Dorothea Hawes possesses an unusual gift. Spirits speak to her, tracing their ephemeral fingers along the edges of her thoughts, treating her to glimpses of other people’s fears and desires. It is a gift that puts her in demand, and brings her to the attention of Rachel Trask, a troubled woman desperate to make contact with the spirit of her deceased son. But it’s not until Dorothea has already pushed through the veil that she realizes Rachel’s sadness may be due to more than mere mourning…
Quenby Olson lives in Central Pennsylvania where she spends most of her time writing, glaring at baskets of unfolded laundry, and chasing the cat off the kitchen counters. She lives with her husband and five children, who do nothing to dampen her love of classical ballet, geeky crochet, and staying up late to watch old episodes of Doctor Who.
With My Own Eyes is a chilling little short story about a grieving mother and a medium that discovers an unexpected darkness lurking in the shadows. Olson delivers you into a believable and familiar time period with her beautiful prose, stunning attention to detail and well-defined characters. I highly recommend!
So, I loved her book , The Half Killed, and this was just as creepy. Poor Thea ... it's almost as though you can feel her skin crawling, and her extreme unwillingness to go through with it all. Great short story!
Readers of The Half-Killed will enjoy learning more about Dorothea Hawes' past. The prose is gorgeous as usual, and the characterization is excellent for such a short work.
