Great rhymes here--simple but evocative of all the fun a day at the beach can bring. I wasn't wild about the illustrations (they seemed to lack any sort of distinctive style) but that's just me.

My kids have been obsessed with this book since 2018. Our copy is getting old and faded. *Ahem* I mean, well loved. ❤️

In my experience, children's books about the beach include: waves, sand castles, buckets and shovels. "Beach Day" breaks the mold. Deviled eggs, naps, packing up all the stuff, using dishes from lunch to make a boat for a rubber duck. These are all things that should be a part of every beach day.

This is consistently one of my storytime faves for a summer storytime. the gentle rhyme is magical. It makes me want to curl up and take a sun baked end of beach day nap.

Waves roar,
Rush, and soar!
Rolling, crashing
To the shore.

Premise/plot: Beach Day was originally published as a hardcover picture book in 2001. It is newly reprinted in board book format. This board book CELEBRATES a fun day at the beach--a fun day OUTDOORS--and the celebration is ALL VERSE.

My thoughts: Those that know me know that I can be harsh when it comes to books written in rhyme. I have nothing but praise to offer for Karen Roosa's Beach Day. Her rhymes go above and beyond my expectations or standards. Lovely rhythm and rhyme throughout. Everything feels NATURAL and never forced.

Waves lapping,
Babies napping.
On the water
Sails are snapping.
Launch a boat,
Help Father float,
Build a castle
With a moat.

Roosa, Karen Beach Day Out, BOARD BOOK. HMH, 2001. $8. 9781328910691

This is a book about a family who goes to a have a day at the beach. There is playing, swimming, watching boats, a picnic lunch, and more. Lovingly illustrated with fun and warm illustrations.

The rhyming scheme in the book is wonderfully crafted. Other than the part where children get covered in sunblock, this book depicts everything you could possibly want to do at the beach. I wish I had a beach days like this growing up! Children will love to spot and point to the little details in this book and at the end it includes some items to search for. Not sure why a 2001 book was still up for review, it doesn’t say anywhere on it that it’s a re-release.

PRE-K – ADVISABLE

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Age: K - 5
Illustrations: I didn't love the pictures they were to fake.
Gist: This story is about a beach day filled with fun. How you see all the kids running around having fun, you have breeze and sand between your toes. How this is a time to spend with your family eating good food, and playing in the water. Then when the day comes to an end you pack up off your things, and go home with grins on your face.
Curriculum Connection: This book has great rhyming, and also you can talk with the kids about their happy places.

A cute read to prepare for a visit to the beach. Charming illustrations and text that flows nicely make this a nice choice for a red aloud worth young toddlers and preschoolers. The story follows a group throughout their day at the beach, from morning to evening. There were lots of different activities featured from the typical sandcastles and swimming to more mundane like eating lunch to more exciting like jet skis.

This is a read-what-you see book, so there is no storyline but it has good descriptive words for the beach & the illustrations are beautiful. It’s skippable but I also could see it being a good read to provide an understanding of what to expect from a trip to the beach. It just wasn’t an overly exciting read but my children seemed to enjoy it. I would check it out again, not for an every day book but for a beach-related need.

I am reading this book for a Beach theme storytime and it's ok, but a bit boring and a bit long for three and under. I was able to condense it by skipping pages and trying to make the flow enjoyable to read. It's not a bad book, but a bit generic.

A rhyming books about visiting the beach. I think I used it for storytime a few years ago (before I started using Goodreads) but I don't recall. Making a note of it here for my beach shelf for future reference. It's a good title for the theme.

This was a really lovey story about a normal day at the beach, recalling our own trip to the beach in August. Kait liked all the rhyming words.

This is a perfect summer book for preschoolers. The poetry is gentle, with wonderful rhymes and rhythms. It's short, so not too much.

My 5 year old really liked the illustrations - they are very kid-friendly, with pictures of families and friends playing at the beach. It was full of familiar activities that she could relate to.

Here are a few lines:
"Waves roar,
Rush and soar!
Rolling, crashing
To the shore.

Sparkling spray,
Jeweled array,
Water-skiers,
On their way."

This is a great story about all of the fun things to do at the beach. Like water ski, play in the sand, have a picnic and playing with friends. This book is full of wonderful short rhyming text with loads of colorful pictures that kids can really enjoy. Kids will also be able to enjoy the same activities that the kids in the book did.

This is a great book geared towards toddler and preschool age children.

This book is about a family that goes to the beach on a hot day, they enjoy every moment of it, from the water to the sand. I like this book because the pictures are clear and colorful for the children. When reading this book, it contains rhyming so the story can have a flow to it. I think children will find this book interesting and they can enjoy it for circle time as a simple relatable story.

This book describes a perfect beach day. From building sand castle to playing in the waves it's always a good time at the beach. This is a very simple book that would be great to read to kid ages 3-6.

Beach Day shows all the fun a family can have at the beach, especially the kids. To me though, the story did not have a lot of dimension or plot. It was mildly cute, but did not have a major lesson or anything to really set it apart from another book.
