to the ranch. Rating: 4.25stars
Have been a huge lover of the Guardian Security series but the Shadow World just takes it up one notch further. Asp is a guy who has spent so many years in the shadows hidden in the dark, but when the light that surrounds Lyric is the one thing keeping him alive will it be too hard for him to remain there. Lyric is strong, beautiful inside and out and has enough sass to hand this man his ass when it is needed. As both their lives hinge on not only his skills but Guardian Security, can he keep her at arms length to not only protect her but his own heart as well. Their story is action packed, passionate, full of angst, heartache, secrets and revelations. Asp will have you captivated from the start and loving every minute as the shadows start to be lit by a light so strong. Bring on book 3, because I am totally hooked on this spin off series.
Exciting and fast-moving after a beginning that paralleled the careful and meticulous planning and set up the Shadows use. Asp is an assassin and has discovered that an old enemy has resurfaced, and is not doing anything positive.
Receiving a sanction from Guardian allows Asp to take "corrective" action on the enemy. Unfortunately, that opens up new problems and Asp is literally caught in the crossfire. An old farmer helps him when he finds Asp delirious and weak from blood loss. When the man's granddaughter comes looking for him, she takes his place as the stranger's protector and healer.
Amazingly, they fall in love, and impossibly, they try to survive long enough to have their future. There are some good twists here and they make the story more interesting. There are also a few loose threads that need to be pulled into a new story!
I’m already a mega-fan of the original Guardian series and now am really enjoying the spin-off Guardian Shadow World Series which has all the original players and the family-like vibe. This second book in this spin-off series features assassin Asp and Lyric, a woman living in rural Colombia with her father and grandfather, who rescues Asp, when a hit goes wrong.
These novels aren’t exactly standalone. For example, this novel furthers the Stratus overarching storyline a bit. This was never the mildest series but this one was quite violent. Also, as with all this author’s books in the series so far, it was incredibly steamy. I enjoyed this and am looking forward to more of the Guardian group!
Loved this book! The storyline was really good! Action, suspense, drama.... Twists and turns that grabbed me and kept me on pins and needles as to what was going to happen next to Isaac and Lyric! There was not one slow part in the whole book... Everything kept moving at a fast pace! The love story between Isaac and Lyric was beautiful. They were both good hearted passionate people and I liked their characters very much! As usual though there is always so many likeable characters in Kris' books.... I particularly enjoy when the other Guardian team members and families from Archangel down are involved throughout the story! I highly recommend this book and all of the others in the Guardian series! Each one of them are winners!!!!😊
Sooo good!!!! Asp is after the man that set him up. How many innocents had he killed because of this man? He would never know. The man had been coded and Asp would end him. He just never expected to be shot because of it. Lyric is in Columbia with her father and grandfather. Her grandfather has not returned and she goes out to find him. She can't believe what she finds when she finally finds her grandfather or I should say who. Lyric has been taking care of Asp since she found him. Now they are on the run. He has to keep her safe. He is in even more shock when he finds his buddy that he had been told was dead. Lyric is on her way to the ranch and Asp needs to finish this so he can get back to his woman.
Another excellent book by my favorite author . Her story lines are always well structured and her characters have depth and are believable . Her sense of humor is wonderful . I laughed until I cried over the scene when Lyric and Billy meet . One criticism grammar. I find this frequently with ebooks and almost never with paper books . I don't know whether it's the proofreaders or whoever types the book for publication . I'm older and this is one of my pet peeves when it comes to ebooks.
I absolutely love this series and am looking forward to Dixon's, Thantos', Lycos' and Moriah's stories . Thank you Kris.
Asp has a chance to get closure on his previous crooked, no longer CIA 'handler', who has been identified, coded, and cleared for removal. His trip into Columbia wasn't bad, but getting shot wasnt on his itinerary for leaving. He's found by the grandfather of Lyric Gadson, and she nurses him back to health, unknowingly putting herself in danger. The bad guys know Asp isn't dead and they're actively searching. The twist is there are men in the compound who still think they are CIA, and don't know their 'boss ' has snowed them. Asp figures this out and reports back to Guardian, creating a new game plan, which includes getting Lyric out. Does it work?
WOW! Another great story! This one involved Asp and Lyric. Asp sent to finish off his old handler only to get shot by another sniper - which we find out is his old buddy Billy. Lyric's grandfather watched Asp get to the cave and did what he could until Lyric showed up. Lyric nurses him back to life and they promptly fell in love you each other. Then tragedy strikes when Lyric's grandfather and father were killed by a sadistic cop. Asp managed to take care of him but left him alive to keep his conscious clear. I am glad when these two reunite and start working on their happily ever after! FANTASTIC job Kris! I would recommend this book!
Wow, another epically told story by Kris Michaels! ASP is where book two of the Shadow series takes us. He’s on a mission to Columbia to take out the one person who ruined his life before he became a Shadow. But when the mission is sanctioned and he completes it....well things take a turn. Lyric is worried about her grandfather as he was supposed to return to their home two days earlier, so she’s heading up the mountains to see if she can locate him.
So many reveals in this one that were unexpected to say the least! I hope for one that you are in your writing cave Kris, cause I want more from the Shadows like yesterday hehe:)
Asp/Issac and Lyric are a good match. They meet in an unlikely way, but at least Lyric knows the truth right away. Lyric is a strong and insightful character who faces a lot of grief and guilt through the story. Asp is one of my favorite Shadows and I thought his background with the CIA and then what he finds on this mission were fascinating. They have great chemistry and I love the friendship that is get on the ranch. His love of food also added to his story through fun and quirky moments!
Love this spin off of the Guardians as the Shadows are a fascinating unit!
This is my second book in this series and I have to say it is amazing! The story is captivating. The characters are intense! Men with a strong set of right and wrong doing the things they can to help justice, and the women who see them…the goodness amidst the darkness, the sacrifices and pain. These story’s pull you in with such and intensity that holds you to the end. So much depth and emotion where you find yourself completely engaged in everything! Best read in awhile! Can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series. BRAVO Kris! My Respect for what you have birthed into this world! Definitely a five star!
This is a really good read. I didn’t want to put it down once I started reading and didn’t. Isaac aka Asp is shot by a sniper after he snipes his latest assignment. He is saved by a man who comes to the area yearly to honor his wife and hidden in a cave. Lyric, the man’s granddaughter, comes in search of her grandfather stays with Isaac and helps his recover. It takes like two months and the two fall in love. This book has action, suspense, justice, heartbreak, love, surprise twist, steam and love. I love the theme of the Guardian series…”Whatever it takes.” “As long as it takes.”
Asp is an assassin. Lyric’s grandfather found him after he was injured during a mission. She took over, was tough and saved his life, in more ways than one..... I absolutely love being brought into the world of Guardian Security that Kris Michaels has created. Whether it’s the Security side, or the Shadow World, it keeps you turning pages non-stop to see what’s going to come next. Asp was the same - I couldn’t put it down and til I finished it.... and Asp & Lyric’s story was worth it, they were perfect together and their story was great!!
Meeting Lyric was fate. Loving her was complicated. However Asp had met his match. Saving his life Lyric was close up and personal with Asp for many weeks without him even realising it, what he saw when he gained consciousness made him re-evaluate his life. Both on the run in Columbia, they met and dealt with dangerous situations, and an old friend who gave him news about Lyrics Dad & Grandad. They had no choice, they turned around and rushed back knowing their 50/50 chance of survival was ever decreasing.
Interesting way for Asp to meet the woman who would become so important to him. After he’s been badly injured during a job in Columbia, Asp retreated to a cave. When an older man found him and started treating his wounds he was near death. He stayed with him until his granddaughter came looking for him, thinking he might be injured. Lyric stayed to help so her grandfather could get back to their farm. As she nursed Asp back to health they grew closer, learned to rely on each other and face danger together.
I enjoyed reading this book. This didn’t feel as much of a romance book but more of a book on surviving a gun shot in the mountains and being hunted by the bad guys. The action was interesting. There were some slow moments but it could just be me, preferring a more fast action packed pace. Asp showed how skilled he is in shooting, fighting and surviving. It was cool to watch. He and Lyric get along very well and she is a good MC for him. She trusts him and is good with who he is.
Kris Michaels writes as if she has personal experience in military and spook work. Her dedication to detail is wonderful without being overwhelming. Her grasp of the human psyche is evident in her storytelling. That her men are HAWT without being pretty, just as the females are lovely no matter size is also appealing. Definitely an author to keep in your library. I highly recommend!
This was another sexy book in the Kings of Guardian series. I am really loving the Shadow World spin offs. Assassins who know they will never have a real life finding the women who can accept their pasts and share their future... Who wouldn't like that? That Joseph shows up just makes this series even better. I will read anything Guardian knowing it will be fantastic.
The story was engaging and kept this reader on the edge of her reading chair. I know Asp has found his one. A American beauty in a foreign country. But what will happen with Billy? What is Stratus and where is this going to lead. There is also definitely more to the story with Lycos and Moriah.
Want to know about what is happening back at the complex it seems to be growing into a whole community
