Before Amy Cahill’s father died, he drank and gambled away every farthing. It’s now Amy’s first Season and her family is counting on her to marry well. When, on her very first night at Almacks, she is charmed by the dashing Major Hampton, it’s love at first sight, but what of her obligations to her family? Freddie is smitten by the lovely Miss Amy Cahill and would like nothing more than to offer her his hand in marriage. But, Freddie is not all that he seems. He also has obligations, not only to his regimen, but to his family title. Will Freddie reveal himself before it is too late and he loses Amy forever? What will Amy think of his deception when she learns Major Freddie Hampton is really Earl Frederick Havering? CHARMED BY THE EARL is a 20,000 word historical regency romance with an inspirational theme of sweet love. As always, it is clean and wholesome with no cliff-hangers, no cheating, and a guaranteed happily ever after ending.
Just for staying True to the Genre, she gets all 5 stars. Authors such as Ms. Atherton, who do not subject their readers to unnecessary Time Warps by using (outside the established Regency Timeline) contemporary words in present day context have all my support. Plus the storyline is not bad either. Captain Freddie Hampton, secret Lord, only son and heir of the Earl of Havering as well as secret agent to the Crown (and newly promoted to Major) is so used to his role as a spy that he never revealed his title even to the woman he loves. Miss Amy Cahill ~ dowerless, plucky and smart debutante, upon setting eyes on Major Hampton, knew that he is the love of her life. The same is true for him, but because of his taciturnity owing to his other work as a spy, wreaked havoc to any budding affectionate relationship that may develop between them. Of course, Love triumphs at the end for two courageous young lovers who have successfully overcome the odds that fazed them. Good and solid read, not at all rushed or maudlin, at least for me.
Short and really sweet Amy was having her coming out at Almacks. Her mother was an old friend of one of the Patronesses so was able to secure a voucher. It was here that Amy met Major Freddie Hampton and it was love at first sight for both of them. But of course as with most historical romances, there were many hurdles to cross. This couple managed to overcome them by the end of the story and they lived happily ever after. I did enjoy watching them through all those hurdles, however, as that was the most enjoyable part. All the angst, the elation, the let down, and then the smooth sailing was all worth it.
For those who enjoy this genre, this is a heartwarming 1800s 'royalty' romance, although many aspects are unknown to Amy and her family when she presents herself at her first season of the 'ton'. Because of their financial situation, Amy hopes to marry well to support her overworked sister who is contributing towards her 'season'. Her heart goes out to Major Hampton, who remains somewhat mysterious to her. Because this is a novelette, the depth of the family's characters and specific details of the conclusion are a bit abbreviated, however, it remains an entertaining read throughout.
Charmed by an Earl is truly a sweet and clean novella. Set in the Regency period, this charming tale features an unpretentious and kind heroine who falls in love with an officer who is leading a double life. Will she also be a forgiving heroine when the hero is finally able to tell her the truth?
This gem of a romance is well written by Belinda Atherton. The characters are likable and the ending is happy. It is sweet, clean and suitable for all readers.
Loved this book...his circumstances required him to keep certain important facts from her, but Amy fell for the young seemingly impoverished young man she met at Almacks. With so many things in common with him, she never suspected that he had been raised in the huge manor that was in the countryside where she went to find out why he'd changed so quickly. Discovering the truths he'd had to keep from her made Amy realize that he could never have been hers anyhow. Saddened by her newfound knowledge, she decided to find someone who could help her impoverished family. A chance meeting changed everything for her future.. Received this book in a giveaway, and I leaving a review in hopes others will also give it a try.
Absolutely loved this book and would totally recommend it and hope that others enjoy the tale of two people different yet alike who meet and fall for each other. Amy who is from an improvised family through no fault of her own and Freddie who though he seems to be just a soldier is much more. Can these two people be together or will differences and untruths keep them apart.
This really was a sweet short book. For me it was too short. Otherwise, it took great liberties with known facts of the time period. If you can over look all that, then toss in a nice, prospective mother in law. Read on 😀
I received a free Advanced Reader Copy of this book for a fair unbiased view, which I believe I have done.
A delightful tale of concealed identity, genteel poverty and love. Amy must marry well to ensure the care of her family, but falls in love with a military officer. As an intelligence operative, Freddie must keep his name and title secret. Oh, the ups and downs of love.
Amy is about to have her dream of a season finally fulfilled. With the help of her sister, Natasha, the money is there to find the season. Natasha had left home to work as a governess just to provide for Any and their mother, after their father's death. With love and sacrifices like this, how could the book not be one of the best? Read it and enjoy a good story!
The beginning of Amy's story made her appear to be a younger ungrateful sister, which was completely untrue. Her true character needs to be further developed. The story left me more interested in knowing more about Amy's sister, Natasha and the Earl's best friend in the military.
Two people meet and fall in love at first sight, they should marry and live happily ever after but they themselves throw obstacles in their way. He doesn’t confess his real identity and she wants to save her family.
A lovely story of finding romance even though the girl's family has fallen on hard times and the oldest sister becomes a governess to keep the family a float in funds so that the twin brothers can be educated and her sister can have a season in London.
Amy is a young girl trying to make a good match. Major Freddie Hampton is Soldier with a secret. They both fall in love with each other the moment they meet.
He’s a lord but in the service and she’s a debutante. They fall in love instantly but he’s a spy and can’t tell her. He leaves on a mission and she’s devastated.
