The basic theme of life being an elusive experience and not something you can capture and keep forever is brought out beautifully. Jay's life turns upside down when he gets lost at sea on a fantastic heaven like island, a place where he learns the true meaning of existence. Each question about his life is tackled in a manner that helps him to let go of the external baggage of materialism and to embrace life with gratitude in its entirety without expectations...A relevant story for everyone to ponder about.

A tale of growth and redemption

This was an interesting story, told at times in a way that was difficult to understand because of the English of the narrator. Once you get used to it though it is reminiscent in some ways of Robinson Crueso, if he was first gen American. Both Jay and his cousin Gina will learn that there is more to life than what they have, but only with courage will they achieve it.

Ruchira Khanna's R.S.V.P intrigued me. The title and the cover of the page suggested a tranquility that I was searching for at that moment. Having read her books earlier, like Choices and Voyages, I was ready for some heavy, contemplative reads. I generally avoid these kinds of books since I need to lighten my mind with books and not go into a thinking spree. But I am glad I picked up this book.

Coming to the story, it started off a bit slow with the introduction of Jay and his dog Yogi. Jay is a loner, sort of, if his chats with the delivery man are not taken into consideration. He has been ditched by his girlfriend and has lost all his love for life. Enter his cousin Gina who pushes him towards his Life and he decides to go on a cruise - only with Yogi. Life again takes a turn when he is shipwrecked and lands up on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, on an island, where money has no value.

Open wounds are healed, emotional scratches are looked into, relationships and their meaning are contemplated upon. Try as I might, I couldn't help asking a few questions to myself as I read along. To this extent, my friends too started asking me about my mood swings. Ruchira Khanna has a way of dwelling on the small issues of life that we often overlook.

Analysing the relationships in this book, I could divide them into that of a brother and sister, friends, mother, and son and one that you have with your pet. Different perspectives make a man behave differently. Ms. Khanna has a very good way of analyzing different moods of a human being and that can be applied to all of us. One eg. When someone ditches you, you tend to cling more to material things. That is what happened to Jay when Sasha leaves him. I found this statement very thought-provoking. Such minute things in life, we often neglect.

Coming to the characterizations, Ms. Khanna has taken a few creative liberties. Especially with Yogi. But the bond she has managed to create between the canine and his master is applaudable. I would have loved to see the less dramatism where the swimming scene was concerned but when I see my Fluffy, I just want to hug all the dogs in this world. So they can do anything they want, I really don't care as long as they are loved. Ms. Khanna is going to win many hearts just because of the way she has portrayed Yogi.

The relationship between Gina and Jay is another one worth pondering. While I would say Matt was Jay's conscious, Gina was definitely his anchor to Life. Well brought out in every scene. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter are like a treasure hunt and I started looking forward to what the next chapter will bring.

Having said that, Ms. Khanna has a tendency to incline towards telling rather than showing. Sometimes I wanted to see a scene, feel the anger or the pain that the characters were feeling. The liberal usage of adverbs with every feeling didn't do much to my imagination. Another thing which could be avoided is mass actions. Everyone behaving the same way at a certain point in time. Not everyone can gasp together nor turn to look wide eyes at that the same point of time.

Overall this book is a must read for those who like reading about Life and thinking about Life. I loved it. I loved thinking about my friendships, I even forgave my editors for making my miserable. I forgave a friend of mine who invited me to a party, canceled the party and forgot to tell me. She had the privilege of seeing me in all my make up glory. So Ms. Khanna, I have a lot to thank you for.

The book has a wonderful storyline that takes you on a journey as the protagonist takes a journey to find himself. The story told through Jay in the first half shows the monotonous life he was living in pursuit of material comforts, and how for him everything was a transaction with no space for emotions. The story is excellently told, and the reader gets to experience the emotions that Jay is feeling through vivid imagery and Ruchira’s words. Another thing that stands out is that the story moves on its own, without much required to do the same. The second half of the book is something that is what took me by surprise. The manner in which the story transforms is an experience in itself. I did feel that the first half of the book did drag for a bit and probably could have been trimmed to enhance the reading experience, but the second half moves at a decent pace. The climax of the story is well crafted, and it is a wonderful Christmas story.

Coming to the characters, the arc of Jay was something that takes the show away. His association of identity with money and material life and its transformation into a person who is able to detach is very well told. Gina was a wonderful character, a polar opposite to Jay and she was the one who manages to balance the story in the first half. Mack and his island are people who inspired not only Jay, but me as well and that part of the story is a wonderful fable that entertains and teaches. Lastly, Yogi as a character did not speak much, but highlighted the fact that love as an emotion creates inseparable bonds, one that can transcend species and time.

"RSVP" by Ruchira Khanna is a heartfelt story about Jay Sethi, an Indian-born American facing the challenges of a fractured family, unfulfilled love, and financial woes. Seeking a fresh start in a small Californian town with his dog Yogi, Jay embarks on a cruise that leads to an unexpected shipwreck on a magical island.

The first part of the book delves into Jay’s monotonous, materialistic life, effectively conveying his emotional struggles. Although this section can feel slow, it sets the stage for the transformative journey that follows. The pace quickens in the second half as Jay’s experiences on the island bring excitement and deeper understanding.

Jay’s evolution from a materialistic individual to someone who values emotional connections is compelling. The island characters, particularly Mack, provide profound insights that help Jay heal. Gina, from Jay’s past, adds warmth and balance to the narrative, while Yogi represents unconditional love and loyalty. I love the bonding between Jay and Yogi. The way Yogi licks his owner when he feels stressed, and Jay lays with the dog over him, allowing Yogi to soothe his fraying nerves, is beautifully depicted. It reminded me of my own cat, whom I love so much. Cuddling with her makes any sadness go away.

Overall, "RSVP" is a touching exploration of family and love. Despite its slow start, the story picks up and concludes on a satisfying, heartwarming note. Ruchira Khanna skillfully blends reality with fantasy, making "RSVP" a memorable and meaningful read.

Title: A Captivating Journey of Redemption and Rediscovery

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

Review:

"RSVP" by Ruchira Khanna is a poignant and heartfelt novel that delves into the complexities of family, love, and the transformative power of letting go. Set against the backdrop of Jay Sethi's life, an Indian-born American struggling with the repercussions of a fractured family, this book takes readers on an emotional journey of self-discovery and second chances.

The story follows Jay as he navigates the consequences of unrequited love and mounting financial struggles. Seeking solace and a fresh start, he settles in a quaint California town with his loyal canine companion, Yogi. However, fate has other plans for him when he finds himself shipwrecked and washed ashore on a remote island. It is in this unexpected twist of destiny that Jay begins to unravel the significance of love, forgiveness, and the power of embracing the present moment.

One of the notable strengths of this novel lies in the beautifully drawn characters that populate its pages. Jay Sethi, the protagonist, is a relatable and sympathetic figure, whose journey of self-reflection and growth resonates deeply with readers. Through his eyes, we witness the weight of his past choices and the longing to make amends for lost time. The supporting characters, both on the island and in Jay's life, are equally well-developed, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. Their interactions and relationships create a tapestry of human emotions, exploring themes of regret, forgiveness, and the enduring bonds of family.

Ruchira Khanna's writing style is engaging and evocative, effortlessly immersing readers in the settings and emotions of the story. The prose is descriptive yet accessible, allowing for a seamless reading experience. The author masterfully explores the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion, drawing readers into Jay's world and making them question the nature of perception and truth.

While the book cover may appear simplistic at first glance, it perfectly captures the essence of the story within. Its subdued colors and the image hint at the themes of fractured relationships and the potential for healing and rebuilding.

"RSVP" tackles profound themes with grace and sensitivity. It explores the importance of embracing love, forgiveness, and the power of letting go of the past. Through Jay's journey, the author invites readers to reflect on their own lives, reminding us of the transformative potential in embracing the present and making amends for past mistakes.

The only minor critique of the book is that certain sections could have been further developed, particularly in terms of delving deeper into the emotional landscapes of the characters. However, this does not significantly detract from the overall impact of the narrative.

In conclusion, "RSVP" is a captivating and soul-stirring novel that navigates the intricacies of love, family, and redemption. Ruchira Khanna's storytelling prowess shines through, creating a world that is both relatable and inspiring. With its well-drawn characters, evocative prose, and thought-provoking themes, this book is a heartfelt exploration of second chances and the enduring power of love.

Immersed me in another life

At first the language and syntax made it hard for this Yank to read this book. But once I got the hang of it, the author’s use of Indian American vernacular immersed me in Jay’s story. This is a great book about finding your way through hardships and what’s really important in life. It also gave me a fascinating glimpse at what it’s like to be a 1st generation American. The book is full of truthful and moving experiences in a refreshing way.

"RSVP" by Ruchira Khanna narrates the tale of Jay, an Indo-American man who loses all faith in life after his partner cheats on him and breaks his heart. Under persistent pressure from his cousin Gina, who wants to help Jay return to a regular life, the narrative begins when he leaves the concrete jungle and its continual noise pollution behind to live on an island.

The book explores the challenges experienced by immigrants and non-Americans attempting to maintain their cultural identity in the middle of a melting pot of varied cultures through Jay's experiences. I was a little put out by Gina's character because it felt like she used Jay's position in the shop as leverage for her own academic goals.

From the concrete jungle and its relentless noise pollution, the story begins when he relocates to an island. I'm positive that Yogi, the dog that follows Jay on his quest for self-discovery, will win the reader over immediately. This journey is must read for everyone and after reading most probably a reader would feel satisfied and a bit of life changing experience.

Chapter 16, where Jay and Yogi find themselves on a rocking ship, is where the action of the book takes place. Not only does this scenario depict the physical turbulence, but it also represents Jay's inner difficulties.

The Language of the Book Is Lucid. The Writing Style Is Gripping, and the Cover of the Book Is Captivating. The Title Is even more Intriguing.

For someone who enjoys reading contemporary fiction stories, the book is a good choice.

"R.S.V.P." by Ruchira Khanna is the story of Jay Sethi, an Indian-born American, struggling with his life. The past trauma he has had from his family, the poor financial situation, made him settle in a small town in California, with his canine companion, named Yogi.

As he was embarking towards his destiny, fate had something else written for him. As the story proceeds, Jay finds himself shipwrecked and on a remote island. The author vividly describes the weather, the situations he was going through, the people around him, and his anxiety and tension.

He was welcomed by McKinley on the island. It was there, on the island where Jay understood a lot about life, and considered giving a second chance to himself.

The part I loved the most got to be the one after Jay and Yogi reached the island. I loved how Mack befriended Jay, made sure he was okay and helped him. Jay decided to share his life story with Mack, and told him how his heart ached on listening to his dad's decision. I loved McKinley's character, it was simple yet powerful.

The author very beautifully paints the picture of the scenes going on through the story. Some of the parts were very heartwarming. All the characters are well-described and relatable, and specifically the supporting Yogi. I loved Yogi.

Altogether, I loved the story and the concept.

RSVP-A novel is nothing that what Ruchira Khanna has written earlier and she treads on a rather unique path of self-discovery and human complexity in shaping the main protagonist and his tryst with a fallacious destiny.

There is something very deep and haunting about love: “Just because love was not good to you, doesn’t mean it will be bad for others as well.” Ruchira Khanna lends credence on the battles and pathos depicting Jay who is unlike the quintessential hero breaking bones. He is flawed, likeable and relatable in today’s times. As a pet, Yogi is an alter ego to Jai’s character, a loyal friend and protective angel serving as a shield to protect his master from the demons manifesting in the head.

RSVP is a complex and difficult story to write for the characters, particularly Jay finds himself in an entangled web of sort and meets fellow travelers, right from Maya, Gina, Cee-Cee, Mack and his father. The author has ingeniously struck the right chord in depicting the various incidents, fear of drowning, reluctance to love, shedding the burden of the past and coming face to face with the ugly truth. She skilfully avoids numerous pitfalls to make the story emerge victoriously.

Pebble is thrown at the character in a strange way as he is flung to witness the true meaning of life in a tribal life that has no place for materialism where a modern urban existence is rendered irrelevant. A child is born in the tribe. Everyone ask something selflessly not for themselves but the newborn, pushing us to reflect on this natural, human tendency of looking down at tribes who are much more advanced than we think we are. An interesting conversation takes place between Jay, the city man and Mack, a boy belonging to tribal life on unadulterated love, getting brutal on awakening the soul on this hidden power, albeit traveling miles through the mind. The metaphysical, subconscious mind and consciousness is treated with depth.

"RSVP" by Ruchira Khanna is a heartfelt as well as emotional novel that delves into relationships, and self-discovery.

The plot centers on Jay Sethi, a man in his early 30s who is dealing with the emotional baggage of his troubled past. Jay is disconnected from life, burdened by the loss of his mother and the estrangement from his father. The emotional distance from his father, aggravated by misunderstandings and a lack of communication, haunts him, leaving him cynical and apathetic towards relationships and life in general.

The story begins when Jay receives an unusual invitation—an RSVP to attend a mysterious event that promises closure and emotional healing. Despite initial skepticism, Jay decides to attend, and this decision sets him on a path of rediscovery. The event, guided by spiritual elements and support from unexpected sources, leads Jay to confront his past and come to terms with his loss.

A moment which stayed with me was about a letter Jay never opened, because he had convinced himself that it was too late for any words to heal the wounds between his father. But as the sun begins to set, casting hues of orange and pink over the horizon, Jay hesitantly opens the envelope. His fingers tremble, and for a moment, he hesitates. Reading this letter feels like stepping into the unknown, a final confrontation with the man who abandoned him after his mother’s death - that emotional scene which I can't forget .

Through a series of vivid memories and soul-searching moments, the book explores themes of love, grief, and the importance of embracing one's true self. The author's writing is poetic and engaging, making RSVP a touching read that resonates with anyone who has faced the ups and downs of life's journey.

Ruchira Khanna's "RSVP" tells the story of Jay, an Indo-American guy who gets his heart broken after his partner cheats on him and looses all hope in his life. With the constant pressure from Gina, his cousin who tries to bring Jay to his normal life. The story starts once he moves to an island from the concrete jungle and the constant noise polllution. One thing I can say for sure is, the reader will definetly fall in love with Yogi, the dog who accompanies Jay in his journey to find himself. Author has creating a great character in Yogi, his mere presence influences Jay in his quest at all times. The story takes some twists and turns most of which I have not anticipated. Author subverts the expecations very well and his writing should be appreciated. The genre shift in the second half keeps the readers engaging. A high;ly recommended read

I found this book slow to start and the language is purely vernacular. But I found this point endearing, knowing many people with Indian accents I could really hear the voices. The formal language is true to form.
I adored the funny, quirky dog Yogi and as he had his own voice and thoughts. I usually wouldn't agree with a dog having a voice but this time I will give it a pass because we all can see what the pups are thinking most times, anyway. Giving him a voice makes it very special.
The story focuses more on character development rather than plot points which is ok but you still need to lean on a strong plot but that doesn't start until way into the book. Still, it kept my attention and made me think of life and how to balance my life with my own family responsibility.

"R.S.V.P.: A Novel" by Ruchira Khanna is a great book that examines the relationship between reality and illusion as well as the importance of family.

Readers are taken on a moving study of love, sorrow, and the power of atonement by Jay Sethi's journey in this novel. Jay, an American of Indian descent, has struggled with a shattered family since he was a teenager, suffering the pain of unrequited love and the weight of unpaid bills. The place where he finds comfort and embarks on a life-altering trip with his devoted companion, Yogi, is a Californian town, nevertheless.

However, destiny has other ideas for Jay, who ends up shipwrecked and abandoned on a deserted island. He starts to understand the true meaning of love and the healing potential of letting go during this unanticipated period of seclusion. I had a great time reading this. And I highly recommend this to you all.

It is a captivating novel that takes readers on a profound quest of self-discovery alongside the protagonist. Through the eyes of Jay, we witness the emptiness of a life solely focused on material gains, where emotions take a backseat.

The author skillfully paints a vivid picture of Jay's emotions, allowing readers to empathize with his journey. What sets this story apart is its organic flow, effortlessly carrying readers along. The unexpected transformation in the second half took me by surprise, adding an exciting twist to the narrative. While the first half could have been dense for a more engaging read, the second half maintains a steady pace. The well-crafted climax delivers a heartwarming storyline.

I like the importance of family connections and relationships, something this we need more of, since our world today seems to reflect on the more negative aspects. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter really spoke to me, as I know it did with Ruchira as well. Ruchira you have really beautiful writing. I love your writing style and you are very descriptive of what everything looks like. It was slow going for me for the first couple of chapters, but when Jay's cousin came into the scene that's when it started to pick up. For me it had the "Life of Pi" feel to it, since it also deals with knowing about finding out who you are (or more so who Jay is). I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes to reflect on what they have read and see if it can help in your own everyday life.

I love the quotes at the beginning of each chapter, look forward to and refer back to them. I'm including some of these in my quote collection. As usual, Ruchira's descriptive words enable me to picture every character and scene. The plot is engaging and the inclusion of Yogi sure to capture canine lovers.

Overall, a very warm, positive, hopeful story. I like the emphasis on the importance of family connections and relationships, something this world needs more of.

Excellent

Another masterpiece by this author. Just like Jay, we all have issues from our past. These issues hinder us from moving forward until we face them. Jay avoided his issues until circumstances forced him too.

I had a difficult time with the beginning of this novel. It was a slow start, and I had trouble with the lack of punctuation and some of the grammar. But as it picked up, I became more and more intrigued with the story. I don't want to give away the plot; however, the main character (Jay) is a parsimonious tea shop owner whose therapist has told him to make a "bucket list" of things he wants to do before he dies. He's been dropped by his fiancee, and so his life is devoted entirely to his work--and his dog, Yogi, which is another suggestion his therapist made--to adopt a rescue dog.

He's conflicted, confused about many things in his life, rarely calls his mother (although she's always, it seems, concerned about him), is obsessed with the fact that his fiancee left him, but his dog is his comfort. His cousin, Gina, comes to visit because she's going to use him as a study subject for her graduate degree in psychology. He decides this would be a great time to take a vacation, because he can leave Gina in charge of the tea shop while he's gone on vacation. He and Yogi leave on a cruise, and that's when wild things begin to happen.

I had difficulty getting into this book for probably the first 40 pages. It was slow, and I was getting tired of Jay's sanctimonious wallowing in self-pity because he no longer had a fiancee, and because his father had left the family when he was young. When Gina entered the picture, however, things began to happen. The plot evolved, and the book became more interesting.

I enjoyed the book in many ways, but I wanted to do some editing (e.g., the word "toward" is always "towards" in this book, and missing commas made it difficult for me to follow some of the sentences). I would give the plot and eventual resolution four-and-a-half stars, while I would most likely give the editing three, for averaging out to four stars.

I recommend this book, but I do caution that the first part is slow, and I encourage readers to continue on. It will be worth it.
