A Sweet Clean and Wholesome Western Pioneer Romance that Will Touch your Heart! Follow Alice’s journey west as she faces challenges that will affect her forever. Will she finally find what she is looking for?
The American Civil war has torn Alice Cleary’s family apart, and cast the children amongst what friends and relations would have them. And though Alice appreciates the home she and her younger brother, Will, have had with her aunt and uncle, when they pressure her to marry an older man for their benefit, she flees to the sanctuary of the church. There, sister Agnes helps to set Alice’s feet on a path that will lead her across the country. In Kansas, Will finds a place on their sister Louisa’s farm, but times are hard and as much as she craves the security of her own people, there is no place for Alice. Her journey lies onward, in the wilds of New Mexico.
After navigating risk and peril, Alice comes into her own. She knows her own mind – and her own heart. But when it is broken, will Alice have the strength and courage to remain true to herself?
1 star & 1/10 hearts. This story begins when Alice is pressured to marry an ugly, cruel older man. He’s pretty disgusting. There are some euphemisms too. Also, this book gave off a dangerous message that you should follow your heart/what you think is right, and it doesn’t matter if you break rules. That you need to be accepted as you are & that you can’t be accepted to comply to what the Bible says women ought to be. Finally, there was a long scene set in several bars with lots of prostitutes around, and Alice & her friend are nearly used. There was lots of mentions of that kind of stuff. And there was a ton of kissing & desire before engagement. Definitely not an author I’ll try again.
In spending time over the last few days reading a bit of two books at a time have finally finished the first and am now finished with this one as well.
Alice Cleary is at the center of an interesting story and as it unfolded my appreciation for how people made their way in life during the 1800's grew. Hard yes but in many ways much more fulfilling for those who conquered their fears and tamed the wilderness out west settling in places as beautiful as they were forbidding.
This is a story of courage, faith, family, friendship and love found when it was not looked for.
A historical romance featuring two people from different walks of life whose hearts found each other despite many reservations and obstacles put in the path to their happy ending.
This was a good historical book. It shows how the Pioneer woman persevered and how tough they had to be. This book takes place after the civil war and is about a family of orphans that had to be placed with different relatives. Most of the story is about three of the children after they were grown and how they !migrated West and the lives they made for themselves. There is a lot of hardships that each of the three kids endure and overcome .
A Georgia belle becomes tough young woman that endures hardship to find an unexpected love in New Mexico. Overall a good book. Not overly complicated, yet a unique perspective.
I was intrigued from the very first page. The hardships Alive faced keep me yearning to be right there with her. Which the author made sure you felt that way. This is a must read for sure
A satisfying read with a strong female character with an ability to face and conquer the challenges in her life and fits the author's theme of courage and faith. Primary characters are well developed. Did find myself a bit irritated with regard to the secondary characters. Would have appreciated knowing what happened to them. For example, it would be a bit satisfying to learn what happened to her Aunt and Uncle and that horrible cousin. Likewise, discovering what happened to the younger children (siblings) would have allowed this story to earn a few more stars. What contributed to my liking this story is the author's ability with descriptive language and dialog.
