As Sheila Roberts takes us to beautiful, heartwarming Icicle Falls, at Christmas time, we happily join her.
We see sights, sounds, and tastes of restaurants vividly. We feel the love as Olivia shares her baking secrets with Meadow. We understand not all daughter in laws are created equal. We learn the term "ugly tree" doesn't just mean trees. We contemplate ugly tree projects we have in our personal lives.
We happily partake in empanadas, flan, and hope to enjoy the handful of recipes carefully described in the back of the book.
I always love getting to visit the characters I've come to relate to from this series. Icicle Falls included the 18 characters, and more, of whom I can bake with, read with, knit with, eat chocolate with, and feel the love with. These folks seem to be my kind of folks/town. They care for people, pets, and strays. They improve their lives as we travel through the book.
I enjoyed the development of Bob Cratchett in this story. We saw his gruff exterior, learned the cause, and watched him melt. The "ugly tree", that was Mr. Cratchett, wasn't so ugly in the end. This leads to my enjoying the love relationships between couples who were in their twenties, thirties and in their seventies. I felt the kinship and bonding. I personalized like unto my own relationship with my husband.
I also appreciated the way Sienna was patient with Leo, then Tim's daughters were patient and loving with Leo. After there were bullying incidents, no one completely lost their minds-as seems the real world we live in. We see mind loss on the news reports.
More people should read the Hallmark channel type books like Sheila write. They might lose their minds less often.
