The Dogfather has one more child to marry off…but Darcy Kilcannon has no interest in her father’s matchmaking shenanigans. The youngest Kilcannon is seeking one thing only, and it’s not a husband. Darcy is ready to launch her own business in town, move into her own apartment, and become her own woman. But when she walks into the gorgeous brownstone that her father just “happened” to help her find, Darcy takes one look at the hot landlord and she knows the Dogfather has been up to his old tricks. Sure he’s a hunk and a half, but his “no pets” policy is a huge turnoff to a dog groomer who won’t dream of living without her beloved Kookie.
Joshua Ranier moved to Bitter Bark to get out of the shadow of his overbearing stepfamily and keep his shattered heart securely on ice. His only focus is his construction business, and the brownstone he’s renting and renovating…until he meets the sexy, sassy blonde tenant sneaking a fuzzy white dog even though he’s banned them because of construction dangers. Then Josh starts thinking about things he shouldn’t. And it isn’t when the rent’s due.
But when a blind dog lands on Josh’s doorstep, he needs Darcy’s help. As they race to restore little Stella’s vision and solve a mystery that’s tearing his family apart, Josh and Darcy begin to see the light, too. It will take one double dog dare, two precious puppers, and the full power of the Kilcannon clan for this couple to find their happy ever after.
I don’t know about you, but when I check out an author's bio, it’s usually because I’ve read a book I liked and wondered about the person behind it. Let's skip the formal bio and I'll give you the inside scoop on who Roxanne St. Claire really is.
First of all, call me Rocki. Everyone does. Evidently, when my mother brought me home from the hospital I seemed too scrawny and small to pull off “Roxanne” (she’d read Cyrano de Bergerac while pregnant or I would have been Judy) so they called me Rocki.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, the youngest of five (overachievers, every one), and fell in love with words and stories the summer I read Gone With The Wind. That year, for my twelfth birthday, my parents gave me a typewriter (with italic font – it was the coolest thing) and from that day on, I’ve had my fingers on a keyboard, pounding out love stories for fun. My AP English teacher taught me the two most important lessons an aspiring author ever needs: 1) verbs are the key to life and 2) a writer should get a real job. After attending UCLA and graduating with a degree in communications, I tried acting and television broadcasting. Oh, they aren’t real jobs? I learned that the hard way. I changed my last name from Zink to St. Claire because a news producer told me Roxanne Zink had too many harsh consonants for a TV personality – apparently Katie Couric didn’t get the memo. I got some fun gigs, and even met Tom Hanks when I did a guest appearance on Bosom Buddies. I liked on camera work, but wasn’t too crazy about starvation, so I moved to Boston and got that “real” job. In fact, I placed my foot on the bottom rung of the corporate ladder and didn’t look down until I’d climbed all the way up to the level of Senior Vice President at the world’s largest public relations firm. On the way up, I met the man of my dreams in an elevator. Two years later – in the same elevator! – he asked me to marry him and I wisely said yes.
I stayed in PR, moved to Miami, had a few babies, lost my home in a hurricane, built another one a few hours north and all along, I kept writing my “stories” for fun. One night, I read a particularly fabulous romance novel that changed my life for good. That night, I decided I wanted to make someone else feel as whole and happy as that author made me feel. (Everyone asks! It was Nobody’s Baby But Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.) With two small children and one big “real” job, writing my first novel wasn’t easy, but I did finish a manuscript that managed to get the attention of a literary agent. She told me to do one thing and one thing fast: write another book. (The first one is usually a “learner” book, honestly.) That second manuscript sold to Simon & Schuster’s Pocket Books and was released in 2003 as Tropical Getaway. Since then, I’ve written almost thirty more, in multiple genres, and long ago replaced the corporate ladder with the rollercoaster of publishing as a full-time novelist. Finally, writing is my real job.
Today, I live in a small beach community in Florida with my husband and two dogs. Our kids are off to college and law school, which means my nest is empty! I spend my time writing, working with the kids at my church, enjoying my husband's gourmet cooking, and hanging with my many writer friends. Of course, I love to read. I’m still crazy about words and stories and hope to write at least a hundred books in my lifetime. And, yes, verbs are the key to life. My favorites? Love. Work. Believe.
A sweet contemporary romance that will leave you in tears of happiness. 7th in the Dogfather series. Darcy, the youngest, wants to live on her own again, but the hot landlord in her new home makes the “alone” not as important.
Heartwarming and lovely. And all the good things you want to happen in a romance. Yes, a few bumps along the way that make the ending so much richer. Truly a deep sigh of contentment. Ah...love.
A Kilcannon family dinner conversation. Darcy doesn’t know that romance is right around the corner. “Anyway, he’s not done with us,” Shane said, pointing at Darcy. “Tick tock, li’l sis.” The clock was ticking all right, but not for that. “Sometimes it’s like no one in this family thinks about anything but love. There are other ways to find happiness, you know.” “Name one,” Garrett cracked, making the many newlyweds or nearlyweds lift their glasses in a toast of solidarity and agreement. Darcy rolled her eyes so hard it was a wonder she didn’t injure herself. “A person can be entirely happy on their own, you guys. A woman isn’t incomplete without a man. A human isn’t unfinished without a partner. Not every creature mates for life, I’ll have you know.” Excerpt From Double Dog Dare by Roxanne St. Claire This material may be protected by copyright.
This isn’t the last book in the series, but it’s the only one I hadn’t read, so it’s over until the author writes another in the Dogmothers series! This HEA was for Darcy, the “baby” in the Kilcannon clan, and Josh, her “by the rules” landlord. They clash over the no pets clause until Josh gets landed with his ex’s blind dog, Stella. They become an unlikely team when Josh is offered a clinical trial that may just restore Stella’s sight. But can Darcy help Josh heal from a bad break up and an alienated family? I loved this book and both series. I would recommend them to everyone.
Not so long ago, all Joshua Ranier wanted was a wife and a family. One he could choose. But after being betrayed by the woman he thought he would marry, he swore to never trust a woman again nor fall in love.
The youngest of the Kilcannon clan, Darcy wants freedom and doesn't feel like she needs a man to be complete. Now that she just turned thirty, she's ready to start a new life, which mean leaving the family home (she came back four years ago to help her dad and gramma when her mother died) and start her business for a grooming spa. And as much as her dad enjoyed playing matchmaker for all his kids, it's different this time. Darcy is the baby, and he's not quite ready to see her leave the nest.
When Darcy meet a gorgeous stranger, who happen to be her landlord, she's sure it's a setup arranged by her father, so she's determined to not fall for Josh's charm. The guy have a no pets policy anyway and have so many rules that doesn't sound fun for a free spirit like Darcy. But as she'll learn soon enough, Josh loves dog just as much as her and it's a question of security for the animals that he won't allow them while he's doing construction on the unit next to her's.
It's attraction at first sight for Josh, but he swore off women and immediately see his new tenant as trouble. But all his rules falls apart the day he accept to take care of Stella, the dog he gave to his ex, who just asked him to dogsitt while she's in vacation. It's been hardly a month since he last saw Stella, and it's a shock for him to see the once vivacious Chinese Crescent became blind and is afraid of everything. It's Stella's well-being that will bring Darcy and Josh closer, and it won't take long to realize they were all meant to be together.
"Here's to Stella," he said, raising his glass. "The blind dog who helped me see."
Oh my goodness, I loved this book so much ! And as much as I adored book 4, I think I have a new favorite in the series. Double Dog Dare was everything that I wanted and more ! There was a couple twists I never saw coming and I liked all the nicknames Darcy gave the hero in her mind and aloud ;p The instant chemistry between them was so special and their verbal exchanges amazing ! It began as a mix of prickly and friendly, and just a little bit of sass. It's difficult to describe, but it was beautiful to witness.
"Darcy,", he whispered. "If I get into bed with you, I'm a dead man." "Not sure it'll be quite that good, but thanks." He didn't laugh. "I won't stop as once, I can't be satisfied with casual. I won't want to walk away."
I love the underlying message that even if Josh come from money, it's Darcy who have the biggest richness with her loving family. There's lots of things about Josh's family that talked to me. Even if I don't share the same situation, there were quotes who resonated with me, especially the day I was reading it.
One thing is for sure : this book will be a memorable one for me.
I love the Irish brood that are the Kilcannon. I'm so happy there's a Christmas novella coming next month and to know that the Dogfather will have his book too. He's such an amazing dad and helped all his children find love, so he more than deserve to find love again.
I honestly believe The Dogfather series just gets better and better with each book. Just when I think the last book is my favorite, Roxanne St. Claire puts out another book in the series. Double Dog Dare is such an amazing story and I absolutely couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Daniel "The Dogfather" Kilcannon is 5 for 6 in finding matches for his children with only the youngest Darcy still single.
Darcy Kilcannon has always been a bit more of a free spirit than her siblings. Part of that is probably because she is the baby of the family, but I really just felt it was just part of what made her Darcy. She is finally ready to move out on her own and start her own business. Darcy has such a take-charge personality, I just knew whatever she set her mind to accomplish, would happen. I don't know what it was about Darcy, but I just loved every single moment I spent with her on the page in Double Dog Dare.
Joshua Ranier has moved to Bitter Bark following bad breakup with his girlfriend after catching her with his stepbrother. Josh is a more of a by the book type of guy than free spirited Darcy and I knew from the moment they met, they were absolutely perfect for each other. Of course the fact that Darcy wants her dog Kookie to live with her in a "no pets" home could have been a huge issue. Luckily, Josh's ex shows up needing him to watch her dog Stella while she leaves town for a bit with Gideon, Josh's stepbrother. The fact that Stella is now blind and afraid of everything and everyone means Josh needs not only Darcy's help but her family's help as well.
I loved everything about the pacing of Josh and Darcy's relationship. They were "friends with dogs" who became so much more. The fact they were thrown together to get help for Stella only made me love them even more. I just connected to them as a couple so quickly. They had great chemistry and worked tirelessly to get the help Stella needed to possibly regain her sight. I loved the simmering chemistry between them. As Josh just got out of a serious relationship, I wouldn't have bought them jumping right into bed together. I liked they honestly were friends first before taking that big step to make their relationship more.
I love how the Kilcannons accepted Josh pretty much from the moment they met him. As he didn't have the greatest family life thanks to his stepsiblings, it was so nice to see him accepted from the beginning. I also loved that Darcy never gave up on Josh trying to make a connection with his stepfather and have a real family himself. My heart broke for Josh that he never really felt apart of his family after his dad died and him mom remarried. Josh never got along with his stepfather Malcolm Bucking, even know how much he loved his mom. I have to say I was happy that thanks to Darcy, Josh didn't close the door on his family, even with all that happened with the family.
I absolutely loved Double Dog Dare so much! Roxanne St. Claire has been an auto-buy author for me from the moment I read my first book by her, and I've never missed a book since. Double Dog Dare is such a beautiful story filled with love, family and precious dogs. I highly recommend not only this book but the entire series to all contemporary romance fans.

A lovely romance that began with two people definitely *not* looking for love–who also started things off in a very rocky way–Double Dog Dare had me laughing, sighing happily and shedding some tears before it was all said and done.
Oh, those Kilcannons! What a wonderful bunch of people they have all turned out to be. And youngest sibling Darcy was definitely just as caring, determined, and smart as the rest of the family. I loved finally getting to really know her and to watch as she struck out on her own path, albeit still in Bitter Bark, but getting her own place and setting up an independent business from Waterford Farm. The Dogfather Magic continues for the youngest in the Kilcannon Clan!
Darcy Kilcannon is the vivacious, free-spirited, beautiful, blonde, blue-eyed baby of the family who is tired of being coddled, sheltered and dependent on her family now that she is turning the BIG 3-0! Even though she dearly loves every single one of her four overprotective, older big brothers and loving older sister, along with her wise and charming Gramma Finnie, her adorable nieces and nephew, and most of all, her precious and devoted Dad, The Dogfather himself, she has goals and dreams of finally being independent! She’s ready to strike out and live on her own terms. More importantly, she doesn’t need or want a “man” to tell her what, when or how to live her life! She yearns to have the freedom to make her own choices, achieve her dreams, feed her entrepreneurial spirit and open her own business. However, she isn’t prepared for the pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, wall of muscles she meets when moving into her new apartment that she dubs “HL for Hot Landlord”, Joshua Ranier.
“He dropped to the floor, turned, and for a split second, they both stood in what felt like stunned silence. Oh God. This was her landlord? This hot, hunky human built for a joyride was her landlord?”
Josh Ranier, (aka - Hot Landlord), has just come out of one very messy, nasty breakup and is only looking to finish renovating his latest project on a brownstone where he’s also currently residing. He has promised himself he will have nothing more to do with any women and puts his heart firmly on ice! However, he and his heart aren’t quite prepared for the tiny but tenacious new tenant who is all kinds of gorgeous and breathes beauty, light and happiness into everything and everyone around her. He’s never seen or met anyone quite like Darcy Kilcannon her close-knit, loving family in his entire life. Didn’t even know women like her existed and is completely blown away when faced with a crisis and Darcy swoops in to help him and his ex-girlfriend’s dog, Stella, who has suddenly lost her sight.
“...something told him Darcy Kilcannon was a force of nature who would do whatever she wanted and he’d be the one blown away.”
This is one of my favorites in the Dogfather series as Josh & Darcy race against time to try and help Josh’s beloved pooch, Stella, while also solving a mystery with Josh’s family.
For Animal Lovers: “Every dog on the covers of the Dogfather books is a rescue dog from the Alaqua Animal Refuge in the author's home state of Florida, where the covers were photographed. A portion of proceeds from every book in the series is donated to this amazing shelter. So you don't just get a great book, you help a deserving animal find a forever home!”
*I was honored to be given an Advanced Reader’s Copy by the author.
Joshua “Josh” Ranier runs his own property renovation business. He moves to Bitter Bark to distance himself from his stepfamily and his ex-girlfriend. Josh vows to never trust in or fall in love with another woman. However, his pretty, new tenant forces Josh to rethink over his hastily-made pledge. When his ex-girlfriend saddles him with a blind dog, Josh swallows his pride and asks Darcy Kilcannon for help. Can Darcy help Josh learn to trust again? Or will he keep their relationship strictly friends with dogs? Will Stella regain her eyesight?
Darcy Kilcannon is the youngest of the Dogfather’s six children. She intends to thwart her father’s matchmaking and to become an independent person. Darcy plans to open a dog grooming business outside her family’s canine facility. When she discovers a “no pets” rule at her new apartment, Darcy confronts her hunky landlord. She offers to help Josh with his blind dog, so she can live with her beloved dog. Will Josh threaten Darcy’s independence? Can she help Josh overcome his deep-seeded issues with his stepfamily?
Josh is a stickler for rules. I adore how he’s willing to bend or break those rules for Stella’s health and safety. I admire Josh’s refusal to lie to anyone, especially to the Dogfather. It shows that he is a man of integrity. But what I like the most about Josh is how he does not resent the Kilcannon’s for their familial unity. Through the Kilcannons, Josh finally sees how a true family should behave and interact.
Darcy is Josh’s opposite. She is a free spirit who marches to her own tune. I love Darcy and Molly’s closeness, the ease in which Darcy can unburden all her woes to her sister without fear or recrimination. She may not agree or like Molly’s advice sometimes, but she still listens to them. I adore Darcy’s empathy for Stella and the other dogs undergoing the experimental treatment to cure their blindness. But, what I like the most about Darcy is how she tries to help Josh confront and accept his issues with his stepfamily.
DOUBLE DOG DARE is book six in Roxanne St. Claire’s canine-contemporary series, THE DOGFATHER. I absolutely love that the author included a dachshund in the story. It plays a small part, but its appearance in the book made me squee in happiness.
DOUBLE DOG DARE is a heart-and-soul warming tale of finding familial acceptance. I am sad that this delightful series is nearly done, but happy that the author plans to write a spin-off with the Mahoney cousins. I cannot wait for the Dogfather’s book!
Oh my! The feels in this one are over the top and every page better than the one before. Darcy is the last of the Kilcannon clan and on her 30th birthday she has a surprise for her dad and the rest of the family...she is moving out and starting her own business in town. Independence is what she wants, not to be set up by the Dogfather. Nope, that is not in her future, she will not stand for it. Josh Ranier is renovating apartments and looking for a tenant and since there is still construction going on he has a no pets clause. Yeah, right. Where Darcy goes, so does Kookie. Well, one look at Josh and Darcy is sure the Dogfather has set her up but since Josh is recently out of a relationship and not looking for another, these two come to an understanding when his ex shows up with her dog who has gone blind needing help. Now, since Josh has a dog, he cannot keep Darcy from having one. These two work together so well as friends with dogs they soon don't realize when lines are crossed or don't care. Families such as the Kilcannon family have a way of pulling you in and Josh was ripe for the pulling but when he took Darcy home to his she managed to fit in there and helped to mend some rips there too. It is hard to believe we have come to the end of the Kilcannon kids and the Dogfather set them all up, or at least he did the most of them, he maintains he didn't this one and maybe Annie had something to do with it (I think so too).
I highly recommend this one and this could be read as a standalone, as all of this series could, but really why would you want to because each is so spectacularly told and each story is so special.
Darcy Kilcannon is the last single child of the family. So far she's avoided any matchmaking by her dad affectionately called the Dogfather be her family. He's known for his supposed matchmaking skills, but Darcy has sworn that she is not ready to settle down. As the youngest she's never really been taken seriously and she's determined to strike out on her own and and set up her new dog grooming business with no help from her family. Josh on the other hand has not had the same kind of family life as Darcy. His family might be rich but it doesn't mean they are loving. When he catches his step brother in bed with his almost fiance he's put off relationships for good. Darcy moves into the apartment building he's renovating and when they clash over his no dogs allowed policy they end up uniting in helping another dog whose blind and needs help. I have enjoyed this series right along and each time a new book has come out i thought it might be my favorite but i think that honor belongs to Darcy and Josh. They just clicked even when they clashed at the beginning. Both had set ideas on relationships and independence and didn't think they needed someone to share their lives with on a permanent basis. I'm loving the Kilcannon family. They aren't perfect but the are definitely there for each other. Looking forward to the Christmas novella and the Dogfather's book coming soon.
Ms. St. Claire has officially gone to the dogs...in a way that will melt your heart. The only thing as good as her human characters is her canine characters! This is about the last child of the Dogfather, who is notorious for his skill with dogs as well as his skill at finding love matches for his children. Only Darcy has no intention of going down without a fight. She's moving out, starting her own business and becoming as independent as she can. Then she meets Hot Landlord and she starts to wonder if independence is everything she thought it would be. St. Claire finds just the right balance in Darcy and Josh. Neither wants a relationship, yet when they join together to fight for a life changing experimental procedure for a blind dog, they gracefully give in to their hearts. It might not be what they had planned, but somethings just can't be fought! This is another delightful Dogfather book that warms the heart and soul. It's not all warmth and heartstrings, though. Double Dog Dare has a dysfunctional family, mystery and drama enough to keep you turning those pages. And dogs. You can't go wrong with the dogs!
I am so glad this isn't the last story in this series. Each book makes me fall more in love with the Kilcannon family. Darcy is the youngest and she sees all her siblings getting their happy ever after and all she can think of is her own freedom. She wants to live on her own and doesn't want anyone to tie her down. Her dad isn't really ready to let her go, but he knows she has to stand on her own two feet. She moves into a building that says she can't have her dog. Must be a grumpy old landlord. Josh is far from a grumpy old landlord. He is a big, sexy man and she is going to have a hard time staying away from him. Josh loves dogs, but there is going to be some construction going on and he can't have a pet running around because they might get hurt. He is a by the rules kind of person. Darcy isn't. When Josh's ex shows up with her little, blind dog and needs Josh to take care of her for a while, he can't turn little Stella away. And then he has to allow Darcy to have her dog. Josh was very hurt by his ex and he doesn't want to get tangled up with anyone ever, but he sure has a hard time resisting Darcy. She just might change his mind about a lot of things.
Double Dog Dare- book #7 in The DogFather Series...
Ms. St. Claire has done It again. Absolutely loved this book. What happens when two people and two dogs come together?
Darcy wants to be on her own. Not away from her family, but just needs her independence. She hopes her father sees it that way when she tells him what she wants to do.
Josh was done. He’s sworn off lasting relationships with women. Well until Darcy Kilcannon walks into his life and into his townhome. What he didn’t except was how she got to him. He had rules, and wanted them followed. He loved dogs, but just right now they weren’t allowed. Until his ex drops off Stella to him. Something wasn’t quite right with the pup. Sweet Stella Belonging to Josh’s ex comes to stay with him. Darcy’s ticket to getting her hot landlord into letting Kookie her sweet dog staying in her new place.
See what happens. Is the DogFather at it again? Darcy sure thinks so and when Josh learns about it he assures Darcy he has not interest in any relationship.
Is Daniel "the Dogfather" Kilcannon up to his matchmaking tricks again or has fate steered Darcy straight to Joshua Ranier? After watching her siblings fall one after the other Darcy is on to her father's ways. She has no problem with love and marriage. Just not for her. Not now at least. She wants to experience her new found independence and spread her wings. Joshua is new to Bitter Bark and fresh off a bad breakup. The last thing he wants is anything that smells like a relationship. Sometimes though they brain might say one thing but the heart wants another. These two dog loving people may just find exactly what they weren't looking for.
As with all her books, Roxanne St. Claire has delivered a story that is fun, emotional, well written with some very intriguing characters. Don't miss this one as the last of the Kilcannon clan finds their HEA. I highly recommend it.
Daniel Kilcannon is the head of the family that runs Waterford Farms, a dog rescue/training facility in Bitter Bark, N. C. Daniel is known for arranging for his children to meet their true mate. The last man standing , or woman in this case, is Darcy Kilcannon, the baby of the family. Darcy is ready to move out on her own and start her own business. She moves into an apartment where part of the building is still under renovation. Josh Rainer is renovating the building. Josh has been burned badly by a previous girlfriend and has sworn off women until he meets Darcy.
I love this series and recommend all of them to anyone who enjoys a feel good romance. Each book could stand on its own but the series is so good why miss out, read them all!
Double Dog Dare, by Roxanne St. Claire, is another heartwarming adventure of the Kilcannon family. Darcy, the youngest, is ready to spread her wings and move out of the family home. Josh Ranier wants to be independent from his family but for different reasons. Darcy and Josh meet when she moves into the brownstone he is renovating. The real story is the love they have for their dogs. Kookie, Darcy’s dog, befriends Stella, Josh’s ex-girlfriend’s dog who unceremoniously dropped her off for him to take care of her. Stella is blind and Kookie becomes her defender and protector. The story has a whole lot of love to give for both humans and dogs alike. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
The Kilcannons are back to warm your heart and tickle your funny bone. Darcy finally gets her happily ever after and this time around it's a family affair. St. Claire combines cuteness and love to bring some serious sunshine into the universe. Double Dog Dare brings out the big guns with adorable furry friends, enchanting two legged characters and a ton of irresistible romance. Darcy and Joshua have their hands full when a matchmaking father sets his sights on them. It hurts to say goodbye to this boisterous group. From the first hello to the final goodbye, this family is a memorable clan.
This is my favorite of the series so far. I genuinely liked Darcy and Josh. Their hang-ups were understandable, and I appreciated the slower progression of their relationship. I loved their dogs and the circumstances that initiated Darcy and Josh's friendship, and the bond between them and their dogs. I also really liked the unpredictable parts of this story. Every aspect brought this whole book together for a wonderful read, healing parts and presents, and creating a beautiful little family with Darcy, Josh and the doggies.
Independent Darcy, determined to make it on her own. Josh, reeling from a bad break-up and determined never to love again, get off to a rough start. Enter two lovable canines, one dealing with a severe disability, and Darcy and Josh are soon Friends with Dogs, working together for the sake of Kookie and Stella. There are some twists and turns, laughs, tears, family, and of course the Dogfather. Can love be far behind? Another winner in the Dogfather series. I highly recommend it!
Double Dog Dare is Roxanne St. Clairee's seventh book in the Dogfather series based upon the fictional Kilcannon family of Bitter Bark North Carolina. This book focuses on youngest daughter Darcy and her new landlord Joshua. I’ve truly enjoyed this series. I love the big Irish family with the wise, supportive, widowed father, spunky octogenarian Irish gramma, and the six Kilcannon siblings. I’ve enjoyed the small town setting and of course the romance and the dogs. This is a good book. A fun book for the most part. I had some issues with it however. My biggest is that the author had Darcy and Joshua fall so deeply in love with each other so early in the story the rest of the book where they stubbornly continue to resist their attraction because Darcy wants to enjoy her new found independence and fears a romantic relationship would detract from it, and Joshua has determined he’ll never fall in love again because of the betrayal of the woman he was about to propose to just seemed to become unrealistic other than as a contrivance to prolong the sexual tension in the story. Then there’s this whole idea of Darcy wanting her independence to prove she can stand on her own two feet. Darcy’s story here begins with her 30th birthday party. She’s leased an empty storefront in downtown Bitter Bark which she wants to turn into a dog grooming studio. She also wants to move out of the family home and find her own place. Because she wants to prove she’s a grown, independent woman. But that said we learn that Darcy had been out on her own before moving back home at 26 years old to offer support to her father and beloved gramma after her mother unexpectedly passes away. Assuming she went away to college at 17 or 18 years old that’s 8 or 9 years where she had already been out on her own supporting herself, living her life. Plenty of time to establish her credibility as an independent grown adult woman. Another thing that bothered me was Darcy’s dad’s comment to Josh in reference to Darcy that he may have saved the best for last and his difficulty with letting Darcy go off and be a truly independent adult leading her own life. I thought that was sort of insulting to the rest of his children. What about his oldest daughter Molly who idolizes him and followed in his footsteps becoming a veterinarian and raising a daughter on her own from the time she was only 19 years old? What about his sons who have done everything he’s asked of them and are fine upstanding men in their own right? And I get that Darcy is his youngest, his baby, but for heaven’s sake she’s 30 years old, not 21. Most women that age have started their own careers and many are married and mothers. Lastly, I don’t want to spoil the ending but I don’t think the guilty in any way got what was coming to them. None of these criticisms are meant to take away from the fact that this is a warm hearted modern romance with PG rated sex and just a little suspense as it moves towards its conclusion. If you like romance stories set amongst a big loving family in a small town and if you’re a dog lover you’ll enjoy this book and if you haven’t read the first six in the series you’ll enjoy them too.
This is Book 7 in Roxanne St. Claire’s Dogfather Series. It is the story of the youngest Kilcannon family member, Darcy. Determined not to fall prey to her father’s matchmaking skills, Darcy decides to move out on her own and, at the same time, establish her business as a dog groomer away from Waterford Farm, the family home.
Her search for her own place brings her to a newly remodeled apartment in a building owned and being renovated by Josh Ranier. The only problem is the landlord’s rule of no dogs allowed. Not wanting to be denied residency, Darcy plans to hide her little Shih Tzu, Kookie, from Josh and move in anyway.
Having recently sworn off all women after finding his girlfriend with another man on the night he planned to propose, Josh threw himself completely into his reno project until the ex showed up with the dog they shared when they were together. With no explanation, she leaves the dog with him and disappears, but somethings are not right. The dog, Stella, was fine when they parted ways but now is acting strange only to find out she has become blind. Her only chance to restore her sight is complicated by Josh’s dysfunctional family, the disappearance of the owner from whom permission is needed for treatment and a mystery about some family jewels.
This book has it all. From mystery to new relationships to doggie love, you will fall in love with the Kilcannon family. This is a stand alone book but I would recommend the previous books be read first to become familiar with the delightful Kilcannon Family.
Let it be noted that the cover models are actual dog owners and rescue pups from the Alaqua Animal Refuge in Roxanne’s home state of Florida. A portion of the proceeds goes to the shelter.
This is Darcy Kilcannon’s story. The younger of the clan, she longs for independence and being her own and with her 30th birthday approaching she decides it is time to open her own business, leave the nest (Waterford Farm) and get her own apartment. Enter Joshua Ranier, an investor and developer who is restoring a property in Bitter Bark and happens to have a new apartment but it is next to the other unit which is still under construction. Darcy lucked out and became her tenant but was surprised when the by-the-rules landlord informed her that pets weren't allowed because of liability. Darcy was unfazed by this development and decided to challenge him by sneaking her inseparable Kookie. Joshua is being careful with all his human interactions, unable to mesh with the family his mother married into and being recently betrayed by his girlfriend, he doesn't know that he will be in the middle of the ordered chaos that is living in Bitter Bark.
Soon after Darcy moved into his building, his ex reappeared and dropped the dog which he gave to her, only to disappear and left him to deal with a newly blinded and confused pup. He is over his head with work and Stella's suffering but Darcy's compassion and willingness to help gave the pair the opportunity to better know each other, deal with Stella's fears and health issues and Darcy to have Kookie legally with her. Soon they become friends with dogs, with Josh meeting the Kilcannons in their natural habitat and Darcy meeting the Buckings in theirs. While one family is a close unit, filled with love, banter and the willingness to do everything in their power to help others, the other family is somehow divided, with miscommunication problems and prone to drama. And then, there are the dogs with Stella's blindness taking a very important role in Darcy and Josh relationship and proving once more that Daniel Kilcannon is the Dogfather, the man who will give his all for furry puppers and his family. Once I started reading DDD, I personally realized like Darcy that loneliness can disguise itself in many ways, that you can still be independent while being in a loving, empowering relationship and also learned like Josh that while you maybe part of an imperfect family, you can direct the path of the branch of your own family tree.
Double Dog Dare is the seventh book of The Dogfather series by Roxanne St.Claire, it can be read as a standalone book but it is more fulfilling if you read it as part of the series. I was amused, laughed, tried to solve some mysteries, cheered for a very special pack, had my heart broken and healed all during this journey. Rocki, please keep them coming. Solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
I volunteered to reviewed an ARC and these are my sincere thoughts.
Also I purchased this book, (my collection will be incomplete without it) and I’m proud and happy to help the Alaqua Animal Refuge in my state of Florida.
WOW! Roxanne St. Claire once again delivered an AMAZING new book! She leaves you questioning - Did he or didn't he? Did Daniel "The Dogfather" Kilcannon once again work his magic in Double Dog Dare, Darcy Kilcannon's story? Darcy is the baby of the Killcannon family, and is ready to move out on her own and become independent, after moving back home to Waterford Farms four years ago following the sudden death of her Mom, Annie. Darcy's moving out is a bittersweet moment for Daniel, which is why he insists that he has no plans of playing matchmaker. When Darcy approaches Daniel about her plans, to move out and start her own pet grooming business in Bitter Bark, Daniel recommends an apartment complex whose landlord is Joshua Ranier, a "rule follower" that he met at a Bitter Bark meeting. Daniel doesn't know that Joshua has sworn off of committed relationships, his late relationship did not end well for Joshua. Darcy takes one look at Josh and thinks her Dad is trying to play matchmaker with her, and nicknames Josh "Hot Landlord". Darcy wants no part of Daniel's plans and wants Josh to play along with pretend dating, but Josh won't lie about that. Unexpected events happen, causing Darcy and Josh to get closer and become "friends with dogs". Darcy and Josh both share the loss of a beloved parent and reminisce about their cherished memories of the great times they shared. Josh falls in love with the Kilcannon family, because his family life does not compare. His father died suddenly in an accident when he was a boy and his mother remarried a wealthy man with two children of his own. Josh has never felt like he belongs with the Bucking family and calls their home "Buckingsham Manor". While the Kilcannon family believes that Daniel is doing his matchmaking magic on Darcy and Josh, they are all trying to find eligible women to date their Dad. But are they really ready for Daniel to marry again? Like all Roxanne St. Claire books, there come the bittersweet moments, and surprising plot twists with things not always as they appear. Rocki again delivers real characters, who are more like friends than beloved characters in a book. I sometimes feel like I am a distant cousin to the Kilcannon family and always want to know what is going on with the family. One of my favorite parts is that ach book in the series gives you a glimpse as to what is going on in the lives in the other Kilcannon children. There are lots of beautiful, heartwarming moments in this book that you might need a Kleenex or two. After everything is sorted out and the truth comes, the Kilcannon's gather to celebrate Josh's birthday, where Josh receives a surprise bittersweet birthday gift from his Mom. Josh then delivers the BEST proposal EVER to Darcy, after Christian blows out the candles on his birthday cake. Cannot wait to see who the "happy" Kilcannon children plan to matchmake with their Dad, so he can join in with them and their happiness. I loved this book and catching up with all the beloved Kilcannon family members! I was given an ARC of Double Dog Dare for an honest review.
Smiles. Laughs. Tears. Contentment. Just a few words that describe what I felt as I read the latest in Roxanne St. Claire’s Dogfather series, Double Dog Dare. One of the most difficult parts of a close family is figuring out your fit – as a family member, how do you compliment the family dynamics while still maintaining your own identity. That’s what is so fun about this series. In each book, you get to see one of the Kilcannon children fit his/her own puzzle piece into the big jigsaw puzzle of Waterford Farms. In this latest book, Darcy’s challenge is that of the youngest in the family who is ready for her independence and wants to do it her way. Enter HL (“Hot Landlord”) who just so happens to have an apartment to rent with a ‘no dogs allowed’ rule. How can you not love Darcy? She always has a toe over the line while believing that she can make situations work out. Not a spoiler – or a surprise – to say it didn’t take long until she has HL allowing Kookie to stay. And there starts the story of how 2 friends with dogs, Darcy & Josh, bond over their dogs, their family experiences – hers so positive and his so negative, and their staunch need for independence. Love seems to creep in when they least expect it as they work through family drama, grieving of lost family members, and starting careers that have a tie to family businesses with their own unique twist. Add in the ever present and always amazing dogs who continue to show us what unconditional love looks like. What’s not to like?
As I’ve said with each book, the Dogfather book I’ve just finished is my favorite. This one though holds a place in my heart that none of the others have done. Josh’s dad died early in his life. Darcy’s mom’s death is at the center of this whole series. 2 weeks prior to reading this book, I unexpectedly lost my father. Dogs were such a huge part of my dad’s and my life. Instead of making me sad, Rocki’s writing allowed me to feel the grief of losing him while still allowing me the warm feelings from celebrating the love of a family and their devotion to the dogs. It was just what I needed to smile through the tears as I hugged my little fur baby to my heart and loved on her. I don’t re-read many books – probably less than a handful in my life. I’ve already started my second read of this book – and I’m smiling and laughing and tearing up again – and loving every minute of it!
Another W for The Dogfather, Daniel Kilcannon. Darcy Kilcannon is the youngest of 6 who has decided that it is time for her to move forward with her life. Darcy is funny, smart, loving, and has a beautiful heart. She wants to expand her dog grooming business from just being at the family farm, Waterford Farms (largest dog training/rescue facility in the state) to an independent location within her hometown of Bitter Bark. Darcy also wants to live on her own as well. Of course Daniel has the perfect location for her to live because the landlord is a great guy(do you smell setup?). All of Daniel's kids believe he plays a huge role in setting them up with the love of their lives. Daniel absolutely denies this every chance he gets. Joshua Ranier, has lost at love and family. Joshua is sexy, smart, handsome with a heart of gold. Joshua lost his father as a young boy and has never been able to forgive his father for "leaving him" or his mother for remarrying into a very wealthy family who does not like him at all. Joshua moves to Bitter Bark to embark on growing his business of flipping properties. Darcy finds that there is one flaw (pretty big one) in Joshua....he does not allow dogs in his property rentals. What's a girl to do? Sneak your dog (Kookie) in in your purse!! From the moment Darcy moves in she begins to show Joshua how families should be. Loving, caring, supportive, have your back, and so much more. Joshua ends up taking care of the dog that he gave his ex, only to discover that Stella (the dog) is blind. Together Josh and Darcy with the help of Daniel enroll Stella in an experimental procedure to cure her blindness(SARDS). Kookie and Stella are super cute dogs that you will absolutely fall in love with. No spoilers here. So if you want to know if Darcy and Josh find love and if Stella sees again you will just have to get Double Dog Dare. Roxanne St. Claire writes a beautiful story with heart, strong characters, family love, and showcases a new breed of dog in each one of The Dogfather books. Characters from previous books make an appearance to help you catch up on their lives. This is a stand alone and you do not have to have read the previous books to understand the story. I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review. 5 stars*****
Roxanne St. Claire is an automatic read for me every time. This latest book in the Dogfather series brings us back to Bitter Bark once again for the story of Darcy, the last of the single and the youngest Killcannon sibling. This story starts with Darcy Kilcannon turning thirty, and Josh Ranier having his own life event making him swear off relationships for good. Darcy, set on finding independence instead of love meets Josh, who happens to be her landlord, then they begin a journey where simply being “friends with dogs” is the goal. Little did they know that their attempt to do what was best for the dogs, especially poor Stella, would bring them closer together and eventually lead to their own happily ever after.
Roxanne St. Claire is again dependable in her creativity to tell a beautiful, adventurous, and often suspenseful story. She created Bitter Bark with everything you’d expect from a quaint small town with unique and loveable characters, and by book seven it is no longer a fictitious town within the pages of a book, but rather a familiar location that readers feel they have experienced in person. Part of what I love so much about her stories are the characters she creates and the uniqueness of them all. In a family with six siblings, there are no cookie cutter characters, each have their own voice and personality to add to the story. We even catch a glimpse of a past hero and his love from an earlier novel (not set in this series) that allows readers to see how they are today. But it is her ability to create heartwarming and humorous secondary characters that I love the most about her stories, and her Dogfather series does not disappoint. Roxanne’s love of family, the dedication to detail of how this family works together to run Waterford Farms makes this series so endearing and enjoyable. Although Darcy and Josh are a strong candidate for my favorite couple of the series, I was thrilled to know there would be more in the Dogfather series, with the next being the Dogfather himself, and then perhaps the Mahoney cousins. Do yourself a favor and visit Bitter Bark- you won’t be disappointed!
Roxanne St. Claire has done it again, written a wonderful love story stolen by the dogs. This is the 7th book in The Dogfather series. It revolves around the youngest Kilcannon daughter Darcy and the love of her life she didn't see coming Joshua (Josh) Ranier.
Josh is very successful owning his own construction company, one which his wealthy stepfather would like him to get rid of and come work for him. Josh however doesn't like his dysfunctional family and after one disastrous night packs up and leaves for Bitter Bark.
Darcy Kilcannon is the dogfathers baby and the last of his unmarried children and she wants nothing to do with his match making plots. She just turned 30 and is ready to start her own life outside living with daddy and working close by. Sad to see her go he helps her find a place in a beautiful brownstone that she can't help fall in love with but one look at the hot landlord and she knows she's been played.
Josh and Darcy have both had bad luck with the opposite sex that it's turned them off the dating world or anything remotely close to love. Josh has an upside down construction building in need of repairing with a strict no dogs policy. Darcy however doesn't care and her and her cute little doggie Kookie are moving in anyway. He doesn't have much to say about that when his ex pops by and leaves him with her recently blind dog Stella and takes off to parts unknown. Even thou both Josh and Darcy have this strong pull to one another they agree that it just can't happen and decide it's best to be “friends with dogs”. We all know how well that usually works out.
This is a great loving story filled with both happy and sad moments. It's a tearjerker both ways so have those tissues ready. It can also be read as a standalone but if you haven't read the previous books you'll want to after you read this one. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
Roxanne St. Claire has written another winner in the Dogfather series. I don’t know how she makes each of her books better than the last one!
Josh Ranier is reeling from having discovered his girlfriend was cheating on him with his “evil” stepbrother. He’s sworn off love. Darcy Kilcannon isn’t looking for love. Rather, she desperately wants to find some place of her own and be independent. What a perfect setup for a wonderful love story! The Kilcannon family is wonderful, as always. Ms. St. Claire has a way of making each family member so real that you want to be one of Daniel Kilcannon’s sons or daughters – or at least an in-law! Josh’s family seems to be the complete opposite. Of course, there are dogs in the story that contribute a lot to the plot and make you fall in love with each of them.
I couldn’t put this book down. Darcy has a bubbly optimistic disposition and has no trouble finding the good in everyone and every situation. From the beginning, it’s clear she wants to be on her own, and being friends with Josh is more than enough for her….although the sexual chemistry between the two sizzles from when they first meet….and is denied by both of them! They draw together to help Josh’s unexpected dog, Stella (no spoilers here) and discover that love is nothing to be afraid of.
There are several twists (almost in the suspense genre that St. Clare does so well) that add depth to the story and make the pairing of Josh and Darcy even more inevitable.
I feel like I would recognize Josh or Darcy if I met them on the street and I want to go to Bitter Bark, North Carolina just to see the plaza, the stores, and meet the Kilcannon family! A book where the author can make the characters and setting seem so real is definitely a good read and well worth your time!
Darcy Kilcannon is the last of Daniel "The Dogfather" Kilcannon's kids whom he hasn't helped find her true love yet. Part of Daniel is reluctant because she is his baby girl and is he really ready for an empty nest?
On Darcy's 30th birthday party she informs her dad that she wants to move out on her own and start up her own dog grooming business. She even has already leased a place. While her dad is a little weary, he agrees and helps her find a place to live.
Imagine when Darcy shows up at the brownstone she is moving into to find out the owner is a hunky, sexy, hot guy.....hmm.....dad is up to his old games! Darcy is even more shocked to see that dogs are not allowed in the building!!!! So what does she do, she sneaks Kookie into her new apartment! Of course, Joshua "Hot Landlord" Ranier sees what is going on and that is where the fun begins.
Josh is trying to run from his old life. He has also sworn off woman after the number his last girlfriend played on him. Too bad, because his new tenant has really caught his attention. When Josh ends up with a blind dog that he is now trying to hide, Darcy comes to the rescue. As these two spend more time together, they both start realizing that maybe being independent isn't so important anymore.
I just adored these two. Neither of them were looking for a relationship, but sometimes that isn't the way things work out. These two fell fast and hard and it really scared both of them. Even though Josh is a rule follower and Darcy isn't, they meshed well together and it was fun watching them fall in love! Great addition to this series and I loved all the hints of women for Daniel! I can't wait to see who the lovely lady is going to be!
