No Good Deed; a Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
No Good Deed - goes unpunished or unrewarded?

You decide in this AU tale of debts and repayments, good deeds and bad.

While there is some romance and a happily ever after for our dear characters, this story centers more on the relationships between George Darcy, Fitzwilliam Darcy and George Wickham. Do not expect the usual suspects to always behave in the usual ways. Some OOC.

If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us. ~ Hermann Hesse

Early in his life – the day of his Christening – Fitzwilliam Darcy and his parents are saved from a murderous madman by Mr. Wickham, the Darcy’s steward. In his gratitude, George Darcy promises to stand as Godfather to Mr. Wickham’s yet unborn child. The Wickhams name their child George to honor his Godfather.

George Darcy bestows every advantage on young George that he gives to his own son. Early in life, the elder Darcy is rewarded with what seems like love and respect. But George Wickham has secrets to hide.

Today I felt pass over me
A breath of wind from the wings of madness.
~ Charles Baudelaire

Psychopath: a person with a psychopathic personality, which manifests as amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationships, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience, etc.

When the boys are as young as eight years, George is manipulating Mr. Darcy. George Darcy believes that his son, Will, lies. He believes Will is destructive. He believes Will is a thief. He believes Will is a snob who refuses to play with the son of a steward.

Again and again, he punishes Will for George’s misbehavior.

Lady Anne cautions her husband that he should investigate the offenses further and not blindly believe George Wickham.

So does her brother, the current Viscount, father of two sons who also dislike George.

So does Bingley, the father of Charles who is nearly killed in an attack from George.

So does Wickham, Sr., the father of George.

Yet, time and time again, George Darcy puts his faith in George Wickham.

A precious liquid, a poison dearer than that of the Borgias — because it is made from our blood, our health, our sleep, and two-thirds of our love — we must be stingy with it. ~ Charles Baudelaire

Young Will’s life is saddened further by the death of his Mother and made even more impossible when the boys are sent to the same school.

George is successful in charming the headmaster at school. He convinces everyone at school (including Will) that he is the illegitimate son of George Darcy and that George will disinherit Will and name him heir. He impersonates Will and defrauds nearby merchants. And when he is older, he begins offenses of a sexual nature.

Still George Darcy believes his son is at fault.

Most men are within a finger's breadth of being mad. ~ Diogenes

Sociopath: a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

And then, the boys grow up. And George becomes dangerous to more than just Will.

A crisis comes. Finally, George Darcy opens his eyes. But is it too late?

Love blooms. Oddly, I found the interactions between our dear couples to be less compelling than the story of George Wickham. Usually, chapters spent with the couple falling in love are my favorite parts, but here it is like waiting for the other shoe to drop. And when the shoe drops, it is a Hob-Nail Boot!

This is an unpublished web only JAFF which means I shan't be critiquing on grammar, spelling or length. We expect, nay demand, our Free FF to be lengthy and since it is written as a serial over months or years there is a level of repetition that seems annoying when read as a completed story.

This is a very unusual P&P that turns much of p&P on it's head. And it needs a trigger warning of verbal and emotional abuse of children.

We begin a long time ago when the world was new and before Fitzwilliam Darcy is born. This is a story that is predominantly from the Darcy family's POV. We learn why the Darcys were so grateful to Mr. Wickham. Oh this brings me to another point because a good portion of the book takes place when your favorite P&P characters are children and teens the people called Messrs. Darcy, Bingley & Wickham are the fathers of the P&P characters. Mrs. Darcy's & Lady Catherine's father is the Earl, Mr. Gardiner and the Viscount are friends with Mr. Bingley (Sr.) which is how both Darcys become friends with the Bingleys

In this world Lizzy and Jane meet George Darcy when they are 6 & 8 respectively. George Darcy's favoritism toward Wickham could be subtitled 'Making of a Serial Killer'. Darcy is continually berated by his father and his father completely refuses to listen to anyone else regarding his illogical and inappropriate favoritism for little Georgie. This will lead to George and others assuming that he is Darcy's natural child.

Meanwhile off in Meryton Lizzy is suffering a similar fate from completely deranged Mrs. Bennet. Leading to her and Jane spending a great deal of time with the Gardiners and Lizzy becoming 'friends' with Mr. Darcy (Sr.)

This book is chock full of angst and adventure. While Lizzy & Darcy do have big parts in the second half the book is really not about them it is a family saga. There are a few too many places of just pointlessness but it is very good.

Blurb: “No Good Deed - goes unpunished or unrewarded? You decide in this AU tale of debts and repayments, good deeds and bad. This was a long, long story. It was 49 chapters with an epilogue as the 50th chapter. There was a lot of angst as I absolutely wanted to smash Darcy senior over the head with his arrogance and distrust of his son Will. George Wickham was a ‘bad seed’ and you will know what I mean if you’ve ever seen that movie. He was everything that was evil and George Darcy refused… refused to see it. I mean to the point of nearly disowning his own son. Grrrrr!

I loved this Elizabeth even though in this story she was very young. Our timeline started many years before canon and many things happened that put Mr. Bennet in a worse situation than we have seen before. I loved the friendship between the senior men… Matlock, Darcy, Bingley and Gardiner. Now that was one fine group of planners and shakers.

Because their children were much younger, many of the traits that we didn’t like in canon were nipped in the bud. Caroline being one example.

Wosedwew wrote an amazing review. All I can say is read what she wrote as I agree completely. This story was full of love, hate, revenge, retaliation, murder, retribution, restoration, courage, salvation, and that inner strength that propels someone to do the right thing. It presented the reader with marvelous page time between ODC. D&E are so cute and smart. I love how they came about planning their life together. It is so sweet.

Since this was an unpublished work, there is no need to discuss errors or how it could be trimmed. That is a given. Just read it. I highly recommend it.
