For Vesper Grey, there is the Before and the After. The Before is devastatingly boring; teacups and girdles, and an overbearing Aunt who makes life hell. The After is Corrick and the uncovered truth about a magical necklace. It is the Wild West, and it is an adventure that could very well change everything.
K. Lynn Smith is an award winning artist and writer from the Mid-Michigan area. She is the writer and artist of the western comic PLUME, published by Devil's Due Comics, and the series FOR GOODNESS' SAKE, and has been involved with projects such as Boom!'s GARFIELD: HIS 9 LIVES, Space Between Entertainment's AFTERGLOW, Source Point Press' HOPE, and Scout Comic's LOOT.
It’s been a while since I read this, but I remember loving this unique western fantasy with some crazy plot twists. The art is fantastic, and I absolutely ADORE Corrick.
Content can be harsh though, so not for kids or anyone who wishes to avoid the following content: moderately graphic death, language (s**t, b*****d, a use or two of the Lord’s name), some creepy magic, and some strong innuendo by a prostitute character.) A lot of character death and a bittersweet ending.
I bought the omnibus on the recommendation of a good friend, not knowing what to expect except his promise I was going to love it. He didn't let me down: this comic is fun, thrilling, and impossible to put down. I loved every second of it.
First of all, I have to say I love the artwork. The color palette is beautiful and the gold of Corrick's eyes really sparkles on the page. It's such a nice change from these rusty, cowboy comics.
The story is just superb. Think Indiana Jones meets the Wild West. I love Vesper's character, she's immediately relatable, spunky, and fun. The need for revenge flows through her and drives so many characters in this book, a theme that is explored from every which way. While I would love to see a live action movie, I think the comic is so spot on it can't get any better than this.
I don't even know how to properly review it. I just want to shove it at people and say 'READ'. Which I guess is how I got here in the first place!
A couple of years ago on Free Comic Book Day, K. Lynn Smith was signing copies of her books at a shop in Clawson, Michigan. She was also signing the free comic she did the art for. I talked to her for a bit while my son and I waited in line to get into the store, & then said what the hell and bought the omnibus version of "plume" even though it was expensive. But I like to support women who make comics since it's such a dude-centric world. After having it on my shelf since then, I finally got around to reading it and I'm kicking myself for waiting this long because it is so good. It's like a fantasy Western story? And I typically don't dig either of those genres. Plume has great characters, a compelling story, & awesome art. If you dig graphic novels and comics you should read this.
Vesper and Corrick’s relationship is so much fun to read, and it’s so much fun to watch other people reacting to their relationship. The artwork isn’t groundbreaking, but it is pretty good throughout. The biggest issue with this graphic novel is that it is so fast paced that it sometimes struggles to hit the emotional beats of the story. The story definitely didn’t go where I was expecting, and that was pleasantly surprising. However, once again the pacing of the story, and what I realised the obvious time and location jumps between issues made it harder to always navigate the story. This was especially true when Vesper and Corrick got separated.
K. Lynn Smith is one of my favorite artist, so I had to splurge and get the omnibus for her series PLUME and it did not disappoint. This was a great mix of fantasy, adventure, and mystery that is set in the past during the Wild West. Who could want more than that?
I really enjoyed the story and characters Smith created. They all felt believable and one could understand their motives for what they did. There were a lot of twists and turns and I was surprised much of the time. If you enjoy Indiana Jones or Trigun, you will definitely enjoy this series!
many things are weak here: from character arks to basic character motivation (which for the supporting characters makes no sense whatsoever). language, social norms have nothing to do with actual Wild West. cultural and historic accuracy are really bad. HOWEVER. I had a great time reading this comic and it kept me curious and involved! I can recommend it if you just want to relax and read a grasping story. :) Despite I could guess how it will end like on the page 208, I still couldn't wait to read it! So enjoy :) It is cute.
Really well-done, both the story and the artwork. Even among all the action scenes, Smith can get great mileage out of a page just full of facial expressions. And it's pretty neat having a fantasy story in a Western setting. (Or is it a Western with fantasy elements? Either way!)
Well I knew I'd love this going in (I backed the kickstarter) but even I was blown away!
So glad I own this!
If you like westerns/Victorian/magic/kick arse female protagonists - then I urge you to give this a try. The Omnibus is gorgeous but not at all required to love this story. I have bought her next epic sight unseen - K. L. Smith is an auto buy for me and I am happy for it
Western fantasy with touches of Lovecraftian otherworldliness, but the real story of Vesper and Corrick could take place in any sort of world and would still be compelling as all get out. Appreciated the perpetual subversion of tropes throughout, with just enough glimmers underneath to suggest a more complex story.
I'm in love with this. I actually read the full omnibus (just released) so it's the whole finished story. It's SOOOOO PRETTY!!!!!!!! Ah I love these characters. Highly, highly recommended.
Please, read this beautiful book. Stunning artwork, gorgeous storytelling, and a cast of characters that enthralls and captures you from page one. Bless.
Reasons for rounding up: -Genre! -Art style -Ties in to art style: depiction of magic -Also ties in to art style: depictions of emotion, blended anger and fear, determination, etc. -The rather open ending, which I enjoyed despite it being predictable
Things I didn't like so much: -Characters were predictable, borderline flat -Since the characters were predictable, the plot was predictable; I can't say that I was surprised by anything in the story -One of the characters is a prostitute, so she offers quite a bit of innuendo to the party (and sass, which was hilarious, but innuendo generally isn't my cup of tea, so...) -There's a bit of cursing; given the setting I can't say it was unexpected, so this is more of a note for other potential readers than something that put me off (if there had been any more cursing, it would've bothered me)
This book is great, the art is wonderful, the story is poetic, the characters are fun, believable, and engaging. I feel bad about rating it 4 stars, but I only 5 star rate books that change my life, or that I get obsessed with. I highly recommend you pick it up if you get the chance.
The art is good but I'm really not into the tone of all the dialogues and the overall series. (Now I'm glad I didn't back the kickstarter when it was around.)
