I really enjoy this book. There was a lot more then just solving a crime. The main character was also having family problems (him and his wife trying to get pregnant, he was also dealing with bad stuff of his past). I really got to like the characters in this book and wanted to find out what happen to them. I won a kindle edition of this book from a goodreads giveaway, but this review is 100% my own opinion. (*)

Se me ha hecho muy pesado, con demasiada trama política, muchos personajes secundarios que hacen perder el hilo, mucha historia secundaria poco relevante... Lo empecé con muchas ganas, porque el primero (No pidas clemencia) me gustó, pero este me ha decepcionado.

Visit the locations in the novel
During a farm auction in the Stockholm archipelago, a dead man is found in a coffin. That is not strange in itself, except he’s been chopped in half and has some unsightly symbols engraved on his forehead. When it becomes apparent that this man was the head of the Swedish Migration Board, all hell breaks loose. The police start to investigate his work which was very sensitive to many.
He’s only the first high-ranking Swede to fall victim to this killer….
The Swedish archipelago is a important setting with a lot of meaning for this thriller. Roslagen is the name of the northern part of the archipelago and the island of Arholma is where the Estonian cemetery is in the story. Estonian Swedes fled from Soviet troops during World War II and many of them ended up at Björkö-Arholma in Roslagen. This area is therefore very historically interesting and where the novel really comes into its own by mixing fact and fiction.
We hear of the Kursk and its role in the war, the significance of the islands since and during the war and the link between Russia, Estonia and Sweden. Too much to mention in one review but believe me , it’s a fascinating part of history.
The thriller plot, combined with the level of research and history really makes this novel shine. It’s a tough and gripping read which I was enthralled by throughout.

During the crisis caused by the sinking of the submarine The Kursk, somebody is going around killing Swedish public officials in horrific ways, marking the kills with numbers and strange, obscure symbols.
The think-tank Max Anger works for tries to figure out ways to save the submariners, while Putin and the Swedish bureaucracy try to figure out ways not to save them. Max gets recruited to help find the killer. It all goes back to WWII, like usual in these sorts of books, with neo-nazis and the Russians involved in a shameful chapter of Sweden's past.
Fairly good, with a different perspective than we usually see.

Not my typical genre: more thriller than mystery. But once the characters are established, it kicks into high gear. I'll definitely seek out more in this series.

This was better than the first book in the series, but it still wasn't amazing. The story is too non-specific and doesn't really do anything unique or feel different or special at all. As in the first book, everything somehow magically revolves around characters introduced in the story, which for a spy an intrigue novel doesn't really feel very satisfying. Also the big threat is never very specifically described - it's more a generic "there's something bad in there, good luck we stopped it" type of story. Also the main characters are not particularly compelling or likeable. On the whole, this is probably one to skip.

A very complex story. I found it difficult to follow at first, but the plot came together in a tight fit at the end. Glad to see it's being made into a tv series, I guess in Sweden, as the writing is very cinematic. I would have liked more character development across the generations, and among the main couple, but then I didn't read the first book in this series where it may have taken place.

Wanneer een hoogwaardigheidsbekleder dood wordt gevonden breekt de hel los in het Zweedse (politieke) landschap. Het is namelijk allemaal nogal luguber en opmerkelijk te noemen want de vindplaats is een koffer die zojuist is geveild. Maar dat is nog niet alles, de moordenaar, het is duidelijk dat ze daarmee te maken hebben, heeft opvallende markeringen op het gehavende lichaam van het slachtoffer achtergelaten waarvan niemand in eerste instantie weet wat ze ermee moeten doen of wat het betekent.
Maar de Zweden krijgen al snel nog iets waarover ze zich kunnen buigen want de Russen gaan hun grenzen weer eens testen. Een grootse nautische oefening, de grootste sinds de val van de muur, zet alle verhoudingen onder spanning. Wanneer het dan ook nog eens goed fout gaat met een onderzeeër en er mensenlevens op het spel komen te staan, is het de politiek die het grandioos laat afweten. De spanning is om te snijden.
Een vervolg op het verpletterende eerste deel Vraag niet om genade moet wel héél sterk zijn om te overtreffen. Dat was mijn eerste gedachte toen het tweede deel met Max Anger verscheen. Series kunnen zowel leuk als verraderlijk zijn, ze zijn hoe dan een uitdaging voor auteurs om te blijven fascineren. En gelukkig doet Dodenlijst dat, en hoe! Mensen, wát een steengoede thriller is dit weer. Verhaaltechnisch zit het geheel ijzersterk in elkaar, de verhaallijn is authentiek, doet bijzonder realistisch aan. De research voelt onfeilbaar aan, alles lijkt te kloppen. Van actie tot politiek, de spanning en de afloop: Österdahl pakt alles grondig aan en ik kan geen onvolkomenheid vinden in dit gruwelijk spannend verhaal.
Max Anger is een van mijn nieuwe favoriete hoofdpersonages in Scandi-thrillers. Wat een kerel! Österdahl profileert hem niet alleen sterk en slim maar vooral menselijk en innemend. Max beschikt over een scherp observeringsvermogen waardoor hij degene is die de lijnen verbindt tussen twee opmerkelijke zaken. Het is duidelijk dat Österdahl zijn Russisch/Zweedse kennis ten beste gebruikt en je haast filmachtig gekluisterd bent aan dit verhaal. Want tjonge, internationale betrekkingen en spanning kunnen wel degelijk spannend op papier worden gezet, dat bewijst Österdahl nu voor de tweede keer! Zijn debuut Vraag niet om genade was ook om van te smullen maar deze is zo niet nóg beter.
Vanaf de eerste pagina is het wegleggen van deze dikke pil een onmogelijkheid. De proloog speelt zich af op de Russische onderzeeër Koersk waar meteen sprake is van een behoorlijke spanningsboog die abrupt stopt en vervolgens begint het verhaal met Max. Deze cliffhanger is subtiel en tergend maar je geduld wordt beloond. Max pakt je meteen vast en neemt je mee in een beeldend beschreven verhaal. Omgevingsschetsen zijn wederom filmisch, de personages spreken enorm aan, oude bekenden zoals Pashie, zij speelde een grote rol in Vraag niet om genade, spelen ook nu weer een rol. Het draait niet allen om Max, er is zoveel moois en spannends te lezen dat je eigenlijk ogen te kort komt. Je krijgt echt binding met de hoofdrolspelers op deze manier en omdat ze zo realistisch zijn neergezet kost je dat geen enkele moeite. De dialogen voelen ook zo ongekunsteld aan, alsof je zelf getuige bent van deze gesprekken en ze voor je neus plaatsvinden.
Dus ja, wederom ben ik super enthousiast over het werk van Martin Österdahl. Het was opnieuw smullen. Gelukkig heeft hij een derde deel met voormalig elite- militair Max Anger geschreven want deze man is zó fascinerend. Geplaagd door nachtmerries (PTSS) en zijn persoonlijke bagage weet hij zich rationeel staande te houden in benarde situaties maar zijn menselijke trekjes blijven de bovenhand voeren. Volgens mij kan Österdahl nog boeken vol schrijven met deze man want Max lijkt voorlopig een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie. Het is nog even wachten op de vertaling voordat deze in Nederland (hopelijk) wordt uitgebracht. Gezien wat hij tot nu toe heeft geschreven ben ik benieuwd of het geheel wederom een mix zal zijn van Russisch/Zweedse spanning. Hoe dan ook, ik kijk er enorm naar uit.
Dodenlijst krijgt net als zijn voorganger Vraag niet om genade vijf sterren, geen twijfel daar.

5 estrellas como ya le di al primer libro de Martin Österdahl, y es que he disfrutado de la primera a la última página! Tiene una trama muy interesante, con el suceso del Kursk, tramas de la guerra fría y un asesino en serie. Aunque se puede leer sin haber leído el primero, las historias de los personajes y sus relaciones evolucionan, así que recomendaría leerlos en orden. En realidad este fue el primer volumen que vi del autor, y al buscarlo en Goodreads me di cuenta de que era el segundo de la serie Max Anger, así que busqué el primero, aunque la trama que me había llamado la atención era la de este.
Esta muy bien escrito y el autor se toma su tiempo para que todas las tramas queden claras, no deja nada al azar ni se precipita a medida que va avanzando el libro. Me parece muy interesante el punto de vista único desde el que trata conflictos históricos que se suelen ver siempre desde la misma perspectiva. Todo en este libro me ha gustado, especialmente el diseño de portada y del lomo, es perfecto para mi biblioteca y aunque ha sido mi primera lectura de 2019, casi seguro que estará entre las diez favoritas de este año. Lo recomiendo y espero que publiquen más de esta serie, creo que ya ha salido el tercero en Suecia🤗

Yesssss! Wat een geweldige thriller! Nog beter dan het eerste boek in deze serie en als ik het einde van dit boek goed gelezen heb komt er zeker weten nog een vervolg!
De spanning wordt zo mooi opgebouwd en het verhaal zit echt goed in elkaar. Grappig is wel dat ik lang niet alles begrijp qua militaire en politieke termen en vooral verbanden. Dat toont maar weer aan hoe goed dit geschreven is want ik kon het wel gewoon volgen en het gebrek aan begrip belemmerde me niet in mijn leesplezier.
Dit boek gaat weer over Max Anger, een Zweed die werkt voor Vektor, een bedrijf dat zich bezighoudt met Zweeds-Russische betrekkingen. Hij raakt betrokken bij het onderzoek naar een aantal moordzaken op Zweeds grondgebied waar de Russen van verdacht worden. Maar uiteraard is niets wat het lijkt.
Heerlijk boek, helemaal als je van Scandinavische thrillers houdt!

Much Better than the 1st book
The characters are deep and well.drawn. The plot is thick, complex , but manages to move the reader along at a quick rate. The narrative shifts from various perspectives, past and present. Well researched history and relevant geopolitical issues are all thrown into the mix, and it works. It all makes for a deeply satisfying thriller you can read without guilt.

Refreshing plot. Traded a book I had just finished for this one while on a cruise. Really glad to have found it. As proficient as I am in Swedish, which I do not claim to be, the book is very well written. While the storyline delves into the characters' actions and motives, it sets the scenes in a way that makes me imagine I am a part of the story. The detail led me into the scene as a silent observer, one could say.

A massive novel, with changing settings and times, but it's not too complicated. It's well written, including a very good translation, and the characters are very well described. The plot is dependent on some strange decisions by the main characters, and there is too much about fertility, but it's a very enjoyable book.

Het is wel even schakelen soms, omdat er verschillende geschiedenissen door elkaar lopen; maar uiteindelijk valt het allemaal samen. Het heeft wat weg van James Bond - of de boeken van de schrijver Ludlum. Het mooie van dit boek is, dat Rusland erbij betrokken is - een andere invalshoek.

one really learns a whole new way of life with these books I love the books from the complete area of norway sweden and denmark the way writers are no holes bared just as is, scary frightening and explicxit.

I have had a hard time to follow the story line, because the author switch character in every chapter. Of course, the book follows a few characters, but still too many for my taste.
So if you like war and political books. I welcome you to read it.

En härlig actionthriller! Förhoppningsvis lite för fantasifull men baltutlämningen är en skamfläck i vår historia, så vem vet. Kul med samarbetet mellan Max och Sofia. Mycket läsvärd!

Definitely better than the first book! It reminded me of the ‘Da Vinci Code’ by Dan Brown. It beautiful to see how the dots connect in the end.
