Quick and Clever Watercolour Pencils

Rate this book
This book is aimed at those of you who’ve always been a bit scared of painting on location for the simple reason that setting up equipment outdoors is a magnet for people coming up to look at you and, worse, making suggestions or criticizing. Here, with a minimum of equipment – a sketchbook, a tin of watercolour pencils, one brush, a tiny pot of water or the nearest puddle – you can capture the likeness, colour and essence of your subject without needing easels or other such attentionattracting paraphernalia.

A very practical introduction to Watercolor Pencils

Enjoyed this book as I've always wanted to try out watercolor pencils but needed a bit of convincing. "Quick and Clever Watercolor pencils" by showing how portable, and once one practices the few techniques, easy and forgiving this medium is to use.
The author's enthusiasm for outdoor painting is evident throughout the book and is full of very useful tips in this regard more than achieved this prerequisite.
I have the Kindle version so the images are tiny and need to be zoomed quite a bit to view the painting. This will not be the case with the hard copy of the book so good reason to go in for this a printed book.

Beautiful paintings, well thought out instruction

My only complaint is the the illustrations were much to small even after taping on them to make bigger on kindle, and due to the small size she enlarging there is significant image quality lost

Good information and instruction but ...

Picture size seems to be the most common complaint and rightfully so but the information and instruction are what was important to me ... you could be drawing any picture and the lessons remain the same.

Great ideas for plein air journaling

I have used watercolor pencils for years and have not used even a fraction of the techniques that the author demonstrates in this book. I'm very excited to get started. One of the things I wish was easier to see in the ebooks are the beginning photos. It might be my screen, but I have some trouble seeing how he starts. The page just looks white to me, even though the instructions say to draw this or that. I'm learning to skip ahead... 😉
Just for educational purposes.

I use other brands of w/c pencils such as Faber-Castell and Derwent, as well as a lone Steadler Karat.( No clue how that last one snuck into my kit. I must have liked the color or it was on sale. It is a lovely turquoise. 😄 ) The instructions work just fine no matter what brand pencils you enjoy. Do be aware that some pencils won't have the color printed on the outside, so you may want to go through your personal stash and label them for your own reference. It can save you some time and mental frustration. It gets irritating if you lack a common vocabulary with an author.

Anyhow, I've been playing with the projects in this book all week, and it's been great fun. I also whipped out my new Winsor & Newton Field Pocket Set and used it for some of the washes.
I think you will enjoy this book and the projects, too. I definitely recommend this book for beginner, intermediate, and experienced painters. Even though I've been painting for decades, I picked up some cool tips. I think you might, too. Have fun!
9/10 ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
PS: I made a very helpful fold-up kit for my pencils and tools. I made it to be machine washable because plein air = outdoors. You can find it in "Sew What! Bags" by Lexie Barnes. The book on Kindle Unlimited and the kit does NOT require a sewing machine. But it goes faster with one...

cartoonish, not a good rep of what watercolor pencils can achieve

First of all, I viewed on a large iPad so I feel like it is a good representation of what a printed book would show. Sadly, there aren’t really any books on using watercolor pencils, and this book unfairly shows the realism that can be achieved with this medium. The illustrations are all cartoonish or perhaps what a quick sketchbook would show. Watercolor pencils can be used as under layers, backgrounds, and realism. That’s the book most of us would want in a watercolor pencil instruction book. The only redeeming quality in this book is that there are many step by step illustrations. However, we aren’t even shown the full image until near the end. And the images are way too tiny. They make up a tiny part of a page. So, it is challenging to follow along. I know that Charles Evans is a proclaimed artist, but I feel this isn’t illustrative of his work.

An interesting little piece of illustrated literature for the coloured pencil, pastel
or charcoal er's out there,
who do not want to set up and paint on a picnic but want to relax, nibble, munch, quaff
and draw with colourful intent regardless of the weather, location or company :-)

Do not be fooled. Quick and clever does not mean simple and easy to learn from. A complex book which has nothing to offer to the beginning. Nothing at all.

A quick read

You can read the book easily and quickly. Also, if you want to follow him, you can follow his instructions and generate the paintings.

Very good primer for using watercolor pencils. The scenes are from England but still provide basic techniques and skills.
