What if nature fights back?
Still in a daze, I take it all in: the wind, the leaden skies, the churning moody sea. And, far in the distance, a misty outline. Skelsay. Wilderness haven. Building-site. Luxury-retreat-to-be. And now, home. When her father’s construction work takes Em’s family to the uninhabited island of Skelsay, she is excited, but also a little uneasy. Soon Em, and her friend Zac, realise that the setbacks, mishaps and accidents on the island point to something altogether more sinister: the wilderness all around them has declared war. Danger lurks everywhere. But can Em and Zac persuade the adults to believe it before it’s too late?
Praise for Wilderness Wars:
'Wilderness Wars slow-builds menace from its nail-biting opening to its stunning apocalyptic climax. This is a golden eagle of a book—it grabs you in its talons and won't let go. A thought-provoking and often frightening study of what happens when you mess with Nature and Nature decides to fight back. And how faith, family and friendship can forge the right path.' Wilderness Wars is a book about protecting and caring for the environment because if you try to stir it up you might end up in a mess.
Wilderness Wars start with a normal frantic family moving to an inhibited island called Skelsay where their dad plans to build a luxury hotel but the harsh weather doesn’t make it easy.
I think the main character Em is a realistic character because as she is a young child she acts like a young child and is quite stubborn. Henderson helps us understand Em by her interior thoughts and we can understand why she thinks certain thoughts and we can see her thoughts in the writing which Henderson has done quite well. Henderson builds quite a climax to the end of the book and I think altho it is quite unrealistic I felt that she brought it into the book well enough for me to not think too much how unrealistic it was but to think more about how they are going to survive and how they are gonna get to safety. The postscript, which is five years after the events of the novel, didn’t feel like completely different people but the same which I thought was quite good.
I would recommend this book to people, adults and children if they like reading about children being children and once in a while events that make you stay for more. In my opinion this book was okay - it wasn't too catching for me and I kinda lost interest a little bit here and there. It was an interesting book overall but could do with more adventure.

f there had to be one thing I enjoyed about Wilderness Wars it would be the build-up. The book starts off with introducing the characters to the story and them just living everyday lives with a bit of conflict in the way but apart from that the book is relatively easy to follow at the start and got more interesting at the end.
, One of my favorite characters in this book is Em as she was like this easy-going relatable teen who did nothing but really cares for others. She was determined and hardworking, she made reading the book worth it to me. My favorite moment in the book was at the end when em risks her life to go to save her dad. When the tidal wave comes and saves everyone she then goes out of her way to go back down into the villager to save her dad. I thought it was really wholesome, if I most definitely had to change one thing about the book it would be that when the book starts off is not as interesting as I would have hoped you do have to be willing to read it and prepared to wait until near the end when it gets more interesting,
I would recommend this book to friends and family although not to someone who doesn't favor reading books as this did take me a number of days/weeks to read so I advise that someone with a lot of patience does read this.

The book I am reviewing is called Wilderness Wars. The genre of this book is eco-adventure. The author of the book is Barbara Henderson, and it was published in 2018 by pokey hat. The book is about a family moving to a Scottish island called Skelsay because they would like to build a resort on the island. However, the wilderness on the island decides to fight back. One of my favourite characters in this book is called Zach. I like him because he is a nice character, and he is also a bit funny. I also think that we both have some similarities. My favourite part of the book was when the tidal wave hit Skelsay. I liked this part because it got quite intense because I didn't know what was going to happen next. I also found it quite scary when the dad fell in the water and nearly died. My least favourite character in this book is called Izzy. I don’t like her because she didn’t get much time in the book, and she was only a baby. My least favourite parts in the book are all the parts where Mr. Johnston was teaching the children. I only found this boring because there was not much happening at the time. Altogether, i think this was a good book, and i would recommend that you get it.

The book that I am reviewing is called Wilderness Wars and the author of the book is Barbara Henderson; it was published by pokey hat and its publication was 2018. In this book there is a family that is going to this deserted Scottish island because his dad is going to try make a luxury hotel, but the wilderness is against them, and it makes it even harder with all the horrific weather. One of the characters that stood out to me was Struan because in the book he is very funny, mischievous, and brave too. One of my favorite events was when the children in the class saw a tidal wave and had to try escape! one of my least favorite characters was Izzy because she was not one of the main characters in the book. One of my least favorite events in the book was when they were learning in class because it was boring and dull. In conclusion I thought that this book was exceptionally good, and I would rate it a 5 stars.

Em’s family relocate to the remote Scottish island of Skelsay where her father will be part of a team building a new leisure complex, but not all will go according to plan!

Oh my goodness. Wilderness Wars is an absolute cracker of a book. It may be aimed at children, who I know will be utterly captivated by it, but I adored it too. Barbara Henderson really is the most fantastic storyteller. She holds the reader captive so that it is impossible to put down the book until every last drop of it has been drunk.

The characters at the heart of the story are perfectly drawn – and this includes the island of Skelsay too. Within just a few pages I felt as if I’d known them for years. Em and Zac are so identifiable for children and it is a stroke of genius to give both sexes a starring role as all children will find a character just right for them. I usually find children in fiction completely unrealistic creations but in Wilderness Wars the are such vivid and three dimensional people who feel completely real.

The plot is fabulous. It races along with a pitch perfect balance between the mundane elements of a child’s life, like homework, acting as a foil to dramatic and exciting events that take the breath away. There are some hugely pulse racing moments. I loved the way in which these events are set against the concept of nature, of how we exploit and manipulate nature and how we ought to be just that bit more respectful and careful in our actions. There’s so much to think about and enjoy in Wilderness Wars.

I’m finding it hard to praise Wilderness Wars highly enough. I think it is absolutely brilliant. If I were to write a children’s book, Wilderness Wars would be the one I would have liked to be able to put my name to. Fantastic!

Twelve-year-old Em moves with her family to the remote outer Hebridean island of Skelsay, where her father is overseeing a major construction project that will bring a luxury hotel and golf course to the uninhabited island. She's not happy about the move - she'll be leaving her friends behind in Glasgow, and despite her parents' assurances, there are no other girls her age amongst the families of the construction crew; the only other kid her age is an annoyingly clever boy called Zac.

But a lack of a social life is the least of her worries when a series of inexplicable events make her start to realise that there's something extraordinary going on... Something that could have serious, or even fatal consequences for the construction crew and their families. Somehow, the entire wilderness - nature itself - has turned against them. Birds, rodents, seals, even the weather and the sea itself have decided that humanity's encroachment on their domain will be tolerated no more...

With only a mercurial alliance with Zac to back her up, Em must convince the adults of the dangers. But who ever listens to a kid?

Wilderness Wars is an exciting eco-thriller that rattles along at a cracking pace. Em and Zac are great characters, with Em's little brother Struan providing the comic relief. The fantastic elements interweave nicely with the family drama, and the sense of encroaching disaster provides a real sense of dread. The book will also be a good conversation starter for discussions about our relationship with nature and our responsibilities as caretakers of this planet.

Wilderness Wars is a fiction, eco-adventure story book by Barbara Henderson for kids aged about 9-12.
It is a story about a girl of about 12 yrs old named Em who moves to an inhabited island when her dad’s work wants to build a holiday resort on Skelsay. As soon as they step foot on the island, disaster strikes. Seagulls and seals start attacking, extreme weather events are threatening them to leave Zac and Em must persuade the adults to leave but will they get the adults on their side, fast?
My favorite character is Zac because he is a determined and confident, adventurous person. My favorite event in the book is when Em is determined to prove that Erica is up to no good and does evil business. So, one night she follows Erica to an opening of a cave and takes a photo and runs back to her house she doesn't even have time to look at the photo herself. When she shows the photo to her parents they laugh, confused, she looks at the photo herself to only find Erica kissing Mr. Johnston....HER TEACHER!
My least favorite character, in this book is Em because I thought she was bossy, selfish and grumpy and mad at someone throughout most of the book. My least favorite event in the book is when the tidal waves attack them because I thought that entire chapter was rushed and you couldn't really imagine it like you could do for most of the book before that.
In conclusion I thought the book altogether was pretty good, but it could with more sinister events, more drama and a less rushed ending.
I would give it a 3/5-star rating.

WILDERNESS WARS BOOK REVIEW by Daood Farooq

The piece of literature is called wilderness wars it was made by Barbara Henderson the publisher is cranachan books. It is a multi-genre book mostly consisting of eco and nature as well as trying to survive.

The story is about a girl called Em who is roughly twelve years old who move to a remote Scottish island called the isle of skelsay where her dad is doing a building, but they aren't alone her mum, brother, sister and other families.

My personal favorite character was Zac as he was very funny and humorous and was the only one who believed Em.

My favorite event was when they got to the island and was tense and stuff was going wrong like when a house fell into the ocean and when they were viciously assaulted by seagulls.

However, my least favourite character was Mr. Johnston because he was very irresponsible and let the kids go explore on their own, he also got Mad at Em even though she saved everyone.

Also, my least favourite event was when they got back to Glasgow and the entire group was in the hospital recovering, the reason I did not like this was because it signifies the end of the book.

The theme I believe was showcased the best by the author was human's vs nature she explored the theme very well by showing damage on both the sides.

I will hereby rate this fine piece of literature an 8/10 I also recommend this book to ecologists and people who like animals and nature.

Wilderness wars book review

Wilderness wars is an exciting book written by Barbara Henderson and it was published by pocky hat in 2018. It has an overall theme of eco adventure as well as wildlife and a few other things too.

This book a girl named Em (who is just a bit older than me) her family and another handful of people move to an uninhabited island where they were going to build a resort, but things quickly begin to go wrong.

My favorite part was when a giant tsunami came, and the children had to try to persuade the adults to get to safety. I liked the character Em as she is brave and smart although she can be rather stubborn at times. My least favorite character on the other hand was dr Ian Pratt as he was just unkind and stubborn and only really cared about himself not the wildlife or the people on the island. My least favorite part of the book was when Mr. Johnston announced that he was leaving as I really liked his character and, in my opinion, it was sad to think that he was leaving but I do think that it was a good twist to the story line.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to people aged between 8 and 13 as I think it would interest that age group the most. Whether you're reading to your self, a parent reading to you or you're reading it in school I think that you would massively enjoy this book and out of 5 I would rate it a 4.5!

Wilderness wars is a thrilling nerve-racking book written by Barbara Henderson and was published in 2018 by cranachan publishing, otherwise known as pokey hat. It features a fiction genre with hints of eco adventure.

This book features a storyline with Em’s dad along with his construction team, were sent on a job to build a resort on an uninhabited Scottish Hebridean island named Skelsay. Over time Em and Zac (two of the oldest kids on the island brought along by their parents) begin to realize that the wilderness is starting to fight back many attacks have led them to realize that they must do something about it and warn everyone. To rid the island of the people once and for all a major attack takes place will they survive?

My favourite character in this book is Em i love her realistic views on the situation and braveness when she saves her dad from a near-death experience. I relate to her a lot because if my dad was in that situation I would be brave enough to save him too.

However, my favourite event is when Em finds out about the newspaper stating that Skelsay should stay uninhabited and that the people that are working on the resort should stop because they are ruining a beautiful island and endangering all the animals living on it.

On the contrary my least favourite character is Doctor Ian Pratt because he looks down on people and thinks he's better than everyone else. Another reason why I don't like him is because he doesn't care for the environment since he came to the island in a helicopter and not with everyone else in a boat.

Along the same lines as this my least favourite event when the seagulls attacked them, because i think they were just hungry for some chips.one of the main themes is humans fighting against the wilderness and eco-adventure.

Overall, this book was okay although I did love the cliff hanger. If you like action-adventure books you should consider perhaps reading this one.

Wilderness Wars is a gripping adventure story about respecting nature’s power and caring for the environment.

Em is not quite sure what to expect when she and her family move to the uninhabited Scottish island of Skelsay due to her father’s construction project. The harsh remoteness of the island seems at once exciting and terrifying at first. The families will live in a settlement of portacabins and the few children in the group will be taught together by the enthusiastic teacher Mr Johnston (look out for a special guest blog post from Barbara Henderson next week about writing the classroom scenes).

After quickly befriending Zac, who is the only other young person of the same age, Em begins to notice how the project to build a new luxury retreat seems to be facing more than the usual amount of setbacks and mishaps due to the island’s natural wildness. Could nature really be fighting back?

Em and Zac encounter a race against time to persuade their families of the danger they really face on Skelsay. Tension quickly mounts in the story as a series of disasters unfold, leading to an almost apocalyptic climax.

Wilderness Wars is an edge-of-your-seat exciting story with a strong environmental theme, making it an excellent addition to classroom libraries in Upper KS2

Wilderness wars is a book by Barbra Henderson, it was published by pokey hat in 2018.it is a relatively long story with the plot about a 12 year old girl called Em .her ,her family and many others are moving as part of a building team sent to build on a small uninhabited island of Skelsay. With her dad being one of the lead roles in the project. Within the project they are trying to build a luxury retreat into the wild with shooting ranges, pools, wild swimming and much much more. But this is just a theory a dream if you may put it because, NATURE FIGHTS BACK, whilst building they are blessed with freak weather and more.

Possibly my favorite character is Struan due to the fact that all he really dose is jump about with his army of kids and plays about aimlessly. Also, on that note my least favorite character is rather controversial pick of the bunch but Em herself, I just find her too typical of a character for my liking.

I am an advanced reader, but this book was easy to read which leads me to believe that this is a book for 8–12-year Olds. This theme I think is eco adventure with the odd horrifying thing happening here and there.

Overall, I think it is great book, and I highly recommend it read it.

BOOK REVIEW WILDERNESS WARS

Wilderness Wars is a book set on an uninhabited island called Skelsey. The book is written by Barbra Henderson and published by Pokey Hat. I would recommend this book for children aged 9-13 years old, Genre is fiction, and it was published in 2018. The first part is where Em must move to Skelsey so her dad can help build a luxury hotel there. Once they arrive lots of strange things start to happen, and the construction gets put behind schedule.

My Favorite character is Struan because he is the only one with a positive attitude and he is quite funny. I liked the part where Em fell and had to get airlifted to hospital because I don't really like Em and it was exciting.

My least favorite character HAS TO BE Em because she NEVER, NEVER has a positive attitude and she is a WIMP. Most of the book we just listen to her WINE she is the main reason I am giving this book 3 stars. I STRONGLY dislike her. My least favorite scene is when Struan got attacked by seals because as you know, Struan is my favorite character.

I liked the human vs nature theme because theme because i liked seeing a little bit of a battle going on in the book.

Overall, I quite liked the book, it was alright. I would rate it 3 stars out of five.

Wilderness Wars book review

Wilderness Wars is an exhilarating, adventurous book that can be scary and intense yet an exciting story. It is an exciting eco adventure that is suitable for all ages 8+.

The book is about the main character, Em, and her family moving to an uninhabited island called Skelsay for her dad and his work team to start a building project – a luxury hotel. But as they work, more things start to go wrong. The wilderness starts to fight back. Em and her friend, Zac, try to tell the parents what is happening, but they do not listen and think they are being silly.

My favourite character is Em because she is brave and courageous. She is caring and looks out for people. Although she can be a bit bossy and stern. My favourite event was when the tidal wave came across the island as it was scary, but thrilling at the same time. My least favourite character is Dr Ian Pratt as he is selfish, irritating, stuck up and annoying. My least favourite event was when Em’s dad almost died in the tidal wave as it was scary and nerve wracking. Some of the themes of this book are eco adventure, environment, humans vs. nature, and adventure.

Overall, this was a really good book, it had everything! It is exciting, intense, and scary. 4 stars!

My book report

Wilderness wars is a book about adventure and nature vs humans. It would be good for people who are interested in adventure and even if you don't it is still really good. The author of this book is Barbara Henderson, and the publisher is pokey hat. The plot is that she sadly needs to leave her house in Glasgow so that her dad can build a resort. The setting is on an island in Scotland. My favorite character would be Em the main character because there's a lot of information about her like she is very interesting and very brave when it comes to death or life situations Shes also very smart about what to do. My favorite event in the book would probably be when Em finds a friend and they get along well. My least favorite character is Struan because he didn't behave that much and didn't really have much information about him in the book. My least favorite event in the book is when a big Sunami happened because in my opinion it was very sad but i still wanted to read on. The theme in the book is the enviroment, wildlife and human vs nature. It was a bit sad but really exciting you should read it I would rate it 9/10

This book review will be about the wilderness wars. The author of this amazing book is Barbra Henderson, and it was published by cranachan publishing/pokey hat. The genre of the book is eco adventure and it is for all ages but mostly ages 9-13 years old.

Em moves to a little island off the coast of Scotland so her dad could build a resort, but the wilderness tries to get them off the island with a rat infestation and a big tidal wave hits the island and destroys all the resort and nearly kills Em and her dad.

Em is my favorite character because she is adventurous and sees things from another perspective.

My favorite part was when the big tidal wave destroyed the resort and Em and her dad nearly die.

My least favorite character is Mr. Jhonston because on the school trip he leaves the children by their self's and Em hurt herself.

My least favorite event was when Mr. Jhonston and Erica kissed in a cave and em was watching them.

One of the themes are human's vs nature because throughout the book nature is fighting with the main characters.

In my opinion it was very good and i recommend.

Wilderness Wars is a brilliant adventure story for children. It's aimed at young readers aged roughly 8-12 but of course this will vary depending on the skill of the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. A story about a family moving to live on a remote Scottish island narrated by a twelve year old girl is going to be exciting enough but there is so much more going on in this book. Right from the beginning, Em, her family and the others living on the island have all kinds of challenges thrown at them with wild weather, natural disasters and the island's wildlife seemingly working against them. Almost every chapter has some form of danger and drama in it and most end on mini cliffhangers. If it was a book you were reading aloud to a child, they would be absolutely begging for 'just one more chapter'! With lots of environmental issues to think about, plenty action and children working together to avert potential disaster, young readers are going to love this thrilling book - I know I did!

Wilderness wars by Barbara Henderson is a fiction book that was published in 2018 suitable for people aged 9-13.

The main event of this book is about a girl called Em who lived with her mum, dad, brother Struan and little sister in Glasgow. They then moved to an island in Scotland called Skelsay for Ems dad to build a luxury resort.

Em is my favourite character because I like her personality, she's adventurous and kind.

My favourite event was when Em and Zac went to the storage box. Then suddenly, they saw lots of dead mice, but some were still alive, and they started chasing Em and Zac out of the storage box to scare them away.

My least favourite character is Struan because he sounds annoying and makes fun of Em if she gets something wrong.

My least favourite event was when there was a tide away which is a big giant wave because it nearly swept everyone away.

The themes of the book are the environment, animals and adventure.

The book was good I would give it 4/10.

WILDERNESS WARS BOOK REVIEW

[contains spoilers]

Picture

A Barabara Henderson book that is a fiction and eco-adventure published by pokey hat in 2018 recommended for 9–13-year-olds.

The main point of this book is about a girl called Em who must move to a remote island in Scotland and meets Zac for the first time but when strange and occurring problems start happening after Em’s Dad starts plans to build a resort. Zac is my favorite character because he is smart, funny, and aware. An example of that is when the tidal wave is coming and Zac is the first character to spot it. My least favorite character is Em’s mum since she was bossy all the time. However, that is due to her being overprotective. At one point of the book Em has a dream and when she wakes up, she writes about I did not like that part because it is so unbelievable.

I think Barbara has proved that grown-ups should listen to respect the environment and as of that I would give it a 7/10

Wilderness wars by Barbara Henderson is a fantastic fiction eco-adventure published by pokey hat in 2018.

This story Is about a girl and her family who move to an island off the coast of Scotland to build a resort. But the wilderness starts fighting back and horrible accidents start happening. Personally, my favorite character is Zac because he is kind, and he loves animals and wildlife. He is also a little like me. However, my favorite event would have to be the tidal wave because it is very suspenseful.

Although on the other hand I hate Mr. Pratt because he seems like a jerk and someone who would be an annoying person. Although my least favorite event is when Erica and Mr. Johnston kiss because it just feels so weird. 3 main themes are humans vs nature, wildlife and things going wrong. I think the author did an excellent job of putting the message across that we need to treat the environment better.

Overall, I love wilderness wars because it is suspenseful and exciting.

I've just realised how hard it is to review a book aimed at a different age group! As an adult I can be a bit picky about books I've read, and this one had a few dropped stitches in it for me. But only a few... The mix of family relationships and the ongoing wilderness battle were well balanced. Children would enjoy being able to laugh at some of the weaknesses portrayed in some of the adult characters, and would find Em, Zac and Struan credible young people. As someone who prefers understatement, I did find it on the dramatic side but as it's aimed at 8-11s, it works as a romping story with a great theme. I think if I'd read it as a 10 year old, I would be giving it a full 5 stars. Especially good for classroom use, and very topical with schools focusing on environmental issues.

The title of this book is Wilderness wars, written by Barbra Henderson, this book is published by pokey hat and the genre is fiction.

The key event that happened in this book is when Em and Zac sawed the shape of a cawed cloud. Also, a big wave came to the island called Scelcy and everybody ran to a high place but only dad did not. My favorite character is Zac because he is kind, so mucher and has leadership. Also, my favorite event was when one day everything that happened was the same thing as Em’s story, even the big wave.

My least favorite character is Mr. Johnston because he is mean to everybody including Zac and Em and his teaching is boring. My least favorite event that happened is when is when a big wave came because Em’s dad’s hard work disappeared because of one wave.

You should read this book if you like to read adventure books or if you are 9to 13 years old

Wilderness Wars is the gorgeous new book from middle-grade author Barbara Henderson. Set on the remote (fictional) Scottish island of Skelsay, we accompany Em on her move to the island where everything is not as it seems. From the start everything goes wrong and Em knows that she needs the adults to see that some places are intended to be wild and not inhabited by humans.

I took this book on my train journey to Edinburgh recently and I was a bit disappointed when I reached my stop and had to stop reading! This book is wonderfully addictive with a fast pace. It encompasses family life (including irritating little brothers and a rogue hamster), friends (new AND a boy - boys are to be suspected), and the mysterious world of wildlife (unpredictable, potentially dangerous if tampered with).

I particularly enjoyed Em as a character. She is 12-years-old and I felt that for me, looking back, she is highly relatable. She has the curiosity and instinct of a child but she's also still learning about the world around her, particularly about the strange world of adults. The adults don't always take the time to listen, and, even worse, sometimes they kiss! (Ew.)

I have no teaching experience but I would love for this book to be part of the curriculum. It is an exceptional story but it also delivers important messages about conservation and how we have to look after the world around us. This goes for both adults and children. Specifically for us adults, maybe we should listen to children just a little more carefully, and learn to listen to our own intuition closely. It's not always about rationality and logic.

MY BOOK REVIEW

Wilderness Wars is an adventures book made in 2018. Its author is Barbara Henderson so if you like adventures books this is for you. This book is about a family exploring a mysterious remote island. But when they reach the island, they try to build a hotel that is too good to be true, but nature fights back! One of the best characters is Zac because of his adventures ideas. And my least favorite character is Struan because he's loud and annoying. One of the best events in my opinion is when Struan got attacked by seals because it was hilarious. And the saddest event was when the tidal wave hit the island because there were some sad scenes. All in all, it is a fantastic book about wildlife so if you don't buy it, you're missing out.

My Book Review – Wilderness wars

I think wilderness wars was a good and exciting book for boys or girls to read. It’s aimed at around 8 – 13-year-olds but it mostly depends on your reading level.

It’s about a girl called Em who goes to an uninhabited island off the shores of Scotland. The island is called Skelsay, and it has a lot of wildlife and is a beautiful place. When Em finds out that Ian Pratt, a rich person who destroys the environment, is planning to destroy the natural features of Skelsay to build a resort, she gathers up all the kids and plans to stop him. But when Em starts to write a book about everything that's happening, it all goes wrong...

WILDERNESS WARS BOOK REVIEW

I am doing a book review on Wilderness Wars, the author is Barbara Henderson, and it was published in 2018 by Pokey hat and cranachah publishing. The genre for this book is eco Adventure and is for all ages but mostly 9-13 years old.

The book is about a 12-year-old girl that moved to a Scottish island with her family for her dad's work. The setting is very outdorsay and mostly in nature. The plot is very attention grabbing and once you start you don't want to stop.

My favorite character was Em as she is very adventurist and risk-taking person. She also helps people and is very kind. However, my favorite event is when they caught all the mice and saved their food.

My least favorite character was Ems mum because she wasn't talked about much and didn't have much to do with anything. Contrary to my least favorite event was when the tidal wave came and Em and her dad nearly died.

There were 5 main themes in this book that include adventure, environment, conflict, animals in wildlife, human's vs nature and meany more.

I really liked the book. Every time we finished a chapter I wanted to read more and i would definitely recommend this book.
