*The History Of India For Children* (Vol. I) By - Archana and Shruti
As the title suggests, it is purely a history book, especially designed for children, but caters to all age groups effectively. It has a broad view of history, starting from - even before everything started, when India was geographically taking shape, when India had Ostriches, Giraffes, and Dinosaurs, needless to mention that humans weren't human then. This volume I, explains about the journey of India, from stone age to Mughal Sultanates, in an easy to understand language, explanation and lucid style. The writing style and presentation is obviously targeted for children, but content is definitely for every age group. Like children books, it contains fun facts and activity suggestions. It has everything we've read in school about history, and now I can expect more from Vol. II, as it will be delivering the modern history of India. It is written by Mrs. Archana Garodia Gupta (once was on expert panel of KBC, and many such quiz things), and Ms. Shruti Garodia (a history buff). They aren't conventional writers, but they presented this lengthy subject beautifully. They wrote almost every aspect of Civilization-periods and dynasties, to name a few - Harrappa, The Vedic Period, The Age of Budhha, Mouryan Dynasty, Mughals and many more. They tried to depict- lifestyle, rituals, trade related activities and social structure, of all periods. If you like history, you must read this book. Even if you're trying history for the first time, this is your pick..!
The blurb identifies Archana as the Champion of an international Television quiz show and Shruti as a “history-geek”. That is, they are not professional historians. Nor do they teach history in this college and that university.
Probably that is their strength. Because the Garodia sisters have done a wonderful job of writing history for the children.
And this is how history should be written for the children.
The Volume-I deals with Indian history from the dawn of civilization to the Delhi Sultanate.
Written in lucid and witty style, this is a broad panoramic view of the nation’s 4500-year history.
The “Fun Fact!” is truly funny, the boxed items shed more light on a particular subject and the Activity Ideas make the book even more interesting.
There has lately been a great deal of controversy about how the mainstream historians have dealt with the Islamic period of our history. Archana and Shruti have rightly and wisely steered clear of that controversy.
In our career-centric curriculum (not that it should be frowned upon), history generally takes a back seat. It gets pushed away by Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Economics, Computer Science and even Environmental Science. Our children get through history more as something to be grudgingly endured that something to be learnt. And the quality and content of our history books – particularly in the vernacular languages – have not helped, either.
But there are a lot – A LOT – of things that should make us proud of our forefathers. Garodia sisters have put that pride right and center in our classrooms. Without screaming to be nationalists!
Thank you, Archana and Shruti, Excellent job. Looking forward to read the Volume-II and also your book on women rulers of the country.
An excellent book written with passion for history. Indian history is presented beautifully with references and also the actual location where you can find them in modern era. The book, mentioned for children is surely a reference book for people of all ages. From the beginning the book traces the happenings in and around india while also giving a commentary on what was going on around the world during that era. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and getting to know a lot about our historical past. The book, part 1 documents history till just before the advent of the Moghuls. The writing with gently sprinkled humour makes reading easy and attractive. It is a must book to be treasured as a reference book.
