Also writes under April Asher.

April Asher, aka April Hunt, was hooked on romantic stories from the time she first snuck a bodice-ripper romance out from her mom's bedside table. She now lives out her own happily-ever-after with her college-sweetheart husband, their two children, and a cat who thinks she's more dog—and human—than feline. By day, April dons dark blue nursing scrubs and drinks way too much caffeine. By night, she still consumes too much caffeine, but she does it with a laptop in hand, and from her favorite side of the couch.

From the far left cushion, April Asher pens laugh-out-loud romantic comedies with a paranormal twist, but when she’s not putting her characters into embarrassing situations with supernatural entities, she also writes high-octane romantic suspense as April Hunt, her thrill-seeking alter ego.

A combination of romantic suspense with a brothers-best-friend trope, I mean that just sounds amazing just like that. And this book was exactly that - amazing. It was so intriguing for so many different reasons. We had serial killer on the loose, our heroine unknowingly being stalked, the heat between her and Knox, and then all of Knox's family drama. It might sound like a lot, but it definitely wasn't, and no storyline took over the other, instead they just worked together.

Zoey and Knox were great characters and I loved the heat that sparked between them. It was really fun to see how they just couldn't deny that they wanted each other. Even though Knox tried to keep his distance. I love those kinds of romances where there's just so much passion between characters that it can't be contained.

There were a few times that I felt a little lost in the writing and there were scenes where it read more like a middle of a series novel rather than the first. Especially when information about Zoey and her brother came out and it was almost as if we were supposed to already know something about them that I didn't know. And there were a couple of other things that happened that I felt like that as well. But it didn't bother me too much and wasn't on anything too major.

Overall, if you're a fan of suspenseful stories or a fan of a heather brothers-best-friend book then this is the one for you. You'll be more and more captivated with every turn of the page.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Starting off a new series, Deadly Obsession, introduces us to the Steele family. A group of four brothers, their cousin Grace, and their lifelong friends, siblings Cade and Zoey. After her fifth heart surgery, Zoey decides that she is going to take life by storm. This includes getting out of the Dungeon and taking her crime scene investigating skills top level, investigating crime scenes as soon as they are found. It also includes going for it with the eldest Steele brother, Knox.
Knox has stayed away from D.C. for two years, but his brothers are starting to pressure him to make a decision on joining their new security start up Steele Ops and his best friend's little sister had a set back with her heart, the little sister he has found himself caring more for than big brother Cade would like.
When the Beltway Cupid Killer brings everyone together to work on catching them, Knox finds himself unable to keep resisting Zoey and thinking maybe home really is where the heart is.

If you're fan of romantic suspense, you're going to like this. Deadly Obsession is trope heavy, group of former military men, best friend's little sister, no-strings sex agreement that goes sideways, a teased second chance romance, and a serial killer haunting the edges. Hunt's themes and characters are well traveled but her ease of writing and dash of charm will still have people well read in the sub-genre enjoying the ride and newbies captured.

This was clearly a start to a series book, the focus was heavier on showing and developing relationships around characters rather than more on the outside story. The serial killer gets povs that I thought created a great creepy factor and helped add to the story but in the second half they kind of disappear and we lose this story thread for awhile. I thought the author did a great job with giving clues to who the killer was, it becomes kind of clear about halfway through, then the reader gets to enjoy being in the know and feeling anxiety whenever they appear on the page.

The storyline of Knox staying away for two years was probably the weakest, I'm not sure I fully understood the reasoning. His mess up that endangered other Rangers and then abandoning his brother Roman when he was in a hospital in Germany, was mish mashed together and we never got a clear concise story of how Knox messed up. The tension between the brothers and Knox as they work to set-up their Steele Ops security firm, under the cover of a brewery named Iron Bars, was a little mish mashy too, it is just something you have to go with as the security firm is obviously what will be the hub for the series.

This could never get old. That heat. That excitement every time he touched her. Instead of claiming a new piece of her every time they were together, Zoey Wright, without a doubt, claimed a small piece of him.

I really enjoyed Zoey's character, she has unrequited childhood love for Knox and lusts after him but she never lets him get away with anything, she calls him on his b.s.. It was a sweet additive to have Knox making a secret hospital visit to Zoey too, helps add foundation to him liking her as there is a lot happening in this book and Knox and Zoey's relationship doesn't always get the spotlight it deserves. Their no-strings sex pact felt thrown in, because it doesn't seem to completely fit in with Zoey's feelings, yes she is taking more chances but she seems to completely forget about all those deep feelings for Knox that were fed to the reader earlier. They have some cute back and forth and I believed in their connectivity as a couple. I do wish we could have gotten a bit more of a focus on their developing relationship, they go from pseudo lying to themselves about having sex to just sliding into being together; not a lot of struggle or heartfelt moments.

There were some missing pieces and some underdeveloped characters, Knox's reason for staying away for two years, Zoey's boss Mason seems to disappear, and a character connected to Zoey and Cade kind of just gets thrown in, but overall, romantic suspense readers will feel welcomed and comfortable in this series Hunt is setting up. Zoey lusts after Knox but she doesn't let him get away with anything and Knox is the protective trying not to fall for the best friend's little sister, all surrounded with a hint of danger. Zoey's brother Cade and Knox's cousin Grace look to be the next couple and the tension felt between them here, has me excited to dive into their story.

I picked this book up at a convention and read the back cover copy. Then I promptly put it down - it seemed to have every cliche in the book and the main hero's name is Knox Steele - please! Well, something made me grab it again - I thought to get a chuckle out of the stereotypes and cheesy set up. It sat on my shelf until I was in Cupboard Maker books and it was one of their book club books. Michelle, the owner never picks bad books for her clubs....SO I went to Utah last week for skiing and I brought it along as a light read. I really enjoyed it! The characters are well drawn and have depth and complexity. The writing is good. The plot and ending are satisfying! And lesson learned, don't judge a book by it's cover copy or cover or anything really until I've read at least 20 pages. Also always listen to Michelle!

Of course I have a quibble , but it's minor. And I already bought book 2 to be read when I finally get to the beach! Romantic suspense books are my holiday books!

There’s always a special excitement I have when there’s the new start of a series particularly in the sub-genres of romance that I look for. April Hunt’s new Steele Ops series was one I plunged into because, well, new year, new series, new start.

Sort of.

Combining the brother’s-best-friend trope with a typical serial-killer storyline, ‘Deadly Obsession’ is very much an establishing book that sets the context for the series. And thus far, I did like the cocooned bonds and the closeness between the characters and Hunt’s decision to write a somewhat different heroine—whose illness gave her cause to rise above her circumstances again and again—is quite remarkable.

There were no surprises here, where characters or plot were concerned at least: Zoey being in the line of fire, Knox’s non-committal stance towards the will-they-won’t-they relationship, his denseness that needed a huge awakening in the form of mortal danger to Zoey to dissipate, the ‘sex-only’ agreement that you just know will fail. They’re well-worn tropes really, but April Hunt’s engaging writing carried the story and I did, by and large, have a good and easy time making my way through the suspense—even guessed who the perp was well in advance.

There’s much talk about seizing life by the horns especially when faced with one’s mortality nonetheless: Zoey did come across as desperate and overcompensating for having missed out on so much at times, just as Knox’s indecisive mixed signals grated along with the reminders about how he didn’t stick with women at all.

By and large though, I did have an easy time reading this and did find the story quite engaging despite the well-trodden issues in romance that authors do like to take up. Hunt’s writing has a certain kind of clarity here that I can appreciate and there’s enough development of the secondary characters whose coming stories (no doubt) I would like to follow up on.

ARC ebook and paperback version

This is Hunt’s first book from Steele Ops Series and my first book from this author. I’m happy to say this was a pretty great read that included some of my favorites topics in novels. It’s a suspense romance with crime scene investigation, a serial killer on the loose, delicious military alpha men, sassy and strong heroines and a friends to lovers combo.

We get introduced to the whole gang of Steele and Wright family. Deadly Obsession book focus on Zoey Wright and Knox Steele.

Zoey Wright is the new CSI trying to bring down the latest serial killer in town. Knox Steele, sexy ex Ranger and big brother in the Steele gang decided to come back home to DC after two years away. He was escaping his trouble past but most of all he was escaping his feelings towards his childhood friend and best friend sister, Zoey.

Besides action and intrigue, this books brings a lot of romance and family dynamics. Looking forward to the next additions to the Steele Ops series.

Fun page turning suspense

Recommended by an alpha hero loving friend, this story was enjoyable and entertaining escape from the day. Knox was a bit OTT but not overbearing. Zoey allowed emotions to rule her, but when she got out of her own way, she found everythng was right where she needed it.
Eager to dive into Grace’s story.

This is my first book by April Hunt and, while rough in spots, I enjoyed it overall. There were several places that the plot could have taken a different turn and the baddie wasn't very hard to figure out. The friends that catch fire trope was well played here. As the first of the Steel Ops Series it wasn't much in the way of an "Ops" plot, but set up the coming books and characters very nicely.

Zoey Wright was born with a congenital heart problem and has been watching as life passes by. With her last surgery she has decided she is done with watching and wants to participate and that starts with a change in her job from lab rat crime evidence processor to on scene CSI agent. She is also tired of playing it safe with her personal life and when her childhood crush returns to town she is more than ready to make her move.

Knox Steel is a former Army Ranger who has returned home, after being gone for over two years, to help his brothers open Steel Ops, an elite private security firm. He comes from a very tight family and circle of friends and his missing persons act and sudden reappearance is a surprise every one but Zoey, who is thrilled he is back. Zoey is not the same girl he remembers growing up with. She is now a take charge, don't mess with me woman and all the more alluring because of her new attitude, especially since he has had a thing for her for years.

The serial killer attacking women in DC has a type and that type matchs Zoey to a tee. When her condo is broken into and trashed the men in her life go into protective mode, exactly what Zoey will not stand for. Knox is the only male around her who understands her need to do her job and stand on her own. But Knox is more that a little concerned and plans to stick real close to Zoey until this sicko is captured.

I have to give some serious props to this author. She put you in the head of a serial killer, and it MAJORLY creeped me out! I was drawn into that perspective more than I expected to be.
Thankfully, this intensity was broken up by the amazing chemistry between Zoey and Knox. This relationship came across realistic and genuine. I never felt like these couldn't be real people. Yes, Knox tried to be alpha male with her, but she soundly put him in his place. At the same time, he truly saw her strength and respected her. He stood up for her when people wouldn't hear what she had to say. She is strong, and at the same time had a beautiful vulnerability. Though she falls under the trope of "sick girl" you see her stand up for herself in more ways than one, and prove that she isnt a sick little girl anymore.
Consent was clear with these two, and made to look sexy. There is a particular element of this that made me very happy that the author made that clear to the readers.
Though the plot of this novel made it feel like a novel, these characters and what they were going through felt very real to me. I will be reading more from this author.

Knox Steele is back home after staying away for so long and he's determined not to stick around, but only one person can throw a wrench in his plans - Zoey Wright- and now that it's obvious that someone dangerous is fixated on her, he's determined to make sure that she is safe before he leaves.

Zoey is fighting for normalcy after a lifetime of being sick and while her bid for independence is understandable, the over-protectiveness of her brother and the Steele boys is also something a reader can empathize with. In fact, my favorite thing about this book is that even though Zoey is cleared cherished by her brother and the Steele boys, they still give her room to explore what and how she wants but are ready to step in and protect her if needed.

This book is literally the best thing I've read all year and it's not even close. Ms. Hunt combined a number of tropes - best friend's younger sister, ex-military black ops, security firm, stalker - but somehow it worked, and the creepy factor was especially through the roof.

Knox's rationale for staying away from his family could have been explored a little deeper than was done, but it did not really impact the overall story in my opinion. The story was straightforward, and the stalker was easy to guess, but I think it served to draw me into the story and it was like screaming at the TV when characters cannot see the danger lurking, but you can.

First books in a series can be a hit or miss since there is a heavy focus on building the series up, but this was a hit in every way and Zoey and Knox's storyline did not suffer at all while the author was laying the foundation for the series. If anything, I'm counting down the days to the next book in the series and I've been inspired to go back and re-read the author's back list.

Deadly Obsession (Steele Ops #1) by April Hunt
4.5 stars
M/F Romance
Triggers: Murder, Stalking
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Knox is back home for the first time in a few years and not many people are "excited" about it. While his family is coming to terms with the fact that Knox was able to stay away so long, Knox is contemplating whether or not he's going to stay or take a job 3000 miles away. But, despite being back home, his best friend's sister, Zoey is not an easy woman to forget.

Zoey has lived her life in and out of hospitals due to a heart condition. Now that she's finally an adult and on the mend, she has taken a job that she has always wanted. She is right in the thick of things when a serial killer decides to take up residence in her city.

Zoey has to contend with overprotective family and friends, her own insecurities and a feeling that something just isn't quite right. When Knox comes waltzing back in her life, she can't help but want to be a little careless - reckless even, with her body and heart. She never really got over Knox and even though she is warned off by several people, she can't help her feelings or the chemistry that zings between her and Knox.

You have several story lines in this book. A lot is happening and while I enjoyed it all, I thought that Knox's story was somewhat lacking. He stayed away, but you never truly know why, other than he was not in a good space. Then you have his relationship with his brothers and his best friend, Cade. Zoey is trying to figure out who she is as an adult. We catch glimpses of her finding herself, but then she's flung back in to the meek woman who needs protecting. Finally, you throw in the dynamic of his brothers new business venture and it's just a lot going on.

This was a great story, if somewhat predictable. You can guess the killer fairly easily, but it doesn't detract from the story at all. I can't wait for the next book, as it seems incredibly interesting already, given the dynamic between the two characters for the next one, seen in book 1.

I heard about this one from a friend who was gifted a copy from the publisher. I’m always looking for a good thriller, so I grabbed it from the library.

I really liked Zoey and Knox. She’s stronger than everyone thinks and wants to do new things. He’s a straight up alpha with a past guilt. Together they have a long history and loads of button pushing and sass. I loved all of the brothers and this family in general.

Plot wise it was good. There were a few suspects and every time I thought I had it figured out, something would shift. Getting the killer’s POV was an added and super creepy bonus. I definitely would have liked to actually read some of conversations at the end, instead of the brush off of “they talked all through the night”, but maybe I’m being greedy.

Overall, it was a great and captivating read and I look forward getting my hands on the next book in the series.

Romantic suspense is one of my recent favorite subgenres. Since it’s a newer fave, I am always on the hunt for new-to-me authors and series to fall in love with. DEADLY OBSESSION fit the bill, the first book in a new series about two families starting an elite private security firm. This story follows CSI agent Zoey and former Army Ranger Knox Steele, her childhood crush. Bonus, the book is set in Washington, D.C., where I live, so I enjoyed a little taste of home while reading.

The pros: I really enjoyed the banter and seemingly effortless world building in this book. The romance was definitely front and center, and the yearning between the main characters was giving me life. Zoey and Knox have a lot of family and friends who seem like they’ll all get their own books (fingers crossed) but the introduction of each character was easy to follow along with and the characterization was strong for each of them.

I also loved the addition of Zoey’s congenital heart defect. From the author’s note, I could tell that Ms. Hunt was exceptionally well educated on the subject. She pulled off the difficult task of making a serious medical issue an interesting part of the plot and Zoey’s character without weighing down the story.

The cons: While I thought the suspense plot was well done, I was a little disappointed in the early heavy-handed hints about who the killer was. I enjoyed the book a lot more when I was still guessing. I also thought the crime scene protocol/Knox’s ability to just jump into a police investigation was a little ridiculous. I tried to suspend my disbelief because it is fiction, but there were a few times I rolled my eyes.

Overall, this was a solid start to what will hopefully be a fun new series. I really like Ms. Hunt’s voice as an author and I think it will only get better from here! You know I am hoping the broody brother gets a book next.

A new series by April Hunt (Steele Ops #1).

Zoey Wright has spent most of her life in and out of hospitals having multiple heart surgeries for her rare heart condition. Zoey is ready to make a change and live her life to the fullest, she changes her job from working in the lab to being an actual CSI agent in the field handling some of the most gruesome murder cases in DC. Knox Steele an old friend comes back to DC after a few years to work with Zoey's brother, Cade in opening up an elite private security firm, stumbles into Zoey in a crime scene. Zoey and Knox's attraction is undeniable and this time, the new Zoey will not hold back her feelings. With the serial killer on the loose carving hearts to women's chest, the investigation brings the team together as clues hint to possibility of Zoey being a likely target.

This is my first April Hunt book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I enjoyed that the book involved some medical storyline - stemming from Hunt's medical background, her amazing characters, and wonderful story pacing. These made it for an unputdownable read. The Romantic Suspense genre is also new to me but I love a Romance read and gravitate to suspenseful reads, that when these two mashed together, it sure made for a winning combination and a fantastic reading experience for me.

I cannot wait for the next installation of this amazing series.

Why haven’t I been reading romantic suspense before?? When asked my favorite genre - I always say a tie between mystery/thriller and romance. This is the genre that combines the two!!

Deadly Obsession was a great place for me to start with the genre. Zoey is a new CSI tech who is on the task force to find DC’s serial killer. At the same time, Zoey’s brother’s best friend is back in town after being gone for years. His name is Knox Steele - is that the best romance hero name or what?!?

There were a few things that required a healthy suspension of disbelief - but I was along for the ride. It seemed like a great mix of romance and suspense. A couple parts got creepy enough that I couldn’t read it right before bed. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series!!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review. This book is available now!

Deadly Obsession by April Hunt is the First book in the Steele Ops Series. This is the story of Zoey Wright and Knox Steele.
Knox left town a few years back to make a life for himself. Now he is back at home being pressured to take part in the the family's Security Firm. Unsure if he is going to stay or take another job miles away is up in the air for him. One thing that is making decisions hard is his best friends sister, Zoey. Zoey is always had to forget but when he finds her in the middle of searching for serial killer it makes him very protective of her. Zoey has always been protected all her life but has not taken to stepping out of the protective bubble to put her wishes first. Which is being a new CSI agent on the hunt to find a killer which is also putting her to be working closely with Knox.
Exciting Read!!

This book is the start of a brand new series and what a great way to kick it off! There is a little of everything going on in this book. There's family drama, suspense, action, and of course romance. While it may appear like the typical best friend's little sister trope the story it's wrapped up in makes it so much more. We get to know all the amazing characters that make in Steel Ops and I for one am looking forward to all the great stories to come. Anyone who loves a great romantic suspense doesn't want to miss Knox and Zoey's story. I definitely recommend it.

Zoey Wright has taken charge of her life. Born with a serious heart defect, and having gone through several major surgeries, she has just begun a new job as a CSI agent. In her current case, she is more than a bit nonplussed when someone she had a serious crush on when she was younger is pulled into it. Zoey must fight her feelings for Knox Steele and focus on the fact that a serial killer seems determined to kill as many women as possible.

Knox is in town because he and his brothers are intent on opening an elite private security firm. When he happens upon a crime scene, he is rather disturbed to see that his best friend's little sister is working the case. Well, she is not so little any longer, and Knox must fight his growing attraction to her. As much as this fight is intense, a bigger fight soon presents itself when it seems that Zoey herself might actually become a victim. So, Knox and Zoey end up together - in more ways than one.

While the romance is developing and the search for the killer ensues, readers are introduced to the other members of the Steele and Wright families. This no doubt sets the reader up for future books in this new series by April Hunt. I am thrilled that I got to read it and am eager to continue with this series. If you enjoy intrigue, romance and family, then you will be glad to read this book. I found it to be quite intense and pretty much read this book in one sitting.

Many thanks to Forever and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

I love a book full of Alpha men and strong women. I especially love military Alphas. I'm especially pleased when a book provides me with these men, lots of suspense and a sweet romance. Deadly Obsession delivered on all counts.

Knox, sigh, he's the real deal who almost blows it. He knows better than to look twice at his best friend's sister but Zoe is just too appealing to stay away. He's so perfect for her. She's strong but physically damaged. Very realistically, the people in her life tend to try to protect her and don't recognize her inner fortitude. She's so loved and her friends and family just want to be helpful. Knox doesn't want to put her in a safe tower somewhere. He doesn't want to fight her battle for her. He wants to fight with her.

Zoe's had a rough go of life. Put up for adoption young, she was lucky to find a wonderful woman who took a very sick Zoe and her brother in and gave them a great, loving home. Even so, life still throws her plenty of unpleasantness with her ongoing health issues. Her brother Cade and his friends would likely have been highly overprotective of her if she'd always been healthy but they're far more so because of her weak heart.

Zoe's stronger than she's ever been and she knows all too well how finicky life can be so she's more than ready to take chances. Learning to defend herself in a fight, working in the field at horrific crime scenes and acting on the long term crush she's had on Knox.

The story has tons of suspense on top of the back and forth of a new relationship between star-crossed lovers. Hunt has added a serial killer to the mix. So in addition to great characters and a budding romance, the reader has plenty of additional stress and mystery to keep hooked from the first page to the last.

I really enjoyed DEADLY OBSESSION and this was a great start to a brand new series. There's a lot set up for later books as we meet the loud and rambunctious Steele brothers as well as Zoey's cop brother. The serial killer storyline wanted a bit in the middle but picked back up toward the end. I just wish that we would have gotten more of Zoey working the case as a forensic investigator because it was a key part of her finding her independence and it pretty much gets dropped in the second half.

Zoey was a really fun character and I loved her fire! A lifetime of heart disease has kept Zoey from really living a normal life and her health complications have turned her brother into an overprotective bear along with the Steele brothers who are like family to Zoey. She's finally pushing for her independence but it's an uphill battle with these guys and I liked that Zoey is never afraid to speak her mind and push back. Thankfully, Knox enjoys her spirit and while he wants to protect her, he doesn't want to control her life.

A prime protector, Knox has always looked out for Zoey but his feelings are anything but brotherly. But Knox has no plans to stay in DC and he doesn't want to break Zoey's heart, let alone his own. To make matters more complicated, Knox's absence has created tension between him and his brothers and they are not giving him any slack. I'll be honest and say I didn't quite get why Knox was staying away for so long and I would have liked a little more to that part of Knox's past. Otherwise, Knox was a great hero and rode the line of alpha and sweet perfectly.

Knox and Zoey have such a rich history filled with good memories and as adults they have great chemistry. Overall, this was a really great read and I'm excited for more, especially Liam's story.

This is a great start to a new series that promises to be fantastic. In this book, a family of brothers are starting a high level security/ops agency, however, one of the brothers, Knox, doesn't want to commit.....to anything. Zoey, a talented crime scene scientist and heart patient, has been smitten with Knox for years, but Knox hasn't been interested.

While the city is dealing with a serial killer, Zoey is pushing herself hard at work despite having cardiac symptoms - that she seems to resemble the killer's target victim only adds to the tension. In the midst of this, she takes a chance with Knox, but the lines quickly become blurred.

There's a lot going on in this novel as the author sets the stage for the series. While it sounds a bit confusing, the author presents it in an engaging way that makes sense and is entertaining.

I loved the characters, from the somewhat damaged Knox to the lovely Zoey with serious health problems. It's not possible to read this book and not fall a bit in love with them.

Fans of the genre will love this book. I'm already looking forward to future books in the series. The author is on my must read authors' list.

After years of her heart condition limiting her life choices, Zoey is ready to live her life one day at a time and she's determined to live it on her terms. So she transfer from the safety of the lab to a field position and the serial case they assign her might be more than she can handle on her own.

Knox Steele isn't ready to face his family and friends after keeping away for years but Zoey has always held a special place in his heart and hearing that she's in danger has him coming back to finally face his demons.

I was hooked from page one and really clicked with geeky Zoey :) I loved her sense of humor, her optimism and her determination to go after what she wanted. She was a great heroine and I was definitely rooting for her HEA. I loved Knox - he was the ex-military alpha type that was brave, loyal and bound by a moral code you can't help but admire. I loved the fact that even though he obviously had some emotional issues to work through, his love and devotion for Zoey trumped it all. She was his everything and since realizing that his friend's little sister was the one, he's remained celibate for the last two years. It might be cheesy but I loved that he named his houseboat Angel Eyes after Zoey, who he saw as his guardian angel. I melted when he remembers that at his darkest times over the years serving his country, the memory of Zoey helped him come through it all.

This gets a bit angsty with Knox determined to get out before he lets everyone down but he has an amazing support system from the rest of the Steele brothers, from his snarky cousin Grace and especially from Zoey, who might appear fragile and naive but is actually a total bad ass!

Would I recommend? Yes, it's been awhile since I've been so excited for a new series. Not only did I love the MCs in Deadly Obsession but all the secondary characters were amazing and I can't wait to read their individual stories. Roman and Tank are at the top of my list!

Deadly Obsessions is the first book in April Hunt's new series Steele Ops. A romantic suspense with a best friends little sister trope.

Zoey is use to playing it safe with her heart condition , but after the latest surgery she decides she wants to live life to the fullest. That starts with her new job as a CSI agent even if it makes her older brother less than thrilled that she's helping hunt down a killer. When her crush and brothers best friend comes back to town she decides to add taking a chance on him to her list. Unfortunately her luck starts to change and it looks like the killer has his sights set on her.

Deadly Obsession starts out with a strong and unsettling prologue. From there the story is filled with an interesting story and contains a cast of well-developed characters. I adored all the Steele brothers and Knox was the perfect brooding alpha male that I love in a romantic suspense. Zoey was vulnerable but strong, and unique from other heroines with her medical conditions that she refused to let her hold her back. The connection and interactions between them seemed natural, and the sexual tension and chemistry was on point.

"Zoey Wright was addictive - her scent, her breathy moans and little sighs. Knowing that he'd caused them spurred him on like nothing else -"

The story is enhanced with the sections in the killer's POV and even thought I was able to figure out who the bad guy was about 3/4th of the way in it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. My only problem with the story was "problem" between our hero and heroine that causes their big rift. It just seemed a bit forced and anti climactic to me.

In the end, Deadly Obsession satisfying, and I am excited to see the other members of Steel Ops get their own stories. April Hunt is an author I will definitely be keeping an eye out for in the future.

3.5 stars

This was a fast-paced, exciting read. I liked Knox and Zoey, learning about them and their history and liked the conflict presented. I really liked the suspense element added giving it a bit of a CSI who-done-it feel. It was an intriguing read with a good amount of drama and a nice bit of sexy mixed in. I was guessing who the bad guy was and couldn't wait to find out.

I liked the build as Zoey and Knox came together. I liked all the characters involved, Knox's brothers and cousin and Zoey's brother. I am curious about the storyline between Grace and Cade and thought it set the next story in the series up well. I thought this was a great series starter, laying out characters and hinting at relationships.

There was a good start laying it all out and by 20% I was into it. This was one of those times I had a hard time putting it down because I was excited about what would happen next but at the same time, I'd get frustrated because some things felt glossed over and not flushed out. There were two characters involved that felt odd to me as well and I was left with lingering questions and a lot of why's? I’m hoping it gets addressed in the next book. Also, there was this great build is to the ending but I felt it was rushed once it got there.

Basically, I liked it a lot but had some issues. I thought the storyline was great but sometimes the execution left me wanting more. Overall I felt it was really good and plan on continuing with the series.

The first book in a new series is always fun as you get the main story as well as the building of the setting, secondary characters abd the overall feeling of the series. The suspense was from and centre in this book and Ms. Hunt had me trying to decide which of two characters was the serial killer. Add in the best friends sister, love interest and things were heating up nicely. On my toes the entire read.

Knox has returned home for the first time since he was discharged two years ago. To say his brothers are pissed at him for staying away so long is an understatement. His fear of not being enough have kept him away for too long. He has held a special place for his best friends little sister, but seeing her now really knocking him out kilter. Will he be able to stay away this time.

Zoey has heart issues and has found herself in and out of the hospital over the years. After the last scare she has decided it is time to live her life. Taking a new position and getting herself out in the field collecting evidence is exciting. Her over protective big brother isn't to happy. Is she too close to the case?

Will they find the killer? Will Knox be convinced to stay?

I am excited for the next brother to get their story.

Deadly Obsession is a great start to a new series from this author! While the tropes covered in this book are familiar, the heroine Zoey is a little bit unique in my opinion. She was born with a congenital heart defect that has resulted in five different surgeries over the course of her life, and the most recent one last year led her to make a promise to herself: to start living more and take the safe path less.

Of course that decision does not sit well with uber-overprotective big brother Cade, but Zoey has determination and spirit to spare and she will not allow him to make all the decisions in her life anymore. That includes the decision to take a new job that moves her out of the safety of the crime lab and into the field as a crime scene investigator- which she fails to tell Cade about until he arrives on scene to find her there documenting a serial killer's most recent victim. To add to her stress level, her childhood crush/ brother's best friend Knox Steele makes a reappearance in DC at her crime scene.

The Steele family lived across the street from Zoey and Cade's foster mother, and they are really just one big extended family. The author lays the foundation for this series by introducing us to all 4 Steele brothers as well as Steele cousin Grace who is also Zoey's best friend and Cade's ex (oh my, there are major unresolved issues there!). Everyone involved has a special skill set of some sort: the brothers are all veterans of different branches of the armed services, Grace is an FBI profiler, Cade is a police detective who served in the Rangers with Knox, and we already covered Zoey.

Knox's return after a 2 year absence is met with animosity from his brothers. Yes, Steele Ops was his idea. Yes, he stayed away for a few years. Maybe it's because I am an only child, but the drama associated with Knox's return felt a bit overdone to me. Cue the "will he stay or won't he" moments here. Of course he has always had a soft spot for Zoey, and seeing her now does nothing to help make his decision easier. He carries guilt for mistakes of the past and he doesn't believe he is good enough for someone like her. When it becomes clear the serial killer's focus turns to Zoey, he will have to make a choice.

Knox and Zoey have great chemistry, and I love her feisty spirit. Knox is a great mix of alpha protector and supporter as he tries to balance his need to keep her safe with her need to take charge of her own life where she can. I think mystery lovers will be able to pick out the killer's identity fairly easily but it was still fun watching it happen! Deadly Obsession was a quick and entertaining read, and I am hoping that Cade and Grace are next up on the list for this series.

Okay, the new Steele Ops series is off to a great start! I read this book fairly quickly, and although I could guess parts of the plot, I still couldn't put it down. I loved Zoey! She's been coddled her whole life, and for good reason, but she's ready to live her life outside the safe zone. Her standing up for herself just made me smile. She's just a great female lead! Then there is Knox Steele. Yum. He's a little damaged, a little alpha, and whole lot of sexy. Don't get me wrong, he has these moments where he is a total idiot, but don't we all when it comes to the people we care about? The way these two come together is so enjoyable! Plus, the suspense of whether or not Zoey might be the target of the serial killer they're all trying to catch makes this a book that keeps you captive the whole way through.
