Ruth & Gron #5

Krol's Goddess

Rate this book
Krol doesn't trust females. His brother's Queen tried to kill their son, and killed him when Krol escaped with the baby. Then she caught up with him and beat him almost to death, leaving him scarred and maimed. But Krol survived, and has been raising his nephew by himself in hiding for three years. Unlike the rest of his kind, Krol can see Bonding for what it really is, nothing more than a way for selfish, unscrupulous females to enslave the men around them. He is determined that will never happen to him, nor to his nephew, Ryll, who is the only thing keeping him from losing what's left of his mind out in the wilds.

Naomi is a Scout leader, so she's not too worried when she finds herself in a strange jungle. She knows how to survive. What she doesn't know is where she is or how she got there. Nevertheless, she's determined to put a brave face on things, until she discovers Krol and Ryll, who she thinks are Bigfoot! A misunderstanding leads Krol to attack her, but when torrential rain hits the area, they are forced to take shelter together in the same cave. Begrudgingly, they learn to trust each other, until they become each other's only friend in a sometimes beautiful, sometimes deadly world.

Staying together after the weeks of rain, they eventually stumble upon Ruth and Moira, two human women who are living with the 'Bigfoot' and can finally give Naomi the answers she needs about what's happened to her. Ruth and Moira have both settled down with the locals, and Ruth even has a baby with one of them, and Moira is pregnant! With their eyes opened to the possibilities, Naomi and Krol are forced to see each other in a new light, and wonder if maybe they could be more than friends, and finally make a real home in this alien land.

Fun addition to the series. I loved that finally here was a girl abducted by aliens who could make her way in the new world. She was a girl scout leader who was resourceful and able to take care of herself for the most part in this alien landscape. She and Krol were a good match. They were allies in survival long before they entered a relationship. I love the way this author keeps the aliens so alien. I sometimes wonder why they don't develop some sort of sign language but I think it's just that their thought processes are so different that they have no basis to start from.

I loved Krol and Naomi’s story. It was different. Original in it’s own right. I wonder if there will be a story love interest for Mruin. That would be epic.

Naomi has no idea where she is. She woke up in a jungle, where none of the animal or plant life looks familiar, with a pack of supplies and weird anklet. But, as a scout leader she knows how to survive, but the loneliness and the not knowing may drive her insane before the jungle does. Then she bumps into a creature that reminds her of Bigfoot... and Bigfoots adorable son. Krol has been exiled in the jungle with his baby nephew Ryll ever since his brother was murdered by his Queen. The Queen then beat Krol and left him for dead. All because the female wanted to kill his nephew, her son. When Krol sees Ryll playing with the strange Queen, he is filled with terror and mistrust. However, circumstances push them together and they must learn to rely on one another if they all want to survive.

I have been so excited to get my hands on this book. V.C. Lancaster would cruelly torture us with small excerpts posted on Facebook leaving me even more desperate to get my hands on it. I know recently there has been some controversy about "Bigfoot erotica", and I suppose this book would fall conveniently in that category. However, to just dismiss it as "that weird Bigfoot erotica" would be doing this book a disservice. Yes Krol, and all the other males in this series, are tall and slightly hairier than the average man, but that doesn't stop it being a fantastic romance. By the end, you kind of forget that he's a "Bigfoot", instead he's just Krol.

Krol's Goddess takes its time building up the romance, at first Krol and Naomi do not trust one another.  For him, he has a history of being abused by females and she has been dropped into a strange new place and Krol is a scary looking guy. It's only the presence of the adorable Ryll that allows them to connect as they start to bond over his care. The first half of the book is the three of them together, slowly becoming a family unit.

The second half of the book is where, building on the trust they have gained, the romance starts to blossom. When Krol, Ryll and Naomi stumble onto Ruth, Gron and company their dynamics begin to shift.I really enjoyed watching their perspective shift from a co-parent to a potential romantic partner. Much like the other couples, Naomi and Krol couldn't understand one another's language, which somehow made it more romantic. I also loved how Krol's thinking had changed from believing her to be an evil spirit of some kind, to a goddess sent to bless him.

This book is a great slow burn romance, it has a damaged but lovable hero, an adorable toddler and a kickass heroine. I know the appearance of the hero will be too strange for some people. However, if you don't mind something a little out of ordinary I highly recommend giving this series a try.

Slow Burns & Space Toddlers

Let me be honest: after Unbonded, I was nervously eyeing this final installment like it might try to emotionally waterboard me again. Ruth’s Bonded and Gron’s Fated had me fully hooked, but Unbonded? That one felt like being third-wheeled to a toxic couple's therapy session. So when I cracked open Krol’s Goddess, I braced myself.

Reader, I was wrong—in the best way. What I got was a delightfully cozy adventure, served up with emotional depth, just the right pinch of drama, and a four-year-old ape-toddler named Ryll who could charm the scales off a xeno-lizard.

Naomi, Krol, and Ryll make one heck of a trio. The dynamic is warm, a little messy, and totally endearing. Think "found family" but with more mud, rain, and alien survival stakes.

The romance is tagged as “slow burn,” and they really meant slow—but when it ignites, it burns in all the right ways. The pacing works, giving space for real emotional development and the building of a relationship that feels earned.

Overall, Krol’s Goddess is the sci-fi equivalent of a warm cup of cocoa during a thunderstorm—if your cocoa came with interspecies bonding, jungle dangers, and a fuzzy toddler climbing on your head. I adored the fresh perspective, the softened edges of alien survival, and the warmth that wrapped around even the hardest moments.

If you like your alien romances with heart, humor, and a little chaos courtesy of a small, hairy sidekick, this one’s for you.

I'm so in love with this series and I hope it's not the end...

Krol is from the mountain and lives in caves rather than trees. He sole purpose in life is raising his nephew Ryll, like he promised his brother he would do. He's struggling and lonely so when Naomi shows up he's unsure. Is she a spirit? Should he trust her?

Naomi finds herself alone but doesn't remember how she got to this tropical forest. She's bewildered when she comes across Krol, but cute toddler Ryll tugs at her heart strings. The slowly build a bond and they eventually find the valley tribe.

I’m so sad this is the last book in the series (as of now). I enjoyed these books so much, and they weren’t without their faults so I’m pleasantly surprised I liked them as much as I did.

In this book we meet Naomi, the newest human transported to the Gandry’s planet by the little green bastard aliens. Naomi is a Girl Scout leader and nature enthusiast, so that helps her immensely in her new life. Naomi starts off alone, hiking through the woods for weeks looking for life that she recognizes, civilization. She doesn’t remember how she got there. She doesn’t know where she is. But she has her suspicions because she doesn’t recognize any of the plants, animals, or stars that she sees. After hiking for a while, she comes across a little boy Gandry (Ryll). She makes a horrible first impression when she runs from an angry, scared Krol, with Ryll still attached to her.

Krol is a Gandry in a tribe with an abusive af alpha female, Mirr. Mirr mates with the men in her tribe, growing tired of them easily. Any males born are exiled from the tribe as soon as they’re weaned, resulting in their deaths. Surak, Krol’s brother, and only surviving family member, comes to Krol late at night in a panic asking him to take his nephew and run. Surak will dies for planning such a thing, and Krol is left for dead because of it. But Krol doesn’t die, and Mirr never finds Ryll, so Krol lives as an exiled Gandry, raising his nephew, which he has no knowledge how to do. Because of Mirrs abusive behavior, Krol swears off mating, believing that all females are the devil. He believes them all to be dominating, rough, and demanding.

The rains come and after Naomi’s (“Mimi”) horrible first impression, and she ends up taking cover in the same cave as Krol and Ryll. With the rains lasting so long, they learn to trust, and even befriend each other. Krol is convinced Naomi is a spirit capable of magic, and Naomi is just happy to be with intelligent companions. After the rains, they continue moving from place to place until Naomi comes across Ruth and Moira in the woods.

Naomi is thrilled and relieved to see other humans, ready to follow them back to their camp. Ryll is excited to be around more Gandry, but Krol is hesitant and nervous because of his back story and his brother’s Queen being the mother of Ryll.

The Gandry world grew in this book. In the mountains Naomi see’s wildlife, which we haven’t really seen before. We also are introduced to mountain Gandry, who live in caves, unfamiliar with the “valley Gandry” and climbing trees. The thought of “magic” is a new to us in this world, mountain shaman’s fear it’s existence and spread that fear. We also get to create fire for the first time, something I failed to realize hasn’t been done yet. There were a few new things and I enjoyed them. I think this might be my favorite book of the series, I loved Naomi and her willingness to make the best of things. And Ryll was so cute! I can only hope that the author decides to write more additions to Ruth and Gron’s tribe.

Definitely enjoyed catching up with the Gandry again. I loved the slow, tentative build up between Naomi and Krol and the little family they formed with Ryll. Quite believable, with very realistic reactions and outcomes.

Will read more if the series continues.

***3.5***

I really appreciated the slow burn of Naomi and Krol. I’m fine with the fast burn too, but I often wonder if “sexy” would be a person’s first thought when they meet an alien. Maybe not even top 10, ya know?, so I was able to relate to how Naomi took an almost anthropological approach to her interactions with Krol. Krol is strong and broken and loves so fiercely. And his explanation for the who and how of Naomi is just adorable.

Why only 3 ***?

The Gandry are intelligent but are still in the 'gatherer' stage. They have fur, don't wear clothing, have language but don't make tools or understand fire. The most they do is build platforms in trees. The human women aren't making any real effort to learn the Gandry's language or teach them English. The Gandry are just too primitive for my taste and I can 't get past the feeling of the human women taking advantage of the Gandry males. I wouldn't be as bothered by the differences if the Gandry were just a bit higher on the evolutionary ladder.

I mean the entire series is stupid. The Gardy or whatever are either primitive or they are not. The appear in the hunter/gather stage of evolution, but the author gave them concepts such as contagions & idioms....
Cant have both, people! I suppose if you don’t pay close attention to the glaring irregularities, (let’s not even get started on the green aliens- why do they keep kidnapping humans???? We already know they aren’t compatible) then I suppose maybe it’s okay.

Naomi finds herself in a jungle with plants and wildlife that she has never seen before, with nothing familiar in the stars.

Krol, uncle to Ryll, has been fleeing an abusive Queen and her tribe. Having lived on his own while being responsible for a young child for far too long, he is unhappy to meet this new Queen - Naomi/Mimi.

The long buildup of the relationship between Naomi and Krol was never boring and made complete sense due to their individual pasts. Krol is extremely untrusting of anyone besides himself, with good reason. Naomi cannot understand Krol's language, nor he her language. In that situation, it makes more sense for time being needed before they can trust one another.

Ryll is adorable and really helps all three of them become a family unit.

Seeing the rest of the Tribe through these new eyes is fun. I hope we get more books in this series!

Neat!

I enjoyed this one. Well written and interesting storyline. I liked how this story had a new twist on the alien world and culture. Definitely recommend if you liked previous books in the series. Fun ending with the eels haha

Worth the wait!

Krol - scarred, guarded but oh so sweet to toddler Ryll.
Naomi - strong, capable, rocked camping in Gandry world so hard. Loved this book!

The realistic survival

The was all very realistic. There was no jumping the gun on this one. Sharing a cave with a hostile person your not going to immediately feel the need to jump their bones. I savored every word of this book and got sad when I saw the book ending. Big question, what about Mruin? He needs his own story or at least just keep making more stories in this series/universe. Falling in love with the communication blocked takes skill.

Update: Currently reread this series because I just needs a terrific palate cleanser, and this series does that for me every time. ☺️

I Give this Book a 4/5 Star Rating.

HEA(?): Yes, though you can tell that storyline wise it will continue one to whoever’s book is next. ☺️

Relationship Type: MF
Pacing: Mid
Heat: 3-3.5/5
Romance: 4-4.5/5
Drama: 3/5
Suspense: 2.5/5
Dark(?): No

I love this universe so much, It’s a constant go to and Naomi’s book is very enjoyable and fit right in, I wish it continue but like I said above I think plot wise it’ll continue into someone else’s book like the previous ones in the series, I’m very curious if Mruin might get a book.

*Due to the Many Various type of Language Barriers I will put them in One of Three Categories.
Language Barrier(?): Yes! And I Love it! 😍
Language Barrier - Temporary, Semi or Permanent(?): Permanent! 😍
*Permanent is where >both main characters/significant others< speak their own languages but cannot understand each other so they have to rely on using either various basic words, sounds or gestures to get a point across, and there is no mechanical solution or it’s unable to be used.
*Semi Permanent is where one or both teach each other their language and can at some point speak near fluent and may or may not have a mechanical solution at some point, but in the end can go without mechanical help but the option is there.
*Temporary is where there IS a mechanical solution to fix the language barriers between significant others permanently. No future issues.

Man, I really enjoy this series & I hope there’s more. Even a spin off series about the same species would be great, or other species they’re ‘experimenting’ with.

Loved the final scene with the , and Mruin is going to go crazy with thoughts of them being witches. I hope he gets a book, he’s crazy but I enjoy him. Won’t hold out hope so I’m not disappointed though.

I like Krol, but I’m really disappointed that my fellow black girl gets the scarred one who is initially violent towards her. I needed him to make amends for hurting her ankle and scaring her in the beginning. She’s given a rougher story than the other two and it put me off.

This book fucked up my sleep schedule.

I had such a hard time putting this one down. The relationships between Naomi, Krol, and Ryll were complex and endearing and oh-so-sweet. Krol was understandably very slow to trust Naomi, but that only made the tender moments between them even sweeter. And Ryll was such a cutie! It was interesting to see how even though they still didn’t quite trust each other, both Naomi and Krol were very protective of Ryll, and were able to find common ground due to him.

Their relationship was much more slow burn then Ruth and Grons had been but much different from the kind of slowburn that Moira’s had been. The romance between Naomi and Krol starts off as more of a co-parent/friendship, and it isn’t until Naomi meets Ruth's tribe that she realizes a relationship between Krol and her is even possible. From there the romance picks up pretty quickly, but not so fast as to feel unnatural.

In hindsight, it is kind of funny that Krol was afraid of Naomi Bonding him from almost the very beginning while the thought of a relationship hadn’t even crossed her mind.

We learn more about other Gandry tribes in this book, with Krol and Ryll coming from a mountain tribe and Naomi being placed in that area. With her background in scouts, Naomi was able to survive on her own for 2 weeks before the rains came and she was forced to seek shelter in a cave with Krol and Ryll. I liked that she was a heroine that could really take care of herself and stand on her own in this new world. Her determination to provide not only for herself, but her newfound family was endearing and made her a very emotionally strong character.

I like that through all the books everyone finds love and relationships even though they never speak the same language. It would be interesting to see them learn each other's language, but at the same time I’m a sucker for a good language barrier and don’t want it to change!

I really hope this won’t be the last book in this series as I’ve really enjoyed them all immensely.

Oh no! Poor Naomi has been stolen by aliens and deposited in a jungle. Luckily she’s a Brownie and knows how to camp. I think the author might be getting broody. The first book in the series was all bondage and bonking. The previous book had a baby in it and so does this one. This baby’s a cute one with a tail and he doesn’t have a mummy or a daddy. There are also several sex scenes where a black woman gets fucked by a gorilla. How Lancaster can put both these things in one novel and make it work is beyond me. There’s a steep increase in her technical proficiency over the course of the series. The good structure, pacing and handling of theme has always been there, but earlier volumes were occasionally marred by poor formatting and sentence structure. Problems I forgave because Lancaster is such a total pervert. No need to forgive anything here.

Feminist themes. Allegorically, I suppose Krol is a domestic abuse survivor and single mother who has gone to ground. He might be living apart but he doesn’t go full radical feminist. In fact, homosexuality is prominent by it’s absence in these books. Imagine if a similar social situation existed on Earth. Men would simply start helping each other out. I’m not sure this would even be possible amongst the Gandry. Normally in a novel I’m able to place myself in the protagonist’s position regardless of gender, but in these novels I struggle to do so. If I found myself deposited on the Gandry planet I would probably die of my injuries the first time a female mounted me. The Gandry planet is not a safe space for men. By extension the series is not a safe space for men, but is one for women. Reading it has been a transgressive act by me. I’m not sure Lancaster intended me to enjoy it so much on that basis. I feel like I’ve wandered into the ladies’ changing room and found someone orchestrating a group masturbation session.

Looking forward to reading her other books before my kindle unlimited free trial runs out.

I enjoyed the story and both main characters were great!
Naomi was a Scout leader so she knew how to live in a forest. The fact that she was in a weird jungle that didn't look like anything she ever experienced didn't change her can do attitude. She was competent and self-sufficient. She was also a nice and friendly person, so her first reaction when she saw a little Bigfoot child in the forest was to talk to him and make sure he was alright. Then we've met Krol.
Krol had a tough life, his mother was killed when he was a child and then he witnessed his fathers dying, because of the Bond between the mates. He and his brother joined a tribe, but unfortunately a ruthless Queen chose his brother for one of her mates. Poor guy wasn't anything more than a plaything for her, one of her 13 playthings. When he suspected the Queen was planning on getting rid of his little son Ryll, he begged Krol to take the boy and run away. Krol did that and got awfully beaten after she caught up to him, thankfully he managed to hide little Ryll and live through the beating. So when he saw a strange female holding his nephew his first instinct was to charge her and get him back. It wasn't the best first meeting ;)
I liked how long it took them to trust each other. And it was great to see that they were companions and co-parents keeping little Ryll safe for a long time, before they started their romantic relationship. Naomi was great for Krol, the stiff and grumpy man softened a little and his rough edges smoothed out under her affection. Ryll was adorable and it was heartwarming how quickly he took to Naomi.
Poor Mruin lost his marbles, but who could blame him? He saw a lot of weird, inexplainable for him things. I loved how the mixed tribe was happy in the end, but it was a bit sad that Mruin was still afraid of the women.

A new adventure

Naomi was leading a scout trip when she woke up in a jungle. Not the forest she was in, but a jungle- complete with strange new animals and trees unlike anything she'd seen or read about. But the real kicker that she was someplace new was the baby bigfoot she saw. A cute little guy, all fuzzy and with a tail. Then dad came roaring down the mountain at her. Time to go!

Spoilers ahead.
Naomi has a leg up on Ruth and Moira, as a scout leader she's trained for camping and outdoor skills. She's not an office worker or a bartender. She has hiking boots, can make her own fire, and knows how to scout for food and water. And she was doing fine, if very confused, til daddy bigfoot thought she was stealing his kid. That for her some muscle twinges and a sprained ankle from the shaking. But the rains force them into the same cave for several weeks and they start to understand each other. She sees him as a dedicated dad, scarred but always looking after Ryll. He thinks she's either a spirit or a goddess with her magic tricks and fire. He calls her campfire songs spells and, even after witnessing her protect him and Ryll, wary of letting her bond him. To which Naomi doesn't even realize is an option with Krol. This is, compared to the others, a slow burn. Krol is damaged by the queen who killed his brother, the brother who begged him to take Ryll and run. Mirr was getting ready to put him in the woods to die like her other sons. So, yeah, he hates queens. Naomi is just trying to survive and the bigfoots seem to know this world. She's sticking with them. I love that while Naomi is frustrated by not understanding each other she never gives up. Of all in the series this one is my favorite.
