She married the novelist Alberto Moravia in 1941, and through him she met many of the leading Italian thinkers and writers of the day as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Dario Bellezza, Sandro Penna, Attilio Bertolucci, Umberto Saba and many others.

History continues…
'With the present book, I who was born at a time of certain horror (in our 20th Century), I wanted to leave a documented testimony of my direct experience of the Second World War, exposing it as an extreme and bloody example of the total body of history through time. Here is History to you. Just the way it is and just the way we contributed to make it.'
As I was on the verge of embarking on my first foray into Natalia Ginzburg’s work – All Our Yesterdays, a family novel in the context of the Second World War - I took her good friend Elsa Morante’s monumental 1974 novel History (La Storia) from the shelf again, a brick of a novel which I read about fifteen years ago and which left a deep impression on me.
The edition I once got as a birthday present doesn’t have a preface or post-scriptum, so I skimmed through one I found online, written by Lily Tuck (who wrote a biography on Elsa Morante, Woman of Rome: A Life of Elsa Morante), which, together with Markus's fine review, disclosed a few interesting facts on the reception and overwhelming success of the novel in Italy as well as on Elsa Morante’s intentions for writing it - such as Morante’s request the original would be issued as a paperback so her novel would be affordable for the general public and The New York Times which reported how ‘For the first time since anyone can remember, people in railroad compartments and espresso bars discuss the book – the Morante novel – rather than the soccer championship or latest scandal. The critics write endlessly about the meaning of La Storia, and the reasons for the exceptional stir it is causing’ - all the more a notable feat as the novel wasn’t exactly the next episode in a much anticipated series like Rowling managed with Harry Potter but a lengthy, gruesome and horrifying war novel, in which each chapter is preceded by sec headline-like outlines of the historical events in synchronicity with the lives of the characters, the course of the war and its aftermath until 1961.
Mostly set in Rome during and shortly after the Second World War (1941-1947), History is a poignant book of epic allure about boundless motherly love, the complexity of family ties, identity, race, violence, war and loss. Partly based on her own war experiences, the Italian novelist Elsa Morante (1912-1985) describes the life of Ida Mancuzo née Ramundo, a widowed elementary school teacher living in Rome with her two sons. When Useppe is born in 1941 after Ida got raped by a German soldier, her son Nino is fifteen. Their lives involuntarily sway along on the ruthless waves of the Second World War. Nino joins the resistance and is a permanent source of unrest and worry for Ida. Taking care of the little Useppe, a sickly but precocious and cheerful child, forces her to hold her ground in utterly precarious circumstances - homeless in a city that is being bombed, where food and shelter are scarce and each day is a struggle for survival. As a partly-Jewish woman (like Morante herself), Ida also struggles with the terrifying doom of discovery and deportation, a vexing anxiety she cannot share with anyone for fear of being turned in.
Yet in all the horror and bleakness Morante – who considered herself first and foremost a poet – unapologetically weaves poetry through the narrative and into those arduous lives of Ida, Nino and Useppe – even if the stars are the only thing that is left, they will continue to bring a sparkle of brightness in the deepest despair.
'Of every real action, indifferent, difficult or risky, movement is a natural element. But in contrast to the unnatural irreality of a total, monotonous, debilitating, stupid and pointless accident, the stars would also stand still, according to him...'
Seemingly she later felt the need to justify her use of such a poetical, florid style in the context of war, violence, oppression and suffering: 'Since I am by nature a poet, I could not do anything else but a work of poetry. And in view of this, experience has taught me that, unfortunately, for many, even poetry can be used as an alibi. As if poetry should content itself with its own beauty, as if it were only an elegant arabesque designed on paper. So I must warn you that this book, before it is a work of poetry, first, must be an act of accusation and a prayer.'
Persecution, injustice, madness and death ultimately lead to a heart-breaking, tragic end, which haunted me for a long time. Told chronologically, from the straightforward narrative perspective of an eye witness, History approximates the feel of a classic, realistic 19th century novel, while the Roman setting, the character of Ida and the atmosphere reminded me of Roberto Rossellini’s illustrious (and gut-wrenching) 1945 film Roma, città aperta.
It is hard to imagine that the novel was criticised by some voices of the Italian left for finding not enough rage against the oppressors in it. This is an angry, raw, powerful and devastating novel on how History with a capital H affect the lives of ordinary people, a novel which is not unlikely to infuriate the reader, not leaving any illusion on human nature in its shocking depiction of the theme of the violent abuse of power versus the powerless and even less on the emptiness of political ideologies of whatever penchant. Perhaps Morante’s main purpose with the novel was to raise awareness more than simply denounce: 'My novel ‘History’ wants to be an accusation against all the fascisms of the world. And, nevertheless, an urgent and desperate question, addressed to everyone for a possibly common awakening.’ - which reminded me very much of the fierce words of the Flemish writer Louis Paul Boon (in My Little War): KICK PEOPLE HARD TILL THEY GET A CONSCIENCE. Like some other reviewers point out here, I won’t deny it is a slow and lengthy read and the narrative at times feels long-winding and messy, but as to kicking one a conscience, if this fictional account doesn’t manage, I wouldn’t know which one would. I think I can see why the 100 writers selected from 54 countries to nominate the ‘100 most meaningful books’ of all time (in 2002) chose to put Morante’s novel on the list and not one of her husband Alberto Moravia (Unlike the literary critic Pieter Steinz, who in his Lezen Etcetera: Gids voor de wereldliteratuur mentions ‘History’ only sidelong, while Moravia together with 415 other authors is granted his own lemma and half a page, and not Morante).
All the seeds failed, except one. I don’t know what it is, but it is probably a flower and not a weed

Re-reading these words, which close the novel, a (cited as anonymous) quote from the prison letters of Antonio Gramsci, made me ponder on the lasting relevance of Morante’s novel in current times. The quote reminded me of how a journalist recently exposed how Gramsci’s thoughts on cultural hegemony are shamelessly recuperated by a far right youth movement in my country to make their spine-chilling ideas salonfähig. Instead of letting them poison the hearts and minds, it is good to remember we can turn to books and testimonies like Morante’s which might inspire to stay vigilant and continue to believe in the possibility of flowers. Toen De geschiedenis in 1974 verscheen, werd het in Italië uitgeroepen tot de roman van de eeuw. Het is een aangrijpend boek van epische allure over grenzeloze moederliefde, de complexiteit van familiebanden, oorlog en verlies. Deels op haar eigen oorlogservaringen gebaseerd, beschrijft Morante het leven van Ida Mancuzo, een weduwe die tijdens de jaren dertig en veertig in Rome woont met haar twee zonen. Wanneer Useppe in 1941 geboren wordt, is zoon Nino vijftien. Hun levens deinen onwillekeurig mee op de meedogenloze golven van de grote Geschiedenis en de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Nino treedt toe tot het verzet en vormt voor Ida een permanente bron van onrust. “Ora nella mente stolida e malcresciuta di quella donnetta, mentre correva a precipizio per il suo piccolo alloggio, ruotarono anche le scene della storia umana (la Storia) che essa percepí come le spire multiple di un assassinio interminabile.”
Finisco questo romanzo ed è la terza volta che lo rileggo senza stancarmene, anzi…
Come Cesare Garboli, scrive in questa edizione di vent’anni fa, anch’io sto cercando di raccogliere le idee e non è facile perché colpisce al cuore anche alla sua seconda rilettura.
C’è una questione che, tuttavia, solo oggi mi appare chiara e lampante: questa non è solo la storia di Ida, di Nino e di Useppe; non è neppure solo una storia che come un tassello s’inserisce nel grande quadro di quell’altra Storia che si può fregiare con una lettera maiuscola.
Oggi comprendo maggiormente come la Morante abbia voluto parlare di ciò che è realtà. Contrariamente a ciò che si possa pensare non sono i grandi avvenimenti ad essere reali.
Abbiamo conoscenza (più o meno) di ciò che succede nel mondo ma quella che viviamo come realtà è ciò che ci circonda più da vicino.
Ogni capitolo si apre con una cronologia degli avvenimenti storici in Europa: un elenco asettico di fatti che nella vita di un quartiere romano sono delle semplici voci (la radio ha detto che… si dice che…). Le decisioni, le grande firme, i proclami sono lontani nella loro essenza e quello che una persona può saperne sono le conseguenze nella quotidiana sopravvivenza.

Non per gli intellettuali ma per la gente comune che vive oppressa dalla quella Storia maiuscola: ecco a chi è dedicato questo libro
Una cronaca di quartiere dove i protagonisti esemplificano atteggiamenti, pensieri e reazioni molto comuni.
Ida è una donnetta che si muove tra queste pagine come uno spettro.
Combatte contro antiche e nuove paure e riflette nei suoi sogni tutta la disperazione della sua estrema solitudine. Se nella vita reale passa rasente ai muri e cerca di essere invisibile, nella dimensione onirica è completamente invischiata nel pericolo.
Così il terrore notturno, appena spunta il sole si tramuta in uno stato di costante ansia nel vivere.
La tragicità è un arco che si tende fin dalle prime righe e non si conclude neppure con l’ultima lasciata in sospeso con dei puntini che non assolvono il compito di dare un finale che non c’è.
Tuttavia, la speranza, secondo me, non è assente ma rappresentata dal mondo animale: una dimensione fantastica che vede cani, gatti e uccelli dotati di intelligenza, elementi umanizzati, di difesa e capaci di comunicare.
Useppe, anima innocente e colui che sente queste voci e il canto degli uccellini che ripetono « È uno scherzo uno scherzo tutto uno scherzo! » sono il sostegno in un mondo drammatico ed incomprensibile nel suo volersi caparbiamente autodistruggere.
La voce narrante non è neutrale ma dà l’idea di aver visto e conosciuto i protagonisti e calandosi nei panni di un testimone, pur nel suo viaggio tra reale e fantastico, diventa credibile.
Ida paralizzata dal terrore trova il suo opposto nel primo figlio Nino sprezzante di ogni pericolo ed autorità imposta.
Entrambi, però, hanno bisogno dell’ingenuità di Useppe: lo sguardo innocente di chi sa guardare al mondo con altri occhi.
Mussolini un commediante, Hitler un necrofilo: così sono smitizzati i cosiddetti Grandi della Storia che diventano figure infime e ridicole.
Un romanzo di emozioni forti: rabbia, paura, ansia, vergogna, gioia, dolore, meraviglia.
Gli anni atroci della guerra percuotono la popolazione già stremata da anni di cieca dittatura.
Quando la guerra finisce, tuttavia, la pace firmata sui trattati internazionali non coincide con la storia – quella vera- della povera gente che vive ancora nel dolore e di pace non ne trova.
Comincia, quindi, un corteo di dolori interiori, corpi mutilati, identità andate a pezzi.
«Uno scandalo che continua da diecimila anni» e se qualcosa la Storia ci ha insegnato è che continua,

«La guerra è stata una commedia, a’ mà!» E si alzò in piedi. Cosí denudato, moro, dentro la stanzuccia accaldata e misera, pareva un eroe: «Ma la commedia non è finita!» aggiunse, minacciosamente. (…) D’un tratto si esilarò. Quest’idea di sfasciare pareva mettergli addosso un’allegria straordinaria: «E vi credete pure di farci tornare alla scuola!» riprese, parlando italiano civile apposta con l’intenzione di sfottere sua madre, «il latino scritto il latino orale la storia e la matematica... la geografia... La geografia, io me la vado a studià sur posto. La Storia, è una commedia loro, che ha da finí! NOI gliela famo finí! E la matematica... Lo sai qual è il numero che piú mi piace a’ mà? È lo ZERO!... (…)«Noi siamo la prima generazione dell’inizio!» ripigliò, al colmo dell’enfasi, «noi siamo la rivoluzione atomica! Noi le armi non le deponiamo a’ mà! LORO... loro... loro...
«LORO nun lo sanno, a’ mà, quant’è bella la vita!»
Finisco questo romanzo ed è la terza volta che lo rileggo senza stancarmene, anzi…

Useppe, anima innocente e colui che sente queste voci e il canto degli uccellini che ripetono « È uno scherzo uno scherzo tutto uno scherzo! » sono il sostegno in un mondo drammatico ed incomprensibile nel suo volersi caparbiamente autodistruggere.
La voce narrante non è neutrale ma dà l’idea di aver visto e conosciuto i protagonisti e calandosi nei panni di un testimone, pur nel suo viaggio tra reale e fantastico, diventa credibile.
Ida paralizzata dal terrore trova il suo opposto nel primo figlio Nino sprezzante di ogni pericolo ed autorità imposta.
Entrambi, però, hanno bisogno dell’ingenuità di Useppe: lo sguardo innocente di chi sa guardare al mondo con altri occhi.
Mussolini un commediante, Hitler un necrofilo: così sono smitizzati i cosiddetti Grandi della Storia che diventano figure infime e ridicole.
Un romanzo di emozioni forti: rabbia, paura, ansia, vergogna, gioia, dolore, meraviglia.
Gli anni atroci della guerra percuotono la popolazione già stremata da anni di cieca dittatura.
Quando la guerra finisce, tuttavia, la pace firmata sui trattati internazionali non coincide con la storia – quella vera- della povera gente che vive ancora nel dolore e di pace non ne trova.
Comincia, quindi, un corteo di dolori interiori, corpi mutilati, identità andate a pezzi.
«Uno scandalo che continua da diecimila anni» e se qualcosa la Storia ci ha insegnato è che continua,

Storia e storie
Come tutte le piccole storie umane, anche quella di Ida e Useppe Ramundo si perde nella grande Storia e a essa s'intreccia, al tempo stesso, correndo in parallelo.
Elsa Morante, con una maestria disarmante e forse unica, ci narra la loro povera vicenda in questo romanzo che definire monumentale è poca cosa. Una voce coinvolgente, la sua, capace di scandagliare sentimenti ed emozioni di protagonisti e personaggi vari, nonché di accompagnare il lettore fra le strade di una Roma misera e ferita, ben lontana dai fasti baldanzosi e arroganti del Ventennio. Ed ecco riemergere da queste pagine di una intensità sconvolgente le macerie ancora fumanti di San Lorenzo o la sfollata desolazione di Pietralata o, ancora, i vicoli ormai condannati del Ghetto; dal baratro affannoso del tempo si leva anche il vocio incessante dei vagoni bestiame con il proprio tragico carico umano, in attesa di partenza dalla stazione Tiburtina. E poi la miseria più nera, la fame, sprazzi di lotta partigiana, mentre la Storia prosegue indifferente il suo cammino e la carne da macello continua a essere immolata sull'altare blasfemo della guerra.
Una scrittura magnifica e potente che si fa strepito di fucili e stupore di bambino, canzoni d'anarchia e ninnenanne perdute tra parentesi evanescenti d'infanzia; una scrittura altresì commovente e profonda che si cala nei vernacoli o nel cuore parlante delle bestie di sincera umanità e, con discrezione, s'insinua nella stantìa promiscuità di periferia, così come nei ricordi e nelle speranze deluse, nei pensieri e nei deliri incoscienti, raccontando ritorni e non ritorni da una guerra che, in verità, non finisce mai del tutto perché, per riprendere le parole di Primo Levi, “guerra è sempre”.
Struggenti e destinati a persistere nella memoria i personaggi di Useppe e Ida, meri pulviscoli in quel cielo sterminato di fragili stelle che è il mondo. Travolgente quello di Nino, drammaticamente sfuggente e ombroso quello di Davide. CRITIQUE:
(Family) Life During Wartime
There were few pages or sentences in this novel that deserved to be singled out for attention. For much of it, I was content to measure my progress towards the end, as if I too was enduring a war that surely had to come to a close. The last chapter seemed to plunge the characters into a state of mass hysteria, even though the war was over. Yet, paradoxically, this was the chapter that finally convinced me that the novel deserved five stars, not just four.
Three of the characters are members of the one family - the mother Ida, older son Nino and younger son Useppe - actually, there are four members if you count the talking dog, Bella. (There's an element of magical wartime realism in this novel.)
The bulk of the novel's action takes place from 1941 to 1947, although the text of the novel and each chapter is bookended by short historical summaries of the period from 1900 to 1967. These summaries are marked by left-wing prose and concerns that sound Marxist, sometimes even anarchist. (They represent the views of the resistance to Fascism.) As the title would suggest, History is both a concern and a context, perhaps even a character.
The Story as Character
I mention that History might be a character, because the novel has an unnamed narrator, a first person who never engages in the action (other than, apparently, to seek information about the characters), but was nevertheless someone (some one?) I was trying to identify throughout the novel. In the last chapter, for no clear reason, I started to wonder whether the narrator might be History itself.
This is a history of the second world war in Italy, as revealed through the lives of the members of the fictional Ramundo/Mancuso family. The contracted public history is fleshed out by the private life of this family (and Bella).
A History (Made) of Love
Naturally, in this family, despite the fact that it existed and lived throughout the war, there is much love between the family members, and it is this love that finally convinced me of the novel's worth.
Ida Mancuso (nee Ramundo) is a tiny woman, an elementary school teacher, who during the war discovers that she is half-Jewish (on her mother's side), when this becomes an administrative category of person or citizen, which category is in fact used by the Italian government's race laws to deny the citizenship or personhood of the half-Jew, not to mention the full-blooded Jew. Still, Ida's Jewishness remains a closely kept secret both within the family and within her school and community.
The state-sponsored propaganda inculcates in Ida a racial guilt. At the same time, it perpetuates (capitalised) myths like -
To which the people and the partisans respond in song:
Nino is the son of Ida and her deceased husband, Alfio Mancuso. Despite some youthful Fascist sympathies, he ends up in the Italian partisan movement, where he meets a Jewish anarchist philosopher/poet, Davide Segre, who is also known as Carlo Vivaldi.
Useppe is the product of a situation where Ida is raped in her home by a drunken German soldier called Gunther. Neither Ida nor the narrator knows his surname, although, unbeknown to Ida, the narrator learns that Gunther died three days after the rape. Thus, Useppe has never known the true identity of his father. He is simply his mother's son.
Nino is about 14 or 15 when Useppe is born. Useppe idolises Nino for most of the novel, although Nino is often absent on partisan duties or in hiding, and is rarely able to comply with his promises to visit him regularly. Despite his origins, Useppe gets his ration of love from his mother, Ida. She loves him unconditionally, even if he is half-German/Aryan.
Both Ida and Useppe suffer from an undiagnosed ailment that is variously described as attacks, fits and "grand mal" seizures. This condition seems to be symbolic of their alienation from the conventional Italian or Aryan community.
The Persecution of a Half-Jew
Ida suffers three instances of racial persecution in the novel.
One results in her rape. Another involves her being terrorised by public announcements and notices about the new racial laws targetting Jews (and, by definition, her). This casts her into a Kafkaesque world where she fears being arbitrarily victimised by Italian police and officials, and the German Gestapo and SS.
The third occurs when she encounters a train full of Jews departing to a concentration camp. From the platform, she witnesses the wife of one of the passengers declare that "I'm just as Jewish as you!...My family's in there!...I want to get into this train too!!" as if she can't justify or rationalise the fact that she, like Ida, has escaped being rounded up by the police.
The state propaganda machine makes her feel guilty for being what she is. It strikes at her core, her essence, her role as wife and mother, forcing her to separate from her family. Ida also picks up a personal note from another passenger, so that she can deliver it to his family on his behalf. The least she can do is defiantly communicate from the dead (or soon to be dead) to the living. This, in turn, is what Elsa Moraine achieves with her novel.
Ida doesn't end up in a concentration camp, but her personal and family experience of the Holocaust is just as tormented - it's sickening, heart-breaking and soul-destroying. Her family disintegrates before her very eyes. Her life collapses before ours. This History is no mere account of a war from a military perspective. It is overwhelmingly human.

“Tutta la Storia e le nazioni della terra s’erano concordate a questo fine: la strage del bambinello Useppe Ramundo.”
Ha fatto discutere e farà discutere ancora.
È stato oggetto di ampie analisi (quella di Garboli sopra ogni altra) è stato a suo tempo condannato e respinto, è stato poi elogiato e osannato.
Di un pessimismo estremo, o piuttosto, semplicemente, di un realismo insopportabile.
È un romanzo fluviale, il capolavoro imperfetto della più grande scrittrice italiana.
Dove la Storia non è che uno sfondo cupo, indifferente a ogni piccola e dimenticabile storia. Fatta di individui trascinati nel vortice polveroso degli eventi e lasciati cadere, inutili, nella spirale del tempo. Sepolti nell’oblio.
Noi invece ci ricorderemo per sempre del piccolo Useppe, del baldanzoso Nino, della timida Ida Ramundo, dell’angosciato Davide Segre, del fiducioso oste Remo, del “matto” Eppetondo, della disperata Celeste di Segni che grida “so’ giudia!”verso il convoglio chiuso e muto dei deportati a Auschwitz…Ci ricorderemo anche dei Mille di Pietralata e dei Marrocco del Testaccio…della prostituta Santina e del ragazzo fuggitivo Pietro Scimò…
E mentre si compie lo sfacelo della Storia il cane Bella continuerà a esprimere la sua naturale felicità di vivere e la gatta Rossella a mostrarci il suo mistero felino.

È tempo di riscoprire questo romanzo che all'epoca della sua prima pubblicazione nel 1974 fu, al tempo stesso, un vero e proprio successo editoriale e un oggetto di critica spietata. Invero, pare che ancora oggi sia molto venduto anche se dai più non letto o scoperto tardivamente. Non è certo l'eco distruttiva della critica ideologizzata a tenercelo lontano, quanto un inspiegabile e generalizzato disamore per la storia. Eppure questo romanzo di oltre seicento pagine assolve l'importante funzione di avvicinarci alla nostra storia e lo fa in modo semplice con protagonista un mondo di popolani, espressione di una vitalità sincera e genuina, sprovveduta e meschina. Al centro Ida, una maestrina romana d'adozione, ebrea, vedova, madre di due figli, Nino e Useppe, in realtà fratellastri perché il secondo è il frutto di una violenza gratuita perpetrata da un giovane e sprovveduto soldato tedesco ai danni di Iduzza. Attorno al loro universo ruota un microcosmo di personaggi che si muovono imperterriti nello scenario di una Roma sventrata dagli eventi della seconda guerra mondiale. Sono i quartieri popolari bombardati, il ghetto forzatamente popolato e poi tristemente svuotato, le periferie suburbane dove ancora la campagna riesce a restituire una primordiale vitalità. Il tempo del vivere è scandito dagli eventi bellici e l'esistenza è ridotta a pura sopravvivenza; molti soccomberanno mentre altri resisteranno, tutti però in un modo o nell'altro verranno schiacciati dalla Storia. Opera meritoria, di godibile lettura con il pregio di non scadere mai nella retorica nonostante il dolore rappresentato, capace anche di trasmettere non un'ideologia, come molti avrebbero auspicato al tempo, ma ideali, benché pervasi da un cupo pessimismo, a cui l'umanità non dovrebbe mai rinunciare. Una tensione alla vita, pura e bella, contro i soprusi del passato e le temute involuzioni del presente, quelle degli anni '70 così tristemente attuali ancora oggi.

Un'opera lacerante: gli episodi narrati in questo romanzo sono un susseguirsi di emozioni forti, spesso di profonda tristezza, che percuotono il lettore con la loro immanente malinconia. Affiancati, poi, ad altrettanti avvenimenti descritti con rara sensibilità capaci di scatenare attimi di incosciente felicità, purtroppo destinati ad essere prontamente spazzati via.
In questo romanzo, ambientato per la maggior parte negli anni della seconda guerra mondiale, i protagonisti hanno il ruolo di cavie: dal basso assistono alle alienate decisioni dei capi di stato, che compiono scelte che condannano intere nazioni e annientano popoli. L'autrice mostra le gesta di poche personalità, ma il messaggio è molto più ampio, lo si nota nelle numerose digressioni storiche che affiancano l'andamento del romanzo. A me è sembrato che la scrittrice voglia invitare a un cambiamento della condizione umana, per evitare la ripetizione di atti scellerati che da sempre costituiscono la storia. Perché gli uomini nella storia diventano cifre, numeri che annichiliscono ogni forma di personalità, perdite considerate accettabili. E i malinconici -seppur così vitali- personaggi di questo romanzo, subiscono le conseguenze delle macchinazioni del potere, riuscendo spesso a superare il peggio grazie all'inestimabile forza della sopravvivenza. Ed è impossibile non affezionarsi alla protagonista Ida e alla sua piccola famiglia, ai loro brevi attimi di spensieratezza che danno vita a situazioni di splendida tenerezza.
La Storia è un testo eccezionale, intriso di vitalità, ogni giudizio-soprattutto il mio- finisce per sminuire l'immensità di questo romanzo.

تاریخ داستان زندگی مادری به همراه دو پسرش در ایتالیای سالهای جنگ جهانی دومه. روایت تکان دهنده شروع میشه و با پیش بردن خرده روایتهایی در کنار خط اصلی داستان جلو میره. بنظرم ایده کلی داستان جذاب بود و فضاسازی ها عالی (به خصوص بخشهای مربوط به اتاق بزرگ)؛ و نکتهی جالب دیگه اینکه نویسنده به جای ارجاع به حوادث تاریخی در پینوشت در ابتدای هر بخش که بر اساس سال طبقه بندی شده بود، حوادث تاریخی مربوط به اون سال و جنگ رو شرح میداد که هم باعث میشد خواننده یه دید کلی نسبت اتفاق ها داشته باشه هم هنگام خوندن کتاب تمرکز بر روایت اصلی رو از دست نده.
حال و هوای شهر رم در اون سالها از جمله ظهور موسولینی و محاصره شهر توسط آلمانها عالی پرداخت شده. کاملا میشه با آدمهایی که در اون روزها زندگی میکردن همراه شد و درکشون کرد.
با این حال ایراد اصلی تاریخ پرگویی هایی که خیلی جاها از حد تحمل خارج میشن، ۱۰۰ صفحه پایانی بخشهایی که نویسنده سعی داره عقاید و افکارش رو از طریق اوهام و سخنرانی های «داوید سگره» بیان کنه به شدت خستهکننده است و انگار تمام اون ۷۰-۸۰ صفحه حول بیان چیزی میگرده که میشه در چند صفحه خلاصهاش کرد.
با تمام اینها تاریخ دوست داشتنی بود و متفاوت. پایان بینظیر و عجیبی داشت و درگیرکننده بود.

اگر اون زیادهگویی ها نبود احتمالا ۵ میدادم ولی متاسفانه اون اواخر خیلی اذیتم کرد :))

Nascido da guerra e com a guerra, é a guerra que marca toda a sua vida. É a guerra que limita os locais onde dorme, que conildiciona a qualidade da alimentação e dos cuidados que tem.
Useppe é símbolo de uma geração que a guerra não deixou ser menino, uma geração que não cresceu. Uma geração de dor.
Elsa Morante escreve um dos mais belos e terríveis livros sobre a guerra. Sobre o amor dentro de uma família. Sobre uma cidade - Roma - ferida pelo horror do conflito.
Esta releitura custou-me tanto quanto a primeira vez que peguei neste livro. Fiquei arrepiado e revoltado com a "cena" inicial. Sorri com a ternura de Useppe para com o seu irmão Ninno. Revoltei-me com o desespero do pós guerra. Chorei com a doença e a fragilidade do nosso herói.
E foi tão bom sentir tudo isto de novo. Que livro tão bom. Quero voltar.

La Storia ti entra nel cuore e poi strappa e lacera tutto quello che trova.

Despite its flaws, I think this novel is important; without its flaws, which make for tedious reading at times, perhaps it wouldn't be itself. Because of these flaws, though, the book took me longer to read than a book this length normally would.
Except for a vocabulary choice that the translator got stuck on, the translation seems to be fine. Most of the time the writing flows, and there are some wonderful set-pieces, until that flow is interrupted by long-winded, detailed passages of things like Davide's drugged ramblings in a tavern on politics, anarchy and revolution. Immediately afterward a detailed description of his numerous drugged dreams almost stopped me in exasperation, but at least it was near the end. Some of this I understood the point of, but some of this elicited an inner sigh.
Another issue I had is with Morante's depiction of animals, especially near the end with the dog Bella. I realize the conversations between Bella and the child Useppe move the plot along, but it was way too icky-precious for me.
A couple of the scenes that resonate powerfully are of Ida and Useppe finding themselves in front of the train that is taking away the Jews, and of Ida's later visit to the empty Jewish Ghetto as she experiences what would now be called PTSD. The metaphors, including those elucidating the characters' inner states, are especially fine.
Perhaps the book went on too long, as the best scenes seem to end with the shortest chapter, '1945' -- the heartbreaking description of the few Jews who've survived the Holocaust returning to Rome, and a look back at one Italian soldier's experience as the army retreats from a frozen Russia -- but without the later years (1946 and 1947), Morante's theme would not be driven in as effectively, a theme we obviously need to hear about over and over, as the news today from Egypt fits right in with her passion and anger. That anger seems to dissipate (to sadness) by the end of her fictional story, but it is back in full force in her historical epilogue that takes us through 1967.

La Storia e la storia
E così, con questo romanzo ponderoso e fluviale, ho messo a posto un altro tassello della mia tardiva riscoperta della narrativa italiana del ‘900, e lo dico con una certa soddisfazione e un pizzico di sfinimento perché alcune parti del prefinale, allorché la complessa figura del partigiano anarchico ebreo Davide assume inaspettatamente un ruolo coprotagonista, mi sono sembrate francamente eccessive e ridondanti.
Si tratta di un romanzo storico appartenente al filone in cui la Storia con la S maiuscola viene vissuta dal basso, attraverso lo sguardo, la vita e l’esperienza della povera gente che subisce passivamente i rovesci e le sorti del corso degli eventi senza alcuna possibilità (o capacità) di influire su di essi: niente re, principesse o condottieri, dunque, niente eroi o generali, nessuno che abbia in mano anche in minima parte le redini della Storia compare in questo romanzo se non fugacemente sulle pagine dei giornali o sui manifesti.
Quasi a sottolineare questo aspetto, la Morante scandisce l’inizio di ogni parte dell’opera, corrispondente ad un anno, con un efficace capitoletto in cui elenca in sintesi i grandi eventi che si succedono dal 1941 in poi, mettendo così a contrasto bombardamenti, battaglie, trattati, stragi, armistizi con le ripercussioni che tali eventi in apparenza lontani provocano nella vita, o per meglio dire nella sopravvivenza della gente comune rappresentata in primis da Ida e i suoi due figli ma ben presto estesa ai tantissimi personaggi di contorno, alcuni dei quali resteranno indelebili nella memoria del lettore.
E’ noto come il romanzo della Morante sia stato oggetto di un intenso dibattito culturale con aspri giudizi della critica contrapposti al grande successo editoriale e popolare (e per inciso proprio al “popolo” la Morante dichiarava di rivolgersi, donde la sua volontà di ricorrere da subito all’edizione economica) e incentrati su alcuni elementi in particolare, come l’eccesso di patetismo e il reiterato ricorso a scene destinate a stimolare la commozione. Questo è forse vero, anche se è da ritenersi quasi inevitabile che un romanzo esplicitamente popolare ricorra anche al tasto del patetico e del melodrammatico.
Mi pare che un altro fattore ancor più biasimato dalla critica risieda nel fatto che la Morante in questo romanzo, proprio in un periodo di sperimentalismi letterari, si espone come “la più tradizionale dei narratori novecenteschi”. Ma a tal proposito, molto meglio di quanto possa esprimere io, mi sembrano significative le parole dell’italianista Chiara Fenoglio, nelle quali, per caso, mi sono imbattuto in questi giorni. …I suoi romanzi contraddicono l’ideologia del postmoderno, mostrano una fiducia ancora indefessa nella forma romanzo, nella sua valenza classica, nella sua forza architettonica oltre che rappresentativa. Ma Morante non ignora la discontinuità: anzi proprio perché ne è cosciente insegue il sogno del romanzo.
Comunque sia, “La Storia”, nella sua complessa interezza rappresenta uno spaccato della Roma degli anni ‘40 di intensità ed efficacia superiore a qualsiasi saggio storico volesse rappresentarne la vera, cruda e dolorosa realtà. Al di là dell’effetto della violenza dei bombardamenti e dell’occupazione nazista, cui ero in qualche modo preparato, è il senso della miseria e della fame che ha particolarmente colpito la mia immaginazione, un mondo in macerie dove qualunque oggetto può diventare un cibo, qualunque straccio un indumento, qualunque rudere una casa.

Hidden in History
The word "history" contains another word within it: "story." In Italian, the two words are the same, La Storia. This is the title of Elsa Morante's huge novel of 1974, which contrasts the history of the Second World War and its aftermath with the story of a poor family in Rome, so marginal as to have no chance of appearing in any history books at all. Her initial protagonist is Ida Mancuso, a widowed schoolteacher who is bombed out of her apartment and has to share a single room in the suburbs with several other displaced families. The attention soon shifts, however, to her two sons, Nino and Useppe. Useppe (the child's own mispronunciation of his given name) is the offspring of Ida's rape by a drunken German soldier, born premature and undersized, but she loves him with a passion. The idea of viewing the events of the Fascist era though the eyes of an unusually small child may owe something to the 1959 novel by Günter Grass, The Tin Drum, but Useppe is altogether sweeter, more innocent, and endowed with a boundless capacity for love and wonder. Time spent in his company is a delight, and his sweetness—especially when accompanied by his dog Bella—is the main thing that makes some of the darker passages of the book bearable. With her sympathy for ordinary people trapped by great events, Morante shares the deep humanity shown by Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, though she is softer and less intense.
If I were to compare History to Italian movies, I would think of Roberto Rossellini's Rome, Open City (1945) and Vittorio de Sica's Bicycle Thieves (1948) for their gritty but human portrayal of Rome under German occupation and immediately after the war. But I would also add Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful (1997), whose whimsical charm won through even against the background of the Holocaust. Morante combines realism with a very similar charm, and the historical summaries with which she begins each part are selected (even slanted) to emphasize the same forces: antisemitism and communism. Although Ida's mother was Jewish, she was baptized a Christian and thus does not count as Jewish under the Italian race laws, though she is at risk when the Germans take over an impose their own classifications. In the social chaos of the second half of the book, all political solutions seem equally ineffective, whether it be a faltering fascism, doctrinaire communism, or an idealized anarchist equality. Throughout his teens, Nino's desire to be in the thick of things makes him first a Young Fascist, then a leader of the communist resistance, and then an entrepreneur in the black market. Useppe watches all these changes with wonder and unfailing hero-worship.
The first half of this 734-page book is a marvel, five stars plus. But then it becomes difficult. Up to the Allied liberation of Rome, events in Italy were still being played out on the world stage, and Morante makes the irony of perspective between her hidden story and the march of history work perfectly. But the ending of the War marked the start of a political instability in Italy that lasted for decades, and is well-nigh incomprehensible to outsiders, who therefore lack the background against which to follow the personal story. Nevertheless, I suspect that it was this aftermath rather than its wartime prelude that was the primary target for Morante's writing, as she struggled to explore the confusion of the postwar years in human terms. Unfortunately, this is reflected in the novel by the break-up of old friendships, the sudden introduction of minor characters, long discursions on political topics, and an emphasis on crime, disorder, drug-addiction, illness, and death. It can be challenging to read, posing questions with no satisfactory answers, symbolized by Useppe's repeated and mispronounced "why":

"Wy wy wy wy?" This little question had a stubborn and heartrending sound. It recalled the voices of abandoned kittens, of donkeys blindfolded at the mill, of lambs loaded on a wagon for the Easter festivities. It was never known if all these anonymous and unanswered "wys" reached some destination, perhaps an invulnerable ear beyond all earthly places.

Esiste un prima e un dopo aver letto La Storia di Elsa Morante. Se ne esce persone diverse. Ti dilania il cuore. Capolavoro.

No conozco muchas personas que lo hayan leído. Solo una, mi hermana que además fue quien me lo recomendó.
Hay muchos libros que no se olvidan por diversas razones, de este debo decir que ha marcado mi trayecto como lectora. Busqué y sigo buscando un libro que me toque cada fibra como este, aunque la verdad he sentido miedo, la carga emocional es pesada y es imposible no involucrarse. La historia es UNA HISTORIA, (valga la redundancia) que arranca en la italia fashista, de la segunda guerra y alcanza la postguerra. Es la historia de una familia, de una mamá, de unos niños. Nunca he visto una caracterización y expresión tan bien lograda de lo que es ser niño, dudo mucho que la haya; y es "Ussepe" el que le dará el rotulo de realismo fantástico a esta novela. Lo leí hace más de 10 años en unas vacaciones. Cinco días de solo comer, dormir y leer. ...Y llorar a partes iguales, por belleza y por tristeza. Porque hay belleza y poesia en Giussepe, en el amor, en el abandono, en el sobrevivir a cada día.
No sé si pueda leerlo nuevamente, pero eso si, ¡quiero mi ejemplar!. El que yo leí pertenece a la Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango de Bogotá, y hasta donde he visto no hay mas ejemplares en bibliotecas públicas. Años más tarde, cuando empecé a trabajar, quise comprar el libro, pero no lo había en las librerías y fue imposible importarlo (no encontraban ejemplares). Desde hace unas semanas lo veo en amazon y estoy esperando que baje el precio y que yo tenga el dinero para adquirirlo.
No quería escribir nada de este libro, porque es para mí una obra sui géneris y al haber pasado tanto tiempo y no tenerlo a la mano, para revisar y escribir algo que valga la pena, cualquier cosa que escriba siento que es un sacrilegio.
Sin embargo, me animé a escribir estas líneas, porque estuve revisando aquí y no encontré reseñas de hispanohablantes, y porque es un libro que recomiendo. Unico en su género, en su prosa, en su historia, en su estilo, en su poesia, y en su fantasia y realidad. Para mí, al igual que para muchos es un clasico del siglo XX.

El que yo leí pertenece a la Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango de Bogotá, y hasta donde he visto no hay mas ejemplares en bibliotecas públicas. Años más tarde, cuando empecé a trabajar, quise comprar el libro, pero no lo había en las librerías y fue imposible importarlo (no encontraban ejemplares). Desde hace unas semanas lo veo en amazon y estoy esperando que baje el precio y que yo tenga el dinero para adquirirlo.
No quería escribir nada de este libro, porque es para mí una obra sui géneris y al haber pasado tanto tiempo y no tenerlo a la mano, para revisar y escribir algo que valga la pena, cualquier cosa que escriba siento que es un sacrilegio.
Sin embargo, me animé a escribir estas líneas, porque estuve revisando aquí y no encontré reseñas de hispanohablantes, y porque es un libro que recomiendo. Unico en su género, en su prosa, en su historia, en su estilo, en su poesia, y en su fantasia y realidad. Para mí, al igual que para muchos es un clasico del siglo XX.

Non so da che parte cominciare per parlarvi di questo libro, della sua potenza, della sua magnifica eloquenza.
È scontato, ma altresì verissimo, dire che si tratta di un libro necessario.
È stato necessario scriverlo, ma ancora di più leggerlo oggi.
Perchè Morante racconta la II Guerra Mondiale, ma il senso ultimo del romanzo, il suo significato più profondo (secondo me), è che la cornice potrebbe essere una qualunque di guerra o miseria, o prevaricazione o sopruso.
Si è scelto di raccontare la Storia, raccontando in particolare quella di Ida, Nino, Useppe, Davide/Carlo. Uno qualsiasi di questi personaggi potremmo essere io o voi, se le condizioni di partenza fossero state meno favorevoli.
Non è stato facile leggere questo libro, ma sono contenta di averlo fatto.
Questi personaggi vivranno per molto tempo nel mio cuore.

Era da anni che volevo leggere “La storia” di Elsa Morante.
Ne ho così approfittato, lanciando una lettura condivisa su X (ex Twitter), durata 54 giorni di lettura, a partire dal 1º febbraio.
Premetto che ancora non ho visto la serie TV: ho voluto prima leggere il libro.
La trama è nota.
Mi è piaciuto lo stile della Morante, la sua capacità di guardare alla Storia che va dal 1941 al 1947 con gli occhi di Ida e Useppe.
Il personaggio più sgradevole è Nino, che mi è sembrato un giovane profittatore, che non riesce a comprendere né il periodo storico in cui vive né sua madre.

"La Storia" è un romanzo storico pubblicato nel 1974 ed è uno dei capolavori di Elsa Morante.
Il romanzo è ambientato a Roma durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e prosegue fino all'immediato dopoguerra. Seguiamo la vita di Ida Ramundo, un'insegnante vedova ed ebrea per metà che vive in un appartamento del quartiere San Lorenzo con il figlio adolescente Nino. Proprio qui, un giovane militare tedesco le userà violenza e da questa violenza nascerà Useppe.
La storia di Ida prosegue poi attraverso le atrocità, le paure e gli stenti di chi è stato costretto a vivere durante la guerra e le difficoltà di cercare di riappropriarsi di una vita normale.
Avrei voluto fare una recensione migliore di questo libro davvero bellissimo ma purtroppo lo dovrò associare a un momento tristissimo della mia vita.

Oh, thank you for asking, lover. No, it wasn't good for me. I left before I came.
I can't give this one star because that would mean it's a piece of garbage, which it most certainly is not. For the right kind of reader I'm sure it could be an amazing novel. Who is that right kind of reader? One who doesn't mind, or even enjoys, long, long, very long expository passages. One who doesn't mind, or even enjoys, long, sometimes very long, descriptions of a person's features or mental processes. I am not that reader. (I make exceptions, of course, for certain of my favorite authors who can hold my interest with those long passages.)
If you like those dreadfully slow-moving Russian novels from Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky and their ilk, this one might work for you as well. For me, the most impressive thing about it was the quality of the translation from Italian.

Un libro toccante che ci racconta la Storia con la voce di chi, suo malgrado, ne è il protagonista: non ci sono vincitori, ma solo vinti. Bravissima l'autrice che costruisce un romanzo dalla pluralità dei punti di vista, dove tutti i personaggi (anche quelli che compaiono solo per poche pagine) sono caratterizzati alla perfezione; tanta bravura anche nella costruzione della personalità degli animali (cani e gatti) che esprimono una consapevolezza di cui le loro controparti umane difettano.
Un unico neo (che probabilmente qualche decennio fa non avrei neanche notato): la tendenza ad assolvere il fascismo, considerato quasi una una pagliacciata mentre i veri aguzzini rimangono i nazisti; credo che questa tendenza assolutoria (Italiani brava gente), con la conseguente minimizzazione del ruolo dei fascisti italiani, sia un atteggiamento di cui ancora oggi scontiamo le conseguenze.

Una prosa densissima, e al contempo ottima, in mezzo alla quale al lettore sembra, talvolta, di doversi fare largo a gomitate per poter procedere, quasi l’autrice soffrisse di un rinnovato e barocco horror vacui. Una galleria di personaggi umanissimi, anche se sempre un po’ al limite del caricaturale. Una “storia” con la esse minuscola che sullo sfondo della “Storia” con la esse maiuscola rivendica il proprio diritto a esistere e a essere raccontata. Una materia ricca per navigare in lungo e in largo, nonostante qualche perplessità sull’evolversi delle situazioni.
Un’esperienza da fare, direi, ma assolutamente sconsigliata a chi va di fretta. Perché qui si deve principalmente ascoltare, con calma. Come fa Useppe.

Mi amor por Elsa ha sido renovado. Escrita mucho tiempo después que Mentira y Sortilegio (la primera en el 48 y la Historia en el 74. Son completamente diferentes, aunque me parece emocionante de otra manera. Los protagonistas son seres sufridos, pobres y oprimidos. No me parece que el desarrollo de los personajes sea para nada como había hecho antes, porque aquí en realidad son víctimas de las circunstancias, y especialmente, del poder. Es en realidad el mayor enemigo, el poder. También es una novela más irregular, en lo que salen cosas que se desvían hacia distintas direcciones, como hacia el final, los pensamientos de un personaje que para mi aunque dice mucho, no parece conocerse demasiado de el. Es raro, me tomará un tiempo poder sentir el efecto que este libro tiene sobre mi, y quiero dejar de compararlo con otros libros de Morante. Es más que nada, una oda en contra del poder, de todo el mal que hace, hay algunos personajes anarquistas por los cuales se siente simpatía, y pensándolo, en términos de opiniones políticas, son los que más parecen gozar de simpatía.
Un elemento que me causó conflicto, fue el hecho que los animales tuvieran voz, y pensaban y asumían cosas, porque me parece un poco cursi, aunque eso no significa que se trate de una novela cursi, solo fue un susto. Es solo que el tono nunca sabes por donde va, creo que siente ternura por sus personajes, pero no por sus personalidades, tanto como sus problemas, por el hecho de que son víctimas de algo, de la guerra, del hambre, de la enfermedad.
Me parece un libro importante, aunque no diría que es un libro fácil, es más que nada un tapiz, lleno de acontecimientos, que son, o no, importantes para la historia, pero que suceden. La guerra es casi todo en este libro, pero no lo es todo porque parece ser más que nada una consecuencia, algo irreparable, algo que cambia la vida de las personas sin posibilidad de ser olvidada, o de volver a una inocencia que ya deja de existir para siempre.
Me deja pensando mucho en el tema del poder, en como las historias deben ser contadas lejos de el, y en ese sentido, este libro es una belleza, que levanta el llanto dolorido de el alma humana, que sufre desde siempre a causa de el poder de unos pocos.

Ecco, alla fine La Storia è davvero la protagonista del romanzo.
Ossia: come questa influisce sulla gente, in questo caso sui personaggi, che qui rispecchiano in larghissima parte le caratteristiche di quelli già incontrati in "Menzogna e Sortilegio" e "L'Isola di Arturo".
Nella "Storia", la scrittura è molto più immediata e scorrevole; la narrazione è meno oscura e più lineare.
Alcune zone del racconto sono da lacrime vere, altre illustrano la situazione storica negli anni della seconda guerra mondiale (per finire nell'immediato dopoguerra) meglio di tanti saggi o documentari sull'argomento. I personaggi sono di incredibile profondità; tutti dei poveri disgraziati, perché era quella la parte dimenticata di mondo e di società che la Morante voleva mettere in luce.
