Jake faces down a double-crossing buyer on a routine delivery and helps a desperate woman escape captivity. But now the same man is determined to kill them both.
He's a former mercenary turned galactic cargo runner who tries to get by and lay low. But his conscience, questionable choices, and bad luck thrust him into the thick of trouble more than he’d like.
Join Jake on a day that goes from bad to worse as he narrowly escapes death more than once, trying to make things right.
Author note: This is a novelette. The events in this story take place just before Deadly Cargo, both of which occur just before Forced Vengeance, Jake Mudd Adventures Book One.
I’ve enjoyed stories all my life—some in books, some in movies… some in my head. What can I say? Life is great, but so is imagination.
I’ve worked as a bookseller, a research library assistant, a computer network expert, and in a dozen other jobs over the years—some down the street from my childhood home, others which took me across oceans.
If I’m not reading or writing, I’m probably enjoying time with my family or friends, or hiking or Netflix-ing.
My innards were stitched together with Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, childhood dreams, unbound possibilities, and all of the great 80’s movies.
I've stumbled just enough times to give me some perspective (and character to my stories), but never so badly as to keep me down—for too long.
I believe in being decent to people just because, and going for what you want even when it seems really hard or almost out of reach.
I really enjoyed the prequel to Jake Mudd's adventures and misadventures with his cargo spaceship Sarah, a grumbling, sarcastic, humourus AI on his deliveries. A promising series, full of action, bad guys, damsel rescues and adventures!
In this prequel, Jake has to face down Gammon, a buyer who cheated him on a regular delivery. When he is about to fight him, he receives some help from a woman whom Gammon has forced to work for him. Allie escapes Gammon's captivity with Jake, and they run off together. While spending time with Allie, Jake learns more about the difficulties of living as a woman in this world.
This prequel truly allowed me to delve deeper into Mudd's universe. Sometimes, I felt that I could not be connected enough to it with Deadly Cargo, but this one definitely cleared everything up for me. I enjoyed every minute of it, and even though the story was short, I felt satisfied.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a short action/adventure story that takes place throughout space.
I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
