Dr. Luciana Perez thought she hit the jackpot when she landed the position at the Shutter Lake Medical Clinic. Until her friend Sylvia Cole is murdered and the authorities come calling, certain that Luciana has more information about the crime. But Luciana only knows Sylvia had secrets she wasn’t inclined to share. Secrets that had Sylvia seriously worried. Secrets someone was willing to kill to keep buried. Every day that the killer isn’t found, Luciana’s fear tightens like a noose around her neck: fear of her own secrets being exposed, fear of becoming the next victim, and fear that the murderer will irrevocably shatter the idyllic peace and security of their beautiful town.
BREAKDOWN Book 4, what she knew, is part of a groundbreaking, fast paced 4-book suspense series that will keep you turning pages until the end. Advance reviews describe BREAKDOWN as “unique,” “brilliant” and “the best series of the year.” The complete series includes the dead girl by Debra Webb, so many secrets by Vicki Hinze, all the lies by Peggy Webb and what she knew by Regan Black. You’ll want all four books in the thrilling BREAKDOWN series!
Regan Black, a USA Today bestselling author, writes award-winning, action-packed romantic novels featuring kick-butt heroines and the sexy heroes who fall in love with them. She and her husband currently enjoy the empty-nest life in the South Carolina Lowcountry where the rich blend of legend, romance, and history fuels her imagination.
This is the 4th and final installation of a marvelous series faturing four strong women who come together to find a killer in their peaceful little town.
A businesswoman was strangled in her home, a foreign exchange student has disappeared and an FBI Agent has disappeared.
Dr. Luciano Perez was a close friend of the murdered woman. Luciano, like so many of the residents, has deep, dark secrets. Fear fills her thinking of her secrets being exposed, but if she doesn't do something, she may be the next victim.
It's fast-paced as has all the installments have been filled with unforgettable characters. The entire series has been filled with secrets and lies, twists and turns.
I highly recommend starting with the very first of this series ... you won't be sorry!
In the end I've given each of the books in the 4 book series 2 stars. However, it was very tempting to 1 star all of them.
On price alone, $3.99/book, the four book series comes in at $16 - not even counting the four prequel novellas that I passed on. It is not worth it...thank goodness I read it via Kindle Unlimited.
Considering that the four books contained enough filler to fill the bakery in this novel...you know high calorie (I mean word count), no nutritional content (I mean no plot or character development). I don't give stars to filler...I take stars away.
It seemed like the primary plot was what the characters were eating. Each of the books focused on this. The secondary plot was everyone and I mean every single character had secrets. It was over the top like a bad soap opera. They didn't even feel like red herrings, it just felt like uninteresting filler. And last and treated like a minor subplot was the murder investigation.
On top of that I found that pretending that because the murder victim was trying to stop human trafficking it made her a good character. No, she was a blackmailing b*tch who used her cleaning service to go through her clients private files and computers to gather dirt and then blackmail them. She was not a good person. This info didn't fall into her hands. She searched through houses looking for dirt so she could blackmail people. It was hard to care about her.
All four writers can write. In fact I was amazed at how much filler I had to skim through looking for something interesting. Good writing does not create a book. An interesting story written well creates a book. This could have been an interesting story if it was one book, contained only the pertinent secrets and focused on human trafficking and finding the murderer. However, due to the current marketing ploy of taking a story, dividing it up into four volumes and bloating the volumes with filler, and then overcharging for each volume (as if the non interesting volume was a book) this series was a total fail. It used to be a book went through numerous edits to keep the story moving. You know, removing superfluous information. This series appears to have done the opposite.
I can not recommend this series.
And you can figure out the bad person in book #1; you just have to endure a ton of **** to get your guess confirmed.
What She Knew is the final book from the exciting Breakdown series. I have enjoyed this series and Regan Black does not disappoint. This time the reader is introduced to Dr Luciana Perez, who gets involved in the murder investigation of her friend. What She Knew concludes the Breakdown series perfectly and unexpectedly. I like how the authors formatted this series and would love and hope they will contribute another one like this in the future. 5 stars. I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
What an epic finish! I loved this story, Ana was amazing. Besides a great mystery this story was such an amazing tale of true friendship. Loved!
I’m going to take my initial claim about Sylvia. She may have been a bit of a...well you get it. But her loyalty to her staff and to human trafficking was heroic!
The Breakdown Series is a 4-part suspense series by 4 different authors, each focusing on a different leading woman whose job has the necessary connections to help in finding the truth behind the murder of one of their own. Each woman has a powerful job that gives them an edge with information and secrets hidden in this quaint community. As a cop, school principal/psychologist, an investigative reporter, and a doctor they each have a skill set that can contribute to solving the crime and bringing a killer to justice.
This 4-part series is an awesome read. The stories flow seamlessly from one book to the next to where you cannot even tell they are written by 4 different authors. They fit together that well.
WHAT A BRILLIANT SERIES! The ending will blow you away! These 4 authors did an amazing job of plotting out this epic whodunit. You can guess all you want but you will not see the killer coming. These ladies intertwined their heroines, circumstances, and storylines perfectly. The air of mystery and gripping suspense is some of the best ever! I cannot say enough about these 4 books. You do not want to pass them by.
The fourth and final book in the series, What She Knew by Regan Black definitely packs a punch. The puzzle pieces are finally put together and all the secrets and lies exposed. Will this quaint idyllic community ever be the same when all is revealed? This final book wraps up the murder investigation of Sylvia Cole and missing persons' search for Josie and the FBI agent. There is a shocking conclusion you will not see coming.
In this installment, Laney and the chief are still running down leads, putting the pressure on certain residents who know more than they are willing to share, Dana is trying to be the calm in the storm, helping everyone get through this troubling time, Julia and her FBI friend are still on the hunt, tracking leads, for the missing young girl, Josie and his partner; both are now fearing the worst. But in this book, it focuses on Dr. Luciana ‘Ana’ Perez and the secrets she holds may be the key to cracking the case wide open. Sylvia was her dear friend and she confided in Ana, not specifics, but generalities with hidden evidence to back it up; should anything happen to her. Since her murder, Ana cannot help but feel that her world is about to come crashing down. Aside from Sylvia’s secrets, she holds some of her own, terrible ones that could mean her death if they are exposed or she is found. Ones that haunt her, nightmares that never leave her alone, and could cause her to run…again. When an attempt on her life is made, is it due to what she knows or has her past found her at last? To put all the pieces of this tragic event in place and to find the killer she has to come forward and share what she knows before she is next on the list. When all the secrets and lies are exposed and the killer is named, will this friendly little town ever be the same?
The series includes – The Dead Girl by Debra Webb, So Many Secrets by Vicki Hinze, All the Lies by Peggy Webb and What She Knew by Regan Black. You will want to read each book in the series in order.
*I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of these books by the authors with no obligation to read/review. I am voluntarily reading this series and providing my honest reviews for each book. The thoughts are opinions expressed are completely my own.
When Dr. Luciana Perez's friend Sylvia Cole is murdered, she finds herself sliding back in time to a place that was filled with danger and fear, a place in her past that could destroy her and the idyllic peace and security in the beautiful town of Shutter Lake. As the authorities come looking to her for answers that they are sure she has, Luciana fears that her friends murder might be tied to the secrets of Luciana's own terrorizing past.
This fast paced, page turning mystery is the forth and final book in the new 4 book min-series BREAKDOWN. Regan adds her own flavor to this exciting new mini series with her book that is distinctly hew own voice as she tells of the disturbing and horrific secrets of her characters past and her fight to find justice. I hope you enjoy the entire series and the four short stories bye each author that introduces their characters.
My overview of the entire series is one of fascination, as I cannot fathom how four different authors can put together one story in four different parts like this. I know authors have enjoyed doing collaborations such as these, but to now I have mostly seen only romance series where each author takes on a different character and his/her relationship. They build a bit on the previous stories. But to do a murder suspense series requires an entirely different kind of outlining and mapping to be successful.
Each book is told from a different point-of-view of one of four female friends, though you get a few peeks into the worlds of others as well. Each of these people have moved to Shutter Lake, hoping to find some peace from a traumatic past. And then the unthinkable happens, setting them and the entire town on edge. Secrets are around every corner. You would think that in a small town, everyone would know everyone else's business and secrets would be difficult to maintain, but not the case here. The more they know, the less they know. It's intriguing to read through and uncover the secrets along with the characters.
And even if you think you know what all of the secrets are or who did what, you don't really know. The innocent victim isn't as innocent as one would like to think. Twists and turns are obstacles down many of the paths and will keep you bumping the pages forward as quickly as you can through all four of these books. I think it would make for a great miniseries.
My review of this particular title:
Dr. Ana is the main perspective of this final installment of the series. Just like everyone else, she has her owns secrets that have yet to be revealed, and hers seem to be the most sinister of all. Another body is found and the world seems to be crashing down on this small town. It almost makes my head spin. So many more plots and twists round out this series. This was yet another quick read. I honestly read the entire series in just two days.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
What She Knew is the fourth and final instalment in the Breakdown suspense mini-series, and we finally get answers to all the questions built up over the other three books – who killed Sylvia Cole and why? What happened to the missing girl and FBI Agent investigating her disappearance?
It turns out that I had correctly guessed the identity of Sylvia’s killer, although I hadnt worked out the motive. For a picturesque town like Shutter Lake, a great number of its residents were hiding some pretty dark secrets. Our heroine for this book is Dr Luciana Perez, known as Ana. She hides the darkest secret of them all, and in the course of helping uncover the identity of Sylvia’s killer – she and Sylvia were close friends and Sylvia had confided in her about what she’d been investigating in the lead up to her death – Ana’s own painful secret about her past comes out. She’s ready to flee, but Deputy Laney Holt convinces her not to.
It’s with Ana’s determination and smarts that the killer is uncovered, but not before she is harmed in the process. However, the truth is uncovered in the end, and while everyone’s secrets have come out, it’s not to the whole town but to a chosen few.
While there were a few small things that didn’t gel for me in this book – there was a hint of a romantic attachment for Ana to a man featured heavily in the previous books that I didn’t see coming and didn’t care for at all, and once again some of the interactions between the female leads felt more like strangers than close friends – all up, I really enjoyed this series. If you like mysteries, you should enjoy this series.
A breathtaking ending to the intense Breakdown serial novel, this time in the limelight Dr. Luciana Perez who's dark and dangerous, terrifying history seems to be tied into the murders happening at the small town of Shutter Lake. While the whole town is trying to hold it together with the grief for Sylvia, another body is found in the lake, there is an attack towards Dr. Perez, and the plot thickens. I absolutely loved how the author built up the reveal of Dr. Luciana Perez past. It holds the reader on their toes and clued to the story. The tale has several points of views as the mystery starts to unravel and the truth about Sylvia's odd action and even the blackmailing habits gets a new meaning and the disturbing truth is discovered. The built up for the story has been intense, and the four separate points of views serial novel are well done, with nearly seamless continues from one installment to the other as the heroine and the author writing about her changes. Regan Black takes all the clues, secrets, and lies and builds up a riveting finale to the mystery that has rocked the foundation of the Shutter Lake and its intriguing habitats. A fascinating, puzzling, alluring murder mystery comes to a gripping end. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
This is Book #4 and the final book in the Breakdown series and you will absolutely want all of the books in the series. This one continues the saga of the tension in the small town of Shutter Lake after the murder of Sylvia Cole. Laney is still trying to solve the murder. Dana is trying to keep everyone calm. Julia is still trying to find the missing FBI agent who had come to the town. This book focuses on Dr. Ana Perez and the secrets that she holds that may be the key to the murder of Sylvia and the disappearance of one of her workers, The book is absorbing with realistic details grabbed from recent horrifying headlines. Readers of thrillers and suspense will not want to miss this series, and the conclusion is not only satisfying...it’s an ah-ha moment.

Sylvia Cole is dead, and the small, idyllic town of Shutter Lake is in turmoil. This episode focuses on Dr. Luciana Perez, Shutter Lakes Medical Center’s director. As the town’s doctor, she’s in the unique position to be able to search out more of the town’s secrets. With her past and being a close friend of Sylvia’s, maybe she will find the biggest secret of all, but can she do so without exposing her own secrets? If she does, will it cost her the living she’s made in this once peaceful town or possibly even her own life?
As more secrets are unraveled and the truth is revealed, in the wake of more broken hearts and families, the town will persevere, and friendships will grow stronger. Even when the darkness is exposed, there’s lightness to be found.
This is the final episode of this riveting tale of murder and mystery. Although the truth is discovered in this story, you will still be kept at the edge of your seat until the end. This story, like the rest, is fast paced and will keep your attention from start to finish. This was a fantastic end to this very engrossing saga. I strongly recommend this very engaging series! You won’t be sorry!!
What an ending! Sylvia's killer is finally revealed and while I wasn't sure who I had done it, I definitely didn't suspect this person! We got some closure and answers to many questions. I really liked Ana and didn't expect her backstory/secret. She knows more than she has told, but how much can she say without exposing herself?
This mini series was incredibly enjoyable. I liked the 4 heroines, and the story flowed seamlessly between the 4 authors. There was a lot of suspense and questions that kept me hooked from page 1 to the very last word. I hope these authors continue with this concept!
*I received an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
What an ending to the Breakdown series! Dr. Ana Perez knew that her friend Sylvia was keeping secrets, and that she had been doing some investigating on her own before her murder. Dr. Perez has her own dark secret that is threatening to destroy the perfect life she has created in Shutter Lake. This book will let you know who murdered Sylvia and why.
This is a fast paced series that keeps you intrigued through all four books including the novellas. A great concept to have four different authors each write one of the books with a female lead character, but they flow from one book to the next seamlessly. A great series!
What She Knew by Regan Black is the fourth book in the Breakdown series. The setting for all four books is the idyllic town of Shutter Lake and centers around the murder of Sylvia Cole. Four friends, Dana, Laney, Julie, and Ana work to solve the murder. Doctor Ana Perez is the main protagonist in the fourth book, What She Knew. Ana uses her past experience and knowledge of human trafficking to aid the Shutter police department in solving the murder. This series is a suspenseful read from the first book to the last.
What She Knew by Regan Black is the fourth and concluding book in the Breakdown series. It is an excellent book. Each book in the series was written by a different author and focused on a murder which happened in the first book, although a couple of more were added in the subsequent books. The ending was so good. Never once did I suspect the identity of the killer. Even though these books were written by four different authors, it flowed seamlessly from one to the other. Hope these authors consider doing this again!
This last book was so good. I was pleased I persevered and read entire series. A whole new crime depicted in this series and one that I am not familiar with. I know human trafficking existed and makes one wonder just who to trust. Was disappointed that the blackmail that Sylvie was not explained. It was such a red herring. I wonder this because Sylvie was in a way not unlike her father to use these people for financial gain and favours. In one way she was a hero and another a self serving bitch.
Thought the concept of telling each woman's story in her own book while making it a series was great. But...Dr. Perez' story had holes. She only saw Sylvia through rose colored glasses. Never grasping the blackmailing. It was hard to believe she would not talk to her friend. The police woman. We are to believe she was scared but then tried go get into someone else's office to steal. Frustrated with how she made Sylvia's mother lay everything out. Then she had to be the one to investigate the murder. It wasn't working for me.
This series is more than just amazing! These books will have you lost from reality into each story, in each character and trying to figure it out before the end. Each book has a different author, which is remarkable how well they collaborated the series and makes for a great one at that! This is a set that you have to read for yourself to understand just how well these are written and will pull you in from start to end!
The fourth and final book in the “Breakdown Series,” focuses on Dr. Luciana (Ana), Perez and her perspective. She comes to Shutter Lake as the primary physician of the clinic. Her friends, Julia, Laney, and Dana, surround her with love as she learns of the killer and how it relates to her previous life. The murder is solved by her adeptness and desire to end the secrets. Ana becomes a target. A nail biter until the end. A great read by author Regan Black.
The characters in this series all come from some type of violence. They each get a book of their own. The resolution of the murder is revealed in the last book of the series. I read each one and was surprised by the identity of the killer. There are a few threads left one villain is still at large but all in all a satisfying series.
The final book in the Breakdown series, and it was a wonderful conclusion to the previous books. I did figure it out before it was reveiled in the book whom the guiltly party. Overall this was a excellent series that kept you reading until you got to the very end. I would certainly recommend it to others
You have to read the ending to this series! It is so inspiring. What is friendship? Read this fascinating book to find out. Friendship is the true nature of this series. There are many types of it but that between strong women is the most inspiring! Who was the killer? Find out in this in this excellent book. Highly recommended.
Great ending. It shows what can happen when you have great friends.I'm sure the 4 of them will do even greater things in the future. No more secrets between them. Just the way friendships should be. I hope another book gets written just to see how everyone is getting on in this beautiful town
The four books in the Breakdown series follows the same crime, but each from the point of view and actions of the 4 good friends. I found this series to be hard to put down! The character development was great, the plot was great, and the writing was great. If these authors have another series, I won't miss it!
Great ending for a terrific storyline, small town drama, gossip and smalltown hierarchy. The Rich Billionaire founder of this idyllic small town was a prime example of how power and privilege can mask a multitude of sins. Great storyline and very realistic ending
This series is written by four different writers, with each book featuring a different character. I read the first book because Debra Webb wrote it, and I always enjoy her books. But the series comes off as disjointed. It was one of those that you read all just to finish them, not because you really enjoying it.
While i enjoyed the storyline I am not a fan of the style where 4 different authors each tell the story from a different character's perspective. It cut the continuity. It also had characters actually impeding the investigation. I appreciate the experiment. Fell into the "didn't work" category for me.
I understand the need for different voices for different people, but it seemed a little drawn out. I felt a little sorry for Ana having to come face-to-face with her past.
