Exposing the Rejection Mindset by Mark DeJesus

Read it if you:

✔️Struggle with people pleasing or performance based living
✔️Have unhealed rejection wounds
✔️Want to see life through eyes of opportunity and abundance, not scarcity or fear of rejection
✔️Want to be at peace with who God made you
✔️Want to understand better why people operate in hurtful ways sometimes. There’s unhealed hurt in us all.

Mark’s teachings, whether in book format or podcast, have been an incredible tool for me in many ways. The way he writes, teaches, and shares vulnerably always resonates with me, gently opening my eyes to areas in my heart that need healing. One thing that he talks about in this book that really stuck out to me is being rejected vs taking on the rejection mindset. We will be rejected in life, but we don’t have to live under its mindset.

Main takeaway: We were meant to live in freedom, in God’s love as His children. We were made to be who God created us to be. Reading this book helped me step closer to that. It is filled with truth and love in a safe way that says: you can do this, you can overcome.

Suffering through rejection?

This book had great insight how we allow rejection to take over areas of our lives. I took full advantage of the prayers & took the time to answer all the questions. I may not be completely free but I am on my way. I have noticed times now I will stop myself knowing I am thinking like a victim & change my thoughts to line up with God’s words. Progress is slow but happening!

Empowering indeed!

I searched for the longest of time why certain areas of my life where stagnant and this book beautifully unveiled what I had been dealing with from the root.
I really loved how I was able to pin point areas of my life where I've faced rejection, notice patterns that accumulated because of it and pray that the Lord would heal me from those wounds.

Although it's still a journey, it's good to know who and what you're fighting. The battle ground has been leveled and I know I shall be victorious.

This book essentially describes psychological problems in "Christianese". For example, DeJesus talks about a "spirit of rejection". Despite the Christian language, the book gets the psychology correct to my understanding. However, DeJesus is not a psychologist, therapist, or expert of any kind. This places him in a bit of an odd position in writing this book. As I understand it, he is a former pastor who now leads a ministry related to what he talks about in the book.

DeJesus makes some odd connections, such as saying a verse in the Bible is talking about bone marrow. He relates a number of psychological problems to specific physical ailments, such as abandonment to respiratory illness (as I recall). I am not aware of any evidence for these connections and no support is provided.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the book in my opinion is its length. The book is over 350 pages, and the pages significantly larger that the average book. It seems to me that DeJesus likely could have communicated the information more concisely. That said, the book does sound wordy or redundant.

The other biggest weaknesses in the book is that I feel it is short on help on improving in the problem areas described. DeJesus spends a lot of time describing each problem thoroughly. But I felt that the solutions generally amounted to "don't do it anymore". Being aware of a problem is certainly the first step in improving upon it. However any further attempt to help in the book came across as intangible words.

Overall, "Exposing the Mindset of Rejection" isn't a terrible book. I just believe there are other better books out there which cover similar ground but which are briefer, more helpful, and written by an expert in the field (psychologist/therapist).
