Cruel Curses #2

Veiled by Desire

Rate this book
Sometimes fate has other plans…

In Laith, when the moons are high, Tavarra gains the ability to walk the land, losing her seahorse-like tail. But should she remain out of the water, a curse will consume her, turning her into a beast with sharp fangs and long claws. A creature that, on some nights, becomes a rampaging monster.

Rhona and her village are under a sinister leader’s control. He took Rhona from the man she loves, stripped away her water ability, then forces her to retrieve a coveted prism that will increase his powers.

When Tavarra and Rhona cross paths, they agree to help each other succeed. They then embark on separate missions in hopes of breaking Tavarra’s curse and saving Rhona’s loved ones. But with an untamable beast inside Tavarra, and Rhona having to wander through a dangerous forest, nothing is certain...

Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Laura Thalassa, Holly Black and Sarah J. Maas. Veiled By Desire is the epic companion sequel filled with magic, friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, and a unique fae world that will make you wish you had a direct portal to.

Veiled By Desire is the 2nd book in the Laith series by Candace Robinson. This book will be published in November 2019 by Parliament Press, but I got my hands on an early copy since I loved the first in the series so much. Jealous? You should be (sorry!) because it's fantastic and you really don't want to wait. Don't worry, I'm sure karma will get me back for those words.

Though connected by a few threads, this is a different story than the last. At first, I was puzzled in a good way. Robinson alternates chapters by telling the tale of two different sets of characters, neither seemingly related to the ones I treasured in Clouded By Envy. As the story unfolds, I found myself guessing who was related to whom between the books, but remember, this is a fantasy novel, so there are other ways of connections being made that won't be obvious at first... and then, we learn the fate of our beloved bats from yesteryear. The timeline is different, which means we have a different cast, and of course, nature has taken its course. Dynamite!

It's hard to choose which characters I loved the most in this installment. Tavarra is probably the most memorable and appealing - the mix of beauty and anger is phenomenal. Character creation is probably Robinson's biggest talent, at least to me. She's a fantastic writer, and her plots and settings are equally strong; however, I adore the creatures she creates and find myself rooting for them to succeed in meeting their goals. It's usually someone struggling to find their voice or escape a horror they're trapped within. While no different this time, there is a whole new level between the parallel stories and eventual collision... one that will grip you tightly and never let you relax.

Robinson crushed me. I must say, I only stopped reading the book to cook dinner and to cease gritting my teeth in frustration (the positive kind). She created such an imaginative and powerful story, my heart raced and my emotions fluttered through the entire mid-section as little secrets and truths kept popping up, and then boom... splat... pow. Think of those cartoon bubbles from our superheroes -- only not funny! Hard to take. Made me sad. Essential to the story, but wow... I needed a breather for maybe ten minutes just to catch myself from screaming.

I jumped back in to finish the last 15% and yikes... she clobbered me again! This time, I was slightly prepared but still shocked. Good writers know how to do that to you. I can't give this anything less than five stars, but trust me, they are five angry, emotional, hopeful, concerned, and powerful stars to match the strength of this story. The climax scenes are outstanding, and at the end, I'm left with so much on my mind... but most of all is how much I really don't think I can wait until sometime in 2020 for the third release in this series. Please let me have an early holiday present? See... I told you karma would come around to bite me soon.

Veiled by Desire by Candace Robinson is the second book of the romantic fantasy Laith series. Now normally with fantasy series I usually stress how it’s best to read from the beginning but this one takes a page out of the romance genre and switched up characters. Then the author pulled a complete switcharoo on this series and even having read the first book I started off thinking what the heck does this have to do with the last?

Being familiar with Candace Robinson’s books I was already aware of her creativity with her settings and characters so despite wondering what I’d gotten into with the complete change from book one I knew to be patient and see where this headed. Things seemed just as creative following two different character stories simultaneously starting with a look to the past then picking up where they are now.

The story is set in the world of Laith where we find Tavarra who felt a tad like the Little Mermaid for a few pages. Coming from the sea Tavarra had been granted one night to find her love. When he didn’t show Tavarra ends up being cursed and transforming into a monster that kills. Rhona has been stripped of her abilities and is under the control her village’s leader having been sent on a dangerous task.

Now of course with the alternating style the story feels as if you are reading two separate books for a while. Eventually though readers are rewarded not only with joining the new characters they have been following on their adventure but for those having read the first book it connects all of the story. Very creative and different take again coming from the author’s imaginative mind. The series is definitely something out of the ordinary for fantasy fans.

I received an advance copy from the author.

Candace Robinson’s VEILED BY DESIRE showcases her gift for storytelling, once again! Enter the magical landscape she creates where one girl faces a curse that will turn her into a monster filled with brutality. Tavarra longed to be a land creature, but it came with a price she hadn’t realized was so high.

Rhona lives in a village where the true monster is the evil ruler who has forced her on a quest she cannot fail. Tavarra and Rhona will discover not only each other, but a friendship where one girl can hopefully help the other.

Discover the power of love, trust and friendship in the face of the darker side of humanity as these two set out to do the impossible for each other.

Talk about an incredible world built on pure imagination mixed with a dose of reality making these characters and their incredible world come to life! Candace Robinson has given life to her characters, toyed with their hearts and given them the tools to succeed, but can they when the odds are stacked so highly against them?

Wonderful storytelling, amazing world-building and never a slow or dull moment as this author’s words come flying off the pages!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Candace Robinson! This is my honest and voluntary review.

My fourth Candace Robinson read and she hasn't failed me yet!

This is the second instalment in the Laith series and I think it just about stole my heart a little more than its predecessor 🖤 I won't divulge a synopsis here to abstain from spoiling it but here's a few words from the author's own review to tempt you: "Werewolf, kisses, swords, creepy trees, water ability, clovers, and more!"

This acts as more of a spin-off to the first book and returns the reader to the magical kingdom of Laith. The threads that interconnect the two were cleverly entangled throughout the story but I also won't reveal the connections here!

Despite longing to return to my previously beloved characters, I found a whole new cast to root for here. This is where my ultimate adoration for Candace's creations stem - her ability to create authentic figures and imbue them with an equal store of fierceness and vulnerabilities. Quiet wit abounds too, which also helps.

The setting allowed for the whimsy to become heightened and my imagination was immediately held captive inside this upside-down fairy-tale-esque fantasy. I flew through it as quickly as the compulsive readability of her writing allowed and loved every step of the journey.

Book 1) Clouded By Envy: ★★★★

I received a copy of this book via the author, Candace Robinson, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! In no way does this affect my rating or review.

First off, I want to say that I love this world that Candace has created. It feels like anything is possible in Laith. Anyone can exist there, and only the surprising should be expected. While it felt like a place that was familiar due to some of the characters, the setting felt wildly foreign. Dare I say that this is her best novel yet?

Veiled By Desire centers around a Werewolf-once-Siren? (I believe…) Tavarra is raised in the ocean along with her sister. Her only desire is to live on land and walk upon two legs.
Her heart never sang for the ocean--she didn’t know what it sang for anymore.

She frequently visited the shore, and ended up developing a relationship with a man. When she learned of a story that told her how to walk on land, she had to try, even if it wasn’t permanent. Tavarra thought that she had escaped the icy depths forever, but her sister followed her, to warn her about a curse that would consume whomever tried to stay on land for longer than a day.
There’s a curse if you stay out of the water too long.

Tavarra overstayed her welcome, and the curse contorted her into a horrifying creature with fangs and an insatiable thirst for blood. To Tavarra’s dismay, her sister falls victim to her condition first. She can no longer return to the ocean, even if she wanted to.

Rhona is the descendant of a bat--a rare creature in the land of Laith. Often mislabeled as fairies, bats play a special role in the history of humans entering Laith. ( Clouded By Envy tells some of this story!)
”Luca and Wes were my great-great-great grandparents somewhere down the line. Luca’s the one who saved our ancestors and brought us here,” she said with pride. “His mother, Bray was a bat, so in a way, I”m descended from one.”

Although she appears to be human, Rhona has the ability to turn into water, heal quickly, and make things bloom or wither with vitality. Her special abilities glean the attention of Belen, a powerful and intimidating man in her village that regularly tested her skills in an unorthodox manner. Despite how Belen treated Rhona, Belen’s son Perin, becomes Rhona’s closest friend. After Rhona mysteriously loses her abilities, she learns of a plot that will be her undoing, and change the way she feels about those that are closest to her.

I absolutely love the way this story is fashioned. It alternates between the stories of Rhona, Perrin and Quil, and Tavarra and Eza. The story also transitions between the past and present, and makes for a very dynamic read. It is in this fashion that we come to learn about how each of the characters’ stories intertwine. I found this style of storytelling to be very refreshing, and kept my interest the entire way through.

I really enjoyed this addition to the Laith series, and am eagerly anticipating Shadowed By Despair which is also set in Laith, and about Zombies. The only thing that was to my disliking was that the ending felt rushed. This is more of a personal preference, but I felt that it was an opportunity to add in a little more information about Laith and wrap up the characters’ stories. Either way, I really enjoyed this book! FYI, get ready for some heartbreak!

Vulgarity: Moderate
Sexual content: Several scenes of love-making with some explicit content.
Violence: Moderate with some gore.

My Rating: ★★★★1/2

This is book 2 in a trilogy and it’s not my first time I’ve started not reading the first 😂 BUT the thing is, with Veiled, you can. The story is a companion to Clouded by Envy and while the world and creatures are similar, you’ll really dig the differences. I read them out of order and still loved them!

There is a beautiful and heartbreaking parallel drawn between a youthful story of love that’s in its beginning stages and one that has already ended in misery and hard lessons learned.

Veiled by Desire speaks of human nature, of the animal within us - and of hope, second chances, and love conquering all. While a happy ending may be hard to fathom in Laith, throughout the read my heart kept hoping for one!! (And I won’t spoil if it comes or not 😉)

This is a story that can be read on its own or following Clouded. and I HIGHLY recommend you read it. With beautiful prose and honesty, the author brings back to life the old adage of “don’t judge a book by its cover” because nothing in this story is what it seems.

The romance is beautiful, the trials are heartbreaking but through it all lingers a sense of hope... Of more to come. And my favourite character in this, Tavarra, is a force to be reckoned with! The world comes alive within the pages and reads like a movie, one that’ll stay vivid in your mind for a while after you’re done reading it!

Absolute enthralling read from start to finish!

*Beta-read it from the amazing author and had the pleasure to read and ARC too*

This is a book that sucks you in from the beginning. The characters are so full of personality and make you have to follow them through the pages. It has so much originality and a plot that leaves you without a breath.

I loved all the characters, and the authors gives you several to fall in love with. I found myself with my jaw dropped at times and wanting to cry for them in others.

I loved everything about this book. The suspense, relationships, emotional rollercoaster, and overall story building. The paranormal is perfect and the author hit this book out of the park.

If you have read Clouded By Envy, then Veiled By Desire takes place in the same world that two of the main characters from Clouded come from, the world of Laith. Although it is a standalone. No need to have read Clouded By Envy, but it will have added to the enjoyment.

The author does such a great job with world building in this book. The world of Laith is filled with different and strange things. Woods that bleed, and that come alive, people with powers, four leaf clover that has power, and there’s even a werewolf in this one. The details In the world building are so well described, that you can picture it like you’re there in Laith yourself. She leaves just enough to the imagination to keep us engaged.

The characters...this author always writes her characters well. She writes dialogue so seamlessly that the characters become real, and you become wrapped up in them. I fell so in love with the characters, that I still find it hard to choose a favorite. Every time I try I end up with a bunch, lol! Eza, Tavarra, Perin, Quil & Rhona. They are all such great characters, I can’t say enough about. I feel like I could write a paragraph for each of them. But I won’t. I will leave it up to you to read the book and learn how AMAZING, how BRILLIANT this cast of characters really is!!!!

Don’t miss this AMAZING book!!! I highly, highly recommend it to all!!! INFINITY OF STARS for this one!!

I love all the characters. They made my heart swell each time. The story is properly built, but the timeline is not clear for me as they seem to be moving from a place to another in such unrealistic pace. Or are the places so closed from each other? And the end breaks my heart. One, is because of the deaths of loved ones, two, is because it seems like it ends in a rushed. I need more! I have not read the first book. I just realised this is the sequel once the arc is given to me. Thank You Netgalley!

The story follows Tavarra, a sea dweller or you can say mermaid. She fell in love with a human, Brice but got her heart broken when her sister Nezarra shown her something. She had been cursed into a beast because she stayed too long on land. Thus, her journey of finding the stone of desire began. Along the way, she met amazing people that became her friends. I love the friendship, the love between two people and the love between family members potrayed in this book. They are the purest! Especially the friendship between Tavarra and Eza. They're my favourite!

At the same time, there is another quest of finding the dark prism. Perin and Rhona had been friends since childhood, and along the journey, Rhona found out the truth that makes her feel she's not alone.

Will they succeed finding the stones? What is the truth revealed along the journey?

The story is not draggy at all and it is packed. Heads up to the explicit contents! This might not be suitable for the young readers.

First, I want to give my only complaint about this story out of the way. Tavarra, why? No! The ocean is so much better than land. Don't come here. Or better yet, let me trade places with you! I love the ocean, well any water in general... Sorry, I'll pull myself together now.

I want to say that I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I've been kicked off of street teams for being honest so never fear, I won't feed you lies. Now, let's actually talk about this one, shall we?

Wonderfully written, engrossing to the point I read it all I one sitting, sure my eyes hurt but I just couldn't put it done! So it's totally worth the eye strain. Tavarra and Rhona and fleshed out characters that are flawed and real. That is always the most important thing to me, characters that feel real. The struggles they have are relatable even though we are dealing with magical things. The author relates the magical parts perfectly to real life.

This can be read first if the blurb sounds more appealing to you but I would say start with the first because it is also so freaking good! Or read this first and then read Clouded, just make sure to read them both! Totally worth it!

All in all, a knockout!

“When humans came to Laith hundreds of years ago, it was said that they had gained abilities to adjust to their new world as soon as they crossed over from a dying Earth.” The author’s soaring, unbridled imagination flies away to this magical, mystical place and never comes back.
Mermaid turned into a beast.
Shape shifting from physical form to liquid.
A pet bat.
Otherworldly romance.
Horrible monsters.
“She hated living in the sea, but she never hated looking from the outside in. Now, the push and pull of the water only felt like death...”
She was conflicted, tormented by a curse.
“As if meeting a lover, the water met the sand, giving it a brief kiss before rolling back.”
“Her heart never sang for the ocean—she didn’t know what it sang for anymore.”
“All that remained in her soul, heart, and existence, was hunger. She yearned and thirsted for blood, meat, and bones.”

Another winner from author Candace Robinson! This book is set in Laith (from Clouded by Envy) but would be okay if you read it first. I love love loved this story!!! It starts out with Tavarra, a sea dweller, who wants to be human (little mermaid vibes) and your heart will break for her. Eza is quirky and amazing, Candace always write the best side kicks. Quil 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 yaaaaaas. This book is sexy and fun. Loved it!

Loving how unique this series is! Interesting creatures and a cool world setting. We have 2 POV’s, Rhona and Tavarra. Both storylines drew me in; both ladies have some fun characteristics, loved the magical elements to Rhona, and Tavarra’s origins and curse. Tavarra is a bit unhinged at times because she’s dealing with something she can’t control, but loved her tenacity and heart. Rhona kicks butt and will go out on a limb for those she loves. Both ladies storylines have some heartbreaking elements, but they are both strong. They both have to go through a lot to combat the evil in their world. It’s an adventure!

Rhona and her friend Perin are on a quest to find a magical prism. Along the way they run into a male from Rhona’s past; there’s a connection there, but there’s some things that stand between them. There’s a strong evil out to do nefarious things.

Tavarra gave up her home for love, but that love proved untrue. She’s been cursed with a terrible affliction, so along with her talking bat friend, Eza, she’s on a quest for a magical source that will help her.

Overall, a wonderful, engrossing story! Loved it!

Candace Robinson, why do you always do this to me? I am devestated.

In comparison to the first book, I found myself missing Wes and Bray a ton. I didn’t immediately click with the characters in this one–but things certainly changed along the way, which we’ll get to.

What I Liked:
1. Despite me not immediately clicking with the characters, they captured my interest regardless. They were all very well developed and I grew very attached them by the end (take note Candace–I am not okay right now).

2. There was so much romance to love in this book, so all the warm fuzzies–but then a lot of angst too! These characters are stubborn, strong and quick to fight with each other.

3. The worldbuilding and description was incredible and everything you’d love in a fantasy novel! Some of the settings were incredibly creepy and gave me chills.

What I Disliked:
1. I think you know what I disliked Candace. I won’t spoil it here but I think you know.

Spoiler Section Thoughts:
(Don’t read this part until you’ve read the book)

Final Thoughts:
This book was amazing. It sucked me in and kept me hooked and then the ending was bittersweet. I loved the characters, the paranormal aspect, and the suspense throughout.

Veiled By Desire is the second book in Candace Robinson’s Laith series. Although this is the second book in the series, it is more of a companion novel than a sequel. There are elements and references that will be better understood if you have read Clouded By Envy, but you do not need to have read it to understand this story. The story within Veiled By Desire works perfectly fine without any prior knowledge.

With Veiled By Desire, Candace Robinson demonstrates her ability to weave many well-loved elements into a single story. Such is always the case with the author’s work, and this time in no different. The difference, however, is in the elements we get to enjoy. Not only do we get to see more of the creatures of Laith that we found out some details about in the first book, but we also get introduced to knew elements that add twists to beloved stories. After all, I never expected to experience a story in which mermaids and werewolves were interwoven in such a wonderful way.

It’s more than just a story that combines beloved fantasy elements and creates something new, it’s also a tale that hooks you and has you desperate to see how everything plays out. You’re sucked right in and find yourself rooting for the characters, hoping for their happy endings, feeling all they feel throughout. With each new element that is introduced, you’re hooked deeper, and before you know what’s happened you’ve finished the book and are in need of more.

Without a doubt, I cannot wait to get my hands on the third book to see what more Candace Robinson is going to add to this world.

I want to start off by saying thank you to the author for giving me ebook arc copy to read. In return for my honest thoughts and review. I have not one bad thing I didn’t like about this book or characters I didn’t like. I really enjoyed each character in the story. I enjoy reading Candace books because they are so very different. I enjoyed the characters a lot in this second book. How they came together regardless of how they came together and how they helped each other. The two female character’s admired them and felt for them in some kind way. Writing never disappointed me I wasn’t bored or felt like I wasn’t getting into the story. I felt apart of it. Got sad and happy while reading. Highly recommend this book curses, secrets, coming together, love, new find friendships. This book comes out November 19, 2019 preordered now or get when it comes out. I will buying my own copy.

Opinions: I originally gave Clouded by Envy 4/5 stars, but I feel like giving Veiled by Desire just one more star isn't fair. As I'm writing this, I'm struggling to explain why I prefer the sequel to the original book, so I will put it simply: everything in Veiled by Desire was outstandingly better. Plot was interesting in the first book? Plot was groundbreaking here. Writing style was descriptive in Clouded by Envy? Writing style was engaging and thrilling in Veiled by Desire. This is a meaningful sequel to an already fantastic series full of realistic and connectable characters, troublesome quests, and creative supernatural creatures. Clouded by Envy and Veiled by Desire are both must-reads!

My Favourite Thing: Veiled by Desire was, except for the setting and a few ties, unrelated to the story of Clouded by Envy. I found it very easy to enjoy reading Veiled by Desire because the atmosphere and genre was the same but new characters, conflicts, and themes were unique and thrilling. Without having to adapt to the world, I was able to focus on the other elements. All in all, Robinson's writing style and plot choices were satisfying and refined!

Tavarra and Rhona are rockstars, and this is one of the best female-led fantasy books I have ever read. They are so strong and fleshed out. The subtle intricacies of Laith are well-described and the world feels both real and phantasmic because of the interactions of the characters written into it. This is a second book, but you could read this as a stand-alone with no problem, and it doesn't suffer from the lag sometimes seen in middle sets of stories. Fans of old creatures like mermaids, fairies, and even werewolves will adore this read.

This book was received from the Author, and Publisher, in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Quil picked up the instrument from the top of his pack and played a new melody that made her body want to dance, her soul to fly, and her heart to beat with the rhythm. Rhona wished she could stay here, live beside the river, and dance to his music all day, every day. But that could never happen."

After reading “Clouded by Envy,” I have impatiently to get back into the magical world of Laith. Once again the author pulls you in to her fascinating, solid epic fantasy. There a lot of familiar magical items and creatures, along with the mythology of Luca, jovkins, bats, and the Stone of Desire.
Veiled by Desire,is a stunning book in this series, the author engages the reader with a whole new depth to Laith. This wonderful wonderful fantasy is incredible, with stellar world building. The characters are compelling and fleshing out.
They compliment this fantasy world in a way that drew me right in the beginning, and kept me reading all the way through to the end.
The prose and writing flows and the chapters are told in alternating points of view and there are many places where the past is explained through past-present meticulous transitions.
This riveting storyline had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole novel and the relationships and the friendships in this story are beautiful depicted.
Engaging, strong female led characters makes this one of my favorite books this year.
I love love fantasy books, and this book is exceptional, and has exceeded my expectations for a second book in a series. It can be standalone novel all by itself, but since I really enjoyed the first book, I would definitely recommend reading the first book book in the Laith series. Veiled By Desire is a companion book to Clouded by Envy.

I would definitely recommend this to my family and friends !

**This story is a companion novel and can be read without reading the first installment.**

I received this arc from Parliament Press for an honest review.

I have a love for sea-dwelling beings, dark curses and special abilities in fantastical worlds. This novel brings to life all of this and more. I happily found myself connecting with the characters of this novel and having a hard time getting over the “wtf” moments because of these connections. There is so much I want to say about this novel but I feel hinting at circumstances and possibilities will give away too much. The world building for Laith was well done. I did not get a chance to read the first novel but I’d like to believe more of the history and layout is described in book 1. Even with that I had no issues being captivated by this world. The magic is simplistic and woven intricately into the plot. Some scenarios may have felt too easily overcome but that didn’t take away from the story for me. Like I mentioned I really liked the characters in this book. No feelings of forced or lackluster personalities. I can’t wait to read the other books now!

Some sexual content and slight descriptions of physical child abuse that tie into the story. They are not overplayed or graphically abhorrent. Definitely recommend.

Candace Robinson has done it again! Laith, #1 was an outstanding read with phenomenal characters. It's mostly about a couple fairy type bats who escape the land of Laith, and the majority of the book is told on earth. So, when Candace approached me for a non-bios review of book #2 I instantly jumped onto Goodreads and helped myself to a few reviews. To see that this one is actually based in Laith, and I had a chance to explore deeper into this magical world, I was like a kid in a candy store.... gimme-gimme-gimme-gimme. Thank you Candace for allowing to read this book before it's publication date, it was everything I could have wanted from Laith and MORE, oh so much more!
Veiled by Desire not only places you on the edge of your seat in the very first chapter, but it grips you like a vice, holding you there tooth and nail, all the way to the extreme climatic ending. It bounces a little in time, and by characters, telling the tale of all creatures by sea and by land. Little by little Robinson is able to give hints and clues, sprinkling throughout the book in small doses that tie this book with the first. There's magic, danger, deception, fun witty moments, heartbreak, healing, and the way it all blends together is seamless.
I'm torn between my favorite characters. Still I can't decide who my very most favorite character even is. It's a toss up between Tavarra and Rhona.
Tavarra, the once was mermaid who finds herself cursed to walk the land as a beast by night, devouring anything in it's path. Her story is amazing, and I especially love the friendship she finds in a wonderfully fun-loving bat.
Rhona, an extremely stong hearted young lady with powers of her own that are mastered and at one point stripped by the villian. She puts those who she loves first, always, and risks her life to defeat anything that may cause them harm. She's amazing, and smart, and completely relatable - powers and all.
The two's fate are intertwined in this magical tale that mixes humanity and fantasy so well! I love this book, and can't wait to read the third in the trilogy!

"Quil picked up the instrument from the top of his pack and played a new melody that made her body want to dance, her soul to fly, and her heart to beat with the rhythm. Rhona wished she could stay here, live beside the river, and dance to his music all day, every day. But that could never happen."

Candace has a way with her writing that completely entrances the reader and Veiled By Desire is no exception! From page one I was mesmerized with the originality of the story and the character development- and I was swept away. Quil and Rhona are my favorite!!! The plot has the reader on the edge of their seat throughout the whole novel and the relationships and the friendships in this story are beautiful. This is a perfect read for any fans of Holly Black and Sarah j Maas. Candace is one of my favorite authors and each novel she writes blows me out of the park. Five well deserved stars!

Although this story is at first glance loosely inspired by The Little Mermaid, the similarities end with a huge, gut-wrenching twist in the first chapter! Veiled by Desire alternates between the beautiful and (rightfully) angry Tavarra, and the strong-willed Rhona, who discovers that she has been lied to by the village headman. Holding her friend’s loved ones’ safety hostage, Rhona is forced to do the headman’s dirty work.

It was so refreshing to read such a female-centered story that not only puts on full display the power of female friendship, but shows that strength is more than just one’s capacity for violence. Even though these women are perfectly capable of kicking ass, their true strength could be seen in their resolve. I for one am tired of the ‘men-with-boobs’ variety of strong female characters, and so it was actually wonderful to read about women who were vulnerable yet determined; women who permitted themselves to love and to care while also holding fast to self-respect.

Tavarra has a dilemma in VEILED BY DESIRE, the second installment in the Laith series. And that dilemma takes her to unsuspected places and a lot of trouble and turns her into a horrendous beast. Do I need to say more? But not all hope is lost, because she teams up with Rhona, who isn’t a beast and is willing to help.

They can help each other. And it won’t easy. But will they prevail? Survive? Will Tavarra in beast form kill Rhona? Anything can happen in VEILED BY DESIRE. The engaging story kept my interest until the very last sentence.

Overall, an excellent story set in a strange world, a girl with a seahorse-like tail, who turns into a unexpected beast, and a more unexpected ending. Highly recommended, the novel that is, not the beast.

I have read some really good books this year, but Veiled By Desire by Candace Robinson is my absolute favorite book of the year!

Laith is a world full of adventure, magic, darkness, beauty, creepy cool trees, clovers, friendship and love. I also love all the characters and really felt for them, especially Tavarra and Eza. I could say so much about them, but don't want to give away spoilers. I finished this yesterday and can't stop thinking about it. I highly recommend!

As always, I am looking forward to the next book!

Another lovely fantasy novel by author Candace Robinson. I so admire her ability to build worlds filled with mystic and such interesting characters. And I especially appreciate how this book subtly links with Clouded by Envy (book 1), which isn't required to read before this one but I HIGHLY recommend it! If you want to be taken away to a magical world with original characters and a roller coaster of emotions, definitely give this one a read.

After reading "Clouded by Envy," I was very excited to get back into the magical world of Laith. And there were a lot of familiar magical items and creatures - the mythology of Luca, jovkins, bats, and the Stone of Desire - but "Veiled by Desire" introduced a whole new depth to Laith, really fleshing out the world in a way that drew me right in.

I LOVED the characters in this book! Rhona and Tavarra, the two POV characters, were so different, and I enjoyed reading about their journeys even before their stories intertwined. The side characters - Eza, Quil, Perin, and Lana, all won special spots in my heart in the end as well. I don't want to give any spoilers, but Perin, in particular, tugged at my heartstrings in every possible way, and I was sooooo invested in him and his happiness. I laughed and cried for him. The relationships between the characters were well developed, natural, and sweet in a way that really won me over.

Told through the two POV's of Rhona and Tevarra, and rich with flashbacks and the slow unmasking of character history, "Veiled by Desire" left me wanting to stay in Laith, and missing these new characters when the book was done. I love how the human monster mythologies are being woven into the plot, and I cannot wait for the next Laith installment!
