“This is a story of a tough young man who lost his way, and of a loving God who never forgot him, no matter where he was.” ― Nicky Cruz, bestselling author of Run Baby Run The son of El Salvadorian immigrants, Casey Diaz was brought to Los Angeles at the age of two. An abusive, impoverished family life propelled Casey at only eleven years of age into the Rockwood Street Locos gang. Casey was willing to do anything to be number one, but years of chasing rival gang members led to a dramatic ambush and arrest by the LAPD. At just sixteen, Casey was sentenced to more than twelve years in solitary confinement in California’s toughest prison as one of the state’s most violent offenders. He thought his life was over. Yet, when a determined elderly woman paid Casey a visit, a whole new world of possibilities began to unfold. Casey scoffed as she quietly insisted God was going to use him. As the days in solitary wore on, Casey realized Someone else was calling the shots. What happened next can only be described as a miracle. Perfect A visceral insider’s look at the violent world of gangs and prison life, The Shot Caller is a remarkable demonstration of God’s reckless, unending grace and His desire to reach even the worst of sinners―no matter where they are.
A fabulous book which is encouraging and challenging. Well written testimony. Pitched perfectly. With honest account of his life and that of gang members this book allowed me insight into so many things I was unaware of. Providing advice and guidance at the end of the book is helpful. There were a couple of things that were repeated but the repetition serves to reinforce the monotony of prison life.
A true story of genuine change, repentance, and. resolve to make a difference in a positive way in the world. Highly recommended.
The Shot Caller by Casey Diaz is a raw, powerful memoir that pulls you deep into the world of gangs, violence, and the consequences of a life ruled by survival and power. From a young age, Diaz was caught in a cycle of crime, eventually landing in solitary confinement as one of California’s most violent offenders. His story is gripping, at times heartbreaking, and unflinchingly honest about the brutal realities of gang life.
But what makes this book truly remarkable is its message of transformation. Diaz’s encounter with an elderly woman who saw something in him beyond his crimes—and his eventual spiritual awakening—feels nothing short of miraculous. His journey from a hardened gang member to a man of faith is deeply inspiring, showing that redemption is possible no matter how far someone has fallen.
The writing is direct and immersive, placing the reader right alongside Diaz as he navigates both the streets and the prison system. His testimony is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond the reach of grace. If you're drawn to stories of second chances, faith, and the resilience of the human spirit, The Shot Caller is a must-read.
